"He's been in my home", translates to, "he's been around my children". What a horrifying thing to realize, that this man, whom you consider a friend, is the *worst* kind of monster. Worse yet? He's been around *your* kids. I can't even imagine.

Matt Millen has nothing to apologize for. I've always respected him as a broadcaster, and now I respect him even more. His heart was truly broken for Sandusky's victims, and also for the damage done to coach Paterno and the Penn St program. He was honest, emotional, and truly horrified by the whole situation.

Can't believe it's been almost 10 years since this news first broke. I remember being out to eat somewhere in my hometown when the news broke and then going home & listening to the initial reports on ESPN & I was just in complete shock. I was at the last game Paterno coached (the snow game against Illinois) & even then I never saw this coming. I also was there when he won his 400th game. And in an instant. it seemed that none of it mattered anymore. I'm a VA Tech Hokies fan in an entire household of Penn State fans, so this was a notable, sad event for us as a CFB loving family.

Same too. I remember it well. I was my freshman year in high school and I could remember watching Dancing With the Stars with the family and I overheard my mom and older brother talking about an assistant coach at Penn State raping boys and I was like: “This can’t be Penn State?” And sure enough it was. The next when I was in intervention class with my brother and he was talking about it with the teacher who so happened to be my football coach and I talked about it with him and I said I thought it was a bunch of BS and the NCAA is like: “Now that we already bullied Ohio State long enough, who’s next on the list so that we can give Michigan a fighting chance at a national title let alone a Big 10 conference title?” Coach gave that are you kidding look and said “Do you know what that guy did? He should be shot” I didn’t know about the scandal well enough back then and looking back I feel very stupid for saying those remarks. And ever since the scandal, I’ve hated Penn State and every single thing about them to the core. Go Bucks

Matt Millen was obviously sickened and shocked by what Jerry Sandusky did. He was emotional. But his point was that even though it was an emotional issue, even for him, those emotions should not drive people to make other decisions. It was like when he said that part of him wanted to "take care of it" himself...he stepped back and said that doing so would be the wrong thing. Divorcing yourself of emotions when making decisions doesn't mean you can't have emotions. You just need to TEMPORARILY put those emotions aside and be rational.

I don't think Paterno was a monster or supported child sexual assault... but I cannot make an argument where he's not to blame in some way for enabling it to continue or not doing something to stop it. And it really is sad that many people in my state only want to argue about how Paterno is the victim here and shouldn't lose his god status when there is a list of abused kids who really are victims. Whatever we do, don't tear down a football deity by holding him accountable for his decisions or lack of action! He built a library!

@@Kevin-it4fh I think its one of those things where he probably did not want to believe it. Sandusky was a long time friend, etc. I know that I have at first rejected to believe certain things that seemed too impossible to be true before I finally accepted them. The difference is, the stuff that I had a hard time accepting was not on the level of child rape by a person that I was enabling, and secondly, I eventually accepted the truth. If one of my assistants reported what was reported to Paterno... "Well, I mentioned it once to somebody in charge and nothing came of it, so I did my part, now I'm just going to pretend it never happened" would not be good enough for me to absolve myself. It's a character test. At the end of the day, Joe Paterno is who had to live with this. I don't have to judge him, he judged himself. It obviously crushed him when the story broke. He probably wondered how football became so important that it wound up preventing him from doing the right thing. I doubt Joe Paterno would be okay with a statue honoring himself in light of what happened.

Sandusky is one hell of a manipulator. That man concealed his actions for years while being heavily involved with major organizations made up of thousands of people. I always see people talking online about Paterno like he was involved with Sandusky's actions... Paterno heard from McQueary about something he saw in the showers. He should have said to McQueary, "what did you do to stop the incident?" Maybe Paterno could be criticized for that, but the eyewitness is the most accountable here.

Gary Schultz was the head of Penn State Police. Paterno did think he was doing enough at the time by reporting up the chain, which is what he was supposed to do.
When nothing happened... MAYBE then he should have acted further--but I think the real burden was in his superior's hands. He was a figurehead, a face for Penn State, but in the end his colleagues likely thought the same about him-- in essence, a overly proud, dottering old fool.

You have to grow up in a nation of a football team and the pride of those programs to understand this. Joe Paterno was a an icon in college football and this program was so great but this kills all of that. I grew up in Nebraska and if Osborne or Devaney was involved in something like this it would be devastating. That being said the issues of Penn State were sick and God only knows how wide this was. Those behind that whole issue should be punished to the extent of the law and pray to God that he forgives them for they have a special place waiting if the word is true.

dont take this out of context........blaming paterno for all of this is like blaming ronald mcdonald because the hamburlar was a pedophile but the owners let the hamburlar hang around still, yes this sounds ludacris and im not saying it isnt but paterno was a coach and a familiar face, he did not run that place, he wasnt the president of penn state he brought the accusations to the people in charge and they dropped the ball. i know im going to get alot of stupid comments save them!!

@torontothegood feeling like He respected them as integrity-filled strong responsible men and they are no more that but he remembers them as being all that so is emotional. He looked very genuinely emotional--even struggling with eye contact with his co-worker eyes as a intervewee.

I doubt he would but I am guessing it is a completely different emotion to know that it wasn't a "total stranger" that commited such offenses and an actual friend.

the only person to blame is Sandusky...Paterno should have been allowed to finish the season...ya he could of done more but if theres someone other than Sandusky to blame then is McQueary he should have gone to the police after it happened regardless of what Paterno said to him...also did the parents of these kids have no idea? Were they watchin the news when they first found out about this? If you can go 10 years or more and not know your kid was molested then they share some of the blame

I know that joe should have done more, but it is wrong to keep taking shots at people who cant defend themselves now. He is the only person for sure who knew his reasonings and everyone is making assumptions based on hearsay. I do believe he should have done more, and it was wrong that he didn't, but he never really had a chance to defend himself. Everyone needs to stop focusing on him and help the victims/ prevent this horrible act from ever recurring.

I’m a Ohio State fan I have no issue with Matt Millen a very passionate man. Listen Joe was naive. He did tell his boss but should have done more. It upsets me that people treat Joe worse then the School President, The AD, Mike McQuary or Jerry Sandusky. The President & AD knew something happened. Worse McQuary walked in on a incident. Get the guy off the kid & scream for help so people come running, don’t give me I had to talk to my father about what to do. Now the big thing that few people understand Joe Pa wasn’t friendly when Sandusky they just worked on the same staff the misconception is they were friends no they weren’t ask anyone around that school.
Joe was the Head Coach he ran practices but Sandusky ran the defense & the meetings of that unit. If you know football the offense & defense watch separate film in separate rooms I guarantee you when Sandusky was running the defensive meetings Joe wasn’t there & would appear probably stick his head in the door saying “Coach game plan for the game going ok????”
This idea that Joe & Sandusky were such good friends & that was part of the cover up is ridiculous.

Friendly NU fan here and I can appreciate your comments. Friendly: You don't even have to be a HUGE sports fan to feel. This interview shows the hard of a 48ish year old man feeling like his entire "grade" of school respected him. I mean, Bawstin I see you putting that you saw this guy as a "God" but I imagine all it would take is for someone like Matt to know that he respected his former "boss." I would imagine that it is alot less than a God level or I have a "god" like respect for former

I feel bad for victim one b/c of how his family treated him, and his dad was never there, that is why he was happy, he was getting presents, when Jerry stopped getting him gifts and mom money they told police the rape story and his mom started bragging. THAT IS SICK. I hope one day that gets out and his mom goes to jail. JERRY WAS GUILTY SO IT IS FINE HE IS BEHIND BARS SO IT IS WAY BETTER NOW. I feel bad for all the other victims and I hate that he did that to those poor kids.

On Sept. 18, 2005, the cocaine and vodka lost their ability to soothe Fleury’s pain. He cracked. He crumbled.
"I finally had a conversation with the Big Guy Upstairs and I called Him every name in the book," Fleury said. "I told Him, 'I know the whole You-only-give-me-as-much-as-I-can-handle thing. Well, I'm full. I need you to take a little.' At the end of the conversation, I prayed for Him to take away the obsession. ..

I can imagine if I saw him doing it to my nephew. That is what amazed me about how non reactive McQueary was and then I listened to McQueary talk on interviews about feelings such shock about what happened and I realized it isn't like McQuery "walked into a grocery store and saw ....... and reacted. People who put "what if he had saw a kid being violated in the real world etc do you realize that he had a human connection to that person so it isn't like he just "saw something randomly?"

True. I agree with you about that. What bugs me most isn't that every senior now had a horrid year it is that they are doing (like all college students on campus' everywhere doing good things and of course media makes no attention there and then this happens and non-stop attention and while I agree with that I think about how many things that school is known for that get zero media and they will forever be known for that. Jokes aren't funny!! AT ALL.

@GodRoseares should have said something. Im not seeing any justice again just one mans word against another mans word. And even if he knew he followed protocal, If anyone should be leaving here are the 3. The President of the University, The man who witnessed the act and didn't do anything, and The man who committed the crimes. This is using a very delicate issue and with misunderstandings others have created has caused large turmoil and the loss of a college football legend. A truly sad day.

Yes because that's a proper reaction when clearly everyone at Penn State had so much to do with the scandal. In case you can't register sarcasm since you can't seem to register logic, the students and teachers had nothing to do with what happened. A lot of the students weren't even alive or knowledgable enough to know what was going on.

That is what I am talking about. People say sports isn't important but there are so many layers to this that have nothing to do with sports-that is what I have always said. This is so much more about Millen thnking he had Paterno et al figured out and that dissolving into a trivial mess than anything else. :( I am imagining it being agonizing at best. Our former football player is married and I believe has 20 something kids.
