I've had my Fuji hvlp for 8 years and I still love it, the whip hose is great! Keep it clean after each use and it will last... worth every dollar! Great review 👍
Thank you John. This was one of the most honest tool reviews I've ever seen!! I am in the same situation and need to find the right spray equipment. You literally answered every question I had. The spray equipment manufactures do a bad job at that! I am buying this unit.
I have had a graco 9.0 hvlp and the titan 115 hvlp and now I just bought the Q4 platinum and in my opinion it’s a game changer with it being high quality and easier on the ears 👂 I give this hvlp 5 stars ⭐️
That's a big deal. The Graco 9 / 9.5 and Titan 115 are direct competitors with the Fuji Q4 and Q5 Platinum. The Titan reportedly does up to 11.5 PSI, so reportedly less thinning, although I've read several reviews in which the users said they've had issues with the whip hoses cracking easily (the older grey ones, not so muh the newer black ones), and cups leaking quite a bit. The Graco has filter warning indicator and reportedly wider range of accessories. Interesting to see your take....
Thank you. I actually went Apollo... Since its not only american but right across the street from me but the video was very informative to all HVLP systems.
I have a mini mite 5. Can i make a suggestion go to home Depot and get a remote plug you can turn it on and off without walking back and forth to the machine. They only cost about 10 dollars.
So so glad you used the word "intimidating" and that you expressed my exact concerns -- how to put it together to use, and how will I get it sufficiently clean again! It's my first sprayer and it looks like I bought the top of the line. I haven't been able to approach understanding it, until finding your video. Simple, straightforward, and what I needed to know, unlike many other videos which focus on spraying styles or just what's in the box, with no explanation of the in-between! Thanks!
Is there a time limit the machine can be left on before the heat damages the unit? I can combat the heat that makes it to the air cap, but I'm worried about the heat that can damage the turbine? Here's one tip I learned. Pick up a cheap 15 dollar remote on/off switch from Amazon you can set it by you and it will cut the power off to the unit when you are not spraying. Then you can set the unit outside the room and at the press of a button turn it off or on.
Bottom: Suction Fed and Top: Gravity Fed. Suction fed is very old technology, it works, but gravity fed spray guns both conventional and HVLP are what today's auto-refinish / collision paint technicians use to paint your cars.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, John. Just a simple comment: at 13:03, you incorrectly identified the fluid control knob as an air control knob. The air volume is controlled by the ball valve which users normally screw onto the end of the quick disconnect. That location allows the opertor to quickly adjust the air volume when required - such as when you're wanting to reduce the amount of bounce back when spraying confined areas, such as the inside of cabinets. Again, thanks for sharing with us, John. By doing so, we all win!
Very informative! Thanks for taking the time to break this unit down and share the pros and cons. Im in the market for HVLP system and know nothing about this type of sprayer. They range in price from low to high so that was very intimidating. Thanks again and I will be keeping my eye on this unit.
We have owned 6 of these. Yeah very quiet for the 1st couple weeks then it WILL get loud as hell and VERY ear piercing. The older units never did this but these new units with the new heat vents do. The reason for the new vents is because the older q4 used to overheat all the time.
Hi, Steve, if you're experiencing degradation in the sound-deadening feature of your Q-series units, give Fuji Spray a call (1-800-650-0930) as this is something they'd want to discuss with you. I owned one of the first generation Q-series turbines (a Q-4 Pro, I believe it was called) and never had a problem with it, and I now own a Q5 Platinum turbine, which has also given me excellent service.
Just a note, I have noticed many Americans say "Turban tur-ban" instead of "Turbine tur-bine" and I find it kind of odd. A turban is a hat. A turbine is completely different. First noticed Jay Leno saying it for his turbine bike.
Thank you Sir. I have a cheap Rockler unit that I have been very happy with however; I've been thinking about stepping up my game. Fuji is at the top of my list. I'm just taking in all the info I can as you say this is an investment. Appreciate the video.
• @0:40 Tool review. @1:27 What is HVLP? Keep eyeballing the dilution, I don't care much for the viscosity cup and have gotten pretty good about just estimating how much water to use. Looking to upgrade my sprayer this year as I like my Wagner, but would like something a little more along these lines. Good review, thanks!
Great review, thank you so much, im in the market for a home compressor for automotive work and was not sure if i wanted a standard compressor or a 5 stage turbine, I have a much better understanding of how the turbine compressors work thanks to you.
I sprayed some cabinets with Benjamin Moore Advance and Inslx Stix primer with this and I really like it. I have a minimite 3 so a smaller model then what he has
Yes... I used the cup and the tip that came with the gun and thinned it until I got the right number of seconds. Thinned with distilled water as that is a water based paint. Best way to do it is to weigh the paint/water to make it repeatable
I'm sorry. For that kind of money, I would find a used Kremlin. Which most all professional cabinet shops use and I use in my finish department. Kremlin's can run off of pancake compressor. For the hobbyist or diy person I would buy the Wagner Flexio 890 which comes with two guns. But good review of the Q4.
@@user-sx4yu3nw4j The Fugi is next to junk as well. The Wagner comes with two guns...One is for larger applications and the other is for smaller detail. However, for the DIY person, if cleaned and cared for properly, both the Wagner and FUJI would last a very long time. For the DIY money, I would buy a really good compressor and a couple high quality cup guns. I would have money left over and a quality compressor I could use for everything.
Thanks for sharing. Apart from being very quiet, which is nice, this is a standard HVLP system. As with all spray systems, the devil is in the cleaning of the system and for the DIYer, it's better to buy a spray can for the final coat.
With those prices I am loving my airless sprayer even more. Buy one if you are loving to spray watery liquid paints. By the way these hvlp turbine companies are giving 1 gun for free when you buy the most expensive models. Ja. Ja... ja 😃 ????
Thanks for the detailed overview. I ordered the titan capspray but it looks to be the equivalent of your fuji. Do you spray both oil and water base from the same gun?
2/3rd's is just 66% and these have a much higher transfer efficiency. 85-90% if set up right for the material you are using. Also having the right system. A 2 stage shouldnt even be made lol.
I had a feeling that the bottom feed gun would not loose suction as much as the top feed gun. I will most likely get a top feed gun at some point to see the difference. They have a gun called the 9600-G-XPC that is a gravity top feed gun where the cup can swivel so that you can kind of control the angle at which the cup sits at. That way you can get into tighter spaces along with making sure you don't start sucking air. I think that is the direction I will go next.
The design of the intake filter seems kinda dumb. Both the motor cooling fan and the compressor fan are competing against each other to suck air through the tiny air filter. Obviously the, 4 stage fan is gonna win and choke off airflow to the motor.

Harbor freight makes one sprayer that works really well and costs fractions compared to expensive ones and the overall finish is fantastic...I've used alot of top name branss and they can't compete with such a cheap product
Harbor Freight? I didn't even know they made a real HVLP a turbine HVLP big difference man. I think you're just talking about a regular HVLP ran by compressed air gun correct?
Tundra Whisperer you definitely need to take the gun all the way apart to clean it. Meaning you need to remove the spray nozzle, tip, needle, etc. Fuji does have a Teflon coated cup for the bottom feed gun and that has been awesome. Super easy to clean. As for the unit filters- I spray with my Q4 quite a bit and have never cleaned the filter once. That’s because I keep the turbine unit as far away from the work piece as possible- typically outside of a garage while I’m inside.
Very nice review. Thanks for posting. I just bought the semi pro 2 and was testing it with just water today to get a feel for it. I do have a question though: I was concerned that just running water will cause rust if you don't use mineral spirits afterwards. Is that the case or can I just run water through it and let it air-dry without concerns of it rusting? Thanks!
bklyn2va2dc unless you dedicating the gun to oil base materials, I’d run alcohol through it after water washing rather than mineral spirits. I’d be concerned that the mineral spirits would leave a residue behind whereas the alcohol will flash off cleanly.
Franklin Quijote you could, but it is not intended for that. I have this same model- the Q4- and it doesn’t like latex type paints unless they’re thinned, and you definitely need a larger spray tip. 1.8 minimum. 2.0 is better. I also have a Graco airless and that is definitely the way to go for doing large areas like walls or ceilings. The Fuji would work, but it only holds a little paint before needing to be reloaded. I came to this video to see what his experience was with the sprayer I have. I’m thinking about upgrading my HVLP sprayer to be able to do a better job on cabinets. I don’t like how much I have to thin with my Q4.
i have seen it done before. some prefer turbine as they are lighter and portable, vs larger compressors at that price range and it looked good after it was done. all about the gun atomization and how you spray and prep the surface rather then the turbine vs compressor.
Do not use this for latex, this is more ideal for smaller projects with oil finishes or lacquer paints. A cheap airless will work better for latex with a fine finish tip. If you have larger projects everyday buy an air assisted airless for oil based, and a good airless for latex projects.
This unit did not dry the paint before it hit the surface. I ran it for long periods of time from start to finish too. The box would be hot, but the gun put on a great finish. The unit takes air from outside of the box and sends that to the gun. The air for the gun is not taken from inside of the box. With Air Compressors, the compressor unit will heat up and send hot air to the tank which causes the issue.
With the full hose, and a whip hose it's quite a long length for air to travel. By the time it comes out of the gun it's just as cool as your typical compressed air line, only completely dry and with no contaminants/oils.
Hi I've been also useing a 4 stage but was wondering should I get a 5 stage to use Pu paints . Was going to get an airless paint assist but if a 5 stage would do the trick is be delighted what do u think
I couldn't say. It might be a good question for Fuji's tech department. If I remember correctly, the 5 stage is only slightly more powerful than the 4 stage.
I've been using Graco for years and I haven't had any problems, Fuji is crap, I bought one a few months ago and everything is falling apart, first the filters, they break so fast, I just replaced the switch, the paint leaking everywhere and traveling through the air passage where it's not supposed to, Graco is way more superior.
Very nice video, but How someone can justify that machine cost $1.300 dollars ? Now imagine similar ones even much more expensive models like the Graco's or Apollo's up to $3.000 dollars ?? Ridiculous ( not "mini"mite prices and they produce much more noise & heat in your wallet )

Thank you for posting, came to see an example like yours, I use those 2 products a lot.
Which one doesn't make all the noise. I was checking out the Q5 Fuji
It’s not a bad unit but I would go back to Apollo any day. But the Fuji will get the job done nicely
So thorough - loved it
Which gun is better for cabinets. We use gravity feed at work? I want a professional look.
Need to see some more sprating
When you are spraying it look like it was the first time you did it
Thanks for an excellent video! Very helpful.

I have the semipro 2.... I had a lot of thinning I'm thinking about upgrading. So i don't have to thin
Think this would work well for gelcoat application?
Therealphantomzero nope
Awesome review on the Q4! Thanks!
~ Your not ( tools in Action ) what did you do with the Guys ?
another great impartial Fuji review
Great concept but I need to use with a generator or a battery source to power it on the go anywhere. please what is the rated wattage it pulls?
Great review John thanks for the info👍👍👍
Do you have to thin SatinThane? Which I think is like Polyurethane, I believe. Thx

how much does this heat the air going to the gun?

Oh crap. I must have missed that. Unfortunately, I can't go back and fix it.
