Thanks Sam!
Your materials are best for beginners like me, thank you for what you do! very valuable material. 💪👍
Greetings from Poland.
Awesome stuff Jeff and big thanks for all the effort you are putting into your vids. I spent a couple of hours practicing tight orbits today (5m radius) around flag sticks on the local park. It's hard but I love the challenge. Will check out the more automated modes tomorrow! Cheers from Sydney, Aust - Dave
great video Jeff clear and concise top notch
I was glad to see the point of interest auto function on the Mavic air. I agree, circles and variations of circles is the technique to master. Thanks for posting Jeff.
Thanks Oregon POV! You can also turn the mavic facing outward, while still flying in POI mode. Could be interesting in the right spot.
Just got my Air yesterday and your videos have been awesome on helping me understand the dynamics of getting better shots. I had a phantom 3 standard before. I am really looking forward to taking the drone out on some of my motorcycle rides and getting shots of the views in the ozarks.
Sweet!!! i am excited for you. Always happy to help.
Extremely Informative!!! Great Job presenting the your vast knowledge! Thanks!
so well explained. I was struggling outside trying to understand what to do, I couldn't see my screen well but with this video, I'm ready to try it this morning. thanks
Ririlan thats great. Happy flying!
Very cool, I'm getting the mavic air 1 in the next few days so will be trying out all the modes.
Great tutorial! Can't wait to try the POI mode out!
You got this Jeff! Great tutorial, thanks.
I've tried to use active track to make a circle around an object and that works quite well. I don't remember which of the sub-modes it was, probably spotlight. I've marked the object and then just used pushed the right controller to the right (or left) to make the circle. The advantage is that you don't have to get above the object first (like in POI mode), but the disadvantage is that it has to be an object recognizable optically for active track to work.
Jeff I’ve been using the normal way and I must say when I finally get it right my fingers are tired. I will try your other two options soon. Thank you for your videos.
Jose F Rodriguez i know what you mean. I hate it when i start to twitch in the middle of a shot or when its cold.
Yet another very informative vid, well done mate.
Thank you i appreciate that Alwyn!
Excellent tuition sir! Thank you!
Thank you Stuart, I appreciate the thumbs up!
Very informative, still learning my bird. easy and clear to understand, thanks for doing this vid!
Thanks Blain, you are most welcome!
I´m going to video shoot a castle tomorrow in the summer weather, this information was very good for me. Now I can practice today. Thanks!
I like the video. I appreciate your explanation of the technique involved in making this shot work. I'm going to start working on my orbits and using your video as my reference. Thanks again!
Thanks for the thumbs up Ken!
Thanks Ken, Happy Flying!
Great video, very informative, good job!
Good info. Thanks.
DJI does a horrible job of providing usage and training materials, so this kind of instructional is always appreciated
Raleigh!!!! great Jeff, really helpful video.
Thanks Austin!
POI is my favourite too but never tried manual with tripod mode and grid line, thanks very much for the info i will try
Great clear info, well explained, thanks. I prefer flying in manual to be able to use the 180° rule, i.e double the shutter to framerate. When do you set-up the exposure? before you enter POI mode or after? or else it would default to auto (and that's horrible as we all know)
Great video!
Great video Jeff. I always fly manually and with practice you can pull off great POI circles and have the option of letting the subject to slide out of frame at the end for a cut point. Cheers
Greg Hilton thank you sir! I definitely still struggle in normal mode trying to transition smoothly from poi to slide out.
Every time you fly, the first battery is for practice and as you said in the video "Practice, Practice, Practice." Cheers Jeff
New subscriber, great tips and hints for a better video, thanks you!
Thanks Steve!
Great tutorial, thanks, it´s a dream of mine to circle tall buildings, which you do so effortlessly. I´m a newbie awating my Mavic Mini, which doesn´t have a POI feature, but could you use the quickshot circle mode to replicate POI?
Hello . I watched your movie for the first time. I have subscribed, of course. I am glad that it can be translated in Polish. I come from Poland and I don't know English very well. Subtitles in Polish make it very easy. I will watch all your movies. I have Dji Mavic Air. A lot of health for you to make as many films as possible ;)
Thank you. Right now I am doing all manual learning. I will use this teaching in a few days.
Cool, thanks for the thumbs up!
Well put together Jeff. Sport mode is tough to orbit bc your attitude usually is affected by wind at some point in the orbit and the gimbal has issues keeping the horizon level. I only do sportsmode orbiting at a max of about 20 to 25 mph. Its like you said very tough though. Hardly ever comes out with good enough quality.
Droning about NW thanks for the comment. I figured someone must have tried it with some jedi skills!
Very nice video tips again. Easy explained. I will try this on my next flight. One thing @4.59 you say left, but you're going right?
Chris Wood ha ha you are right! I must have been directionally challenged for a moment 😁
Thank you Jeff great tutorial 👍
Thank you sir!
awesome tips! thank you!
Gr8 info Jeff....Thanks so much!!
Randy you are most welcome!
Great vid ! I believe there’s a way to adjust the left and right stick speed as to make a smoother transition.
yes you can setting the sensitivity of the sticks movement in the APP
I prefer to do it manually, but actually using the circle function of active track trace, will do the job if you can't get over the object and set the center of the radius with POI.
Thank you for the video! Are you excited for the new Mavic Air 2? greetings from Mexico.
Jeff, great video, thanks! One question: Do you need to be already recording the video when you set up the POI mode? Thank you and Happy New Year!
What a freaking amazing video.
Great video - thank you!
Thanks for another helpful video😀...God bless
Thanks Lou!
Great video Jeff, I’m new to the small drone (MA) and I see several of the RUclipsrs talk about making adjustments in the DJI app on the gimbal and to make smoother, whats your take seems the modes you used are very smooth.
Thanks Brad, i appreciate you saying that, and welcome to the channel. i definitely recommend making the adjustments. Jump to 8:15 on this video to see how i have mine set on the MA: ruclips.net/video/J98PIr6PYIs/видео.html . Happy Flying!
Question: I understand the ND8 and D-CINELIKE, but what are the (0,-3, and -2) settings? Thanks! Videos are really good and appreciate the time you and effort you put in to them. I've only had my Mavis Air 3 days so I'm still learning.
Great video again Jeff. Very helpful. I assume the quick shot circle mode is not much help here since it only does 1 rotation?
Thanks Drone head. Yep exactly. Additionally with POI mode you get to adjust the gimbal and Yaw wherever you want instead of having to focus on the object with the Quickshot. The mavic just keeps flyiing in a circle, and you still have control of everything else.
The Mavic Air was my first drone Then I got the Mavic 2 Zoom. I have learned to orbit manually. Have not even tried the AutoOrbit features the drones have. Maybe later I'll explore those auto features.
Thanks Monti!
Great tutorial. New Mavic pro pilot here. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Andy!
Hi Jeff.
Your video very help me understand my mavic air. Thank you.
I start watching all yours video. Sorry for my Engish. Iam from Czech Republic.
Hi Miki, thank you for the nice comment. Welcome to the channel all the way to the Czech Republic! Let me know what kinds of videos you like to see more of.
Hi Jeff
All yours video is absolutely the best! Last week I buy magic air more combo.I don't understand nothing because everything is only English language 😢 But now, when I see your video school I'm really very happy! More and more I understand.
Thank you very much for your school 👍 You are the best 👍

I started flying manually learning techniques and to be honest, I get better shots by flying manually. The only shot where I like a little assistance is when orbiting; I like to keep the gimbal locked onto a target if I am also changing my altitude whilst rotating as it tends to be quite challenging to adjust four parameters at the same time (altitude, strafe, rotation and gimbal pitch) while ensuring that the POI remains the focus and the transitions are smooth. With professional drones used for movies, there is one pilot operating the drone and a cameraman operating the gimbal and I can totally understand why :D.
Doing a manual shot of a POI rotation with altitude changes is by far the most challenging shot I have learned so far and here's a quick tip: go into your settings and play around with all your speed settings to find what suits YOU best. I found that normal was too sensitive and tripod lacked dynamism. I started with Cinematic mode and further tweaked a few settings to get those perfect shots. The cool thing about doing this manually is that you can then move away from your POI towards the horizon in a really smooth cinematic way that brings this little "extra" to your shot.
Great tip Ronin SamuraiTV! Thanks for your insight.
This is so cool! I want to orbit an old slender building nearby but am a little worried that I'll have connection issues by the Mavic Air being on the opposite side of the building. Perhaps I will circle more over than around, which should work.
Great video. Thanks
Thanks Pepe Deez Nutz! great name 😀
I try to fly manually as much as possible, just for the challenge's sake. :-) Although in tricky situations letting the drone do some of the stuff and pushing in and out on the sticks seems very smart!
What I would advise is to desensitize your yaw stick around the middle, so you can better dose it around the neutral field. It gains speed further outwards, so no control is 'lost'. (It's in the settings for the controller). Cheers from Athens, Dan
Agreed, good advice, thanks Dan!
I can't help you I'm a low hour pilot here just learning the Mavic air, thanks for the video. I couldn't help but notice you cut that last video short did you run into problems with the building that was coming in to screen? I noticed that you were flying below the roof of it.
Great Video thanks!
Thank you Lou!
Great tips. Thanks
Thanks Chris71319, i appreciate the thumbs up!
What is your best tip for flying in circles POI mode or manually? Let me know in the comments. I would really like to hear how you guys are accomplishing this technique.
I like using manual most purely for staying in control of the aircraft. However, out in the countryside or out of harms way I will use some of the more convenient flight programs
I am by no means an expert, but using Tripod mode helped me do POI manually. Of course, you can also make adjustments to your sticks to accomplish essentially the same thing, but the Tripod mode gives you those nice, slow, cinematic moves that a slow speed on the automated POI mode gives you.
So helpful!
very informative! thanks!
Thanks Allan!
amazing drone
Agreed!
Thank you for explanation! But if you started to set up the POI-mode you can begin video recording at any time by pressing the Record Button on your remote controller. So, you don't need to start recording before you start setting up the mode.
Yep you are correct, good clarification Lev.
i liked the video. By the way i need to ask you a question. When you put a fake gps in the united states of america and you switch from ce mode to fcc mode it said something about the wlan and that the region has changed. Any tips on what to do after that?
This is one more great video tutorial! Congrats for the clear explanation! I'm a Mavic Air fan as well! Which brand of ND filter do u use? I'm browsing these filters to buy right now but I'm afraid to finally purchase some stuff which may disturb gimble performance. Thanks for all the knowledges, Jeff! And thanks in advance for the filters considerations.
Jardel Nascimento thank you sir i appreciate the thumbs up. I have both the polar pro (vivid cp) and a set from freewell. Both are good quality and have had 0 issues with the gimbal. The filter weight is negligible because you also take off the end of the lens on the mavic air in a 1:1 swap.
Jeff Greene tks! I'll keep following your excellent job!
I do the manual orbit all the time. I like to do is fly to the subject I want to orbit, right stick will be forward, then slowly roll right stick around to the left, at the same time give it right yaw. This is also good for learning how to transition from flying forward to flying sideways, while direction of flight says the same.
Richard Masci man that is so interesting, i would have never thought to do it like that. Thanks for the tip!
what about using spotlight mode to don't worry about camera or gimbal stuff while controling manualy the drone? is it easier or do not have the same result? Thanks!!!
It would be really nice if you could select your target like in other modes... Unless the target is something obvious like that tower I find it difficult to lock onto my targets... Thanks for sharing.
Good video.
Thank you!
Nice video
Great job! Can you tell me what editing software you use for the cross-hair effect at 6'54"? Thanks a lot!
Thanks Evan! This is a plugin from MotionVFX called "mCallouts Simple 2". I think they give you about 50 variations to choose from. They have been pretty helpful for me. here's a link: www.motionvfx.com/store,mcallouts-simple-2,p2101.html
I have to admit that I use the POI most of all but I do practice some. What I would like to see you do would be a Spot Light mode on something like a boat or ship if you have any of those animals in your area. I have plans to try that on a ship or boat as soon as I get a chance. Nice teaching techniques. Subscribed though I find that number of subscribers don't mean much. It's viewes that count.
Thanks Stan, i appreciate that. I do have some large boats nearby(barge tankers, car ferries). I just need to get in sync with their departure/arrival. Thanks for the comment!
Parrot must have heard you...Anafi has a mode like that, the cameraman. Check it out. On my channel you can find short demos with my dogs, my Spark and a tree. Though tree ist Shot with POI function.
Thank you!!
Nice work Jeff:>)
Thanks Sir!
Do you have to start the video before you enter this mode? I can get the POI locked, but after 'apply' and 'start I get no video. The record button greys out after I hit 'start', I assumed it was doing it automatically, but it appears not. Later: the new version of the app does not give access to the record button until 'hide' is pressed. So in addition to setting everything up it is essential to 'hide' the POI interface.
Thanks Jeff
Verg good video jeff
Thank you Nasir!
I am having a difficult time figuring out how to bring up the screen with the grids on it or how to even select a target for point of interest or any other auto flight mode. I tap on the screen, but nothing happens. Any ideas? I have the Mavic Air. Thanks
Thanks so much, Jeff. I have been flying without even knowing the existence of these modes. I would have loved to try out the poi mode today but unfortunately, my remote controller failed to link to the drone no matter how many times I tried it says connecting error
I have not had that happen yet, but i believe there is a procedure to go through to basically reset the connection back to factory defaults. Should check w/ DJI.
Try connect another cable to bottom of controller,IT worked for me.
thank you sir!
You are most welcome hot wax:)
The downside with trying to accomplish these on manual, (on my experience) is if you get video lag, even for a fraction of a second, if the aircraft is out of your sight, is hard to keep the course steady by looking at the live video feed, I think that if DJI does a quick update and display the % of all the axis when you push either the throttle, yaw and side axis, it will help find sweet spots for a particular motion or effect
Raleigh ❤️
Nice!
Thank you!
awesome vids and fantastic explanations! I can't find anyone else who explains this stuff as well as you do. Thanks for sharing
Thanks D Squared, i really appreciate you saying that. Happy New Year to you!
Great video Jeff. But it doesn’t automatically record right? You have to initiate the record button BEFORE you set up POI, right? When I set up POI and the screen pop comes up it says “record POI.” That is a little confusing because I think all it does is note the POI you have set up.you but doesn’t actually begin to record the video. And because the prompt covers up the record button, you don’t know where the recording or not. Is that right?
I never noticed that but yes you are 100% correct. "record poi" is only referencing the GPS location of the poi. With the exception of the QuickShots(dronie, rocket, etc), every other intelligent flight mode will require you to manually press the record button.
I wish the MA had a default optional setting for turning Record On or Off upon take off. I lost some incredible shots due to not hitting the record button...... Kicking myself afterwards. 🤬
Wow.... What an awesome tutorial!! I have a few questions about the POI mode; Do you have to select on something that's different from it's surroundings? I'd like to use this in the mountains but, since all the trees similar, could I just select one of the trees or does it have to be something that stands out? Thanks again for the great video..... I have learned so much from your videos!! Ray
Raymond Sherman thanks man, much appreciated! Nope, you can just start the poi on anything or nothing at all. In poi, the mavic is using gps coordinates. So, you should be good to go in the mtns. Just be mindful of your elevation (above all trees), since there are no side sensors. Happy flying!
You're Welcome....... One more question if I may; Do I need to use cellular data from my cellular plan for this mode or just the WiFi? Thanks for the great information......!! You're Awesome!! Ray
Raymond Sherman neither actually. I typically set my phone to airplane mode when i am flying. The gps is only between the sat's and the quad. The wireless is between the quad and the remote controller. The remote controller is a wired connection to your phone via usb. Make sense? So the only thing your phone is doing is running the app, not using cell service or data.
Awesome!! I wasn't sure about needing cellular with this particular mode. I'll be using an iPad with WiFi only. I do understand your explanation of the connection. It's great to know that I can use a POI on anything or nothing at all! I will definitely be mindful of my altitude in the mountains. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time in answering my questions...... Now I'm going to practice this mode before I hit the mountains. Can't thank you enough!! Ray😋👍
Raymond Sherman awesome sir!
Quick question. I know on the Phantoms it may be different but when you come down to land and your lets say 3 feet off the ground you pull the stick down and it lands and the props stop.
If you are at a 100 feet and pull the left stick all the way down the props wont stop will they?? Doesn't it sense if it is near the ground?? Sometimes I want to come down faster but am afraid to try it??
Yep no worries at all. It will just descend at max speed, which is only 5-8mph, or similar. Once it gets close to the ground it will pause as the obstacle avoidance sensors detect the ground. Nothing to worry about
Props only stop if you bring both sticks down simultaneously. The left only descends in altitude (default settings here).
Nice vide. BTW. Why you need ND8? It was too bright?
Thanks tikkypoland! yep, usually have a ND filter on most of the time.
Hi Jeff Greene, can I use Point of Interest Mode even in low altitudes ? For example, if I want to have a nice smooth circling shot around a human subject, all I need to do is hover the drone on top of the subject, and set the standard settings, and then just click apply and let it go by itself, will that be correct ?
Hi Isaac, POI mode is mainly used on an object that is not moving, like a building structure. For a moving target like a person, you would be better off using Active Track Mode. When you are in Active Track mode you can use the slider on the screen to make the mavic rotate around the subject in the same way as POI mode. Be very cautious in either mode at low altitude, as there are no side sensors. There are many pilots that have crashed into trees from the side in both modes. Keep that pause button close by. :)
@@JeffGreeneChannel Hi Jeff, thank you very much for the information, really help a great deal. Just another side question, do you always shoot in 4K or 2.7K ? As I know 2.7K is significantly smaller in size than the 4K, but what do you think ?
@@JeffGreeneChannel Hi Jeff, just a quick question, I tried Active Track Mode, and I was able to set the speed of how fast I want the drone to go. So I can also rotate the direction of the drone using the left stick, but for the right stick controls, that I can't control right ? I can only set the speed of the drone, as well as control the rotation using the left stick only ?
What brand of ND Filter did you use?
nice!
Thank you!
are you using cinematic mode then adding contrast in post?
Yep, on the mavic air i shoot in d-cinelike and then color correct in post. 👍
I drive by the mudcats everyday haha! great stuff
David Benson always wanted to fly around that for some reason .😀
Jeff Greene for sure! Great poi shot for sure! I'll have to take my new air there and try it! Have you been to the whirligig park in Wilson? I bet you could some amazing stuff there.
David Benson i actually did go there a while back. I was trying to do some long exposure shots, but it didn't work out. Started raining 😣 so ill have to try again soon.
Great job buddy!! I need an editing pc 😭😭😭😭
Thank you Charles! I use FCPX on a MacBook Pro, which works pretty well for me when I edit(4K) using proxy files(lower res). Then I convert it back to the original before the final export.
Jeff Greene that makes sense very nice. I am debating building my own editing pc for photos and video.
Show how to calibrate the horizon. I always want to tilt the monitor.
Another great video. What a shame the gimbal can’t be controlled by the app in the POI mode. Even changing the sensitivity doesn’t make it as smooth as I’d like it to be!!
no, you CAN control the gimbal in POI mode. You can control gimbal, altitude, radius, all while in POI mode. Beautiful thing.
Jeff Greene isn’t it a manual control though? So the pilot uses the wheel on the remote, and not use the quick shot POI mode to keep it smooth. That’s what I thought anyway!
oh i see what you mean, yes totally manual. I guess no big deal as long as you set the gimbal at the beginning. i think only active track will lock on like you are describing.
Instead of the tripod mode, using the cinematic mode works better for me. I live in a high wind velocity area (for the drone). Tripod mode sometimes gives jerks because the drone tries to keep the camera pretty stable and sturdy, but the wind is more than what the drone can handle so it tips off in one direction causing a really bad jerk. In cinematic mode however, if this happens, the jerk caused is compensated by smooth movement of the gimbal by the drone. Thus, the jerk looks more like a smooth movement than a bump. Unfortunately, there is no other way for me to do this. Manual orbits are insanely difficult here because the wind is unpredictable. At about 10 storeys high, the wind is so jerky that I had considered giving up on the drone. But the cinematic mode rescued me. It produces some decently acceptable footage even at pretty high winds. Once, I wanted to orbit left but the wind was so strong that even on full throttle to the left, the aircraft moved right. Because cinematic mode was enabled, the movement to the right was smooth (basically it slows down all the reaction timings of the drone thus creating smoother movement). So I filmed a right orbit instead and reverse played it in post.
P.S.: What are your thoughts about the cinematic mode?
Did you grade this ? I notice quite a bit of grainy on my mavic air even at iso 100
Hi agent00immpression, i do color grade a little bit. Try shooting in D-Cinelike, and changing your color style settings to (0,-3,-2). That should help a bit with the grain.
Is there any way to quit the POI mode very fast? As if you are almost going to crash in a tree or something.
Hit your panic button (the red button with the 2 little lines on it) that should stop whatever your doing
I have tried this and for some reason the video is not smooth I can see some stuttering while it is in that mode.
i recorded a video in circle mode and on playback the video sped up towards the end of the circle for an unknown reason.... anyone know why?
how come in the first example with the water tower the the camera was real jerky of the video was I don't think that was on my end but it may have been
Tom William yeah that was totally my fault. I cut out 5-10 secs at a time to speed things up and keep the vid shorter. Poor edit on my end 😕
Hi, I noticed a box on ur mobile, there was written TOWARDS POI...i cannot understand how it works...
Michele Angelino hi that is a good question. I went back out this morning to check. "Towards POI" does not seem to have any functionality.
how can I record in 4k ?
