Sony 28mm f/2 in 2024 | Is this cheap lens any good?
So many people talk about this focal length that I had to give the Sony 28mm f/2 prime lens a try. Why? Because if I like it, it's super cheap and a small lens that could be easy to carry around and capture daily life with.
In this video, I'll share the pros and cons of this lens and whether or not I think it's worth the money in 2024.

Tamron 70-180 G2 | A Junior G-Master?

Tamron's consistently been making some of the best third party lenses for Sony's E-Mount, and this second version of their 70-180 f/2.8 swings well above its price. Its biggest competition, in terms of more budget-friendly telephoto lenses, is Sigma's 70-200 f/2.8 and Sony's 70-200 f/4 G OSS II, which I've recently reviewed as well. However, this lens ALMOST hits as hard as the best telephoto o...

Solid work. Thanks Chris!
I’ve always wondered why this lens doesn’t get more love.
This is the best and usefull review I've seen on this lens. You're asking the right questions... and giving the answers. Thanks a lot and congratulations
I just bought 35mm gm and couldn't be happier....I tend to shoot wide alot so naturally I have a lot of wide angle primes and zooms. So I wanted to get something not too wide but not to close and the 35 achieves that. I had the 24mm gm but felt it was too close to my 20mm g lens so I got rid of it now with a combo of 20mm 35mm and Sigma 10-18mm I feel I'm covered at the wide range. I do have the 40mm g lens which is great and compact but misses that pop only being a 2.5. I'm thinking I need the sony 55mm f1.8 to cover the last prime I need and feel the rest with the tampon 70-180 later on in the future.
Thanks for the awesome video. This does sound like a great lens. I'd still love to get the GM for lower light situations. Keep up the good work.

it's look like that Tammy lack's on micro-contrast?Am i wrong?Thanks!BTW great video!
Wow, your photos are so sharp !!
Do you think it would've shot this video as clean as the lens you used?
@@brentnora8128 Yes. I used a 35mm GM for the stuff in the studio. But I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference between them side by side for video.
I'm sold man
New sub, dude! New sub!
thank you l need your help please I bought a Sony A7III and am looking for a lens to shoot bridal, wedding and portrait sessions i need lens creates stunning images with a special character that competes with other photographers. In your opinion, is this lens suitable? Or i choose one of these options 1_ sigma 85 1.4 dg dn with sigma 24-70 g2 2_ sony 50mm 1.2 3- sigma 28-105. f 2.8
@@esam_soliman_music ooh this one really made me think. I’m gonna say option 1. I think a 24-70 covers a lot of what you need. And being able to go wide at 24mm can create some really cool shots depending on how you position the couple in a specific scene. And the 85 1.4 is the definition of stunning. Shooting that wide open at 1.4 will make your subjects pop.
@@ChrisHagan do u think I can have that special character with tamron 35-150 at 85mm or 150mm as the sigma 85 1.4 dg dn or there is i big difference?
@@esam_soliman_music I think once you get to 85 and beyond, your images stand out a bit more because it’s in that telephoto range that compresses the image so well and makes people portraits most flattering. I have no problem with any part of the 35-150 range, and I think you’ll love your images. But with any lens, look for unique lighting, foreground elements or anything that can make your photos great beyond the lens.
Nice video. I consider one benefit it has over the Tamron being its tripod collar and foot for shooting on a tripod. For stills it's handy for both landscape type shots with longer exposure times and potentially for some macro shots. I wouldn't want to put my A7Cii on a tripod with the Tamron 70-180/2,8 attached..even if it's probably fine mechanically it'll be more sensitive to wind and movement. The foot provides a better point of balance (even if it moves slightly with the zoom action extension). For all handheld photography I'd go with the Tamron, both for the fiscal savings as well as for the low light & blur capabilities of f/2,8 vs f/4.
Nice review. Thank you.
Great video thanks!
I'm not surprised the camera had trouble focussing on the toy at 4.03 in - when you reduced the focus area, you made it entirely black. Any camera would struggle if you do that.
I have the a9iii and it keeps up very well. I enjoy it and the half maro is very nice
what do you think about sigma 70-200mm f2.8? price range is around sony f4 ii lens.
I haven't used it personally, but it looks like another great contender. It's heavier than Sony and Tamron's latest options, but if you're fine with that, Sigma often makes lenses optically just as good as Sony. Just won't shoot faster than 15 fps, if that matters to you.
Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 or Sony 70-200mm f/4 Macro??????
I like the build and features of the Sony better. But if you gotta have f/2.8, Tamron.
im looking at picking this up paired with a 20-70 f/4 for my trip to thailand next year. pair it with an fx3 or zve1 & that f4 light problem is non existent
Yeah the f4 is great for video. That'll be a killer combo!
It’s like you knew I needed this video and made it for me! Love it! Thanks, Chris!
@@Caleb_Denison my guy! Always happy to help!
Great review! I personally own a Tamron 35-150 and was wondering if you feel like the 180 is too redundant with 150/what alternatives you would consider if I wanted more reach? I use an A7IV and mainly shoot sports/events btw
I think it's a bit redundant and wouldn't buy another lens just for the additional 30mm. For indoor events or things in low light, I'd stick with the 35-150 and hopefully that's long enough. But for sports, check out Sony's 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 GM. I've used it handheld for football and loved it. For reference, was able to shoot around 6400 ISO with 1/800 sec shutter for college football at night. So as long as you've got some decent available light, it's a good option with a lot more reach.
@@ChrisHagan awesome, thank you very much for the quick response! I plan on renting that lens or a Tamron with similar features and then I’ll try to start saving up my pennies lol
I don't think the biggest elephant is the 20mm but how much the stabilization might fight with your pans in video since it doesn't have a mode selector switch (which Tamron uses on lenses like the 50-400). I've seen video evidence that leads to contradictory conclusions -- both that it's fine and also that it's terrible and creates jerky pans at times -- so it might be helpful to weigh in there a bit more specifically (obviously the now discounted G1 version without stabilization is an option!). I can't really tell from your footage since there's a lot of motion blur (sports people crank our shutter speed up past the 180 degree rule; I film 120fps with 1/500 often). Buying a lens in this focal range is clearly the most complicated piece of the puzzle for most of us these days with so many options and tradeoffs.
@@rl-films Yeah.. my video example wasn't the best. Wish I would've gotten more for this video. I'll try to get more in the future and update my findings. And the A7IV's rolling shutter is gross and doesn't help matters. But I do like the options in the telephoto category so we can all pick which works best for us, just hard to find one that checks all the boxes unless you go with the GM mark II.
You're such a professional. I just got mine too & had to make a review from a action perspective. Best audio upgrade.
Recently bought this lens when I upgraded to the Sony A7, it takes great photos and videos. Enjoyed your review.
I bought one to add to my travel kit and I’m using it on my compact C bodies like the A7CR and A7CII. I’ve always owned a f/2.8 70-200 and have the GM II since it came out but size, weight, and versatility convinced me to get the f/4 G and I found a mint used copy to save some money. Also can leave my FE 90/2.8 G MACRO at home now so it really lightens my load when low light is not a must. Thank you for your video and take care.
Great review, I got mine 2 weeks ago & it very quickly became 1 of my fav lenses, due to it's size, weight & versatility.
Good pictures

One of the better reviews of this lens ... subscribed!
Thank you! All of my favorite reviewers give at least some real world use so I always try to do the same.
This got to be one of the best reviews of the A7IV that I had watched on you tube.
A classic clean, sharp, Sony news-footage-worthy, editorial gathering lens that, as long as you have your exposure correct, tells it like it is with no "character coloring": very important in news gathering. Any of the footage you got here could have been shown on any evening news channel. I admit, I might not have considered it before your review. Well done. PS: Keep plugging; I knew your channel would grow!
Thanks! I'm sure the video stems from the sports reporter background in me.
Great video, Chris. I like the integration of storytelling into the video, i.e. your sister-in-law’s marathon shots. You deserve more subscribers!
Thank you! I try to add a level of storytelling to the videos where I can and will try to do more in the future. Glad it doesn't go unnoticed!
I bought this lens. It doesn’t take the most stunning images but it’s really good. It’s light and focuses so close for 70-200.
What's the downsides with the image quality would you say?
@@ush45none…. It’s a pretty sharp lens… maybe if you compare with prime lens or super expensive zoom lens you can see the difference.
You would love the first version even more. Especially that internal zoom. Such a shame Sony didn't implement it on this lens.
Pros choose rather brighter lenses and that's nothing weird because they make a living from photography. But the f/4 like this one should be good enough for most shooters 👌If it's too expensive there are still great third party alternatives.
Not really. This lens focuses insanely close. Others can’t focus less than 4 feet
Excellent presentation of material. Success in the development of the channel.
I am thinking of going for the 70-200mm f2.8 GMII is there a huge difference or is the extra 1/3rd of an F Stop of light worth it?
f/2.8 to f/4 is actually a full stop of light difference, and it certainly makes a difference indoors in dimly lit scenarios. Couple of examples: Photographing college basketball indoors, I was able to shoot at ISO 1000 at f/4 with a 1/400s shutter. That's probably a tad slow, but it did freeze motion well and noise was well-controlled. You could certainly go higher on ISO. Photographing event speakers on stage indoors, even with some stage lighting, I was at ISO 2500 at f/2.8 with 1/160s shutter speed. That's the slowest I'd go. If it were an f/4 lens in that situation, I'd be probably be at ISO 4000 or 5000. If you're comfortable shooting in that range, save your money and go f/4. But if you're shooting events without flash, I'd go f/2.8. The GMII is incredible and a big step up from the original, just not as compact.
You're totally right, Chris! Got it a few weeks ago and it kicks a$$... Love the versatility! 👌
For sure! One of the few times we can say it's easy to carry around a 70-200.
i love mine ;) paired with a6700
Love it. Got some extra reach on the APS-C sensor too!
Love the look of this thing. Excited to see if it becomes more popular than it has in the past.
Yeah... I think it can be a hard sell at the price with the other options around it. If I didn't physically get my hands on it, I don't think I could be convinced LOL. Lot of competition around it.
Nice video man
Thank you!
Awesome video, thanks for posting. I have a question regarding the new 5th generation sensor. Are there any improvements besides the pixel count? Some youtubers mentioned that new sensor has more vivid and punchier colors versus 4th gen with more flat and muted output. I narrowed down to XS20 and XT50, but 26 megapixels is more than enough for me. On the other hand, if new sensor has batter output, I want it to get one. I plan to use Jpeg with film simulations.
I never used the previous sensor. But I’ve read similar things, especially that blues are punchier on the newer sensor. There are a lot of recipes already that are adjusted for the X100VI / XT50. I was attracted to the VI after seeing the colors from the V and haven’t been disappointed, so I think either of the last two generations of sensors will do you well. 40mp has been nice for cropping, especially when I want to crop into a landscape shot and make it 9x16 for social media, but even with 26mp there’s plenty of room to crop and still post a sharp image.
@@ChrisHagan Thanks for your reply Chris, appreciate it.
Great video! I have been using both Sony and Fuji for a few years now (A74/XT-5/X100vi). I agree that the Fuji AF is not on the same level as Sony, but if you haven’t already, do make sure that you are putting the camera In “boost” mode (in Menu - wrench icon>power management>performance>boost). This allows the camera to use the full functionality of the AF system and for some reason is not on by default out of the box.
Just put it in boost mode! Thanks for the tip. I haven't seen that anywhere else.
