Speaking of bad parts of South Philly, visit the area around 5th street, Wolf to Warren and beyond. When you start seeing all the broken tail lights and car windows it's time to roll up the windows, lock the doors and put the first round in the chamber.

Those are new construction 'townhomes' - realtors hate to call anything new a rowhouse, even if it's just a rowhouse on steroids with a garage in the bottom. The garages are nice, I gotta admit, and it gives owners a guaranteed place to park, which is rare in South Philly, land of pavement parking and parking in the middle of Broad St.
Interesting how some people insist there is no such thing as a "Mafia". This even though the word is mentioned every day in Italy, Sicily, and in Sardinia (in the latter it has long had conflicts with the Carabinieri). I have watched Italian news broadcasts and fictional TV programming such as detectives Montalbano. Ricciardi, and Brunetti ~ all portray Mafia characters and have no trouble mentioning how it menaces society. I can accept that there is no such thing as the mythic "National Crime Syndicate". That while this organization did exist (established in 1932 by Lucky Luciano) it was destroyed by him and the FBI in 1957's mass stake out in Central New York. It had become a Frankenstein's monster and was out of control. Once broken, several "mafias" (small m) branched out on their own and control various industries such as construction, cement, metals, wiring, plumbing, and others especially in urban areas.

Parking in south Philly isn't that bad, worst I have ever had to walk in south Philly is 2 blocks after parking in a legal, free 2 hour spot. Center city is worse. I usually have to park in the Hawthorne section to get a free 2 hour spot and walk 10 or 20 blocks to avoid that meter crap. University city has that meter crap also. As you know PPA patrols all day marking the time, location and tag # of vehicles and sends tickets via mail a month after the supposed violation. I had one of PPA's finest (short girl wearing a weave that was longer than her body) send me a ticket just for stopping my vehicle to pick up a disabled passenger. I digress.
