Road looks great Ed! Good idea on the jig. I use joint compound as well. Just fill the cracks, sand, and repeat. After striping, I shave off some pencil lead and rub in with my fingers for some grit and grime down the center of each lane. Cheers, Dan

That's the only drawback when using joint compound for roads, cracking! Joint compound is made to be put on in thin layers, dry, sand, and repeat. An alternative to joint compound is Sculptamold or Fusion Fiber. Both are a paper mache product. They can be plopped down in thick layers. They can be tinted or painted. They do not crack when drying! Fusion Fiber will never dry out. Sculptamold will dry out. If you make to much Fusion Fiber, just place the left over amount in a container and place in the refrigerator until next time. Add a little water and you're ready to spread again. You did do a very good job on that road. Thanks for sharing. Roy

Great job. Setting type drywall mud does not crack like finishishing mud. But you have to mix the setting type with water. on the bag it will say 15, 45, or 90 I believe that the approx time for it to dry.
This has been down for almost a year with tons of work going on around it and it has had everything sitting , sliding, and hitting it for the whole year. Just needs a little touch up paint it's holding up great. Thanks for watching.=Ed
Thanks man, I haven't used smooth it. I used Plaster of Paris on the Inter-Model yard. You have to be ready cause it sets up fast, but I like the results from it a little better.
what i really dont like about layouts, is the fake people . cars parked on the road [parked is ok but not stopped on the road]...... idea for u. on cardboard spray glue and quickly sprinkle fine sand on it. let dry and do it again as needed. pot holes can be made by pressing into card board with thumb /finger etc. then different color sand glued into pothole. black thread laid on road before sand will be crack repair. dont forget to chip and pothole the edges of road too.
Thanks for the suggestions, I think with the figures and vehicles if they are strategically placed to simulate movement they don't seem as out of place. I do agree that the poor guy sitting at the road crossing for an eternity is a bit much. Thanks for watching
