One of the things that makes this movie so hilarious is that the majority of the actors were hired specifically because they were known for their serious acting roles. This was Leslie Nielsen's (Dr. Rumack) FIRST EVER comedic role after decades of serious acting, but he would go on to become one of the great comedic leads of the 80s and 90s.

Most of the actors in this movie were serious or dramatic actors. That's what made it such a funny movie. A lot of the scenes go over people's heads, likebthe "Jim never has another cup of coffee at home" that came from a popular commercial in the late 70s. There are so much more that people don't understand because they are dated, unless you lived in that time.

One relatively-unknown bit of trivia: the two people doing the announcements at the airport were the ACTUAL announcers at Los Angeles International (LAX)...and they were married!
Oh, and one other great item - Barbara Billingsley (the Granny who spoke jive) hadn't told any of her family that she had come out of retirement and had been in the movie...so it came as QUITE the surprise when her niece suddenly saw her on screen during that particular scene. Evidently, her niece shouted, "Auntie Barbara!" in the middle of the crowded theater when she saw it.

One of the things that I always chuckle about is that the airplane sound is from a propeller driven plane but they are flying in a jet. In response to an issue with food safety way back in the day, that was when they passed a rule that the pilot and copilot are not allowed to be served the same meal. There are two choices and each one has to have a different meal. I enjoyed seeing you watch this movie and am glad you stuck it out.

Some of my favorite, more subtle gags are:
    1) There are dozens of jars of mayonnaise behind the doctor at the Mayo Clinic, which is a real and prestigious hospital. Somehow, I must have seen this film at least a dozen times before I finally noticed this gag, which isn't all that subtle.
    2) It does not make sense that a film made in 1980 has a younger character who flew in World War 2, which ended in 1945. This storyline comes from the melodrama "Zero Hour!" which inspired this spoof. It did make sense in that 1957 film.
    3) The name of Rex Kramer's seemingly friendly but actually vicious dog is "Shep," which is the name of the dog in at least one of the "Lassie" films about a boy and his canine best friend.
    4) During the doctor's pep talk to Ted, he mentions a character named George Zipp. This is a reference to George Gipp (1895-1920). He played American football for the famous team of the University of Notre Dame. Gipp died from infections which would likely be cured with today's medicine. In the Hollywood, probably fictional, version of him on his deathbed, he asked the coach that one day in the future, when victory seemed unlikely, the team should find a way to "win just one for the Gipper." When the doctor in this film says, "win one for the Zipper," the music playing is the "fight song" for the University of Notre Dame "Fighting Irish" football team.
    5) There is a scene where the chief in the control tower asks for the compass bearing of the plane. The radar operator is playing an Atari basketball game instead, and he gives the time remaining in the game as the compass bearing.
    6) Every time the jet aircraft is shown flying, you can hear the sound of propeller engines.

What many don't know is Airplane! was an almost shot for shot renake of a serious B&W movie called Zero Hour! (right down to the ! in the title).
Just the different context or background made the serious dialog in tge original hilarious.
One frequent shot was the exterior of the (propeller) airliner flying through the storm, with loud propeller sound. In Airplane! they showed the jet airliner flying through the storm--with the exact same propeller sound from the original movie😂
Another missed detail is the co-pilot in both was a well-known retired sports hero: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Football star Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch in the original.
There is a side by side mashup on RUclips with both movies. It makes Airplane! even better when you see how they used so much of the original dialog and scenes but made it funny just by the way it was presented.

Airplane is based on a movie from the 1950s called zero hour.
Prior to Airplane, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen were all dramatic actors. This was their first comedy.
“Airplane! (alternatively titled Flying High!)[5] is a 1980 American parody film written and directed by the brothers David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams in their directorial debuts,[6] and produced by Jon Davison. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson.[6] It is a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows its plot and central characters,[7] also drawing many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the Airport series. It is known for its use of surreal humor and fast-paced slapstick comedy, including visual and verbal puns, gags, running jokes, and obscure humor.”

Mel Brooks, the guy who directed Blazing Saddles, and played several characters, I also highly recommend three other movies he made in the 80's and 90's. Young Frankenstein, Space Balls, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Where Blazing Saddles was a parody of old westerns, Young Frankenstein is a parody of Universal Monster Movies, Space Balls is a parody of Star Wars with other sci-fi references, and Robin Hood is a parody of the 90's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, with some other action adventure jokes, and even a few extra call backs from other Mel movies.

  • @malcolmmceasy2252

    A few points...
    1. The whole "George Zip" gag was a parody of the 1940 film "Knute Rockne: All American". In that film, future president Ronald Reagan (then still an actor), was on his death bed, and gave the same speech, ending with "win one for the Gipper". In Airplane, the music being played during this scene is the fight song from Notre Dame, the college that George Gipp played at.
    2. If you like this kind of campy/silly humor, you should check out "Batman: the Movie" (1966) starring Adam West.

The idea that people would rather kill themselves than listen to a guy's war stories is more brutal the more I think about it XD. Especially as this movie came only five years after the Vietnam War!

Trans American Airlines is a play on Pan American Airlines (Pan Am) and Trans World Airlines (TWA). Pan Am was the airlines (spacelines) in 2001: A Space Odyssey. They accepted reservations for tickets to the first commercial flight into orbit or to the Moon, I don't remember which. I still have my TWA Frequent Flyer Card in my Museum of Antiquities (a shelf at work, from which I'm retiring on Jan 12), along with a Pickett Slide Rule in Optical Yellow complete with user's manual and registration card (picked up from a neighbor in a yard sale 30 years ago) and my TI-30 that I bought in high school in probably 1979/1980.

This movie borrow much of its dialog from an earlier movie Zero Hour. It also parodies scenes from Knute Rocknie, From Here to Eternity and Airpot.
Also, people born after 1980 won't be aware that in the '70's members of various religious cults such as the Hare Krishnas or the Mooniess (Reverend Sun Yung Moon) and other charities were free to panhandle in our airports. That's the two guys in the two-colored robes.
Being pestered in airports by people handing out flowers was quite common.

22:25 I worked on Flight Management computers (and other cockpit stuff) for over 30 years. Before digitization and the Glass Cockpit this scene is only a slight exaggeration. There's a reason that a 747 can now be flown by only a Pilot and Copilot while it used to also require a Flight Engineer. I hired on to work on the 2-crew Glass Cockpit 747-400 with my current employer in 1987.

This was funny movies back in the 1980s: they were visual - the movie didn't tell you the gag, you had to figure it out from watching it. Like the blow up autopilot.
Something you realize on your own is much funnier than somebody telling you.
