I don't think us gamers on RUclips understand how much of this business is people buying, Mario Kart, Call of Duty, Madden, FIFA/FC, and GTA. Most of the video game consumers, whose purchasing habits exasperate the problems the industry faces, are completely oblivious to fact that there is a problem. Why? Because the mainstream media, without fail, will pretend this industry does not exist, and they only rediscover the industry when they have a story they can use to cast shade on it and everyone who enjoys the medium. The movie and music business, who make less money COMBINED than the games industry, will forever and always be beloved and get more attention than our corner of the entertainment world. That's just how it works, and it ensures the number of people that realizes this industry is imploding is niche, at best.
But will console be needed in the future with the rise of smartphones. Handheld pc . Cloud gaming even pc get huge rise in asia is there a future for a traditional console?
Nail on the head there mate, I got a PS5 Pro, yes I was one of those, but I was patient and waited to get a disk drive and refused to buy my games again, ironic I can buy a physical game, tangibly have the game in my hand, on my display case, borrow it to a friend etc and I get them usually a day or two early, sometimes 3 days early, with a minimum of £10 saved, at minimum, I know I would need an update but the worst comes to the worst I can still play them in whatever shaped they shipped even if the licence is taken away by a megacorp, my prediction is there will come a point in the near future, if we get that far, where an AI will make a pass and update all our older games to 'reflect a modern audience', dark days ahead folks but they will get brighter if we hold the line.
It will be a sad day when us gamers lose designated gaming hardware. What would that look like? I can only think of streaming... and I have 0 desire to stream video games. Latency, lower visual fidelity, reliance on corporations to have a stable infrastructure, and internet connectivity. It just sounds awful
I don't see consoles going away or streamed video gaming being the norm. Internet infrastructures, speed, latency, stability & company reliability on streaming service maintenance is still crap. But time will tell.
@Moli05 Ubiquitous internet will never be a thing. There are too many areas that have limited internet quality due to the regions they live in. They'll abandon millions of gamers. Which as we have seen, isn't a problem to executives

27:44 I agree to a certain degree with Shawn. PS1 to PS2 was mind-blowing! PS2 to PS3 was incredible! PS3 to PS4 was good. We have peaked with PS5 unless a new innovation of gaming comes along
They said consoles were dying when the N64 came out. They have been saying that for 30 years. Eventually maybe it will happen but if you say it every day for all eternity then you will be right Eventually.
The former chairman is actually speaking facts ngl. These newer games are so expensive but yet so horrible. I miss when video games were actually fun and you got your moneys worth.
Game consoles as we know it - a system that connects to a large display and can be controlled remotely for entertainment - will always be around as long as humanity exists. It is very core and central part of our culture as a civilization now. Nothing like handhelds, VR, smart glasses, projectors etc. can replace this!
the title forgot to mention "in 30 years" at that time every games will be on cloud that you can play on everything that had display no need for dedicated hardware anymore
31:35 that's exactly why exclusivity deals are s#!t let ppl choose where they want to play their games on. Consoles will always have a place in the consumer market.
I'm LOVING the sound effects when you choose one of the themes. It's such a bummer that it's going away. It could be a marketing thing too, they wanna stick with the ps5 theme.
The ps1 boot up sound must say ❤ brang back childhood memories of turning on my ps1 to play gran turismo an doom , tekken ect. They was the days ..mad to think It was 29 yrs ago since I was that kid playing the ps1 ..AHH the good days
30:00 I can see in 30 years that if Sony or Nintendo doesn't do a console they'll make their own PC app that you pay a subscription too that will allow you to download and stream their games on pc and it has to be played through their app.Kind of how the Xbox app is atm.
No console days are not limited. A lot of people prefer the easy of use. They cant maximize their money, if they dont make good games instead of expensive shit games
I'm not some rich insider executive, but from a consumer level that comment sounds asinine. I just can't see a world where there are no consoles. I strongly believe that for as long as video games exist, there will be a high demand for console hardware.
He does know what he is talking about. The industry has grown a lot which means spending has also increased over the years. However, the console sales have been the same since the early 2000s, perhaps it will be even lower this generation. There has been zero growth and that is unsustainable. On the software side it's also going badly. AAA games barely sell anymore, the only exception was Wukong because of the Chinese market. The best games of the year (FF7 Rebirth and Astro Bot) probably only sold 2 million each by now which is way too low for a console with over 65 million user base. If it wasn't for microtransaction money flowing through their digital stores, Playstation and Xbox would have drown by now.
@@Manic_Panic Granted, Layden doesn't know what he's talking about but that's because he's the one that pushed for PS on PC. Expecting massive growth is precisely the problem. The market has a cap. Sony would have done better to accept their lot. If spending has increased over the years, and AAA games don't sell, make less AAA games. What Sony should have learned was to reign in the scope of their projects and not try to make everything the equivalent of a Blockbuster cinema release. At the same time, you can still have AAA games with reduced scope. Look at something like RE2 Remake. That game can be gone through in a couple of hours by the average player; it essentially has 4 main locations, and was a massive success (admittedly due to franchise recognition on top). You're absolutely right that microtransaction money and in essence, PSN revenue is their main money maker. So they should probably try to drag people to PlayStation to soend on PSN and not port to PC where PSN or a Sony Launcher will never fly... They've shot themselves in the foot by convincing millions to now never go anywhere near PS, and anyone that was PC/PS5 to never buy a PS6. Layden is a key component of that idiocy.
I still think that the ps3's xmb was one of the best console UIs. You had your big tabs horizontally, then your categories vertically, and subcategories nested.
Shaun layden is very smart and predicted the difficulty of ballooning development costs and the risk of failing into the multiplayer space with high budgets he is always important to listen to! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
The big seller for me on that handheld will be if I can display its screen on a tv and connect controllers to it for a home console-style experience, complete with the same music and movie/tv functions. If this handheld will be able to do all that, basically being a “PS Switch,” I’d stop buying traditional tv-only consoles and just use that.
don't take this the wrong way but you are my go to guy if i have trouble sleeping, ten mins in and i'm in the land of nod, it's something about your voice
The new handheld that they are developing sounds great, except for one thing: Most of my games (like the 90%) are physical. Unless they are also developing a feature like, idk, letting the disc inside of your console so you'll be allowed to access the digital version of that game, it's not for people like me.
I can’t see consoles disappearing anytime soon there was a time during the early 2000s that people thought PC gaming was dying and now it’s more popular than ever.
@Canadian_duck31 and pc is becoming more like pc. The steamdeck is a perfect example, a pc like console experience with all the exclusives and supported for years. Valve are also reportedly working on a new steam console and working with linux developers to make it even more accessible. I dont even own a steamdeck. I have a console but if we don't point out these facts then it'll just move past you
@DalazG That may be true but a Steam deck is still a pc just on a handheld much like how a Nintendo switch is a handheld but a console. All these machines can exist and they will just be another way to play I can’t see any of them going anyway anytime soon. If they do end up going away well it was a fun ride while it happened.
Why isn't the conversation ever, "PCs won't be around in 30 years" and is always "Consoles are going away" when more people play consoles than on PC? Makes no sense.
I absolutely miss the days of Shaun Layden and is absolutely SPOT ON with what he said. At least HE gave a crap about nostalgia and backwards compatibility and Sony should read the room so to speak. Jim Ryan and whoever is in charge now wouldn't know anything about nostalgia if it jumped up and sat on them. And to think that Jim Ryan said 'we believe in generations'. What a load of garbage considering HE was the one that said 'oh who wants to play old games on a next gen console'. And I REALLY do hope that Sony listens (pipe dream) and actually give us these 30th Anniversary themes for free and be a permanent thing. WHAT sense does it make to update the console with these things, only to take them away after a month? IT'S RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????
Backward compatibility does not sell. I am sure Microsoft did research on this and found that only 1% of people constantly use backwards compatibility. People in the comments complaining about "old Sony" are a minority. Most people do not care about the past when it comes to video games. The top games are GTA V, Madden, Call of Duty, and Mario Kart. Not very many people care about Um Jammer Lammy. Millions of people remember and love that game, but many more millions have not even heard of it.
@@laurenriley2943 People in the comments are a minority? Look around and read the room There are PLENTY of people that DO care about games preservation, nostalgia and backwards compatibility. Just because you don't, that doesn't automatically mean that other people don't or shouldn't. Because what happens in the future when you want to play those old games you used to know and love but said console doesn't have backwards compatibility? You can't and won't be able to and are pretty much SOL, UNLESS we all make a voice now and fight for it. Don't be like Jim Ryan who was quote as saying 'oh who wants to play an old game on a next gen console'. Backwards compatibility by itself may not sell, but you know what will sell? Consoles that have that feature. That's just fact. Don't be a Jim Ryan and a Sony.
@@jordanking7711 The Xbox is the most backward compatible system on the market, and it is doing worse than the Xbox One. It has barely reached N64 numbers. Your facts are incorrect. Consoles with backwards compatibility do not sell. The switch is the least backward compatible system on the market, and it has sold almost as much as the PS2. I did not say I did not care about old software. I am saying that the majority of people playing games these days do not care. As I said before. Millions of people care about BC, but there are several million more that do not. 'Read the room," PlayStation's profits are the strongest that they have ever been, and that is without wasting resources on BC. Would it be awesome if PS3 was emulated? Yes. Does it financially make sense? No. Why give people give BC when you can get people to pay for games over again. Nintendo does it all the time.
@@laurenriley2943 Okay, so if backwards compatibility on consoles don't sell, then other than next/current gen games, WHY do you think that people buy these consoles (in the case of XBox in this case)? Because amongst other things, they want to be able to play all their OLD games from the past (again in the case of XBox which is backwards compatible with almost every generation before it). No offence intended, but your argument of 'backwards compatibility doesn't sell', is incorrect. It CLEARLY does sell regardless of what the research says. Companies (in this case Sony) need to start catering to their customers and what THEY want and not solely their back pockets and shareholders. Because if you asked anyone that was around since the PS1, they will tell you that is the ONE thing they want in their console. FULL backwards compatibility (and not just backwards compatible with the PS4). Because the reality is people are purists, and cherish games preservation. Like I said in my previous comment, just because you don't that doesn't mean that others shouldn't.
@@jordanking7711 You are missing my point entirely. I never said that no one cared about BC. I said that millions of people do. The demographics outside of those who who grew up with older titles do not really care that much. 2.8 billion people play games on smart phones. 1.8 billion people play games on PC. Only 30 million Xbox Series consoles have been sold. That is only as much as the N64. Sony's is not going to make that much more money doing BC for its consoles. I am sure Sly cooper and Jak and Daxter will sell well when they are released this month digitally. Sony is wise to focus on PC and mobile because more people are on those platforms. The US Copyright Office voted against game preservation for titles out of print. Why? because not enough people care about old games for them to be protected. When you have billions of people who care about older games, then you can say companies need to "read the room." If all you have is 30 million people who care, then that is not going to be enough. Do not respond
I like they added that boot up sequence. It would have been nice if they added the option of more. The best boot up sequences were from PS1, PS2 and launch PS3. Later PS3 updates took away the epic boot up screen and added horrible health warning screen . Remember when the boot up screens made you feel like you were about to experience something special? Now they just try to tell you, "Don't play this or you might get health problems". What kind of ridiculous messaging is that? Let us turn off those stupid health warnings!
Crazy as it sounds the only generation I missed out on completely was the PlayStation 2 generation because it came out around the end of my high school career. During that time, my parents had already started to cut the umbilical cord of buying me the new consoles when they came out! But now that I’m an adult and can buy my own consoles I still haven’t bought a PlayStation 2…! Even though I currently own a PlayStation 1 mini, a fat boy PlayStation 3, a standard edition, PlayStation 4, and now the PlayStation 5 Pro. But still no PlayStation 2 in my life… 🤣😂🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️ So for the 30th anniversary themes, I’m going with the PlayStation 2 theme since I never really got to enjoy it at all!!! 😂💯💪🏾
Shawn Layton is correct. With the direction they're going, i don't see how it could exist. 1. All exclusives now go to pc 2. They charge for online and cloud saves making the console less accessible 3. Pc gets both Xbox and Playstation exclusives plus pc 4. Even steamdeck, which is less powerful than ps4 gets ports of ps5 games that are optimized and it is supported for years So they'll probably both be competing for 70% revenue on pc and struggling to sell the console in the next generation It is likely that Nintendo will probably be the only console left since they keep exclusives
I wonder if the real biggest threat to console's future is the Steam Deck. Not that the Deck itself will overtake consoles, but that it will pave the way for more neatly packaged pc's with console-like operating systems.
I think Xbox consoles days are numbered. To suggest Nintendo and Sony will stop making consoles is dumb. The profit and fan base is far too massive for that to happen.
you think xbox days are numbered yet phil has spoken about making new consoles while playstation talk about the ps5 having a ten year life cycle yeah ok buddy
Love the new 30th backgrounds. PS2 is my favorite. Even though I’ve always has a pc the console systems are my favorite. At one point in the early 2000s tried to go pc only & couldn’t take the persistent annoyance of getting games to play. Plus the temptation to always want the better part, usually a graphics card. With the console it’s just easy. So the pc is for everything but games.
So many xbox fanboys clinging to that Layden interview, hoping that consoles die, just so they can make themselves feel better over the death of xbox. Sorry to break it to you but it's not happening. Streaming and cloud aren't gonna replace a plug and play device. And PC certainly isn't going to become as mainstream as cobsoles.
Agreed for the first part of your comment, however i can already imagine PC’s as the mainstream for literally everything. All in one place, with just the right adaptation and adjusted elements and infinite possibilities of customization, there’s already an world existing out there.
I think GoWR is a perfect example of one of these "four walls and a roof" cathedrals. Even some of the devs thought so, too, stating that they were worried it wasn't good enough,. Sony is making content following a formula with an emphasis on "low risk" and improving DEI scores. Sorry to say it, but this formula might appeal to investors, but it doesn't make good games.
Screw Bloodborne I want Killzone back. Could you imagine a Killzone Collection on PS5 running at 4K/120FPS I'd lose my shit and would totally buy that immediately.
Its easy to say dial back costs even though gamers have quality expectations. Even worse, there are gamers that believe they should get that level of quality on a budget subscription (ie. Gamepass).

Good for you. I don’t play as much now in my 3rd year of owning the ps5 as I did in my 1st, but my oh my does it go a long way in bringing me joy when I need it. Can’t imagine not having it.
Good to hear. Hope the difficulties are behind you now.
Are u the dude from Reddit? I saw a similar story from a dude that had to sell his PS5 to make rent. Regardless, glad you’re back!
YAAAAS QUEEN
I love consoles because I can also love my disc drive. I can watch my 4k movies and game all in one place.
what year is this!?
@@FiniteRich who cares movies on blu-rays still looks far faaar superior to any streaming service out there
I don't think us gamers on RUclips understand how much of this business is people buying, Mario Kart, Call of Duty, Madden, FIFA/FC, and GTA.
Get your physical games while you STILL can!
Prior generations I agree, current and future generations its a losing battle .. swimming against the current a waste of time, money and energy
Just brought MARVEL VS CAPCOM 2 on PS5/4 physical it’s yours forever
Adding hand gestures casually on the psvr2 is absolutely wild and awesome🤯
Wait, what?
I just speed ran 4 episodes of LTPS! You are forever the best PlayStation news Ryan! Your passions shows! Thank you 🙏
It will be a sad day when us gamers lose designated gaming hardware.
What would that look like? I can only think of streaming... and I have 0 desire to stream video games. Latency, lower visual fidelity, reliance on corporations to have a stable infrastructure, and internet connectivity. It just sounds awful
when that day comes it'll mean that our internet will be good enough everywhere
I don't see consoles going away or streamed video gaming being the norm. Internet infrastructures, speed, latency, stability & company reliability on streaming service maintenance is still crap. But time will tell.
If consoles end up going extinct, everything will probably just move to PC
@Moli05 Ubiquitous internet will never be a thing. There are too many areas that have limited internet quality due to the regions they live in. They'll abandon millions of gamers. Which as we have seen, isn't a problem to executives
Your lord and savior spoke, pony!! Listen to his warning.
My god they better keep these retro themes I never thought how happy I’d be turning off my ps5 seeing ps1 boot up with my ps2 theme.
Weird to throw out spoilers for a Gran Turismo trial, but I swear this is important.
Completing My First Gran Turismo, which takes no time at all, rewards you with a save data transfer with all 18 cars in the game available as free tickets in GT7
Thanks for this!
27:44 I agree to a certain degree with Shawn. PS1 to PS2 was mind-blowing! PS2 to PS3 was incredible! PS3 to PS4 was good. We have peaked with PS5 unless a new innovation of gaming comes along
Maybe Pixar and ILM sorta graphics...
Congrats on 800k Ryan!🙏🏼🙏🏼
These classic themes should be available as standard. Especially the boot up screen.
They said consoles were dying when the N64 came out. They have been saying that for 30 years. Eventually maybe it will happen but if you say it every day for all eternity then you will be right Eventually.
Consoles will always be needed. Most people don't need a computer as phones are now the new application for basic use.
The former chairman is actually speaking facts ngl. These newer games are so expensive but yet so horrible. I miss when video games were actually fun and you got your moneys worth.
These new themes are so cool, I wish they'd let us keep them.
Hopefully they'll consider adding PS2, 3, and 4 start up screens. Hearing the classic violin PS3 boot up would give me goosebumps every single time.
Please Sony, make this an option forever!
Fun fact: the sound you hear when you see a PS1 logo was actually recorded from a unicorn sneezing In a cave
I knew immediately that Ryan would choose the ps3 background and that he would love it.
Switch has sold 140M, ps5 60M and both still selling… but console days are numbered…? 🤦♂️
The ps1 boot up sound must say ❤ brang back childhood memories of turning on my ps1 to play gran turismo an doom , tekken ect. They was the days ..mad to think It was 29 yrs ago since I was that kid playing the ps1 ..AHH the good days
Same here, it was either Resident Evil or StreetFighter Alpha for me. 😂😂
Yeah some PC players are delusional thinking people are going to drop insane money on a system
I'm not some rich insider executive, but from a consumer level that comment sounds asinine. I just can't see a world where there are no consoles. I strongly believe that for as long as video games exist, there will be a high demand for console hardware.
Get ready to not be gaming anymore
@blackraven85_1 We love your negativity. Keep going
Shawn Layden's input doesn't matter much when he works for an NFT company now, he doesn't know what he's talking about
What nft company is he working for ? When did he enter into crypto ?
Cus you know more 😂.
The cope is strong with you.
I still think that the ps3's xmb was one of the best console UIs. You had your big tabs horizontally, then your categories vertically, and subcategories nested.
This week was so good got so much nostalgia with new edition coming out another great episode keep them coming 🎉
Love the PS2 UI sounds and dark blue theme♥️
Hope there will be a way to keep it
Shaun layden is very smart and predicted the difficulty of ballooning development costs and the risk of failing into the multiplayer space with high budgets he is always important to listen to! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
he's so smart he got escorted out of the business he made so successful then went to work for tencent
I'm loving the PS2 background really wish we could get the boot ups for whatever one we pick though o well.
Playstation VR2 Hand tracking demo looks cool!
don't take this the wrong way but you are my go to guy if i have trouble sleeping, ten mins in and i'm in the land of nod, it's something about your voice
Secret Level going exactly as I predicted. Just an IP/brand ad, except ads are usually supposed to be shorter
In 20-30 years the KFC console will be dominant
Just as in the Great Food War that saw Taco Bell win everything. KFC will win the Console War.
The difference is, people still needed a pc and they became more important. And sony now brings all their exclusives to pc
@@DalazG There are still people who prefer to play on console just like there’s people who prefer to play on pc.
How can console's days be numbered when I am still here wanting to give them money?
Depends on the pricing tbh. If the PS6 cost as much as the PS5 pro (or more) then you might as well just get a PC at that point.
I’d rather stick with the PS6, don’t care what the price will be when it comes out I’m getting it anyway.
@@Akumaa2000 Even if it cost 1000+ ?
@@thelonesomedrifter5884I’m not buying a freaking PC!!!
I’ll never buy a pc for gaming. I’m on one all day for work, I just want to push that PS button on my controller and chill on the couch.
Why isn't the conversation ever, "PCs won't be around in 30 years" and is always "Consoles are going away" when more people play consoles than on PC? Makes no sense.
It’s keyboard warriors
A glorified PlayStation commercial is exactly what the 30th anniversary video was, that sounds awesome.
Finally feels like a Friday 😁
But still no PlayStation 2 in my life… 🤣😂🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
So for the 30th anniversary themes, I’m going with the PlayStation 2 theme since I never really got to enjoy it at all!!! 😂💯💪🏾
I've been console gaming since 1984, I've been hearing that consoles days are numbered for decades now.
I love all 5 systems, but PS3 theme here y’all, how about everyone else?!
I change it every day.
You know the thing i dont see anyone talking about with streaming is the GB/hour. 7-10gbs per hour adds up real quick when youre on a 1k gb data plan
You're way too positive about Sony. I was Sony to death but even I know when we are getting fffed out the A.
My guess is, it was the headache we faced transferring from PS5 to the PRO that prompt the update into the first place. My systems crashed.
Good to see Stellar Blade finally getting some respect as a game.
Hilariously unimaginative game.
I'm ready to add je ne sais quoi to Ryan's set of regular expressions
Shawn Layton is correct. With the direction they're going, i don't see how it could exist.
1. All exclusives now go to pc
2. They charge for online and cloud saves making the console less accessible
3. Pc gets both Xbox and Playstation exclusives plus pc
4. Even steamdeck, which is less powerful than ps4 gets ports of ps5 games that are optimized and it is supported for years
So they'll probably both be competing for 70% revenue on pc and struggling to sell the console in the next generation
It is likely that Nintendo will probably be the only console left since they keep exclusives
congrats on 800K
It would be real great if they kept the themes and maybe made them dynamic and allowed colour options.
The profit and fan base is far too massive for that to happen.
you think xbox days are numbered yet phil has spoken about making new consoles while playstation talk about the ps5 having a ten year life cycle
yeah ok buddy
Console days are numbered (as we know them to be) I think is a very accurate statement
They really need to keep the themes. Even the noises from the older consoles. I'm getting really nostalgic about the noises
Also, whichever playstation era theme you have set, when you start your ps5 back up it will make that intro sound & visual:)
My favourite gaming channel 🙌🙌🙌
i never see it, lol... by the time my monitor detects the ps5 and turns on, the new loading screen intro already played
I‘m really early :D Pls I want to keep these backgrounds

I prefer to have a console over handheld consoles. I am willing every generation to buy the new consoles
I can’t do phone like consoles or pc
I think GoWR is a perfect example of one of these "four walls and a roof" cathedrals.
Even some of the devs thought so, too, stating that they were worried it wasn't good enough,.
Sony is making content following a formula with an emphasis on "low risk" and improving DEI scores.
Sorry to say it, but this formula might appeal to investors, but it doesn't make good games.
I want to keep the PS1 startup permanently
Does anyone know what game is shown at 26:41 with the white dog/wolf?
Neva, just came out. From the makers of Gris
@@dapperfan44 Okay thanks for letting me know.
Will taking the console offline stop the 30th anniversary themes from going away? I would love to play offline on the Pro.
Screw Bloodborne I want Killzone back. Could you imagine a Killzone Collection on PS5 running at 4K/120FPS I'd lose my shit and would totally buy that immediately.
Infamous for me.
And I, unironically, think Knack deserves another chance. Let team Asobi try again.
Talking about whether consoles will be a thing in 30 years, will we as a human race be a thing?
Its easy to say dial back costs even though gamers have quality expectations. Even worse, there are gamers that believe they should get that level of quality on a budget subscription (ie. Gamepass).
XMB is an experience.🌌
For those two game of the year awards, does seem like there may have been some biases due to where these games were developed.
I find it very interesting they give us themes i remember seeing comments on Twitter "saying themes aren't needed Or it won't work On PS5 " welp that has been disprove many times even by the company
When i saw this I was like omg I went to the settings and I of course immediately chose the PlayStation 3 theme and I love to hear those clicking noises and just overall the background it really feels like I am playing on the PlayStation three and the PlayStation three is my favourite console generation and that’s why I of course choose that one
Sony should of done. A ridge racer remake for 30th anniversary, cos this was one of the games that established the playstation brand .
