@johankaewberg8162 Was literally Val's first movie! But it mostly parodies Elvis movies of the 60s and heavily references The Blue Lagoon and Cold War East Germany, none of which millennials know much about. But "Musical spy parody" is all you really need to know.

@@dallesamllhals9161 Pistachios used to be imported into the US from Iran. The harvesting and drying process used created unappetizing stains on the shells. Red dye was used to conceal the stains and make the nuts look more appealing but the dye tended to come off on fingers and lips. In the 1980s, domestic production of pistachios improved, the shells were unstained, and the red dye was no longer needed.

the baseball announcer joke is that the last person was Dr Joyce Brothers. She was a noted psychologist.
the baseball player was none other than legendary Yankee Reggie Jackson (who was playing for the the Angels at the time of the movie).
The song playing during the montage was I'm into something good - by 60s pop band Hermans Hermits. Lead singer is Peter Noone who would be well known for starring in a series of Time Life Books infomercials where they would sell music tapes and cds. Much like the columbia House records 9 albums for a penny.
Top Secret! is another movie from the directors.

The trilogy is worth it. The first & last ones are my favorite, but all 3 are good. You might also want to check into the short-lived series the movies are based off of, it was ahead of it's time & a victim of bad timing. Hollywierd doesn't make these kinds of movies anymore, unsure if it's because they're unwilling or unable to do so. Weird Al did a cameo in all 3 movies, apparently he was a fan of the short-lived series.
To your question at 21:45, back then they painted pistachio nuts red, made them more aesthetically pleasing. It's still done around Christmas time. At the 24:04+ ish mark, what Drebbin would say in that part is a nod the the original Dirty Harry film, where Callahan says something similar to SFs mayor.

"Drebin, I don't want anymore trouble like you had last year on the South Side. Understand? That's my policy."
"Yes. Well, when I see 5 weirdos dressed in togas stabbing a guy in the middle of the park in full view of 100 people, I shoot the bastards. That's MY policy."
"That was a Shakespeare-In-The-Park production of JULIUS CAESAR, you moron! You killed 5 actors! Good ones."
Fun Fact: This is one of three 1988 comedies that features a scene in which a villain is run over by a steamroller. The others are A Fish Called Wanda (1988) and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).
Ed Recasting Fact: According to David Zucker in the DVD commentary, the studio insisted on the casting of an Oscar winner in one of the major roles. This led to the casting of George Kennedy, who had been actively campaigning for the role of Ed Hocken for several months, saying that he was furious at having missed his chance to spoof himself in Airplane! (1980).
Name Change Fact: This movie is a big-screen continuation of the cult cop spoof series Police Squad! (1982). The title was changed to avoid confusion with the Police Academy film franchise, which was also co-created by Pat Proft. David Zucker remembers that they were given a list of about twenty potential titles, and they chose "The Naked Gun" because it promised so much more than it could possibly deliver.

If we start avoiding the work of artists who had, or have or will have something uncomfortable about them, all of the libraries, dramatic and historical works and music storage facilities would now be almost empty. If, within their own lifetime they are doing something reprehensible, yes they must be held accountable,
Edgar Allen Poe was an adict, some of our best composers for centuries had screwed lives and/or perspectives on the world. Or a kindly view unapproved by their governments. The concept behind these movies was cram in as many jokes, and as many kinds of jokes as possible, most won't land with all of the audience, but you only need to make people laugh once every ten minutes for them to enjoy a comedy.

@2:30 "a lot of this is going to go over my head. There is an age gap." Absolutely understandable. Around that table you had: Gorbachev (President of the USSR and a pro-Western reformer - now deceased), Ayatollah Khomeini (former Supreme Leader or Iran and tied to the US Embassy Hostage Crisis - now deceased), Libyan President for Life 1942-2011 Muammar Khadhafi - deceased - finally deposed and killed in a revolution by his own populace - linked to the Lockerbie Scotland Airline bombing and other terrorist bombings), and Idi Amin (genocidal formal dictator of Uganda - now deposed and deceased). Quite the lot of awful people.
@9:08 What's really funny is that Leslie Nielsen used to be a solely "straight" (serious) actor, including I believe playing a doctor on a daytime soap opera for many years. His comedic roles only came later in life.

If watching comedies from the 70s and 80s you need to read about Dr Joyce Brothers. She was well known psychologist also known for a million tv and movie cameos. Always as herself and spouting snippets of wisdom.
One character asked her how long she planned to do this. She answered," As long as there's a breath in my body!!"

Actually there's one small disappointment if you watch Police Squad. This movie reuses some of the jokes. So you'll see a few of the same exact jokes done over.

The public O.J. seemed nice and it didn't hurt that he was a very handsome man. I did and do like him in the Naked Gun movies (and I believe he was also in The Towering Inferno). I guess he was a way more better actor than he was given credit for, when you think of his history of domestic abuse, even before 1994, that the public had no knowledge of.

@@CampCrystalCharlie Yes, he was a pioneer in the early 20th century as a theater and film producer (he collaborated with Orson Welles). As an actor, he excelled at playing stern, humorless authority figures (but this could be used to comical effect, like in this movie). In the 1970s he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the movie "The Paper Chase." He was also known for his Smith Barney commercials ("They make money the old fashioned way...they eaaaarn it!"). I think "Naked Gun" was his final film role.
