The leather thing with all the hooks on it is part of a lace-up boot or a woman's like high top lace-up shoe.

I've definitely noticed more reckless people getting into metal detecting in the last 10 years, who don't care about history, don't care about the people whose stuff they're digging, and they saw a video or two of 'AMAZING TREASURE FOUND' on RUclips, and decided to get a detector and hunt. They leave their holes unfilled as well, which drives me nuts. I haul 100% of what I find out of the hunt site, and dispose of what needs to be disposed of responsibly. Brad is one of the good guys though, and whether he finds cool stuff or not, it's about the adventure and the history.

    • @ryanjourney9607
      @ryanjourney9607 4 года назад +6

muchomusiclibre I’ve seen it quite a bit lately. Not sure if it is because of COVID and people are home bored, so they pick up a detector. Like you said it seems to mostly be people hoping to get rich. Also lots of them begging for sites to detect. I just tell them that research is all part of the fun.

I remember my grandparents hanging old pictures and photo frames from a picture / dado rail, in the front room of their house, using very thin chains like the one you found. And I definitely think that the 'rivets' on a leather strip, were 'buttons' from a childs or a small womens boot, requiring a small hook to fasten.

Despite not finding coins, I think this was a great hunt Brad. So many amazing and unusual finds. Would love if you could make a follow up video to this, showing each item all cleaned and up close! I hope you go back to this property some day soon? Considering how many neat things you came across after it had already been detected multiple times, I should think there’s probably still a lot more to there to discover!

Hello Brad, i think the item before the last one; the leather with de 4 round "buttons" on it .this is I think to close your shoes . It is on both sides you pull the shoelace around at the end you make a bow. Little bit difficult to explain in English. My mountain shoes had such a closure .I am from 1946. The glas blue pot ,i recognise immediately as Vicks, we put the ointment below our nose when we had a cold .it was to make your nose and head brighter .i think there was eucalyptus in it .I am from holland

Around 17:30....I think that strip is maybe part of a "shoe-boot" ....you would criss-cross the shoe lace up the boot (a lady's boot", and then tie at the top....Even in the 1950's I remember having leather boots that laced up with those round, opened buttons...there are no lace holes..just the round "hooks" to feed the laces around. (LOL...yeah....I'm 71 but I am sure that they used these kinds of lacing hooks in the 1800's as well )

What you are calling the "crazy, intricate, button cover" is possibly the hook for a hook and eye fastener. It would have hooked into a piece that matched it, but that had the eye to receive the hook. Possibly to have closed the top of a lady's cape. It could also fasten a decorative belt in the same way.

I think that button with "the scene" may be a classic case of Pareidolia. When the brain perceives shapes or objects as having a human or animal form or face, similar to the leaves in the bottom center of the screen at 9:10 they looks like a skull or screaming face. I think the "man" in the button may have been a piece of wire wrapped around a pin, maybe to hold it onto that ornamental piece you found with the glob of iron on it? Definitely some sweet finds either way, the land without a doubt had a wealthy past! Keep up the good work! Your vids are one of the things I look forward to most about fridays!

I also saw the “Man in the Moon” for this button also. The site must have been detected before as the owner has said BUT you are the winner here. You found the items that tells the story of this family in the every day. This was wonderful. I hope you get to visit this site again. 😊

Boot laces. That leather thing with the metal attachments is for boot laces. Which makes total sense.

the intracate button looks like that little piece was folded over. grandma used vics on us when we had a cold or congestion at night for bed then we had to get it off in the morning cause she said it opened you up so youd get sick if you left it on lol. memories. since you had to leave early you should see about another visit there that was cool!

. .AT 5:10 . .it’s a cape or sweater clasp, it’s missing the chain element that connects to the other metal half of the one shown here . .(exquisite repousse’, raised design relief✔️)

My first thought with the button was it looked like the back of a firefighter, but I'm not sure firefighters wore big pants like that & a helmet back then. That chain could be for a monocle or spectacle as they used to hang from a little chain to keep them close by.

Those brass chains I believe were plated and used to hold cloaks and Shaws together. I have found a few at early sights and then noticed them in period drawings and paintings. To me it makes sense because cloaks were fashionable then and everyone in the family wore them over top of their winter coats. That's why you find so many different styles. IMO.

@@HokieJuju Thanks, you can type in 'Cloak Clasp with chain' and you can see one for sale on Etsy. Check it out. I also think that the buttons he and other people find would go on the ends. Like the button he found today that had the person on it.

Ohio Artifact Dude I just checked them out on Etsy. They are pretty neat & some are very decorative!!! It’s funny, we forget sometimes about things that we don’t use today & it’s cool going back and looking at stuff like that and finding stuff like that!!! Cloaks and shawls aren’t used for the most part these days so it’s not something normal in our minds. I love learning new stuff so thank u for the info and for the Etsy reference so I could see what some of them look like!!

@@HokieJuju You're welcome had to figure this one out about thirty years ago by finding them detecting then seeing a painting in a book somewhere. Google is awesome wish I had it then.

I just love your work. Great finds, great information you should be a teacher. Now when you find something I know what it is before you tell us and I know the names of these items. The best part is the music and when you take video of the places you are in between the finds. I could watch a whole video of just you walking through the woods show the wonders of nature. Thank you so much for sharing your journeys.

When you found the Vicks Vapour Rub Jar I could immediately smell the rub because my mother rubbed it on my chest 70 years ago when I had a cold after a Mustard Plaster. lol, they call that a smell memory.

The short chain, I believe, is a transom chain. Its about the right dimensions.

The number and size of finds you got tells me that the previous detectorists didn’t do a very good job. Great video!
