The depiction of Geidi Prime was a monumental triumph of cinematography. The greyscale was otherworldly, spooky and alien, saved massively on set design costs, and adeptly sent the message that Harkonnen culture is rigidly black and white

Dune Messiah was a failure of a book compared to Dune the original book. It is the deconstruction of Paul the hero and very political and boring. Very little action. So, if you're into tragedy films, this will take the cake. If this is Dune part 3 I will pass. With Chani riding off at the end, it sure looks like it is setting up for that. He really showed why Feyd was Paul's greatest rival in the movie. This version of Feyd is more powerful because he actually is a very capable warrior unlike the book and previous adaptation versions who likes to use trickery to win his fights. I've read the book. These movies are good (at least, from what I can see from Part 2's trailer and info), bordering on great, but they miss on a few points from the books.
Part of the point of Jessica giving birth while with the Fremen was because her daughter, Alia, is a key figure in the final act of the book and in future books. Because of the psychic and drug-fueled trial Jessica has to go through to become a Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit, Alia also gains heightened awareness and consciousness _while inside the womb._ Alia is basically born with the wisdom and intelligence and powers of a Reverend Mother but without any of the disciplines or loyalties (in the book, she's the one who kills the Baron because he underestimates her, since she's 2 years old, and lets her get close enough to stab him with a gom jabbar needle she'd been hiding).
In part one, the biggest disappointment was the gender-swap and race-swap of Liet Kynes. In the book, Liet Kynes is a male Imperial Ecologist who was chosen by the Emperor personally to learn about Arrakis and the Fremen. Long story short, Kynes goes full Dances with Wolves and gets adopted into the Fremen, even starting a family (Chani is his daughter, making her half-Imperial in the books). He's later so impressed by the honor and integrity of Duke Leto Atreides, partially thanks to the values he gained by spending so much time with the Fremen, that he actually betrays the Emperor and helps the Atreides royal family (most of them) escape. As an Imperial, and as the Imperial Ecologist and Emperor's contact, he's not killed by the Harkonnen. However, after he's captured he's left in the desert with a ruined stillsuit as punishment for his betrayal so they can say they "never killed" the Imperial Ecologist.
Kynes' life in the book has beautiful poetic symmetry: he starts out as an Imperial agent to be used to exploit the Fremen, but instead he learns their ways to survive the desert and becomes a man of greater integrity as he falls in love with the Fremen and Arrakis. Later, he sides with Leto against the Emperor, showcasing the Emperor's fears of Leto having the potential to gain enough influence to usurp him (if Leto could convince his _chosen man_ on the planet, an Imperial man, he could convince anyone to come to his side). Then, Kynes sacrifices himself to do what is right, and the people he started out serving in the first place leave him to die in the desert he was sent to study as an insult to him, but in actuality he's at peace with it since he'd long since come to love the place and now gets to be one with it.
They removed nearly all that poetry for a cheap girl-boss moment, and it will never not annoy me.

Dune was slightly 'lucky' in this way- Herbert's original books had women being just as strong as men in their own way (the Bene Gesserit, female Fremen warriors). Because he wrote it with some gender balance in it, there was less 'need' to insert intersectional ideas.
You CAN see some of Villeneuve's nods to more current sensibilities:
    1) making female characters have more agency/ability (the new Jessica kills with her hands, Dune '84 she didn't)
    2) Changes like Dr Kines' race/gender make little difference to the plot because it doesn't become the focus, or even get a mention (you wouldn't know the character has been gender swapped if you hadn't read the book or seen Dune '84)

I haven't watched Dune 2 yet, but from the first movie, it feels like they did the Sarduakar dirty and that may be why the Fremen seem overpowered. They definitely seemed weaker than how they were depicted in the Lynch version - the only real improvement in this version is that they drilled home the fanaticism but they left out the brutal competency and diehard toughness of the Sardaukar. Lynch captured that in a weird way - there's a scene where Duncan shoots a Sardaukar in the chest, the dude goes down, then gets right back up and wrestles with Duncan until he gets a dagger jammed right through his head. The book Fremen are supposed to be roughly equal to the Sardaukar, just more numerous and a surprise to the Sardaukar because they are so much better than the ordinary Great House soldiers (per the book one Sardaukar is generally considered equal to 10 Great House soldiers).

I noticed in the first movie that all the other Fremen had an accent but her; in this one they even explicitly mention Fremen accents (Stilgar had a southern Fremen accent) while Chani was there, ignoring her Californian accent. You are being paid to be a professional actress, I'd think that a professional actress ought to be able to handle an accent.
You are right about Javier Barden as Stilgar stealing the show. He completely makes the Fremen for me. I'd add that I loved what they did with Josh Brolins Gurney so much that I wish they had introduced him way sooner. In 1984 Dune he went native just like Paul and Lady Jessica and was a pretty generic honorable warrior character. In this he never gets the blue eyes and acts a bit like the devil on Paul's shoulder, seeing the Fremen as just a means to avenging house Atreides. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say more, but if they were already going to change some things from the books why not bring Gurney in sooner too?

Ive read both dune and lotr and if you’re interested il share my opinion on which is better. Lotr translates better to film, those movies are aging almost immaculately because of that and also mostly because they are extremely well produced.
But its not a fair comparison. The dune books aren’t typical fantasy like lotr, they are philosophical and ambiguous. Lotr focuses more on fantasy elements. It is better written and a more entertaining read but the ideas presented in dune are far more interesting and engaging.
Because of this key difference its hard in theory to make a dune film that captures what makes the books so interesting. The modern dune films don’t fully express this, they are quite Hollywood suitable if that makes sense. But they are technical masterpieces and so are still very entertaining, the level of production is getting to an insanely good level.
They need to accept and integrate the weirder less mainstream/hollywood suitable side of dune to elevate it to a level that can compete with the sheer excitement and thrill of lotr’s fantasy and adventure.

I’m one of those Dune book purists. Dune Part 1 was solidly good, but as for adapting the story, it could have been better. That said, the cinematography and effects were amazing. As a book, Dune is one of my all time favorites. I you try to read it, be patient. There are numerous characters and plot lines that must be established, a little more than 1/4 in, the story begins to roll along and becomes a rich, fulfilling complex story. Up to this point, I give the Lynch version the edge in terms of casting and story adaptation. The previews of Part 2 look great and along with several positive reviews, I look forward to seeing it in theaters.

I loved this movie, I honestly don’t think the pacing of the first half is bad but I do agree the film honestly could’ve used an extra 30 to 45 minutes at the end. I could be completely wrong, but I have heard that the battle scenes in Dune (the book) aren’t super fleshed out so that may have been the reason why certain certain battle scenes weren’t longer. I wish the Director could have added about 30 minutes just to make the battle scenes longer and more intense. Than maybe I could put it up at the same level as The Two Towers. Overall, I think it’s the best sci-fi movie in a long time, and maybe one of the better movies of the entire decade.

Yeah it’s a shame. I wanted to love it (same with Part 1) but was disappointed, but with the production design, sound or individual scenes but with the limitations that the medium of film inherently has. Namely run time. You simply cannot pull off a story with this many narrative threads and characters in the space of a single film without rushing or truncating to a brutal degree, which Dine part 2 does far too much of. First half or part 2 utterly transported me, especially that harvester ambush… and just being in the desert with the Fremen and learning their ways… then there were just too many elements introduced too fast and it fell apart and nothing had any weight.

I have read these books and been a fan for a long time. To me, the most important theme that appears in Dune is a specific duality of human nature. We want peace, but we aren’t made for it. All of our deepest dreams are in the image of paradise, but all of our heroes and legends are remembered for their sacrifices. We as a species feel shame for our violent past, and yet here we are in the year 2024 still waging war on one another.
Dune is not a story about the Spacing Guild or Mentats. It’s not about Chani or Paul or Alia or any one character in particular. Every detail, every bit of world building, is secondary to the true focus of the story: humanity itself.
Watching these movies it’s clear to me that Villeneuve and his team are reading this story and asking the questions Frank Herbert wanted us to ask. I understand many details were changed or even omitted, but Villeneuve still managed to capture the essence of Herbert’s original story. To me that makes this a masterpiece.

For those who read the books (I haven't so I have questions, please bear with me), how did the southern army grow to be so big and remain ununnoticed; how did the Emperor take Paul's bait so easily (and how didn't Irulan and the Reverend mother sense something), and finally, did the final battle seem too rushed in the books as well, because in the movies they made it seem like a piece of cake (was there no any suspicion that the Emperor might get attacked)?
    Thanks ❤

    • @Malekith227
      @Malekith227 2 месяца назад

"how did the southern army grow to be so big and remain ununnoticed"
In the book their is no "southern army". The Fremens are organised in what are basically city states.
They are unnoticed because they pay a tremendous fee to the Spacing Guild (the company that hold a monopoly on faster than light travel) to be assured that no spy satellite can be put in orbit of Arrakis.
And the Imperial Law forbid a too deep exploration of Arrakis in order not to disturb the worms lifecycle and the spice harvesting entreprise.
On top of that, the spiritual leader of the Fremen is Liet Kynes (Chani's father), who is also a very high ranking Imperial official who makes sure that it stays that way.
"how did the Emperror take Paul's bait so easily"
Because he's not that smart, and as almost everybody else he's misinformed.
Spice harvesting is the most important thing in his Imperium, so when it basically stops he makes sure that he's seen as the man who makes it flow again. He brings with him 50 sardaukar legion (an army that is almost as powerful as the totality of the ones of the noble houses combined) to be sure of a swift and easy victory.
"how didn't Irulan and the Reverend mother sense something"
Because in the book prescients cancel each other. Paul can't see what the Bene Gesserit and the Guild is doing and vice versa.
"did the final battle seem too rushed in the books as well, because in the movies they made it seem like a piece of cake"
      Basically yes.
First they use the cover of a gigantic sandstorm to cut a big hole in the mountain chain that protect Arakeen with atomics and then they rush in as fast as possible on the back of big sandworms. Overwhelming the sardaukar army who never faught in these conditions.
Technically the use of weapons of mass destruction is strictly forbidden (even if it's well know that the great houses posses hidden nuclear vaults just in case) so hey never expected that either.
Paul never threathed to use the atomics on the spice though in the books. He threatens to kill all the worms by spraying Water of Life on spice fields.
At that time the Fremen were the only one to know how the worms lifecycle actually work, every attempt to terraform planet and produce spice elsewhere failed so it was a terrifying threat.
      Hope it helped

There is one more interesting thing about all that, apart from ignorance of the Emperor and Harkonens. Unlike other planets Arrakis does not have any satellites around it. The Space Guild puts satellites into orbits of planets. When you ask the Guild to put satellites around Arrakis and especially above the Southern half of the planet they tell you "its very difficult, err... we are working on it, maybe next year, the electricity of storms... they tried but satellites stop functioning, it will be considered ... and the cost is eye watering even for a Great House, and so on". And then you find out that Fremen were paying the guild in Spice - through the smuggler bands like the one Gurney joined, - to keep the satellites off.
And Bene Gesserit cannot "sense" things far away. They are not radars. They can read people and manipulate them, but not when they dont see them and dont know those people exist.
Guild Navigators in turn are very limited in their prescient visions and their abilities are mainly focused on space travel. They could see there is a problem growing on Arrakis but because the future is not pre determined they had no idea why or exactly how..

remember Liet in the 1st movie? He (in the books) fudged his own records that he sent to the emperor on what exactly the local situation was and the census of the locals that no one aside from the local Fremen knew ho many they are in the planet.
The battle unfolded similarly with the movie, the blasted the Shield Wall and the Fremen riding the Sandworms routed the vaunted Sardaukar. What was missing though is that the local populace (basically city Fremen) of Arrakeen rose up and helped to battle the Harkonnens and the Sardauker. They suffered heavy casualties compared to the Fedaykin and the desert Fremen.

    • @JohnJaneson2449
      @JohnJaneson2449 Месяц назад +1

I have read the book, it's been a while but I think I can answer.
      1. The southern regions have been underestimated by all ruling parties: the Emperor/Sardaukar, the Harkonnensn, and the Space Navigators. All of them underestimated Femen settlements due to their individual overconfidences.
The Emperor is overconfident in his Sardaukar power, and in the novel he is actually a hedonistic indulgent man, so he didn't pay attention until it's too late.
The Space Navigators are too obsessed in future sight of only around their destination. They don't care looking at anything else. They are addicts, after all.
And the Harkonnens are just as crazy in the book as in the movie.

    • @JohnJaneson2449
      @JohnJaneson2449 Месяц назад +1

      2. In the novel, the Emperor didn't take a bait. Instead, he sensed something was wrong in the planet Arrakis and decided to step in and set things right himself. He is just an over-indulgent person, and only after he landed on Arrakis, all the events unfold defeating him.
All those defeats are possible only because Paul is using time-sight constantly, almost over-charging his new powers. Every step and command Paul takes is based on the millions of time-sight calculations done when the Emperor arrive.

Jessica is supposed to be reluctant and Chani the supportive one.
Paul and Chani are suppose to have two children together so if they make a sequel they'll have to resolve this plot point that doens't exist in he book.
They made some very strange choices. I understand why they cut out the mentats from the second movie but why did they introduced them in the first one then ? And why did they cut out completely the Guild ? So that the Landsraad can bring their warships without opposition in the end ?
Some part are overly long, and some seem rushed, seemingly at random. I suppose for the sake of making beautiful shots ?
