There's irony in that statement...Jeremy spoke in class today...technically, Jeremy didn't say a thing, but the statement he made with the action spoke volumes.
It's such a tragedy that musicians only put out random hits for the radio now, rather than an entire album experience. Most of the albums that come out are just a collection of random songs, rather than the full beginning-to-end journey. It sucks.
I remember the controversy when this video came out. It was an important song and video that brought some awareness to mental health of the kids falling through the cracks. That's a time when they really started handing out the meds, so sad. Still mirrors current events now.
There is a flipside though, I don't think it's so black and white. When this song came out I lived in a small town in the middle of no where, and when this song came out there was 3 suicides by kids and it became a massive topic in town for parents to speak to their kids. Before the internet and cell phones, there's a good chance that this song may have been a kids only introduction to the concept of suicide. Did it trigger some deaths, while also saving others?
Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder wrote 'Jeremy' about bullying... he read about a boy in Texas named Jeremy Wade Delle who shot himself in front of his class after being bullied constantly... The video was made and released in 1992, directed by Mark Pellington... It was a powerful video showing a boy moving while everything is frozen around him and the scenes get darker as the song reaches a climax. MTV had to edit the video ... the suicide at the end... Another shot edited was the classroom giving a nazi salute during the Pledge of Allegiance - I think it was meant to show the oppression and miseducation that kids are subjected to in school. 'Jeremy' was a huge hit in 1992 and made Pearl Jam's 1991 debut album 'Ten' eventually sell 12 million copies in the US. The fact that 'Jeremy' became a hit after Nirvana broke big in 1991 was a huge shift in the rock scene... In 1990, the big rock bands had pop-heavy tunes... Slaughter had a huge hit w/ the party anthem 'Up all night' ... Firehouse had a huge ballad single 'Love of a lifetime' in 1991... Guns N' Roses was the biggest rock band and expected to do big business in 1991 w/ 2 albums of their brand of sleazy, bluesy hard rock - 'Use your illusion' I & II... No one expected a band like Nirvana to break big in 1991... and Pearl Jam was not promising commercially when 'Ten' was released that year. However, Nirvana had a huge hit w/ 'Smells like teen spirit'... their album 'Nevermind' went to #1, knocking off Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album on the charts... Suddenly, the demand grew for darker and heavier songs in 1992 w/ American youth being frustrated and disillusioned by the reality around them... They didn't wanna hear about partying and girls; they wanted something deep and heavy... and Nirvana was the band to bring it to them. On the heels of Nirvana, Pearl Jam were also from Seattle and 'Ten' was a dark rock record... their singles got on MTV and were successful in 1992... and 'Jeremy' was the song that sent the 'Ten' album to #2 on the US charts a year after its release. The best selling records abruptly shifted in 1992 from 'party rock' bands to heavy 'grunge rock' bands overnight... Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, White Zombie, Smashing Pumpkins... were suddenly popular and selling millions of records & on the charts... while 80's rock bands like Poison, Warrant, Bang Tango, Kix, Cinderella, Winger ... found their record sales decimated as their popularity fell abruptly & MTV + radio refused to play their singles anymore ... The early 90's grunge rock scene was a dark and passive attitude, and the music reflected those times...
From what I have read, they were not giving the Nazi salute - it is actually a recreation (deliberately due to the Nazi connection) of the US salute (the Bellamy salute) that used to be used during the Pledge of Allegiance, until the Nazis and Italian Fascists adopted a very similar salute.
@@Stan_sprinkle yeah but it’s lying. The song makes people think Jeremy’s parents hated and neglected him even though they loved him and actively tried to get him help
As someone who - along with other friends- saw his friend at age 17 shoot himself via the mouth through the skull, I can tell you, the image is way more disturbing than made out to be on television. He was bullied unnecessarily at high school (mid 90’s) and we thought we had his back. I do not blame anyone for not wanting to deal with the immediate aftermath, as well as the never ending memory of the event if they go through something similar. Shout out to Pearl Jam for bringing mental health to the mainstream around the same time. Shout out to all the loved ones left behind.
Hands down the best rock album of that era when grunge rock was huge. The album "Ten" (fun fact: the album was named after their favorite basketball player Mookie Blaylock's jersey number) is a masterpiece from beginning to end. Eddie Vedder had an amazing voice and his live performances were absolutely legendary. I remember seeing them live and he was hanging from the rafters and dropped down into the crowd. Dude was a stud.
After Pearl Jam’s 1991 Ten album, for personal reasons, the band didn’t make another music video until 1998. That music video is a powerful one like Jeremy was, Do The Evolution. Check that one out sometime. Also the animation is amazing in it.
The first time I ever got suspended from school was in elementary school for wearing the OG Pearl Jam "Choices" shirt that said "9 out 10 kids prefer crayons to guns" on the back and had a kid reaching for a gun instead of crayons on the front
I don’t think they were sued , and quite a few of the kids from Jeremy’s class came out later and said they liked the song. It helped with their grieving process.
You should do Hunger Strike by "Temple of the Dog" two singers both legendary vocalists one is the lead singer of Pearl Jam the other is my personal favorite vocalist of all time Chris Cornell lead singer of Soundgarden

It was a different world in 1991 when Pearl Jam released this song. I witnessed bullying on a daily basis in school. Adults, teachers, and school administrators considered it a right of passage. In some cases, bullying was encouraged. Some teachers even participated in the bullying. It was not something you'd ever hear anyone complain about. If you did, the bullying would only get worse. I've heard more than 1 teacher say that it builds character and it's harmless. It was a different time. It's sad that over 30 years later, we still deal with this as a society. I've tried to teach my kids that you should never judge someone because you don't know what's it's like to be them and walk in their shoes. Even kids that don't get bullied at school could be getting bullied at home. I knew kids like that as well. School was their sanctuary. Life is tough. There's no need to make it harder for anyone. I'm so glad Pearl Jam did this song. At the time, there was nothing else like it out there. Maybe there still isn't. I know it really helped me see things differently.
It's really sad nothing has changed. I just saw a friend of mine that I hadn't seen in years. He became a teacher, then a principal, and now is an administrator. I hadn't thought to ask him how he views how things are in schools today. I would have loved to have had a conversation with him about the current state of our education system. We hadn't seen each other in so long it was more about catching up. Maybe I'll get the chance to see him again. Children are our future. Providing them with the right environment to prosper is the most important thing we can do for them. Unfortunately, many are not finding today's school system to be that environment.
To further add to the tragedy, Trevor Wilson [the actor who played Jeremy in the video] died in 2016 by drowning in an accident....... RIP Jeremy and Trevor.......
Will you guys explore more Pearl Jam or Soundgarden / Audioslave? Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell were the champions of grunge in the 90s and 2000's. Timeless music
I was walking out of work to my car at a grocery store in Worcester, MA when I was 17 and kicked a bag from Strawberries Music. In it was a brand new copy of Pearl Jam’s “Ten” on cassette. This album was one of a handful that at that point in time that changed things. Hip hop was on top of the world until grunge hit the scene and these guys are part of the big 4. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Nirvana. As someone who has always listened to a huge variety in music I love the reaction scene and how access to music, stories behind it, recommendations, and all that have allowed the word to spread. I envy the people who are hearing this stuff for the first time.
I remember this Album coming out and falling in love with Veder's voice. Can't stand Nirvana but Pearl Jam is one of my favorite bands from back in the day. This song, Black, Last Kiss...all bangers. His work with Temple of the Dog is amazing too. The 90's had such great music, Check out The Verve Pipe "The Freshman" another classic 90's hit a ton of people forget.
Great reaction to Jeremy from Pearl Jam and yes this song is based on a true story about a young man who was bullied from class mates and treated not so well from his parents so he desired there was only one way to end the madness he shot himself in front of his class only taking his own life . Leaving the question who could they his teachers or friends and parents could have done definitely to help?.
At some point or another, we were all "Jeremy". Going through shit. Depressed, bullied, ignored, etc. In 4th grade I was Jeremy when he "hit him with a surprise left" and attacked the teacher. I was fed up. My dad was abusive, mom was always working, and was bullied. So I snapped. I'm thankful I good people through out my life that guided me back in the right direction.
oh man seeing this video is gonna make me cry. i only ever heard this song as a kid with my dad explaining the suicide part. hits soo much different when i can understand all the lyrics
This was at my high school in front of my english teacher. She had to change classrooms but didn't stop teaching. I graduated a few years after this song. Class of 2000
I'm really glad u did the video, u might not have connected what the lyrics were about without it. It's a very sad song when u realize what the meaning of it is about. I think this song was probably the first to bring into light bullying and the damage it can cause. I'm a huge EM' fan and I find it ironic that people would've probably tried to cancel him or make a huge uproar if he had tried to make a song like this or even his sing "Darkness" back then and yet a rock band does and no one really has an issue with it.
Yes based on a true story. I can't hardly watch this video anymore because of what happened here in Oxford Michigan where the kid brought a weapon into school and eliminated four people and injured several others I think it was about a year ago 😭😞
I remember when the song and video came out in the 90s. We weren't allowed to play It in school. You would get sent home and the tape would be Confiscated by the school and destroyed The radio didn't play It until after hours. And I had to buy the cassette tape behind my Parents back.
Let me guess another Ashley request? haha Good song another nostalgia song from high school! Can we just go back and live out our days in the mid 90s? pleeeeease! Damnit!
You’re taking me back to high school for this one! I’m a 30+ year card carrying member of the Grunge Era! This song came out when I was 16 years old. The song is an about a boy who was bullied at home and at school and eventually walked into his class and committed suicide. I believe it took place in Texas.
Jeremy was a young man that was very abused. This story about him is only miles up the road from me. I remember it as yesterday. I had no problem with Eddie Vedder writing the words to this song because so many kids have died from the abuse, and they still are not protected to this day
I bought this CD when it came out Eddie Vedder wanted to send a message with the album Ten songs Alive is about Eddies childhood and Why Go is about mental health…he is amazing! I was younger then now I’m a therapist
I should mention that teenage suicide was a HUGE problem in the 90's. At least that's what we were told in media. "Heathers" was a movie where they killed their frenemies & hid it by playing it off fake suicide notes. "Pump Up the Volume" had kids calling a guy because they are so far on the edge they were suicidal. What Mr. Wade did was public, then Pearl Jam took his story, threw in their own life stories about bullying/suicidal ideation, and made the most impactful PSA of the immediate aftermath...and maybe what a person who is deeply depressed feels...regardless of how much love and care their family gives them. Music can pull you away from the darkside, and I feel like this video gives you a better understanding of that kids' mindset. It's not going to make sense all the time. Mental illness doesn't.
This same thing happened at my high school in 1987. I did not know the boy, Karl Tramer Jr, he was a year behind me, however he also brought a gun into school and shot himself in front of my prior English teacher, as the bell rang. We were all sent outside in a "fire drill." As the hours passed, the "story" started to circulate. Only 4 years later, while at college, this song/album came out. It hit very hard, although I didn't know him, it affected me and my thoughts of his family and my teacher and his classmates that tried to help him until the EMT arrived. He passed away the next day. That is terrible enough, but it's so scary now that people assume it would end with a school mass shooting. 😢
People wonder why us old folks feel nostalgic about older tunes. Lyrics with meaning, that hit you so hard. This whole album was amazing. I see you've done black as well... good choice.
I’m a lot older, so I know this might surprise some people. This song came out before school shootings were even a thing. Looking at it now you would think that’s the way it was going to go. This song came out I believe 1991. Columbine shooting happened in 1999.
bullying is a culture in America...it will always happen in the future...especially this is America dude, you can buy anything here including weapons...when the victim has had enough and explodes...boom, he will show something.
Eddie Vedder wrote the lyrics after reading the couple of lines mentioning this tragedy. A life reduced to the few sentences that you see at the opening of the video... So incredibly sad.
definitely true story, also Eddie said on an interview it reminded him when he bullied a kid in school and that kid brought a gun to the class next to him!
This came out a few years after the Columbine massacre, which in itself kicked off the whole long series of mass murders in schools and other public places. I remember when this song came out, it's like Pearl Jam had their finger on the pulse of the Spirit of the times. It like marked a shift in the American way.
"The song takes its main inspiration from a newspaper article about a 15-year-old boy named Jeremy Wade Delle from Richardson, Texas, who shot himself in front of his teacher and his second-period English class of 30 students on the morning of January 8, 1991."
Same thing happened in my high school in 1989 up in Michigan. Kid did it in the middle of class in front of everyone with his dad's .45. They didn't even send us home. We just had to use another room that day.
Jeremy the song caught back lash from people across America even though it was recorded and released prior to the event that happend with a child named Jeremy.
The real Jeremy lost his life about 3 miles from where I live now (albeit 9 years before I moved here). Every once in a while, I run across someone who went to school with him.
To this day all MTV channels absolutely refuse to play the enedited video of this song. The original video makes it look like Jeremy committed mass murder because while it's obvious that Jeremy pulls out a gun (the original never shows the gun at all) you no longer see Jeremy at all while of the classmates are covered in blood. Eddie Vedder was furious about the way MTV butchered the video without asking or even telling Pearl Jam. Saw these guys live during the height of their popularity and they were amazing. When Vedder heard tickets were going for between 50 and 100 bucks he threatened to cancel the show if tickets were more than 25 bucks.
This song will always hit like a punch to the gut once you realize just how dark the seemingly innocent phrase “Jeremy spoke in class today” is.
I've always felt that "Try to erase this from the blackboard" hits even harder.
Actions speak louder than words.
There's irony in that statement...Jeremy spoke in class today...technically, Jeremy didn't say a thing, but the statement he made with the action spoke volumes.

Please Do Porch MTV Unplugged . FUNNY FACTS : They have to stay on their tool or they get sue 😮. 😂😂
This video never doesn't hit like a brick.
*This won MTVs Video of the Year*
Every song on that album is a Banger!!

It's Magical and Really Powerful.....

This always reminds me of that Degrassi episode. IYKYK
Always loved me some
Pearl Jam! Great song great reactors no complaints life is bueno! God! Is Good!
PJ/Eddie is/was great with their music highlighting the heartfelt lyrics. Society is my favorite of all but I'm a loner.
Jeremy spoke in class today, loud and clear
That's the first time I saw the "gun in his mouth" version. I always saw him dropping his right arm but not actually seeing the gun.
The truly horrific thing is that Jeremy did this in 1991! Over 30 years ago and we still have problems like this in our schools. What are we doing?
Bullying is horrible.
Even Flow(1st) and (jeremy)2nd) ,changed my life forever. Gen x grunge kid for life 🤘🫶
Still get goosebumps where I hear this!!!!
Definitely a true story. I remember it well. I'm from Dallas. This happened in a city North Of Dallas where I'm from.
If you arent ready for this, it truly is a shock to the system.
Yes, true story. Jeremy's parents were not happy that PJ made a song about it.
So incredibly sad.
definitely true story, also Eddie said on an interview it reminded him when he bullied a kid in school and that kid brought a gun to the class next to him!
not only a true story but a very common story in the 90s. Happened a LOT
imho, the best Grunge Band that time and for me personally forever. Nirvana never had that deepnes in everey Song like Pearl Jam.
This came out a few years after the Columbine massacre, which in itself kicked off the whole long series of mass murders in schools and other public places. I remember when this song came out, it's like Pearl Jam had their finger on the pulse of the Spirit of the times. It like marked a shift in the American way.
This song is based on a news article Vedder read about a boy name "Jeremy" who killed himself in front of the classroom.
Be kind to each other folks. That’s the lesson here
Watch the mtv unplugged set thay pearl jam did. Jeremy black and even flow. Really good live versions of 3 of their greatest songs.
Hey guys!! Beautyfull and terrifin at the same time . Thanks. Greettings from Argentina
My sons name is Jeremy, born right before this came out… I usually never ever listen to this but I wanna see this reaction…. 🤘😢
saw in a dream a sad little boy waiting at the window for his parents to return in a loveless, dark house...
"The song takes its main inspiration from a newspaper article about a 15-year-old boy named Jeremy Wade Delle from Richardson, Texas, who shot himself in front of his teacher and his second-period English class of 30 students on the morning of January 8, 1991."
RIP Jeremy, cant believe its been over 30 years
He wanted the class to feel his pain forever.
Same thing happened in my high school in 1989 up in Michigan. Kid did it in the middle of class in front of everyone with his dad's .45. They didn't even send us home. We just had to use another room that day.
😢
Jeremy the song caught back lash from people across America even though it was recorded and released prior to the event that happend with a child named Jeremy.
Beautiful powerful song. This was played so much on mtv back in the day
Just imagine getting the phone call that your son shot himself during class. Wow. Chills.
I love how this dude and Katy Perry react to music.
Great song about a horrible tragedy. Still messes with my mind.😶
Love your reactions.. I never knew Pearl Jam got sued for that
This song is even more relevant nowadays, considering all the mass shootings and school shootings...
Try to erase this from the blackboard.... lyrical genius!
I understand their hurt completely but it did raise awareness of even suicide.
The boy who played "Jeremy" in this video, Trevor Wilson, drowned in 2016 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The real Jeremy lost his life about 3 miles from where I live now (albeit 9 years before I moved here). Every once in a while, I run across someone who went to school with him.
One of my favourite Pearl Jam songs is 'nothing as it seems ' live at pinkpop 2002 i think. Sorry its Nurnberg in 2000
To this day all MTV channels absolutely refuse to play the enedited video of this song.
I related WAY too much to this song growing up.
Ten is the best album of all time.
Pearl jam is the best band of their generation (2nd place Tool). 🔥🔥🔥
Yes. this absolutely happened
this song is like KUNG FU kick ass!
Knowing that. Rewatched the video.
