Hey Charliezard! I do not currently have a video focused solely on vocal reverb BUT my two biggest suggestions would be A. use the Master Reverb slider (at the bottom left hand side of the Smart Controls window- cmd+B) and start with it about half way up... then simply pull it back or push it higher based on what your song calls for. B. If you're using a plugin like the Platinum Verb like I show at the end of this video then simply adjust the Wet slider (the very bottom slider on the plugin) and back it down to around 10-20% depending on how wet you need/want the vocal to be in the context of your song. Then past all of that, if you want your chorus vocal to have more reverb then you can create a second track with the same exact settings by hitting Cmd+D (=duplicate) which will create a duplicate track and then you can push the reverb higher on that track and have one be your "verse" track and another be your "chorus" track. Hope that helps charliezard! -Dean
Thanks for the super concise n helpful guide!! All the other tutorials don't cover as much or as clearly as you do. I'm trying to adjust my vocals in a Broadway cover and been struggling adjusting the hard sibilances I make (I also used a dynamic Sennheiser mic to do this as opposed to a condenser). The song has strong vocals, so I tried using the Female Voice Strong preset on the DeEsser plug-in, but it makes the sounds around the sibilances sound off. Do you know how I can fix this?
Hey Sora, as for your question... yeah, sometimes the DeEsser in GB can take a bit more than you want off so I might steer away from it. A lot of the sibilance control happens for me in the recording phase by using a pop filter (and foam windscreen that tames sibilance) and even more so by making sure to give a little pit of space between me and the mic if I'm really going for it (maybe 8-12 inches) and even potentially turning my head slightly to the side if I have some high sibilance syllables. I know that is not necessarily what you're asking but it is hard for me to give a real solid answer on how to tame an already recorded vocals without hearing it and working with it... so if re recording is an option I would look to do that because if your dry recording is solid (sibilance free) then processing will only go that much better for you! Hey Sarah Beth! Great question... That is called "sibilance" (harsh T's, S's, and P's) and the easiest fix for it is to simply back away from your mic a bit, especially if you are using a condenser mic. The closer you get to a condenser microphone the more "present" it can sound but it also ups the your risk of picking up more of the sibilance in your voice. So if you're experiencing a lot of sibilance in your recording then definitely back it up a bit OR if you want to stay closer to the mic then you can simply turn your head a bit when you sing a hard T, S, or P sound. Hope that helps Sarah Beth! -Dean

I probably need to update... thank you so much for your quick response! me and some cousins overseas are planning to write songs by recording individual tracks and mashing them all in the end..so your videos are really helping us out... God bless and more power to you!
Hey June! That's probably because you are recording at a volume level that is too loud. In this video ruclips.net/video/e4C5DxOepsM/видео.html I show you what a healthy recording volume looks like! -Dean
Hey Rabin! Personally, I always manually adjust the EQ as I show in the video but in the beginning when I was still learning EQ and mixing I would use the presets a lot of times until my ears got more skilled and I spent more time practicing doing my own EQ. -Dean
Hey Chris! I typically will either back away a bit from the mic, or turn my head a bit and if it's still too loud then I will turn down the gain (volume) knob on my interface. Hope that helps! -Dean
Hey Gabriel, yeah man, you could definitely use these techniques on rap vocals. In reality, the 3 tools I show in the video are the start to nearly any vocal in most any genre. If I were doing rap vocals I might also look at adding some auto tune (ruclips.net/video/dvgwWNCD_30/видео.html) and also, I would look for places where I could stack vocals for emphasis (recording extra takes of the same vocal for more impact in certain areas of the song). Hope that helps, Gabriel! -Dean
The Songwriting Studio Hi, yeah I am familiar with stacking vocals as I have been to a couple studios before. Just doing a home one. I will also check out the link. Lastly, do you recommend using the noise reduction plugin before mixing and lowering the DB to reduce any clipping in each of the recordings? Also, do I apply those mixing things to even the adlibs? (basically every recording?). Thanks.
@@IOG2K Very cool. I actually don't use the noise reduction plugin but rather I try and make sure that every recording I do is not clipping (maxing out the volume meter and therefore causing the vocal to distort). I aim to record a signal that is healthy and strong but not too loud (so my waves end up about 50-70% of the space in the blue region when you record). And as far as ad-libs, yes, I would apply most if not all of the same techniques to them but with ad-libs I typically make the processing even more dramatic (more reverb, more panning, a more dramatic) low pass or high pass filter, especially if it's singing ad libs, if it's talking ad libs I may not ad way more reverb but I would still do some of the other things to make it sound different in the mix but not stand out as much as the lead vocal. Hope that helps Gabriel! -Dean
The Songwriting Studio Thanks a lot. As far as the panning goes, I don't want to mess up the recordings by adding that as it could sound weird on speakers and i'm kind of new to these things. Also, do you know any cheap speakers/monitors that will fit in the scarlet focusrite audio interface?
@@IOG2K You're welcome. Yeah, I always like to recommend the PreSonus Eris E5's (the speakers I use, and have used with a Scarlett solo). They're about $300 for the pair. There is also KRK Rocket 5" speakers that are great too. It's hard to find new, quality speaks for less than about $300 for the pair but if budget is the issue then you might look for these speakers on eBay or somewhere used. -Dean
to me, everything sounds ugly when i use the EQ with that narrow q and that high boost. i prefer to use wider Q sweep, and getting narrower each time i locate some resonance frequencies. and why r u shouting? i can hear you clearly even if you whisper asmr style cuz you have a mic (just in case if you forget about that.) lol. nice video dude
Hey Shahiru, that is because I did some tuning on them and them exported them as an AIF file and then reimported them, making them orange (anything you import is typically orange). -Dean

Hey Keon, I used a a $99 Focusrite Scarlette Solo for the interface and an old model Blue Bird condenser mic. The old model like mine has been discontinued and runs about $150-$190 used on Guitar Center or Ebay and the new models will run about $300 brand new. Hope that helps Keon! -Dean

Hey @@federicoinfantino1762 , I am not exactly sure what program/sounds he uses but some sounds in GarageBand that are in that ball park would be "Square Bells" found in und "Synthesizer" then "Classics", also there are several basses in that stream like "Colossal Synth Bass" "Eighties Pop Bass" "Deep Sub Bass" all found in "Synthesizers" under "Bass"... or you can simply search for them by name at the top of the sounds library where it says "Search Sounds"... hope that helps! -Dean

@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Thanks Dean. I am beginner n need presets at moment
thankyou (:
You're welcome, Sam! -Dean
how do you get your vocals where you belt to sound good without all the fuzz and static in them???
Hey Chris! I typically will either back away a bit from the mic, or turn my head a bit and if it's still too loud then I will turn down the gain (volume) knob on my interface. Hope that helps! -Dean
Steve Carell giving a Garage Band lesson... What's not to like? Consider me subbed. 🎯👏👏😂😂😂
Hey, is this alright for rap vocals?
How come your audio tracks are orange though
Hey Shahiru, that is because I did some tuning on them and them exported them as an AIF file and then reimported them, making them orange (anything you import is typically orange). -Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 oh how do you tune them?
@@shahiruperera1103 Here's the easiest way to do it!... ruclips.net/video/dvgwWNCD_30/видео.html. Another way (that takes more time, skill, and money) is... ruclips.net/video/LoQAaP9r2A0/видео.html... I would recommend starting with GarageBand's version of Auto Tune! -Dean
What was the interface & mic used for this song?
Hey Keon, I used a a $99 Focusrite Scarlette Solo for the interface and an old model Blue Bird condenser mic. The old model like mine has been discontinued and runs about $150-$190 used on Guitar Center or Ebay and the new models will run about $300 brand new. Hope that helps Keon! -Dean
What Mac did u use?
Hey lil bankroll, the Mac I used for this project was just normal 21.5" mid 2014 iMac, nothing fancy, just the stock model with GarageBand. Hope that helps! -Dean
Where can I find THIS SONG?!
Hey Mike, it was on iTunes, Spotify etc... if it's not there anymore then you can see the full song+lyric video at DeanDavisMusic.com
Anyone knows the name of the song he uses?
Hey Fernando! The song is called "Psalm Of Deliverance" by Dean Davis (me) and you can find it on Spotify, iTunes, or here at my artist page www.deandavismusic.com! -Dean
@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Thanks man! Sounds amazing and your tips really helped me improve my own mixes. You're awesome!
@@psfparada so glad to hear man! Thanks for the encouragement Fernando! -Dean
But where are all the sounds of the song? Garageband includes the sounds?
Hey Federico, yes indeed, the sounds you hear in this song come stock in GarageBand. They are the stock piano with added reverb/ambience, then several sounds in the Synthesizers menu (a few pads) and then some of the stock drums with added reverb. Let me know if you have a specific question about an instrument Federico, be glad to help. -Dean
I am looking for sound like.. mm how can I explain? What is the name of sounds used for example in “Wow” of post malone, you can Hear on the background during the song but mostly in minute 2:05 ..
During the song in the background this powerful low sounds, are there in garagebands, if you have understand me?
The Songwriting Studio help me please!
-Dean
