The story of Onward is actually based around the director losing his father when he was a baby and using his older brother as a "father figure". This is why it feels so real and is handled very well, because it is real
I didn’t know that. That’s amazing
I don’t think it’s that’s simple, Soul and the Incredibles feel more grounded, 8/10 for effort.
@@thomasthecommentrater3703 Onward was 9.5/10 at least imo. Those movies are 8/10
The message of Monsters University is that just because you love something doesn't mean you're good at it or can make a career out of it. Which, after the hundreds of kids' movies saying you can do anything if you want it enough, seems like a pretty important dose of reality.
Reading this now a month later I think this is kinda harsh; and clashes with what I believe the actual message is. Yes, not everyone can be good at the things they specifically love and want to do, but that doesn’t mean you have to give it up entirely. You can do other things related to it. Such as the case of how Mike found a place in scaring by helping Sully become the scariest monster around. In a way he’s still doing what he loved and dreamed as a kid, but in a different way. The message is that even if you’re not good at something, that doesn’t mean you have to give up on it.
i think its more about finding purpose in something you are passionate about but not really in the way you expected.
cus like, mike DOES get a career in scaring at the end, just not in the way youd expect. weird comparison but kinda like how in Cars 3 Lighting Mcqueen after being retired still finds purpose in racing but not actually by racing but rather by coaching(? the other yellow car whose name i dont remember cus why would i :)
but Mike did make a career out of it, just not in the way he expected. That’s the actual message, you can still do what you love but it just may not be in the way that you think. For example, a person who loves music wanting to be a famous rockstar but they end up being a respected music producer instead.
i have a bit of a love/dislike relationship with Monsters University. As you said yes I love how it touched on that topic and it did do it well, but as a movie, I kind of thought it was just okay, or medicore. But I enjoy it for the most part.
I've always liked Monsters University, it's not as good as Monsters Inc but it is a good prequel. Remember seeing a video highlighting how it also deals with disability in a healthy way, through Mike not being scary in no way he can actually help. Just like in real life, he works the hardest out of anybody but just can't win. The movie has him unknowingly cheat and while it works, it doesn't benefit him in the long run and the message instead turns into thinking outside of the box, sort of. Mainly just him securing a job at the place he dreamed of working in, supporting scarers.
And when you think about it, his greatest weakness ends up being his greatest advantage. He looks non threatening so he'll find it easier to make kids laugh.
okay but besides Ratatouille being an amazing story and great movie, it's incredibly accurate to the culinary world. French chefs have praised the movie for that and in culinary school, we've watch scenes of it to understand classical techniques. the scene where he made the ratatouille specifically can be paused at every moment and explained by a restaurant professional. From the mandolin to the usage of the cartouche to the plating, it's all accurate and practical to an actual kitchen (minus the rats). Overall, the movie is genius and absolutely incredible
“minus the rats” lol
AHH YESSSS
The amount of detail put into the movie was so incredible
Depending on the kitchen, the rats may be present
@@BeondTheKDGaming oh i know, and if its not rats its cocktroaches. I've work in restaurants where they had cocktoaches but also one where they had both rats and cocktoaches unfortunately
Mostly accurate and practical except the copper EVERYTHING, that shiz is expeeensive. Whoever they asked to give their professional opinion on this loved the crap out of their copper. I think they used a copper speed rack in one scene and about died at the thought of the cost of the thing. Also the walk in's of the film, not enough labeling and the FIFO is questionable at best. Still my favorite movie as a child and still in my top five to this day.

Monsters University explores disability, ableism and how sometimes you just aren't right for the job. Mike is at an immediate disadvantage on the Scare course compared to the monsters that have "good" genes that make them look fearsome naturally. He has to work harder than every other student on that course and even trains the rest of Oozma Kappa to harness what is unique about them to be scary for the Scare Games. And yet after all that, Mike just isn't scary. He knows all the theory, had worked his butt off but when it comes down to it, he can't scare kids. But he knows HOW to scare kids and that's why he becomes such a fantastic coach for Sully and they obviously end up getting jobs at Monsters Inc. and become the top scaring team! Sometimes you inherently don't have the ability to do something, but you can use what you know to help others and achieve things neither of you could do on your own. A lot of people didn't think much of Monsters University, but I like it a lot.
I like Monsters U alot too. I feel people are sooo nostalgic for the original that they'll trash anything that comes after it without actually giving it a shot.
This is exactly what makes MU so great. It’s one of the best Pixar sequels in my opinion. Also now with being in college and a fraternity I relate to it so much more now.

FINALLY someone is giving the love that ratatouille deserves. This film is nothing more than a piece of art, a majestic piece of art. I’ve watched this movie many times since it’s release and I’m still to this day entertained every time I watch it. Ratatouille is phenomenal and I really think everyone should watch it.
It's easily in my favourites

You know it’s a very good movie when you can recite 90% of it by memory. That’s what I say.
Underrrated disney/pixar movie of all time.

The guy make this video is a IDIOT
Exactly, this comment is perfect
Do any of you know that people can have different opinions?
Agree cars is a childhood masterpiece to Me
Cars kinda sucks, its boring, it makes absolutely no sense, it doesn't work
You can tell a movie is great, when you can remember it part-by-part when only watching it once. Toy Story (the full series), Ratatouille, Incredibles, Cars, etc. you can remember almost the full-story off the top of your head without re-watching the movie. Boy, do I love Toy Story and Ratatouille.
that's a terrible measure of quality.
Monsters University literally taught kids: You can have dreams all you want, but that doesn't make then reachable. You'll probably fail, and you can't always get everything you want. That is a MASSIVELY important message to teach kids. Seriously give it a rewatch, dude. But great list overall
Edit. Thanks for all the likes, guys :)
Not only that, It teaches that even with that "disabilities", you still can acomplish your dreams in a way. Mike still was able to work at his dream company, even though he wasn't scary
Yeah MU says a lot and he really didn't acknowledge it. It is honesty a really good movie and deserves a much higher spot.
Who cares?, the rest of the movie is forgettable
Fame Lord the only part of the movie I remembered was when they went to the human world and that’s it
That's a fair point, but a good message in a mediocre movie isn't really impressive and it doesn't hit as hard as it could have.
Besides, it threw all the uniqueness of the monster world from the first movie out the window for a generic college campus.
he really ranked toy story 2 the lowest out of the four- I need a minute
As much as I love TS2, I think the same🤣
I legit had to pause the video to regain some sanity ohmy goodness
I respect his opinions but I would be lying if I didn't say WTF out loud.
he ranked bugs life 18 and cars 17...hes one of these edgy idiots who thinks what he says is interesting when all he says is the most bland stuff
@@razkable I kinda have my issues with the way Karsten presents his opinions, but I mean I personally had Bugs Life at the very bottom just because I feel it doesn’t compare with the other films in the golden age era such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Nemo, etc. Also, I had the original Cars a little lower as well, but I actually really thoroughly enjoy that film. It’s just that other than nostalgia there’s not a TON there for me & a reason put it on at this age.

I love Monster’s University. The message that just because you don’t necessarily have the ability to follow your dreams doesn’t mean you can’t be successful. I think that’s an incredibly mature message to send to kids and I appreciate it for that. Also it’s just extremely well animated, the sets and backgrounds are incredibly detailed, funny, and very sincere. One of my faves
MU is my favourite movie
Having recently rewatched MU I completely agree. I thought the ending in particular was genius and the idea that sometimes even if you work really hard you still can't get want you want was a really ballsy message for a "kid's" movie. I've heard the complaint that it has no tension because you already know what happens to the characters thanks to Monster's Inc, but I don't think that's true at all. The entire plot was throroughly engaging and it's a movie just as much about the journey as the destination.
I'm SO GLAD I'm not the only one who loves MU! The movie gets WAY too much hate!
Omfg just yes thank you for putting this opinion up

I remember seeing Up with my grandma on some random day. We both thought it would sort of suck, but we walked away being blown away. It’s not my favorite Pixar movie and I think it grows worse with each rewatch. But it is definitely one of my favorite memories I’ve had with my grandma.
Why does it grow worse with each rewatch to you?
Up isn’t my favorite either, but I found it very adorable. My only complaint is we don’t really get a lot of insight into Carl and Ellie’s marriage aside they couldn’t have children and were never able to afford a trip to their dream vacation. I’m just curious as to why the movie didn’t explore them considering adoption or at least having the joy of babysitting their nieces and nephews. Legit there can be a multitude of factors as to why couples can’t adopt, and that be an interesting topic to resolve and explore. I just felt the tone shift was a little awkward, going from a more retrospective style with the music to then being thrust into a more modern style and especially having Russel being an annoying kid who’s just trying to help (though for his badge) and helping Carl understand to enjoy the rest of his life instead of living in the past and unable to let go of Ellie.

True
I love cars man this hurt my heart 🥺💔
The opening scene in up is a beauty. The music, the feels, the visuals. Holy crap. No person could resist feeling sad with it. It's so sad. The soundtrack during it captures the feels so well, and when all of the instruments except the piano stop and it's left with the solo as it shows the death of the wife, a character that you manage to feel attached to after a 5 minute intro, holy crap.
Honestly I really loved monsters university. I watched it during a time where I really felt like a fuck up in college and like i was stupid for not being able to figure out what i was doing. I think the lessons and the overall themes in monsters university really hit home with a lot of young adults in college or entering the workforce and thats why i rlly loved it.
Monsters University came out during the summer before I moved to my first year of secondary school. I felt really connected to Mike because for the first time it feels like it’s great to relate to a character who is going to the next stage of education and being excited for it even though he is not scary which reflects on to how I look forward to growing up and meeting new friends and creating new memories. I fail at every test but I don’t care because I love school so much. The movie is proper trash but I am glad back then, I was the appropriate target audience for a kids movie to watch this.
Monsters University is one of my favorite movies Karsten really didnt give it credit
The main problem with Monsters University isn’t that it’s a bad movie. It’s clearly not and every Karsten says so. But not only is it going up against the rest of Pixar’s legacy but the plot and idea is just super average. Take away the monsters it’s just a typical college student proving himself movie

I'd argue toy story 2 is significant for diving into the existential dread of being a toy. As a story for Woody, I think it might be the strongest of the movies (maybe rivaled closely by toy story 4). For me personally, Jesse's flashback scene is the most powerful moment of the movies too.

Mikes journey of understanding that there are some things that he can’t do no matter how hard he tries but it’s fine because there are other aspects that’s he truly gifted out is so good. While the movie is just fine this aspect is truly special and so Pixar and is a lesson that is so applicable to my life right now as I’m in college myself now

Mathis Gantier i second this, Paris is way over romanticized
I feel like Paris is basically European New York but idk

I haven't seen Onward yet
To be honest, Monsters University while being such a miedocre film, his messege and main moral od pretty good. It isn't "follow your Dreams, ewentually you will accomplish them" moral, but more like "Maybe you don't need college to achieve something", which is very accurate to me
Mikołaj500 also “your dreams aren’t always what they seem” (in a good way) mike thought he had everything planned out to be a scare we but then got kicked of school and got a new and better dream
Wish it could've been told better, but yeah, that's what I came away from his movie.
"Lawrence the Cable Guy."
Even as a child I already could understand that Rattatouille was a special gem and I still love it to this day
tbh i would have to see all the movies again to see on what we agree and what not but the points you gave and how you explained everything makes it sound like this is 100% the truth
smh, Schaffrillas isn't white, he's a crab lmao nice try
He's a singing turtle, according to Nostalgia Critic

cars just holds a special place in my heart. it's a humbling story about fame, legacy, respect and competitive integrity. I never got why people hated it so much.
I enjoy Cars (the first one) I just think compared to Pixar's other films it's not as groundbreaking. On its own though, it's great and very enjoyable!
I watched monsters university the night before I moved into college and again the day I moved back home for summer. It means a lot to me. It may not be the most amazing but it’s super special to me
Ratatouille has been my favorite Pixar movie since I was a kid to the point where I didn't really realize people were sleeping on it until I started watching reviews and stuff of it. It boggles my mind, especially because rewatching it now it holds up even better than I remember.
I’d say TS2 is the hottest take on the list.
Super Joe Reviews I should rewatch it, I’ve seen you and numerous other people praise it lately and right now I just don’t really remember it fondly
Yeah. I understand Karsten's points but there is NO WAY it's the worst movie in the franchise.
@@habibrahman8346 Well now's the perfect time to rewatch it! It's on Disney+
Of all the movies here my hot take would be that UP is just a little too high.
No, he got it right. It's definitely the worst of the 4. For me it's 3 > 1 > 4 > 2 though
I wasn't expecting Monsters University to be THAT low. I actually loved it.
Same I love it too
BlueLemon Pixar has made lots of better films, most notably Monsters Inc
I thought that it was fine and being a sequel to one of my favorite pixar movies it was really underwhelming in my opinion more underwhelming then Incredibles 2
yo fr
Yeah
Ratatouille is my favorite movie of all time. Not only is it the perfect story, the score, the animation, the whole vibe...It’s so amazing. I cry on the same beats every time. It has such amazing lines. Ego’s ending monologue was so beautiful and so inspiring. “Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist can come from anywhere.” What a beautiful quote. A beautiful movie. And by FAR Pixar’s best movie. Thank you.
man's really didn't do cars 2 like that.... i actually liked it a lot
"both visually and script wise, this story holds well"
*shows clip of Randall getting the shit beaten out of him*
Now that we know that Karsten and Schaffrillas are aware of each other's existence, I'm expecting a collab sometime in 2020. Don't disappoint us lads.
listen to karsten's podcast
first thing I thought too lmao
I'm glad you gave Onward a positive review! (Given it's my favorite Pixar movie.) Also, Purple is my favorite color but I don't mind if you hate it.
I’d like to personally thank Randy Newman for providing perfect soundtracks for many Pixar films.
And Michael Giacchino, and Thomas Newman, nearly all composers and/or their soundtracks
This man really put The Good Dinosaur ahead of Cars 🤦🏼♂️
Edit: Cars 2 and 3 were bad and worse than The Good Dinosaur. But the original is a classic
Good Dinosaur is overhated, and Cars is really overrated.
I mean not as bad as saying toy story 2 is the worst toy story, like is he insane
TheFnames I agree with you on that one 😂
cars 1 is should be top 3. Cars 2 and 3 were dog shit thought
Jake Daddio I agree Cars 1 was really good and was a staple of my childhood
i don’t think coco should be that low because of the tiger thing when the real emotional ending comes after
Moonstorm1 remember me still gets me crying every single time I watch it. Or even think about it.
Only thing with Coco was I just found the kid kind of annoying apart from that I think it's perfect. I would've loved if they found a way to tell that story through Hector as a protagonist instead but it's still great. I think he ranked it pretty fairly
I agree Kokichi Oma, CoCo is a masterpiece
Yeah imagine ranking toy story movies above Coco... blegh
Coco is easily top 3 and by far the most underrated Pixar out there. It was advertised as a spooky Mexican Halloween style movie instead of the power of music and the human understanding of family and death.
Mine is Onward, been obsessed with this movie for 2 years (since the teaser trailer came out). My other favorite Pixar movies I was obsessed with is A Bug's Life and Inside Out.
There are a couple swaps I would make, but overall I agree with almost all of this list.
P.s. Yes, Ratatouille is without a doubt the best Pixar film and in my opinion the best animated film of all time.
Cars is better then the good dinosaur also
Cars 2 and MU were better than both brave and The Good dinosaur imo.
Hi spencer 👋👋 noice tu see you hrre
Me personally I'd switch Ratatouille and Monsters inc. but thats just a personal preference.
I was so surprised to see Ratatouille at number one. I thought I was the only one who thought it was Pixar's best, but I was wrong.
adopted child It’s not better then Wall-e
@@Jackrabbit7 I would disagree, but WALL-E is really great
I honestly prefer Wall-e because that film has one of the best graphics in the world and the story is so perfectly done. And also the comedy is pretty great lol. Still, ratatouille is a pretty close second
Even I think that ratatouille is underrated but I just wouldn’t put it at #1
I would probably put finding Nemo, the incredibles, toy story 3, cars (I have a soft spot for cars), and monsters inc ahead of it
@@owenbearman8995 I agree. I also have a soft spot for cars since I loved it as a kid
Going into this video I was very worried about ratatouille slander because it doesn’t get enough love but I was so exited when I saw he ranked it #1 because it’s literally my top Pixar movie if not top movie in general!
That moment when you realize that A Bug’s Life is a parody of the communist revolution
