- I had an issue since I bought the Jeep about 6 months ago where the oil pressure would always max out at 80 as soon as I started the Jeep. It would never move until I shut it off and it would drop back to zero. So I figured I may as well start with the oil pressure sensor unit.

Thanks for the tutorial i couldn't figure out how to get that thing off it was that stupid red tab
You're welcome. Yeah that red tab was going to be the death of me!! LOL
Thank you for posting. Went to a mechanic and he fiddled with other crap and didn't solve the issue. I looked online and figured it out, and thanks to this video, I'll be able to swap out the old for the new and not get screwed out of more $$$. An hour fix us what I was told by another mechanic. Jerks!
Thank you for posting this! Just happened to me out in the desert. Ordering part now!
Hope it helps. It's an easy part to replace.
Thanks, Mate!
You're welcome. Hope it helped
I was getting lower oil pressure than I should (never exceeded 40, liked to sit near 10 after a while) but it still varied in the right patterns if that makes sense so it was concerning that my 255K motor was on its way out. I purchased a gauge and said “Thank Jesus” when I saw that it was 50-70psi. The whole plastic housing snapping very easily was a good tell that I was hopefully gonna have good results. My $13 Amazonian is on the way.
Going through the same issue ordered the sending unit and will be playing this while I replace it
Cool. Hopefully it's just the sending unit like mine was. It seems that most Jeeps that have this issue, the sending unit is usually the culprit.
What size was the socket you used? I am about to go grab the deep socket but have no clue the size. Yes when I start the XJ up it does the same..
@@rainier7976 1 and 1/16" socket. Sorry just reading this now and you probably already figured it out by now
Some good vids Joe. I found you on the stereo install. Just getting around to that on my 2000. You still have the XJ? Saw you were working on a Tacoma more recently.
@@mitchelltheriot4504 Thanks. Yeah unfortunately I sold the Cherokee. Wasn't sure if I wanted to, but I put it up for a price and said to myself "If I get my asking price I'll let her go." Sure enough, 2 days later someone checked it out and bought it for my asking price. After that I bought the Tacoma
That clip that holds the connectors together is the hard part of this replacement. Looks like the previous owner just broke it off and taped the connector back on! This part is less than $20 on Ebay, the 1-1/16 deep socket is $8.00 at Harbor Freight.
Couldn't help but notice the loose spark plugs eekk. Anyhow my 99 XJ oil pressure is maxed out as well and wasn't sure if it were the sender till now. Thanks
Loose? Hmm, trying to figure out where you saw that. Only thing I can think of is at 4:25 it looks like one is wiggling with the engine running. Good catch, I wish I still had the Jeep so I could check it. Fortunately it never became an issue. But now you have me curious! Thanks
Does this have to be done during and oil change when the oil is out? Or are we able to this when oil is at full capacity?
It can be done at any time. The oil is all in the pan when the engine is off. You will want to wait for the engine to be cool of course, but no oil leaks out when you replace the switch
How do you unhook the unit so easily? What do you do with those red tabs I can't get it off and I don't want to break it off
I hate that Ford oil pressure sending units peg full with the engine running to let you know you have oil pressure but it never registers low or high although it has a sweeping gauge needle....hate that.
Mine rises with acceleration/1st start of the day?
That is pretty normal. The oil pressure inside the motor increases as the motor works harder. It should level out, but not uncommon for it to rise under acceleration. Most gauges aren't that accurate to begin with and just there to give you a ballpark look.
Fast forward to now I bought one bc mine is going right to max now, over the past few weeks it acted like that dog slowly shying its way to you and now it's the full way
@@travishebler5693 It's common on these Jeeps. At least it's a pretty inexpensive and easy fix. Or you can just leave it as is. But I hate when gauges don't work and usually try to fix them or my OCD gets the better of me :)
I welcome it as a nice learning experience for after this winter when I hopefully have enough to have a new engine put in. Almost 210k and I at least think new spark plugs wouldn't hurt bc it has that occasional "miss" sound but I don't hear it bogging down or anything I would deem off. I appreciate the comments back not too many people are kind out there!
@@Mudslidex1 same my xj just did this.. I know it prob doesn't have 80 psi.. but to be safe it's best to jest replace the cheap unit and know for sure... now the real problem is if you replace the sender and it reads max while running still... then your in trouble cuz you might have a clog downstream 8n the oil system
So I had a problem with my oil pressure reading 0. I changed the sending unit and it fixed the problem I thought. Well now it will read my oil pressure as good and then after the Jeep runs and gets warm it goes back to not reading at all. Any ideas? The sending unit fixed it but it didn't...
That's tough to say. It "could" be a bad sending unit. It happens. I doubt you actually have zero oil pressure or you would be having bigger problems right now. That's tough to say. My original did give a reading, just incorrect. So they can still work..but not work if they are defective
@@Mudslidex1 no I know the oil pressure is good and not Zero. Like I said I put the new sending unit on and I thought it fixed my problem bc when I crank the Jeep it shows good oil pressure now but after running for about 5 min the guage will read zero again. I can then cut the Jeep off and crank it back up and same issue...shows good pressure for a few min then stops working.
@@dylanreynolds4899 I wish I had an answer for you. I hate problems like this that don’t make sense. Maybe check the connection again? Maybe when the oil and engine compartment heats up, the expansion causes it to lose connection? Sorry just brainstorming here. I’m sure you checked that already.
@@Mudslidex1 idk man I've checked everything I know to check so maybe like you said when the oil gets hot it cause something to short out but then again I can cut the motor off as soon as the gauge reads zeros and cut it right back on and it will work fine for about 5 min then does the same again...makes no sense
Let me know if you come up with any ideas and I'll keep you updated if I figure out a solution. Gonna try returning the new sending unit and try a different brand
