  • Farm Auction, Fence Cleanup, and Machine Shed Update! Spence and I started getting the north fence on the main farm cleaned up. A couple days later I got the Machine Shed locked in with the builder. Spencer and I went to a local auction in Central Iowa, and I was trying to buy a really nice condition Case IH 496 Disk to use on the Corn on Corn ground, CRP, and any other touch-up spots. I thought I had the disk at $10,000 and then an older gentleman stepped in and really smacked the whip on me with the price. It got a little too high..... I had to let it go.

The most “efficient” way to remove a fence is to get a bushhog into it and watch it pulling a half mine strain of wire in before you can get it shut down.
...it’s the hour and a half you spend with bolt cutters and a torch afterward that isn’t “efficient”. Ask me how I know 🙄

I have a suggestion you should use the enclosed trailer as kinda like a tool trailer for when stuff breaks in the field. You can also put seed bags in there as well as you can probably put a fuel tank in there to re fuel your tractor that’s what we did for the first 2 years of farming we had a rolling toolbox in there that was strapped down. It worked really well.

Farming has it’s ups and downs. I’ll just say that. If you run new/newer equipment you can go into debt and lose money each year, and farming is just a big gambling game. You can get washouts and droughts and prices can go down. It gives you a lot of experience though and is a good thing to look forward to. I always had my grandpa and uncle who taught me stuff so that made my perspective on it. I couldn’t imagine starting from nothing.

Things are looking good guys . Nice clean job on the fence work . I like that fence puller . My days it was a tractor and chains and ropes with a axe and chain saw for cutting trees and roots . Used to use a pair of staple fence post pullers with a hammer to tap down and drive out the staples . Get a old hay wagon and load the junk right on there and you dont have to pick it up twice . Old dump truck would not be a bad investment either to load trash or scrap in .

Even if you build a basic shop and do not plan to heat it now, I think you would benefit from at least putting in the plumbing for a water heated floor in the hard surface area since you said the other half will be gravel. Working on equipment inside of a heated shop is so much easier - and you would not have to run the heat all year round - only in the winter months if you did actually install a boiler system.
-- Also, it would add a lot of value if you eventually decide to move to another farm and sell this one.
I enjoy your videos and wish you a lot of luck.

Those fence posts, not the metal ones, but the wooden ones, if they are black locust(most likely not) they will be good to reuse. I've reused 145 year old black locusts from the remains of the dairy farm I bought. Black locusts fence posts are harder than re-enforced concrete. If you don't want to use them and they are black locust they sell for $5-10 bucks a piece. More money for the budding farm.

Just a tip Grant, when at an auction, your opposing bidder will see when your unsure on if to bid and realise he's got the upper hand as you don't want to bid much higher. So be confident in your bids and bid to a curtain price and don't go higher. If you get it, you get it. If not you don't. Theres plenty stuff around.
