And no homeless camps.
@@yeah_yeahwhateverthere’s not a lot of homeless camps that I saw on the beach
So the director is on record saying that the filming at Venice Beach somewhat put Margot Robbie at unease. Not because of being leered at, mind you, but because everyone *ONLY* wanted to talk to Ryan. Dudes would walk up to Ryan, fist bump him, and continue on their way. Almost no one paid attention to Margot.

I have mixed feelings about the movie. I love barbieland and i think the first act was the highlight of the film, but the trailers relied on it so much I felt like I had already experienced the bulk of it. The movie also introduces new characters and elements at such a fast pace i feel like it forgets about its lead character near the end of its second act. We only really get one scene where barbie truly begins to contemplate what life is outside of barbieland, so the end of her arc, while apropriate and expected, doesn't necessarily feel earned. And the film does get preachy, which isnt inherently a bad thing, as long as the audience doesnt feel preached to, which is a bit hard when the characters seem to constantly use buzzwords to vocalize their situation. Enjoyed the film but not as much as I expected to.
I 10000% agree with this comment
Literally the first act is superior but the trailers basically revealed every scene of the first like 30 minutes
Exactly my thoughts, I just didn’t feel like her ending was earned
you summarized exactly how I felt lol. It's a solid 6/10 movie for me. Am yet to watch Oppenheimer but am excited for that as well. I do really wish the trailers didn't spoil as much as they did though.
Thank God an objective comment not immediately fawning Over this. Ultimately it's more message than movie which detracts from the overall humor which going into the movie, I thought was the purpose of it
I personally loved the film. I thought the patriarchy bits were a bit on-the-nose at times but nonetheless very interesting. Like how Ken thought he would be able to land any job just because he is a man and so is supposed to be privileged, or how Barbie is sexualised as a woman in the real world. I thought it poked fun at both patriarchy and matriarchy, as the objectifying and disregarding of Kens can be said to mirror both the treatment of women in our own society (there was a great monologue about the paradoxical expectations placed on women), but also the treatment of men as it isn't okay to take away men's humanity either, and doing so often causes them to push back harder because they feel attacked, creating a cycle of us misunderstanding and fighting eachother. In the beginning the Kens are essentially disregarded which makes them turn to the patriarchy of the real world for a sense of power, but even the matriarchy of the first act is synthetic and soulless where women are all expected to be doctors, physicists etc. which is better than telling them they can't be those things, but by the end they get at how you shouldn't need to be those things to have value as a human; you're allowed to just be 'ordinary Barbie'. I think the film has done an excellent job at showing that you can be a 'stereotypical' feminine woman and that does not make you frivolous or unintelligent, but also that you don't need to (literally) put yourself in a box like people do with different 'aesthetics' nowadays: you can have multiple titles and roles, or you can reject them.
I also liked how Ken was uncouraged to find who he is too by the end, because even if women wanted to solve men's problems, it's not something they can do, men have to be the change they want to see. You know, for a movie about dolls, I thought it was a beautiful commentary on what it means to be human and I damn near cried. This film was ART.
My only gripe with the film is that a lot of of the jokes were in the trailers so they weren't as funny upon hearing them the second time around, but that's fine I still thoroughly enjoyed it in all of its stylised, pink glory. Watched Oppenheimer, then Barbie and I adore both.
I think the anti patriarchy message had to be that on the nose bc as you can see, theres a lot of people that still dont get the message. Look what happened with movies that criticize toxic masculinity like fight club and american psycho.. a lot of men think this movie is a misandrist movie, but it isnt whatsoever. So tbh, i think we’ve come to a point where its like “OK you guys STILL dont get it, ig we have to be as CLEAR as possible that the patriarchy SUCKS for everyone, (while more for women, it also does for men but ykyk)?” And it STILL hasnt worked 🥲
@@lb8489 I agree, and I also think the matriarchy bits can be misconstrued as a 'screw men' kind of thing, when actually its criticising hating on men to uplift women as much as it is hating on women to uplift men. I feel like some people on either side just entirely missed the point. I'm a man that saw it with my brothers and we certainly never found it to be 'man-hating'.
@@lb8489 I think the message delivery just did not hit because the Kens were nothing but idiots the WHOLE movie. There was not a single moment of genuine genius among the whole movie. Anything "smart" they did was counteracted with some dude bro haha quickly after. Also the ending speech was lowk meh. Maybe if it was after an emotional rant by BlondKen about how they feel useless, unworthy, stupid, and overall didn't feel good before but they found *something* in the new system they had so they stuck with it. Maybe a Ken or two could've been honest about how they don't want to be forced to act a certain way, and say they'd rather do x or y without it being a joke. Make the Kens a character, not a caricature. If the Kens being "themselves" were idiots, then the "Be ken" message doesn't really ring an emotional chord. On a scale of: Bottom Mid, Below Mid, True Mid, Above Mid, and Peak Mid, I would put Barbie in between a High Below Mid or a Low True Mid.
It’s like you took my thoughts and put them into words, and for that, thank you
This whole movie just had "RUclips Poop Kenergy" written all over it, from Lizzo speaking to Barbie when she falls in the beginning, to the purposely bad visual effects, to the Hanna-Barbera running sound effect the executives (and Adam Groff) made when they were scrambling, to the Kens' fascination with horses, to the grand, mind-fuck ending montage.
And I LOVED IT.

@@sam4gaming135 I believe it's deliberate. Will Ferrell as CEO this time is an allusion to Will Ferrell as CEO the last time.
That's the point, every man in the movie is pointless. It's intentional, there is something called the lampost test where every woman is replaced by a lampost and you see whether or not the movie's plot changes. Well here the lampost test passes for men which is almost unheard of in cinema.
i was waiting to hear your review on this as a casual watcher. as a black woman, i loved the first act, the production 100%, the comedy, acting (margot and ryan stood out to me the most) and gloria's monologue because i've felt like i've related to what she was saying at points and i was glad both the barbies and the kens equally found their own path, but i can't help but feel the execution of some of its message was lost on me, particularly towards the end. idk if it was trying to encapsulate into barbie, a figure that for some people, represented perfection, that it was okay for women to simply be normal, or that barbie, as a concept was as out of touch with reality and needed to connect with women more. i thought they would show more than tell with its feminist message, but maybe the direct messaging of the patriarchy was intentional with both its ironic/social-commentary comedy or its just me from seeing it today for the first time. either way, i liked it but it didn't live up to most of my expections as to what it would deliver; it kind of reminds me of what i thought "don't worry darling" would be versus what it was, except barbie is 100% better than that movie, but i just expected more.
edit: from reading more analyses of the movie, it makes a bit more sense to me now. it was an overall fun movie, and i'm glad i could have time to laugh and think, but i think somethings just fell a bit flat like i said above (execution of its message etc.) went from 7/10 to 8.5/10

I completely geeked out seeing some of those designs used in the movie .
i went from so excited and amazed by the set design and framing, to laughing my ass off, to crying, right back to laughing again. i'm in love with this movie, it was a rollercoaster.
Hell yeah brother
I was pretty disappointed with how surface level the whole movie was.
With it opening with the space odyssey intro, I was hoping for a more darker cosmic horror thing I guess. I was especially disappointed how convenient and boring it was for the characters to get to the real world.
I was jsut very disappointed with the absolute barebones story and very surface level and message.
Are you gay
"I am Kenough" is a phrase that has been etched into my brain forever.
I enjoyed it a lot…could’ve been 10-15 minutes shorter but I liked it.
The cosplay + all pink was fun…I felt underdressed😅😂I wore the same all black fit that the Kens wore during “I’m Just Ken” at least
Saaame i have put on pink pj pants and a heart top with my black leather jacket ~ and dirty white shoes. It was weirdly dressed bu ti love it
I loved the messages this movie had to offer. You should never feel pressured to be what someone else wants you to be. You need to be yourself and find your purpose yourself
You mean the message that almost every pg13 movie has? Really ground breaking stuff here
I don’t know it was like you can’t say that we are wrong because your sexist
@@CaptainFracturebro crying over a kids movie
The message was 'All men are bad' 'bash men' 'treat men like second class citizens' 'men are all fools'. The movie is hateful poison and no kid should be allowed anywhere near it.
@@fairygodmother139 a kids movie where the intended audiences are adults and young adults?
U mentioning the Lego movie remind me of a gag, ' If I had a nickel for everytime Will Farrell played an evil business man in a licensed toy movie, I'd have two nickels. It's not a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice'
It was kinda of sad. Like this story of someone whos life got turned upside down when reality was not the desirable yet, has opened their eyes to overcome their sheltered existence to live. There was a lot of crying. A lot of pro female power. A lot of what life and death mean. I feel bad for America's character bc she didnt really have much of a story besides the mother daughter dynamic that "magically" healed during the montages. They didnt deal with why the daughter was growing distant. They made it seem she was a single mother at first only to introduce the father in a comical cultural poke randomly.
Maybe the true Barbie was the friends we made along the way.
lol it's from wonka trailer 😂😂😂
Thank you for saying Ken was Gosling’s Kendall Roy, truly the best sentence of all time
I went to see it with my sister and both of us absolutely lost it multiple times. Seeing a really good comedy in a theater is such a fun experience.
I think the issue here is that the movie is going to be watched by all manners of people when the target audience itself is actually very niche in the sense that the messaging and core “feel” of the film will only really be understood by anyone whose ever played with a Barbie doll when they were a kid.
As someone who did, I actually really enjoyed the movie and the ultimate message it was conveying about Barbie truly being able to do anything. Plus, I think the whole matriarchy vs patriarchy thing was super smart when you consider that most young girls would imagine their dolls in matriarchies anyway. 😅
Imma have to disagree on the last one. The movie was very biased in its matriarchy vs patriarchy lesson. It showed one as evil while the other as good when they both have there demons to them. I think the barbies and Ken's should've made a new system. Like what was the point if nothing would change on that front.
@@coffiebreak2236 that was my one complaint. i think the movie wouldve been way more impactful when addressing gender equality if the barbies acknowledged that the system they had before ken took over was flawed in itself too and they restructured society after, but i get it, its a movie for young women
@@coffiebreak2236 I thought that too initially when mayor Barbie said the Kens would still be secondary in Barbie land because the real world is a patriarchy but honestly, I don’t really mind? Clearly it was supposed to be humorous after the Kens realised that their entire existences don’t have to hinge on Barbie. I think the bigger takeaway was that patriarchy negatively affects both men and women and in that sense, this movie shows that well. The matriarchy itself was less about the message and more about replicating what a little girl would envisage her Barbie dolls in.
“Should’ve made a new system”.
Isn’t that what they did? Mayor Barbie literally tells the CEO of Mattel that they don’t want to go back to the old system and both Stereotypical Barbie and the Kens pursue their own independent paths.
my husband is actually stoked to see it with me. My tomboy daughter who never played w Barbie’s said it was one of the top most entertaining movies she’s seen and it made her happy cry.
And as long as the current reality is still overwhelmingly run by men then I’m totes ok with an imaginary world where the opposite is true, if only to help men imagine themselves in the position women have been in for centuries 😅. They do essentially create a new system acknowledging that the old one was flawed.
Honestly the movie was great all through, my only complain is just how shortly they dove into ken’s issues and how in a way it reflects male problems, i loved the idea of reversing the roles for Barbie land, but the way they downplayed what ken felt (I’m more talking about Barbie being a terrible person towards him) it’s a bit annoying, but other than that, I loved the movie!
The Ken's got absolutely shafted in this movie
@@TheShapeshifter true, more rights for kens! I enjoyed that they at least reached a compromise at the end regarding ken rights
Because she’s the star but Ken, get over it. Men aren’t the centre of the world
@@fairygodmother139 thats not my problem, you've missed the point, i love that they touched on all the real problems women face, and even went as far as to touch a little bit of the problems men also face, but the ending felt like it didn't finish it well, or it was finished on a rush, so it was over simplified. One point does not invalidate the other.
@@fairygodmother139lol you’ve literally replied to every comment I’ve seen about men. Which man hurt you 💀
I can’t talk about the movie anywhere since I’m a 15 year old boy who has friends that don’t get any of the jokes and don’t understand the movie too well.
i always get excited to see what color bordering you use in your videos. i like the purple.
white bordering has still gotta be my favorite though
"A child whose excited to tell you all the things she has to say, and all of them are funny and interesting"
That is absolutely thee most perfect way to describe this movie
not that I thought you would, but I'm glad you didn't seem to critique the feminism message as pandering or man-hating. This movie was so freeing to me as it adressed a lot of feminism issues in a comedic way. It was really a relief that it didn't portray fight equality as "I'm an angry women cause f men!", and I felt sad when some early reviews from a couple of men interpreted it like that
That has been the trend . I don’t like hearing patriarchy and opresion every 15 minutes not gonna lie
I'm a woman & it still felt man-hating to me.
when they got to the real world, ALL the men were immediately terrible , & then all the kens turned bad when they got a taste of the real world. I don't see how it's not man-hating tbh but I'm open to learning
soz that all these losers replied to ur comment
@@indiesunflowersI mean, the movie ends on the notion that the Kens were justified in wanting something different, they just ended up going too far and flipping everything instead of enacting real change
@@indiesunflowers I feel the same here. I don't like having to make one gender a 'villain' just to make the other gender look good. Why can't there be a mix of villains? Or why even have a villain? I saw Nostalgia Critic talk about the movie, and he suggested just focusing on Barbie, the mom, and the daughter. That would have been nice. I want to watch movies that are feminist without being reminded that people think men are just terrible and are always jerks. It rubs a lot of people the wrong way, and the fact that women are complaining about the issue should say something.
I love Greta Gerwig, especially her version of little women. For barbie though I’ve never been in a cinema so full of people laughing, crying and just having a good time 💗
This was the longest commercial for Barbie I ever sat through
i’m seeing it in a few hours, so excited 💓
People fail to understand that being the antagonist and being the villain is different. The antagonist challenges the protagonists beliefs. Ken is the antagonist, doesn’t mean he's the villain though.
He definitely is a villain, but so are the Barbies.
Margo killed it and I’m so glad she produced it too. America Ferrera and Michael Sera were my favorite side characters. Overall such a fun time!
I’ve been saying this since his performance in The Nice Guys but Ryan Gosling is one of the greatest comedic actors of our generation and Ken really is the role he was born to play because it combines his dream boy dramatic background with his comedic genius. He absolutely deserves AT LEAST a best actor nom.
Unfortunately for me i really wanted to like this movie more than i did the first hour or so i was having so much fun i loved the way barbie land look with everything looking like plastic even the way objects and people fall over looked like a kid gliding through the air by hand however towards the third act of this movie where i started thinking "this movie is going to create some interesting conversations" for a movie that seemed like it was marketing for everyone i cant help but to feel like its going to divide its audiance instead of bringing them together
I thought the movie handled the social commentary in the best way possible by using comedy. I assume you saw the movie but there are spoilers in this comment. To me, there wasn't a bad guy. There were just some severely misguided characters like Ken. Ken thought the only way he can be of any value is if Barbie loves him. When Barbie rejected him, he thought that if he implemented patriarchy, he would finally be seen, and respected. In the end, Barbie helped Ken realize that he is valuable not because of his girlfriend or status, but because he is Ken. Ken had an amazing arc in this movie. Stereotypical Barbie's arc is a little more complicated because she ends up in an existential crisis when initially all she wanted to do was fix her body.
It does poke fun at allll the viewpoints as a commentary about the doll’s cultural significance. The only people I’ve seen getting upset about it all have one thing in common. They can dish it out, but they can’t handle anyone questioning their beliefs or pointing out problems with it.
I wish they would’ve done Ken’s fashion show like in the toy story movie
Just saw it. I thought the ending was really disappointing. They should have suggested that the kens and Barbies work together as equals moving forward but instead, they decided to be petty and keep them relegated as second class citizens like in the “real world”. Annoying as hell.
I was also disappointed by that!
dude i thought the exact same thing! when we switched to their constitution after the ken showdown i was really hoping they were gonna bust in and demand a place in their little parliament and live in harmony lol; but i suppose its supposed to be some sort of reversed metaphor for how women have been treated that way in political settings
I thought it was perfect. At the very least to help men see themselves in the position that women have been in for centuries. As long as the real world exists as it is, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with an imaginary world like the Barbie one.
Didn't Prez Barbie literally say things shouldn't go back to the way things were, and for the first time, the Kens were allowed to have a seat in politics? The only they were told they couldn't do was immediately become a supreme court justice, which imo seems more than fair. I got the impression that they could have the same positions as Barbies, they've just gotta work hard for it.
That would be ideal, but as a guy, i enjoyed it and thinking what it would be like if roles were literally reversed and there was a men's suffrage movement, etc. Just an interesting thought experiment
I think it’s a great and smart film that’s messy at parts, 4 stars
Went to the movies expecting Oppenheimer to be the much better film but I was mistaken. I liked Barbie slightly more and they were both great lol
Agreed,I went into the film completely blinded without knowing about any of the controversy surrounding the film. I actually liked it ! Like he said in the video it's a beautiful film. I enjoyed the colorfulness, the props, and the cinematography that the movie offers. What I got out the film. It felt like watching a music video at time. Well I think what the movie is trying to say is to be yourself and don't rely on other people to become great. And what I also got out the film is that the barbie doll is perfect and barbie doesn't want to be barbie anymore because she realizes she's not perfect which explains the ending montage of all the imperfect daughters and mothers. I did not think this movie was sexist or attacking men and I didn't get offended at all.i actually did like it when ken was crying, dancing, and laughing I think the film actually shows men have emotion too. That's what I got out the film
I loved the movie I really love the concept of perfectism and I love how it showcases finding a self of idenifty between men and woman
"I am become a Barbie girl, a destroyer of Barbie worlds"
Ryan gosling was my favorite and he was really the reason I liked the movie.
you better say ridiculously good karsten or i will cry
Also love the irony that (from comments and reviews) it seems that a vast majority came away from a feminist (right?) movie thinking a man was the best part of it 😂
ikr i was thinking that too. Yet even still, it's hard to deny that Ryan Gosling as Ken was SUPER DUPER charismatic the entire time. I was laughing every time he was on screen.
I absolutely loved the film, there were a few things that could’ve been cut out but it was definitely a really good film, it proves even though women fight for things they can change back, I think kens personality was defiantly funny, I recon they could’ve added a few more things but defiantly very good! I suggest you watch!

My 16 month old girl was freaking out over this movie. We took her to the drive in, she was waving at the screen and dancing through the film. I will say she does not get screentime and does not at this time have a Barbie, I guess she will be getting a Barbie pretty soon!
All the guys on here complaining that this movie “hates men” or is “anti-man” are probably all the same people who say “nobody can take a joke anymore!”
Exactly 💀
I think the emotional beats to make me cry flew me over, but man what a funny, incredibly poignant movie. I'm sure a lot of reviews from men are going to see *that scene* and think they're being talked down to or something, but it's such a great message and incredibly heartwarming to see a movie like this in 2023. It truly does feel like a blast from the past.
Yeah, the ending where they go back to being useless after the movie portrays them as sexist and destructive. It's TFA all over again. In a year the hype is gone and you'll see this as the terrible shitty product it always was.
It’s really fun but it was so wa wa being a women so hard
@@epicsponge7934you’re clearly just a man that’s hurt that but every movie is about you
@@epicsponge7934I kinda agree it was a bit like shoved in our face in the movie and the movie only shows the good parts of being a man but none of the bad bits, like crime, gangs, war, suicide etc. etc, which I understand because this movie was meant to be light-hearted and was targeted towards women.
@@user-zy7jx2rn1j I disagree that it only showed the good parts of being a man. The whole "Kendom" was supposed to show how toxic masculinity negatively affects men as well. From the beginning, the narrator stated that it would only be a good day if Ken was acknowledged by Barbie, and at the end it drove home the point about how a lot of modern men feel that external factors (like having a girlfriend) determine their self worth.
Wow, this movie was some of the most fun I've had watching a movie in years. It had me smiling and laughing and feeling from beginning to end. A triumph from a writing, acting and visual standpoint.
Only watching this for Ryan Gosling (hes literally me)
Hey thanks for watching my movie
This movie was just a masterpiece. The kind of movie I can see myself looking back at in 40 years and still getting excited about it. Whether from a production standpoint, or the storyline, the acting. Take your pick.
Having grown up around only women as a guy I was always a feminist, but it almost felt like Barbie reintroduced me to it. I've seen countless takes on it from the view of women, but I feel like the superficiality of Barbie as a character or concept made it seem quite different. And besides that, seeing all those stories on social media about people's experiences watching the movie warms my heart

Yeah, it's a great movie and the production and costume design are definitely Oscar worthy. But it's not the kind of movie that gets Oscars for acting...
Some actors did an amazing job portraying their character, but a lot of the actors in the movie…well, let’s just say you could tell they were having fun.
I'm also only interested in Barbie because of Greta Gerwig. Personally far more excited about Oppenheimer but seeing Barbie the very next day
I loved this movie for so many reasons. My only critique is I wish they delved into the relationship between the mom and daughter a bit more. I feel like they set up to go more in depth with them and then just forgot about it
I was gaslit into thinking this was going to be good
Barbie is literally me.
This movie was a dissappointment. It did not keep in line with traditional Barbie movie feel. If you've watched every Barbie movie tv show with your kids you'll get what i mean. This was NOT Barbie and Ken, it was two completely different personalities. It was confusing, way too political with adult Themes. My young kids thought it was wierd! Do not recommend if your looking for the real Barbie.
1:16 I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! 🌺
The whole theatre applauded at one point and both my daughters loved it.
The movie was perfect for me. Yea the message was kinda preachy, especially when the mother spent like 3 minutes talking about how every women's life sucks, but they did make some good points and the costumes and comedy made up for it. The only thing I actually hated about it was the daughter. She was a major brat and she never apologized to her mom for being a jerk
And funnily enough, the daughter and her friends are references to the Bratz dolls 😭 I felt the same way as well though.
You’re so right about Ken being Ryan Goslings Kendall Roy role
Just two Kens being sad and not knowing what they are outside their “purpose”
I’ve had a plan to watch this with someone for half a year and they dropped out a day before it came out
lmao I had the same situation with my friend and I was the one who dropped out because my friend(now ex-friend) is an asshole
The walls in my theater must have been pretty thin, because I could feel and hear the impact of every explosion from the Oppenheimer movie next door. Every time it happened, I thought there was an explosion in the Barbie movie and something crazy was about to go down. Did anyone else have this experience?
