    Insightful review. As someone new to the X100 series, my first in February 2024 was a vi, I agree, it is fun to use. I have taken it skiing, hiking and visiting cities and used it for general photography and it delivers!

      @@juleshorse9056 Certainly does. Most important is that it's fun to use. The used market is full of all kinds of cameras that have collected dust because they just to inspire people to take them out. Never really have that problem with the X100VI.

    Been using the X100 series for 4 years now (X100V and now VI). It’s my everyday carry camera and I can’t complain really. Gets great results, portable, small. Its subtle and unassuming enough to not make people cagey like when I have a bigger more professional presenting camera.

    You nailed it. I just received the X100vi I ordered a week after release. I normally use an XT-5, so a little closer comparison. The X100vi lens isn't as good as the more modern interchangeable options for the 40mp sensor... and it doesn't matter. It's good enough not to worry about unless the background blur is important to the composition. The built-in flash and ND filter is definitely a secret weapon to pull a subject out against a busy background.
    For my personal tastes I've found there's almost always a film simulation that's 90% of what I would want to do in a RAW edit. I just bias the white balance a little warmer in camera and keep the jpegs more often than not. It's definitely not on the same tier as a full frame ILC for ultimate image quality, but it's good, possibly great, and much cheaper and easier to take with you.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  19 дней назад +1

      Agreed with all of this. I wanted to talk about the flash and using it more, but I think I'll save it for a separate video. It's overall just really versatile. Even just capturing basic video, it's really high quality. And video is especially something that I don't think you need full-frame for all the time.

    Well done, Chris. I don't have an X100VI but I go back and forth between full frame and m43 Olympus and Lumix cameras. Every camera is a compromise. You did a great job presenting the strengths and weaknesses here. Thanks.

    Both an excellent comparison and an unfair one! Excellent, because objectively it compares the two cameras, A7IV and X100vi, for their pros, cons and use cases. Unfair, because the A7VI is full frame, costs with the 35/f.1.4 £2899 and weighs 1182 grams, whereas the X100vi is APS-C, costs £1599 and weighs 521 grams. Given the differences, I think the Fuji does pretty well. I got my X100vi in February and have used it for skiing, hiking, city visits and general days out. It is small, light and convenient to use and gives excellent IQ for most scenes. My XT5 and 16-55/f2.8 have not seen much use since February!
    This is an excellent review because it goes beyond comparing two cameras by giving insights into two formats and systems. Thank you.

    I have Canon full frame for professional work and Fuji (this and a few others) for everyday. One of the biggest things for me that you also mentioned is being able to take it into events that have very strict rules. It’s important to me personally to be able to use a camera instead of my phone for better quality so I love knowing I can take this or my x70 into those events. I’ve also loved not having to edit my everyday and travel photos unless I want to (and I use the raw conversion often when I don’t like how a photo turned out the first time or if I had a setting wrong)
    I do agree about the autofocus when having someone else take a photo. Mine are often slightly missed even when I’ve tried having people use the touch shutter option. But mostly it’s great and that works for me :)

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  19 дней назад

      Agreed. On the rare occasions I've decided to leave it at home and just bring my phone, I usually regret it. Even if I can get some shots of similar quality with the iPhone raw files, it's just not nearly as fun to use.

    dude this is a great video. i agree with all the stuff you talked about here. been shooting with the x100vi since May and its been great. coming from a full frame sony it was such a big change in all aspects. my entire process for photography has changed with the fuji. i still edit my photos sometimes but a lot less than i used to, because for me thats one of the best parts of this camera. for me, this camera is less about getting max resolution, sharpness and autofocus speed, all of that is made up by the fun im having while using it and sharing the photos with friends and family. I actually want to bring the camera with me places unlike my a7iii with a 35 gm. being able to put more of my focus on the light and composition of whats around me rather than overthinking everything like lens choice and editing style. to me this camera just offers an experience that you cant really find in any other digital camera, and has some of the most unique and useful features like the ovf and built in nd. yes my 24mp full frame sony can take a sharper photo than the 40mp sensor on the fuji but its just not why i bought the camera. i shot more this past year than i have in years thanks to the x100vi

    X100 is a blast to use... For about 3 months, then the novelty wears off. Then you start to wonder if you really like it or just the way it looks. The X100 starts to get heavy, you begin to wonder if you have to strap it or bag it, why not bring something a little more flexible, perhaps faster glass, a zoom. I had an X100f, it's a great experience for a little while, but it's not really a ticket price I'd pay for after owning one.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  25 дней назад +4

      I think what wears off first is probably film simulations and recipes. If you have a particular look that you like, you'll probably start stickign to it. But if you're not someone who edits or ever cares to, they're pretty valuable. For me, after owning it for eight months, it's the size that keeps me coming back. Way better than shooting with a phone, and I like what I can do with the raw files. But if size and the JPEG recipes don't matter, I thnk people can find a full-frame kit for a close enough price on the used market.

      Couple years ago I decided (in lieu of an X100V) to pick up a little black X-E4, and with that 27mm WR lens and a square hood, I feel like it’s a lighter, more compact X100V (thank goodness I also got IT when it could still be had for retail $$!). But I think there’s no denying that much of the X100V is novelty. With my X-E4 for instance, I could swap out the pancake 27mm with the 18-55 or 35mm. So not only is it more portable than the X100V, it’s also more versatile. Just my thoughts🙏🏼

    Thank you for this video. Few important X100VI options are the built in flash (does help out sufficiently on occasion), the leaf shutter (silent and allows flash up to shutter speed 1/4000) and a built in 4 stop ND filter.
    For me the bokeh is not too important as a 35 mm (equivalent) lens is meant to show some surroundings and depth of field can be handled a bit in post nowadays. Have made professional portraits with it.
    Yes, for heavy duty (speed and low light) I use my R6 and expensive lenses.
    And I am probably not the only photographer who uses a ‘main’ camera to prevent clients from feeling anxious looking at a smaller camera.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  19 дней назад

      Yeah I definitely didn't give the leaf shutter enough attention. That was another big reason I bought it. I can keep things quiet without having to use an electronic shutter. I used it the other day on a client shoot alongside my A7 IV for some more candid looking "retro" shots, and they loved those too.

    I had to admit the hype is real for this camera after having a look at the meta data of a work collegues photos that I thought where remarkably good. The photos all came from the X100V. I now own a X100VI as a daily point and shoot and it's just so satisfying to use. Some of the photos are just so beautiful I am thankful this camera is such a joy to use, it inspires me to take it around and always shoot photos that got these shots. I filled up a 32gb card in a under a week ive been using it so much. Its now hard to decide what images to leave behind because there are so many nice shots with this camera. The hardest part of owning this camera is when you are not using it.

    • @ChrisHagan

      @ChrisHagan in terms of "casual" photography or self-motivated shooting; just how much a camera motivates you to pick it up, bring it with you and use it becomes the deciding factor for this usage case for me. This camera has that "pick me up and use me" factor. It's hard to deny it's charisma and charm and that's why I chose it as a daily, take everywhere shooter; even if it's a lot bulkier/cumbersome than say a pocketable GRiii, it's just so fun to play with and makes photography "fun". I'm not a hater of this camera anymore that's for sure lol

  • @linalbert
    @linalbert 5 дней назад

    its small form factor and film simulations make this combo a winner. I have tried using a Canon R5 with a 50mm f1.2 lens as a carry around camera. Its so damn heavy and big! Although the images it produces are beautiful, its just too heavy to be lugging around in your bag. So the X100VI wins out for sure in its convenience to just be everywhere with you.

    Very insightful feedback. I have the a7cii and the x100vi and all your observations are in line with mine. I now carry the a7cii with the 85 1.8 alongside with the x100vi. But on most days I just carry the x100vi because it's just easier and more fun to use. I don't do pro photography anymore and having to process hundreds of photos in lightroom still gives me ptsd 😂

    With the X100VI I have pictures I would otherwise not have had as would not have brought the R6.

    Great video. I came from a A6000 to the X100vi and still notice the slow auto focus. I’m about 3200 shots deep and still find it annoying using the joy stick to manually select where I want focus as I’ve all but given up on letting the camera hopefully know what I want. For reference I enjoy street photography and stationary car scene photos so I’m hardly asking much of auto focus. Software update has just dropped which is aimed at auto focus… I’ve loaded it to the camera but yet to use it in any real situations. Fingers crossed but I’m not hopeful, I feel that mechanically the speed the lens moves at (quite noisily) is always going to be a limiting factor. FWIW I love the camera overall I just refuse to ignore its obvious shortcomings for the price even though for me it was a gift.

    Any thoughts on the larger file sizes of the X100VI vs X100V? Seems like the extra megapixels create unnecessarily large files unless cropping.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  12 дней назад

      If you're pulling the JPEG straight off the SD card, yeah, those file sizes are on the large side. But if you transfer them via Fujifilm app, there's an option (I think turned on by default) that compresses the size. A normal JPEG is about 40 MB, and I think the compressed file via wireless transfer was around 10 MB.
      Otherwise, I haven't found much else of a solution for smaller files yet if you're shooting "Fine" JPEGs. When I export my edits from Lightroom, I usually cap them at 20 MB since that's the max my website allows for uploads.

    I have shot Fuji from 2018 to present. XT2, XT3 (two of them) and XT5. I shot the X100F and now the X100V which is miles ahead of the F. It’s just a bit slow. But I’ll never get rid of it. I did however, sell my XT5 and lenses and have moved to the Nikon Zf. The autofocus on the XT5 just was too slow for pro shoots. The Nikon Zf autofocus is amazing, colors are great, it’s full frame, and it’s retro while being fast and accurate. I’m so sold on Nikon that I’m saving for another Nikon body.
    But I digress. The X100 series is just perfect. I shoot professionally and I’ve used it for client shoots all the time. I’m a studio and portrait photographer so I don’t need speed.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  15 дней назад +1

      Definitely plan on renting / trying my friend's the Zf soon. I stopped by B&H when I was in NYC a few weeks ago just to get my hands on one and no lie, a total stranger saw me messing around with it and came over to tell me just how much he loves his. Nikon has some great bodies out right now. I'm just too deep into the Sony system also to want to totally switch over.
      I think what keeps everyone hooked on the X100 series in the end is size + the ability to get some pro quality images out of it.

      A lot of them were the Portra 800 and Ultramax 400 recipes from Fuji X Weekly.
      Some were just one I just kinda tweak as needed, basically the Provia film simulation, grain either strong/small or weak/small, AWB White Priority (usually 3 R, -5 B but adjusted as needed), Highlights +1, Shadows +1, Color +3, Sharpness -2, Clarity 0 (even for the Fuji X Weekly recipes) because I don't like adjusting the clarity when it slows down the processing.
      For black and whites, I prefer the Ilford HP5 400 Plus recipe from Fuji X Weekly.
      And I usually shot with a Glimmerglass 1 or some sort of 1/4 mist filter. I think I like Gilmmerglass 1 most though. Doesn't wash out the contrast as much.

I do wonder from time to time if another system would have made more sense for an artistic standpoint, but I chose Sony for standardized professional workflows to (in addition to wedding and nature photography and small events videography) be able to sell freelance video footage to news stations. I’ve never heard of a “Fuji” oriented newsstation, but I could be wrong. People can argue about Cannon color or Fuji IQ being superior to Sony, but it’s workflow that pays the bills.

      I'd say if you're a good photo editor, you can get nearly the same quality for wide angle shots during daylight. But for medium / close up shots where you want a little more of a shallow depth of field and detail, the X100VI will be better. And the images (raw and jpeg) feel more organic and less processed.

    Nice video. I'm a new photographer, and was split for a while on the X100VI and the Nikon Zf. Ended up getting the Zf, since the X100VI is basically impossible to get. Love it! Can't say I'm not still tempted by the X100VI though... Curious what your opinions are on the new autofocus update on the Fuji? It looks like it's a nice improvement.

      Social media just has a way of making the cameras we don't have look so much fun haha. When I was in NY a few weeks ago, I went to B&H just to put my hands on a Zf because it's been getting so much hype recently. Definitely a snappy, attractive camera. Plan on shooting with a friend of mine's Zf in the near future and seeing what those raw files are like.

      Had the Zf for a short while to write a review for my blog. Its a really great camera. The full frame files are from another league, thats for sure. Especially at low light the ZF blows the X100VI out of the water. But its very big and heavy and not comfortably to hold without a extra grip. Portability wise the X100VI wins hands down IMO. The AF is great on the ZF, but I have no bigger problems with the X100VI either. Still I debate to sell my X100VI for the X-T5 (or the older X-T3), because I miss the ability to use a nice bright 50mm lens. 😏

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  19 дней назад

      Kodak Portra 800 from Fuji X Weekly is my favorite for sunny days. I love the warm tones, and its fixed white balance gives it more of a "film look," at least as much as any recipe I've found.
      Ultramax 400 from Fuji X Weekly is another one I really like. Colorful but not overdone, and auto white balance helps keep things from getting to wonky in some situations. Gonna make a video about all of my favorites for different situations soon.

    RE: Delay in taking photo, is not just an AF issue. It Also occurs in manual focus. Unless you are setup to F2, at half depression of shutter, the aperture closes to the set size, then it does AF. MF only skips the AF part, but you can’t get rid of aperture only changing at half depression. It’s a really dumb system.

    As someone who uses the a7iv and the x100v…. I am kind of getting bored of the fuji. And when I take them both out I always prefer the sony files just because they are so much more crisp especially at night or when conditions aren’t ideal. I think with sony and other systems having extremely small n light lens options as well as a7c type bodies im thinking of making a small sony package my walk around camera. The fuji film simulations while they r nice I always see myself wanting more pop, and taking the raw images and editing them myself anyway. I think I will be selling my x100v

      I hear you.. Even with the variety of recipes available, I think most people only stick to a few because that's just their particular taste. And if that's the case, and you find yourself editing, kinda defeats the purpose of using the recipes anyway. Sony definitely has some attractive, small lenses that I wanna try too.

    Bought a Fujifilm XT50 as an every day carry camera, and everyday many images are out of focus. I have an A7 CR which is the same size or smaller with small lenses and have never had a single image out of focus. Tinkering and I get out of camera images everyday that are as good and better than the Fuji. Big mistake.

      Sony's autofocus is always gonna be king. I will say that after updating the firmware on my X100VI, the autofocus has been a little better. I wouldn't say I've ever missed "a lot" of images due to being out of focus, but it just takes a tad bit more time to make sure. So I feel your pain. I don't have any of the compact Sony bodies, but in your case, yeah, I'd stick with the A7CR cuz that's going to smoke anything else at that size.

    Njve video, really, I apreciate it, but, what's abot the lens of the fuji? I used it quite a lot and honestlyz that lens is not impressive, on the soft side, without eny kind of caracter... Just average/ok. Not acceptable for a camera with a fixed lens and for that ammount of money. Fixed this issue, would solve quite few of the point you've mentioned.

    Why do RUclips photographers always say the most important thing is image quality? The most important thing about photography is the thing you are photographing.

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  14 дней назад

      @@kurtkgledhill It's all subjective. But image quality is emphasized because most people want the photo they capture / share to be of a certain quality that they can be proud of. I certainly wouldn't carry around a Nikon Z9 or large flagship for the sake of getting the best quality, but I also don't want a bunch of lower quality smartphone photos. Every camera has its place, and if a phone is the best you've got, make the most of it. But the X100VI is a great balance of size and image quality. And in the case of this comparison, the A7 IV is a little bigger, so it opens the door to debate whether the improved quality is worth it.

    • @kurtkgledhill
      @kurtkgledhill 14 дней назад

      @ when making a camera review the only two things you really need to mention is… How quickly can you get the camera to your eye, and is there any shutter lag. Image quality means nothing. Take Robert Capa‘s D~Day image for example. The image quality is atrocious, but you or I or 99.9% of the people in the world will never make a better photograph than that.
      I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have even said anything, I work up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and took it out on your video. I do apologize! Have a happy new year!

    • @ChrisHagan
      @ChrisHagan  9 дней назад

      I think it's more about the size, how much the look encourages you to shoot. It's undeniably more comfortable to carry and draws less attention when taking it out for just everyday photography. Maybe you think my images aren't so great (trying to fill a 31-minute video means using some that I normally may not share), but people take a lot of incredible photos with the X100 series. It's a good best of both worlds camera whether you're trying to take "bangers" or just documenting everyday life with something more enjoyable to use than a smartphone.
