I think it’s very interesting and important to Hisoka’s character that in this scene we see him a little shaken up at the fact that he will probably die. In his fight scenes, he seems absolutely fearless and willing to sacrifice everything (including BOTH HIS ARMS 😦). We all know that Hisoka likes death matches. He likes to fight with his life on the line, that’s part of the excitement. In THIS scenario, though, he is put in a situation where he potentially loses his life without even having the chance to fight back. He would essentially be losing control and be stripped of his power, which is his driving force. I think it was very purposeful that we actually got to see some of Hisoka’s weaknesses in the arc
Hisoka views himself as unbeatable, which is why he'll gladly wager his life. He wants his opponents at their strongest, and relishes killing the strongest among them. In this scenario, he thinks his life is at risk for the first time, since he doesn't think his life is ever in jeopardy against his opponents.
