- CLIFF, conceived by one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, Janet Laurence, was commissioned by Curtin University for the School of Design and the Built Environment.
Laurence’s installation of Western Australian geological specimens is a presentation of, in Janet’s words, “the matter of nature”, telling a story of deep time. Imagining the new School of Design and the Built Environment as a wunderkammer (a cabinet of curiosity), the specimens appear as presentations within a natural history museum, removed from display cases and displayed like precious jewels.
The new facility for Curtin’s School of Design and the Built Environment (DBE) is a landmark building for Curtin University’s Perth campus, sitting at the heart of the University’s dedicated innovation precinct.
The artwork joins the impressive public art collection, cared for by the John Curtin Gallery.
The project commenced in 2019 with finishing touches in 2024, working with incredible teams at Event Engineering and Safe Passage, Lendlease and Wardle on the most creative installation we’ve been party to.
Thanks to Andrijich Muntz Productions for the beautiful vision.
