  • KIBBE ARCHETYPE System, explained!
    The Kibbe Archetype System, commonly known as the ‘Kibbe Body Type System’ (but that’s the wrong name) is an image system designed to create harmony with the natural characteristics of a woman’s body. If you’ve ever heard someone say: “I’m a flamboyant gamine” or a “Theatrical Romantic” or a “Flamboyant Natural”... they are talking about their Kibbe Image ID!
    If you’re looking to learn how to dress for your body type, learning about the Archetypes that David Kibbe identified can be a super useful tool - but there’s a catch! Arriving at your correct archetype can be incredibly challenging, and even though there was a Kibbe Body Type Quiz that circulated a few years ago, the quiz has been disproved by Kibbe himself. As far as I know, the Kibbe Verified Celebrities are the only people confirmed to be the correct archetypes… and it’s not a very size inclusive list.
    I tried to put together for you the most basic of the Kibbe concepts (ying and yang, the style families, etc), so that you can get an idea of how the system works. Think of this as a “Intro to Kibbe”, “Kibbe 101” video, or perhaps a “Kibbe for beginners” video. But please keep in mind, this is a VERY nuanced system, and I am only touching on the very very basics! To learn more, I highly recommend you check out the ‘Strictly Kibbe’ Facebook Group and learn from David Kibbe himself.

    This is one of the best Kibbe explanations I’ve seen on RUclips. I appreciate that you didn’t just point people to the very outdated test! I’ve been trying to work out my ID for quite some time, and I’m still not 100% certain! I started out with the test (oops), which gave me Soft Classic, but now I think I’m definitely either Soft Natural or Soft Dramatic (I’m leaning to Soft Dramatic). I figure that knowing I have yang bones and yin flesh is enough, so I’m not hung up on the specific type.

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  2 года назад

      What resources are you using to arrive at your ID? Are you part of the Facebook group?
      Something I find interesting is what you say - that you can have Yin flesh and Yang bones. That is something that I find tricky with Kibbe, because how do you differentiate Yin flesh from a little bit of extra weight, or yang from someone who is underweight for example?

    • @Keapix
      @Keapix 2 года назад +1

      I initially started with RUclipsrs, and then realised that there is a lot of misinformation out there, so I joined the FB group. I’m lucky in that I’ve been a lot of different weights, so I know that I still have soft flesh and curve at a low weight. I have long bones in my arms, legs, fingers, and neck, relative to my height, so I see the yang there. I do think Kibbe is far too complicated, and I probably should never have looked into it 😂

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  2 года назад

      Interesting!! Who was it that said that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication? I agree with you that it's too complicated, and it really makes me wonder why no one was trained in his system. I wonder if it is because if IS too complicated sometimes.

      For me, I went the approximate route. I'm 5ft.2in, don't look tall, and I have a lot of rounded shapes, so my options were either Romantic, Theatrical Romantic or Soft Gamine. In fact, the suggestions for the three are very similar, so I did a Venn diagram and prioritize wearing the common points. I suggest you also Venn the Soft Natural and Soft Dramatic, and take it from there.

    • @Keapix

    Actually I explored this system about a year ago. I was typed as a SN and that’s probably right. But actually applying the suggestions for my wardrobe led to me over analyzing things and took the joy out of dressing myself. So I decided that I would dress in clothes that I love and think look good on my body and stop trying to over think it.

    Excellent explanation!! I have studied the Kibbe system and was a member of the Strictly Kibbe facebook group. I also found his book in a thrift store for $1.50! His flowery words did nothing for my analytical mind. What really helped me narrow down my archetype was Aly Art's videos on RUclips which have so many wonderful examples of the different ID's standing next to each other. That's when I could clearly see that I am a Soft Gamine.

  • @CrankyGrandma
    @CrankyGrandma 2 года назад +5

    Definitely a much clearer explanation than other RUclipsrs! I have some trouble with the system. Skeletally I’m clearly an al”A” shape with narrow shoulders and wider hips. But flesh changes everything. I have a larger chest and that pretty much tosses the skeletal description out the window. I think looking at clothing that looks good on me might be the best way for me to tell. Kibbe’s Facebook group is hard to get in to.

    This was extremely helpful, thank you so much! Glad they’ve narrowed it down from 13 to 10 types - I’ve done the quiz many times and I scored pretty evenly between soft classic, theatrical romantic and romantic so I never really felt like I identified 100% with any of those three. Time to explore Soft Gamine!

  • @annaradcliffe
    @annaradcliffe 2 года назад +4

    Kibbe types can be such a rabbit hole! I thought it was ridiculous at first (mostly because of the type names, and the idea that personality is linked to body shape), but the more I learned about what the names stood for, the more it's helped me understand the differences in people's appearances, and why certain outfits look harmonious on certain bodies. I wasn't sure about my type for a long time, but now I'm confident that it's Soft Gamine. Quizzes were confusing, I ended up typing myself backwards by knowing certain things that look good on me, and recognizing them in the SG recommendations. High necklines, crisp borders, a broken silhouette, waist emphasis, and a well-defined shoulder just suit me better than the alternatives.
    I still find body archetypes really interesting, but I think the Kibbe system has certain limitations. For one, it seems unnecessary to combine verticality, width, and angularity into "yang" because there are different recommendations specific to each, not just general advice for all yang types. Also, the types don't account for much diversity at the tall end of the spectrum.
    I appreciate your nuanced take, especially that Kibbe doesn't own body analysis-these ideas can be developed between all of us!

    Great video Fernanda. I have seen so much information on the subject and I think that the conclusions are quiet subjective. At the end of the day, the best way to learn is to try things and then see what works. In my experience, many people are a combination not clearly one archetype or another (which is true in real life too), but I get using the method to see where we're leaning. Fernanda, I would like to take the time to say that this was an excellent assessment of the system. The fact that you referred to the classifications properly as ‘Image IDs’ or ‘Archetypes’ shows that you really understand the intention of the system. The Image IDs are broad concepts that one can embody by honoring the natural lines in their body and their own personal essence. I’ve been following the system for 2 years and have settled on Dramatic. It’s been absolutely perfect in helping me to identify why relaxed clothing or harsh color blocking looks quite separated from me.
    I need sleek and crisp pieces to absolutely look my best.

      Thank you! I’m so glad you discovered your best style through the system- and I love that you say it has been a 2+ year exploration. I think that style is a journey, one that is better understood over time. In that sense I agree with the system, though I do think it is helpful when someone can look at your body and show you how to identify ‘vertical line’, ‘double curve’ etc

    I find kibbe interesting, and more enlightening (for me) than the fruits. I've realised that I'm somewhere around classic/gamine which explains why extremely structured dramatic outfits and busy patterns or lots of frills/floofy detail never suited me, even if it was correctly fitting/cut for a pear shape. Insured of trying to fit myself into these kinds of 'trendy ' outfits that seemed nice on others (while i felt awkward and uncomfortable) i now wear simpler lines and patterns without looking overwhelmed, and have fun experimenting within those parameters !

      I do like that about the Kibbe system, that it's not about "Correcting" anything. Having a mix of concepts has been most helpful to me! I really like the method on Truth Is Beauty, which has similar archetypes to Kibbe. I use these ideas in conjunction with “fruit” shapes, color theory, etc. I think it’s most useful when you’re looking for guidance when you can tell something’s not working but can’t quite tell why. I’d never stop wearing a shirt just because it doesn’t suit Dramatic lines, but if it doesn’t feel right, I could ask “is it vertical enough?” “is the color too muted?” I know this was a short video but I appreciate your approach to the system and “Approximately Right” is a philosophy we definitely need to apply to more areas of life!

    Hi Fernanda. First time to comment but I've watched several of your vids by now. I'd like to say that you look loads better after you've embraced being a winter than when you were an autumn. As for my Kibbe body type, I've done the test twice and I think I'm either a DC or FN, but not sure. I'm 5'2" but don't look gamine & the gamine dress styles don't suit me. I'm not planning to incorporate the style recos for my type, since I usually just wear slacks & a top at the office. When I wear dresses, they tend to be A-line. What I've recently learned (and will implement) is color analysis. I've learned that I'm autumn (have always liked reds & yellows), but rust/ copper is my new friend! Now I understand why I never get compliments when I wear blue tops (but do when I wear reds & yellows). Thanks for the vid & good luck with your new HOC consultancy! 👍🏼🌻🌹

    • @vazq_Fernanda
      @vazq_Fernanda  2 года назад +1

      I agree with this. Especially nowadays I. meet women who really don't respond well to the hourglass typing, and prefer a more androgynous look. Styling everyone to that shape would not be helpful for all personalities, and I really believe that style can be helpful for everyone!

    • @marijeb278

      @@vazq_Fernanda absolutely!
      I love a classic hourglass-shape, but its just not the way I'm build, and trying to make me look like one doesn't do me any justice.
      And when thinking about the many people I find beautiful, a lot of them don't adhere to that very one-sided beauty ideal.
      Tall or petite, muscular or slender, thin or more robust, feminine or androgynous, there is so many ways to be beautiful.
      So that was quite enlightening about Kibbe for me, there is no preference of one type above the others, its just different types of beautiful.

  • @jamie7002
    @jamie7002 2 года назад +2

    I went into a deep Kibbe dive last summer and I THINK I’m mostly a Soft Classic, which made sense when I looked at photos of myself wearing certain garments I thought I looked better/worse in. It was pretty clear to me that anything really sharp ie) shoulder pads, angular necklines, and even sharp hair cuts really didn’t do anything for me, whereas lines that were a bit softer with just a very slight tailoring honoured my natural shape much more nicely. (Btw I like that you say “honour” and not “flatter”… flatter is so overused imo).
    But I DO disagree a bit with Kibbe about the weight gain part. I have found that now that I am 9 months post partum I am much more obviously a Soft Classic, as my features are a bit more round (little more weight, hips that were medium/borderline narrow before are a little rounder etc). But when I’m more in-shape (with even just a little bit of weight loss/muscle definition) my shoulders and face get a little more angular and defined and my overall shape is a bit straighter and I think more “Dramatic Classic”. So, I mean I’m still in the Classic Family, so maybe it doesn’t change drastically with weight fluctuations but I do think certain lines, structures, cuts and fabrics are more or less nice on me at different points in my life. And generally my weight has only fluctuated up or down 25-35 lbs at time, which isn’t a lot really. So I fail to see how someone’s type couldn’t change with a more significant weight loss or gain. True, their height, limb length etc won’t change but their whole body proportion might. I watched an episode of someone bariatric surgery journey last night and in their “after” photos they looked like a completely different person.
    But anyway, thanks for another great vid! Keep them coming! And I like the little “approximately right” channel name shoutout! As a perfectionist, I love the idea that we can mostly get something right and even if our best efforts aren’t 100%, it’s not a fail!

    I have heard about this system, but haven't looked into it before. I did a style ID quiz from Rachel from Truth is Beauty, I think her IDs are based on Kibbes, but she extended them. The quiz consisted of taking a picture of your face and seeing which types of shapes look harmonious next to it. It was a really enlightening experience, because it was really clear that some shapes (like long lines) look really nice with my face, whereas other shapes make it look totally out of place.
    The Style ID I arrived at was dramatic-natural-classic - this felt very fitting to me and my "essence", but in the end I found it difficult to really adapt this to my wardrobe, so I haven't really done anything with it. I find it way easier to identify what I don't like and don't look good in, but I find it difficult to hone in on what is best. In contrast, finding out my colour type was so easy to adapt and adjust my clothes accordingly.

      I like to remind myself that knowing your type is not about looking the same as everyone else in that type, it's about how you interpret it. My essence is very ingenue, yet I don't like pure ingenue details - it makes me feel childish. Taking elements of that and giving them a bit of an edge is what makes me feel the most like myself.

    Hi Fernanda. I have done the Kibbe typing test numerous times. I think I am a Theoretical Romantic. I figured that was the best ID through the process of elimination. To begin I am petite so that really narrowed down my choices. I was confused between Theatrical Romantic and Soft Gamine. So I did a clothing experiment. I really don't have a lot of Gamine type of clothes. I don't look or feel my best in chopped lines, colour blocking and I hate collars closed at the top. So I sort of decided that I don't "feel" Gamine. I am trying to combine the Theatrical Romantic with my Type 1 / 2 in Dressing Your Truth system. I thought I would need to do a lot of de-cluttering and more shopping. Actually I already have the clothes I need as a Theoretical Romantic. However my problem starts with colour. I am a True Spring with most clothing in black. Where I live in Canada the national colour is black, black and more black. Great video and thanks for explaining it in great detail.

    I’m so glad I did Dressing Your Truth course by Carol Tuttle years ago; she uses Yin/Yang but it makes so much more sense than Kibbe and she trains *you* how to analyze *yourself* to discover your own personal beauty expressed through the energy of movement. I took the quiz and thought I was gamine but then I thought theatrical romantic. After a lot of thinking about not having all the qualities of either one, I thought I might be natural(too short though). Last night I popped a hat on my head after a shower and it looked like something a gamine or classic might wear. It was fake fur and had a small brim. So now I think I'm a dramatic classic. David Kibbe is right in saying it takes 6 months to figure out what type you are.

    I'm a dramatic. I came to this conclusion by understanding shapes, dimension without comparing my frame to others. I'm in the official Kibbe group on FB but I haven't started the exercises yet. I plan to but it's time consuming, it starts with watching 4 movies. You delivered the Kibbe concept pretty effectively except one discrepancy, according to Kibbe the yin and yang is not based on masculine and feminine. From what I understand Yin is soft, round and Yang is sharp, broad. Another example would be light vs dark.

The trouble I have is that I could fit both descriptions and being overweight when I found out about Kibbe (have always been very petite otherwise) has made me softer. I feel the lack of verified overweight examples really hurts this search I've had, and the ideas on TR are very confused compared to the actual celebrity examples I see that vary in curvyness. Hi Fernanda, thanks a lot for your Video.
      iam not a native english speaker:
      I discovered kibbe 9/20 through a German you tuber + immediately took the test, which I then modified umpteen times over the next few months. I was hooked and watched a lot of videos (a lot of Aly Art, Merriem Style,...), researched everything I could get my hands on on the topic, researched every free minute I had on the internet. Kibbe is a real challenge, even more so for non-English speakers, but most of all it was great fun to explore new things, I wanted to change/improve my dressing style as my body/taste changes with age.
      I decided against the FB group mainly because of the English language. Reddit was added, ead I really recommend!
      Due to my height of 1.70 m, only the 4 largest kibbe types came into question for me. my physique corresponded most closely to DC, but I was still unsure and really wanted clarity. That's why I let myself be typed by a young woman with at least 35 photos sent 5/2021: she also came to DC (I paid about 40€, it was worth it to me, otherwise I wouldn't have done it).
      In my eyes, Kibbe is one of the best tools for dressing well because you bring everything with you (I mean your body) and his recommendations for all 13 or 10 body types just make sense, are relatable and honor you own body, what more does a woman want?
      you don't have to make science out of it either. I'm grateful to Kibbe for his work, and I'm not really constrained by just being DC, I'm enriched by knowing (roughly) how to best dress myself (foch I'm still learning). and if I feel like it, I just go beyond the borders of DC, so what? Who cares? nobody but me.
      of course it would be nice if he did 1 revised book but it's his choice. Kibbe is accessible to all and at no financial cost, but his method can be very time consuming, but some people discover their body type very quickly (it took me about 8 intense months to work it out on my own and then finally get it confirmed).
      I have benefited from Kibbe and would recommend "his" modified concept at any time. no more and no less.
      all other methods out there don't work for me (as well).
      everyone has the (agonized) choice of finding the method that suits them or simply dressing as they like, detached from all rules. everyone decides voluntarily and freely for or against.
      Fashion isn't a science, it should be fun first, right?

      Tell me more about that - what makes you feel this way?

    • @Tess78uk
      @Tess78uk 2 года назад

      @@vazq_Fernanda Two main reasons. First, it assumes there are a limited number of physical/aesthetic categories based on physical appearance. But there are so many combinations of physical traits, (e.g. face shape, limb proportions, vertical and horizontal proportions at multiple positions in the body etc), that any ‘category’ that combines several is really just an arbitrary selection. Look for other combinations of traits and you could produce a whole different set of categories.
      My biggest issue with it though, is it gets the purpose of aesthetics back to front. Our aesthetic choices do not/should not depend primarily on our physicality, they depend on our psychology/personality. Confusing the physical and psychological has a long and murky history, for example, the Victorian phrenologists who thought ‘criminal types’ had a differently shaped skull to everyone else. Or today’s sexists/misogynists, who would say female bodies are inherently weak, soft and rounded, and ‘ought’ to be dressed to emphasis ‘feminine’ personality traits, which ‘naturally’ accompany such a body. The Kibbe system suggests because you have a body with certain characteristics, you should adopt a certain aesthetic, which is in ‘harmony’ with those characteristics.
      Well, what if the woman with ‘romantic’ characteristics doesn’t want to look ‘romantic’? What if ‘I’m soft, placid and traditionally feminine’ is not the message she wants to send with her clothing? What if studded biker boots and industrial goth aesthetic is more her thing? I’m pretty sure the primary purpose of clothing, beyond keeping us warm and comfortable, is to send social messages about how we want to express ourselves. If we want to be seen as spiky, or powerful, we can do that with our dress. If we want to be seen as free-spirted and fun-loving, again, we can convey that. We can even show we are dedicated to a profession with choices in our dress. That is the key function of aesthetics in clothing - to translate aspects of our personality and psychology and express ourselves. It’s nothing to do with ‘harmonising’ with some arbitrary physical traits of our bodies .
      I don’t think systems which encourage women to heavily fixate on boundaries, categories, or limitations inherent in their physical bodies are very helpful. We get enough of that in Western culture already. Wear the clothes that make you FEEL good. Wear the ones that make you feel most yourself. Wear the ones that match your personality. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      @@vazq_Fernanda To expand on what I’ve just said a bit, in terms of what I’d like to see from you tube peeps, like yourself, I think focusing on how you create aesthetic elements of style is the positive and helpful way forward, (rather than body type systems like Kibbe). So, you could explore how you can create different aesthetics (like edgy, romantic, preppy, bohemian etc). What style elements can women use? What happens when you mix them? I think helping women develop the tools they need to achieve the style aesthetics they are drawn to is really helpful.
