Helping my Girlfriend Overcome Her Fear of Jumps

- Hailey finds Jumping Scary. We're helping Hailey Clear the MTB Jumps on a Blue Jump Trail at Thunder Mountain Bike Park. Hailey is a good technical Mountain biker, but when it comes to Jumping she finds jumps rather intimidating. She has no problem with smaller jumps, but when it comes to medium size jumps and bigger, tends to case them.

Thank you, everyone, for the Birthday wishes and for cheering me on!! Phil was right, it does make me one happy chick! Shred on!🤘
Hailey Sarausky Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday Hailey...you are sweet!
Happy birthday awesome job jumps are not my strong suit either.
Happy birthday Hailey! Huuiiiii 😅
Happy birthday!
The mental recovery is so much harder than the physical one. So many of us have gone thru that. Way to be patient Phil and let her progress at her own speed.
You're absolutley right. I broke my tibia and fibula that meant 6 months without walk. Sad and grey mental days for me.
I agree with you on this, I broke my femur in whistler, I was going around a berm and I hit a big rock in the dirt and it chucked me off the back side of the berm and I went down a 70 degree incline and smashed my leg on a log and broke my femur, I was stuck down there for 15 minutes before anyone heard me yelling... it took me a total of about two years to feel comfortable riding downhill again (physically), but I was mentally recovering for much much longer, still to this day I don't ride nearly as fast as i used to, nor do I hit berms as fast and hard as i used to.
@@toptwitchclipz7928 it ok
Old thread but I just snapped my collar bone in 3 spots a couple days ago, im getting surgery on Wednesday. but I sent her a little to hard on a 25 foot table, bikes alright but I need a little work
Yeah absolutely I had a huge crash and I didn't get on my bike for just under a year it was only because my friend took me to a bike park where I fully mentally recovered its all about the attitude if I die tomorrow would I be happy?
Happy birthday Hailey! 🥳
BCpov I love finding famous RUclipsrs hiding in the comment sections.
Hi bcpov I watch you all the time
Fred Mason me to
I love her saying 'wee' over all the jumps. I also am known the say wee or at least laugh.
Me too😂
Where does she say that?
I always laugh 😂. Everybody has their thing
I'm more at the phase where I say oh shit half the time
rushthezeppelin same, or I just don’t say anything
I love the part: "Our relationship is more important than progression" Lol!
Looking at those pics from before the injury I hadn't realised how good she "was", taking that huge step down like a boss in the DH days then scared of the little one on that trail.
She looked so nervous and timid on the bike after.
Great vid on building the confidence and regaining the skills that still lurk.
For sure. That drop is a pretty intense feature, but from the videos that we've seen on Phil's channel I thought that she was a roadie who Phil was dragging to the mountain. Different perspective for sure!
Agreed. She'll outride Phil when she goes full Super Saiyan on her new bike.
I love this channel. Two people with unique voices. Two people with long hair. Two amazingly talented people. I love your hard work so keep it up! And GO HAILEY! Happy birthday
This is the most relatable skills with Phil video I’ve seen in a long time she’s kicking ass hell yeah happy birthday
Awww Phil.. I really liked everything about this video. Its so nice to hear about Hailey and how you two met. Shes cool! Sweet!
She's been in a bunch of my videos, but I've realized that I've never explained her story, so I thought it'd be worth telling at least part of it.
This is what it’s all about, progression sessions!!
Well done Hailey and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
I camd over my fear of jumps when I’d just think of how proud I would be when I complete a jump
Evii D3vil same
Seeing how hard she used to ride and how many steps back she had to go hurt my heart. I recently gave up BMX because of a broken elbow and am taking up mountain biking as a replacement. I love just riding around new trails but it's frustrating to struggle on some of the basics. Rock hops, root rolls, small jumps, etc.
To be honest, she’s a much better rider now. In the past she was more of a riskier rider. These days she’s much more cautious which means slower progress but less time off the bike due to injuries. Today, we rode some technical trails that she would not do before she got injured. Jumping has just been something that’s been outside her comfort zone.
@@SkillsWithPhil Yeah it's super important. It's the opposite with me. I can't wait to do some jumps on the MTB but technical trails just give my brain pause. Especially any technical incline, a single mistake and you are walking up lol
Happy birthday and great job! I'm terrified of rocky technical stuff myself and understand the mental block that keeps us from tackling things we know we are skilled to do. You two are so rad and I've gained so much from watching these videos from the last several years! Thank you!
Hailey's little "whee!"s are officially the cutest possible thing.
Dude watching her progression is so awesome! I was legitimately getting excited when she would clear a new jump. So AWESOME!!
Happy birthday Hailey! It's entertaining to sit back on the couch and watch Phil do some otherworldly shredding, but it makes me want to get on my bike and go ride when I see someone closer to my skill level progressing. Thanks for bringing that perspective to this channel!
Can appreciate this kind of video, I'm doing something similar with my wife at the moment, but with just the trails rather than jumps, we are slowly working our way through red route obstacles and making progress every ride, definitely alot of encouraging others to ride! stick at it Hailey, you're doing amazing!
I showed this video to my girlfriend and she loved your approach to motivate Hailey and her progress of course. Thanks for great inspiration!
Happy birthday gorgeous Hailey, from New Zealand. What an awesome vid Phil. Was so proud of the way you encouraged her and had her back and sooo stoked at her progress. Helped me a lot. Thank you!
Happy Birthday Hailey! I did a few laps with you, Phil, and a couple of your friends on Flo at Cady Hill last summer. So great to see your confidence growing in tech and your jumps getting higher and longer! Inspiring for us all!
So fun watching you two ride - go Hailey!! Mega progress. Thanks for the inspiration to get back out on the bike STAT. OH, and HAPPY FREAKIN BIRTHDAY HAILEY!!! You rock.
Thank you, Hannah! I'm totally looking forward to when you get back out on a bike, it will be a rad day for sure! Also, Congrats on being officially cancer-free, you're a badass!
Love your vids phil...love the in and out introduction and commentary and it's always super nice to see riders help riders out regardless of relationship status....hayley well done on sticking at it....👏👏
Man, I have so much respect and sympathy for Hailey. I had been in a similar position where she was before with my motocross riding. Because of a bad crash and injury I went from being one of the fastest kids in the state to the slowest of my classes. It took me years to get back to fighting shape and just this year I finally got a 1st place Championship in one of my classes. So I just wanna say happy birthday to Hailey and here’s to her progression 🤘🏻I know she can do awesome shredding
Wow. Phil, this is some of your best work. This was great to watch and you two are the finest kind.
New to the channel but i am so happy to see the love and support you have been giving her that a true man and boyfriend. Happy birthday Hailey and congrats on all the progress you've made
Great work Hailey. I'm sitting here saying YES!!! every time you clear another jump. Seeing your progress has me stoked to get out and make some progress of my own. My favorite SWP video so far.
Thanks Kenny. I know a lot of people enjoy watching my riding but I know Hailey’s riding and struggles are a lot more relatable. I think she really helps keeps things in perspective. She (myself as-well) get really happy when people take the time to leave a nice comment :)
Girl I am so happy for you! You are awesome and you keep hitting those jumps! It’s amazing to have someone who is an amazing support system and willing to be patient. You are extremely lucky and talented! You go girl! And Happy Bithday!
Whether your jumping forthill or gronk progression is progression and it’s awesome to see! Happy bday girl!...nice meetin u that day, team gt was in full force!💯🙌🏻 keep up the progression it’s awesome to see!
I love you Phil and Hailey! you really make me feel happy of you two and really impatient to ride more and simply enjoy it. Thanks for all your work. A little yesterday too: Happy birthday!!! Have a wonderful time!
You two make such an inspirational couple! Thank you, Phil and Hailey, for being so awesome and sharing some of your lives with us.
Hailey, that was quite a huge progress. Keep it fun and crush it!
Happy Birthday for starters! Secondly I would probably look like a fool to others but I am siting here fist pumping the air and i cant stop smiling on how good this is!!! Great Job Hailey!!
Happy belated birthday Hailey! You're doing really well on Gronk. Phil you are the man! I work at Mountain Creek and finally took advantage of the bike park this summer. Your videos have motivated me and helped my progression in many ways. I tried to get my girlfriend on the trails but she was terrified to try it. I am going to show her this video. I want her to see that its okay to start small and work your way up. Happy Thanksgiving!
So awesome for Hailey! Progression while having fun is the key and happy birthday to Hailey! I just watched it again, her attitude is so great "we'll see what the boss says". I love riding with my wife; not the fastest rides or the nastiest terrain but some of the most fun rides for sure.
On a side note, it was helpful for me to see the story about Hailey's injury as I had a bad crash this summer. On 8/10/19 I went out for an early morning (5:30AM) ride on my local trails that i’d ridden many, many times. I was about 5 miles into what was supposed to be 12-14 mile when I crashed. It was a minor crash, in fact, other than the main issue (which i’ll get to) you wouldn’t know i’d crashed to look at me; no bruises, abrasions, no dirt on me anywhere. I must have lost focus going into a minor downhill left hand corner and my front tire went up over the small berm; riding it out was not an option due to a fast approaching tree so I dismounted, like i’d done probably hundreds of times over the last 12-13 seasons but this time was different.
As I was dismounting I felt my foot hit the ground and, even with earbuds in, heard a sound like a broomstick being snapped over your thigh. I laid face down for a few minutes saying really bad things and when I rolled over my left leg was in front of me but my foot was off to the left and there was a large protrusion in my sock. I knew right away I had a tib/fib FX and I was alone, at 7AM on a Saturday and when I pulled out my phone I had no service…It only took a few minutes to figure out that I had to do something with my foot, at this point the bone had not broken through the skin and I knew that if it did shock, bleeding, infection, possible loss of foot were all in play as I knew it would be some time before somebody found me. Ironically, though I was in the woods, looking around found no suitable sticks to make a splint with so I dragged myself about 10 yards down the trail on my butt with my leg held up and found two sticks but my bike shoes (BOA) have no laces.
I took out the pruning shears from my hydration pack that I use all summer for as-needed face slapper maintenance, cut the straps off my hydration pack and straightened my foot out, pushed the bone back and put the splint on. I then yelled for help for 3.5 hours before somebody found me. My wife had just started looking for me (i always tell here where I am and what time to expect me and she rides those trails as well) when I was being taken out of the woods by EMS. I ended up with a displaced tib/fib fracture and had two plates (one inside my leg on Tibia and one on the outside on the Fibula) with 19 screws. It was 4 weeks before even light toe touch weight bearing with crutches and then I got cellulitis the day before I started PT; this pushed me back two weeks.
After a couple of weeks of PT I started having a lot of pain in the outside of my ankle where the plate ends and limited range of motion in my ankle (which makes no sense as the break was well above the ankle). So at 9 weeks post-op I had to have the outer plate/screws removed, my ankle joint scraped out and a bone biopsy to make sure that the infection is gone; it was not and i I had another week of antibiotics and all the fun that comes with them.
I now have an incision that won't fully heal but i'm doing PT anyway and my range of motion is still significantly limited but Hailey's story gives me hope and makes me realize that I need to focus on what I can do and not on what I can't do. I'm hoping to get back to riding, hiking, fishing, etc soon but it will still be some time i'm sure. Thanks for the great content and allowing us all to live a little bit through the two of you. Sorry for the wall of text.
Outstanding progress Hailey! Happy Birthday!
Great channel guys! Totally like the coaching, especially can be risky and difficult to try and help someone you care about. Hailey just leveled up! 👊🏼
Phil I’ve been a follower for quite some time and came across this video. I love to ride but my no means have your skill set however watching your coach Hailey was awesome to watch! The progression was amazing! Great video
happy birthday, Hailey. I can relate, I tore my Achilles several years ago and it took me a long time to get back into my old self again riding more aggressively. you are doing fantastic keep up the good work and love riding more carefreely again all the best
Dude i LOVE that you are throwing in all these videos about how you guys "feel" about your mentality and through process - and that your "relationship is more important then progression... " Wow man.. nothing's true'r. I have some mad respect for your patience and ability to teach people. ~Subscriber for life~
great job to you both. hailey for your persistence and phil for encouragement with such an easy going attitude and not pushing too hard which can be very easy to do.
One of your best videos. Great combination of story telling and editing. And Hailey is a badass on the bike. Happy birthday to her.
Nice work Hailey and congrats on the huge progress. Happy Birthday! Great Vid. This Inspires me to go out and practice jumping.
this was awesome ! your videos always have the best vibes and always make me want to go for a ride. Keep shredding you two
Awesome job and happy late Birthday Hailey! I also suffered a catastrophic ankle injury a few years ago, so I COMPLETELY understand the mental roadblock. Something that seems so simple can be absolutely horrifying. To make that much progress in one day is HUGE, so congratulations! You so totally got this!!!
You got a great guy who clearly loves you, and y'all are right. Recovery is about progression and a journey. No rush and have fun. :)
Awesome work Hailey! Love the excitement in your voice as she clears the jumps...
wow! New to mountain biking, I have always been a road bike guy. Your videos are way fun to watch and just make me want to get out there even more, Thanks Phil and Hailey
Awesome video man, really enjoyed this one! I’ve had the same injury and know how hard it is to coms back from!!
Happy belated, Hailey! Great work! Pumped to see Doug Henry out there shredding. An inspiration for so many reasons.
Fun seeing her get closer and closer to the landing slope each time. Keep progressing and enter the ‘no case zone’.
Bro!!! I totally loved this video, loved the way you told the story, it really sucked me in. Great job man!!
Progression is so great! Especially when we learn to look past fear, imagine the ideal outcomes, and have fun while learning👍🏽 Nice Work! Happy Birthday Hailey🎂🙌🏽😎
Much respect to you Hailey! Such a devastating injury is always difficult to recover from. Many happy wishes and hope you fully enjoy your new found freedom!
Happy B-Day Hailey! Great video! So many of us run into the same situation. For me it was 3 busted ribs, and getting back to where I was has been a struggle. We all fall, it's a matter of getting back up, which isn't always easy. Hell, trying to progress, even without an injury, can be intimidating. Side note from an old fart who's been happily married over 25 years; I love watching you two together. You have what it takes for the long haul. My wife & I started out as friends (over 30 years ago), & we're still best friends. Keep on rockin', it's a groovy thing!! :)
I simply love to see how supportive you are. Than does not just say a lot about you, but also about your relationship. And Hailey I found you so brave. Mental heeling takes time. You're doing great! Glad for such good role models. :D
I know this is an older video, but i was rooting for her the whole time. My wife and i watched this together and SHE loved watching Hailey ride. Please do more of this tandem ridding!!!
Happy birthday Hailey and you're absolutely killing it! You are super inspirational to me as I too shattered my ankle and broke my fibula! Keep shredding!
Hey Phil - first great job remembering her birthday ;-), second great job being such a patient coach and supporter. I am afraid of heights and have issues with taking air but I want it so bad. I wish I had a coach that would do this for me all day. Thanks also for all your tutorial videos.
Wow! That progression is really impressive, and I also didn't realize how good Hailey is at tech! Good job!
Sooo cool seeing Haley progress so much. Good job you two. Happy Birthday Haley!!!
Happy birthday hailey!!!! And keep shredding you two, loving the vids your putting out lately 🤘🙌
This was a great video, thank youguys for sharing this! I can relate from being in a car accident at the beginning of this year and have sustained a minor back injury, which has mentally got a hold on me from how I am used to riding. I see it's going to be repetitive motions, patience, and baby steps. Thanks again, stay safe, progress and shred on!
Really enjoyable to watch you both together and amazing progress! Go get it!
Happy Bday Hailey! Thay was such a great episode of Skills with Phil, I was smiling the whole time, great progress. Wish I had Phil coaching me over jumps! Hope you don't mind if I steal "get it get it get it" next time I'm facing a drop that scares the @#$% out of me (the majority of them)
Hailey has given me the desire to go mountain bike riding. I am so glad you include her riding on your videos.
Your positive attitude is very addicting, and it shows through her smiles
So nice to see the happiness of progression, nice work Hailey!
Happy Birthday Hailey!! You never stopped smiling the whole time with your broken leg, great spirt!! Nice work, love what the two of you are doing!
Thanks, Paul!! I had a pretty rad team to keep my spirits up! Still talk about team moments, even to this day. I hope the injury you got at Snowshoe is all healed up!
All healthy and back on the bike!! Good times with loco!
You two just make me smile! I hope you cherish the relationship you have because its really rare. Way to go Hailey. You're a true legend...Yewwwwwww!!!!!!
Great video! Happy birthday Hailey! Good video to help with my own jump progression.
Thanks for this video. It’s almost the same case as me. When you injure yourself from a crash, all confidence goes down the drain. Physically, you will get better in time but the mental block is a little bit difficult to overcome. Atleast this vid shows its possible.
Happy Birthday Hailey!!! Great job with your progression. I love how supportive you guys are of each other. 💕🤘🏻
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAILEY!!!!! I'm at about the same biking level as you and seeing you progress makes me want to go out and progress myself!!! I hope that I get to ride with you and Phil one day!!
3:36 I'm so glad I reached this video haha! I have a big problem with voice over recording and having to use the bedroom, blankets all over, etc. This solution of yours seems pretty good! The sound on the narration is perfect. Cheers Phil and Hailey!
Phil, you're the absolute G. This video has been instrumental to my own development, as like Hayley, I've struggled with personal demons to safety tap my brakes before any lip, or jump face out of habit. Awesome progression 💪
Keep em coming Phil
Yes Phil,so sick, love to see Hailey progressing!! Keep up the awesome work you two!
Happy birthday! You did fantastic on this one. Much improvement! Phil, great job encouraging her! Another great video. I could watch skills with phil on the daily!
That was awesome, Phil! Hailey surely was affected by her injury. Injury sucks... She'll clear all the jumps even in A line in the future! One ride and she progressed so fast!
Speaking of A Line, Yuka's progression was also inspiring to watch...
Happy Birthday Hailey! Really cool looking bike and nice progression on the jumps, it's definitely an area I need to improve on.
This was awesome and inspiring - great work Hailey and Phil!
Beautiful video 😀 really nice to see a couple so connected!!! Well done guys
Happy Birthday Hailey and well done on the progress in this video, that was RAD!! Phil, you're a good coach too!!
freakin hell. That's what I call PROGRESS! Big shoutout. You reached the next level! And happy birthday :)
Loved it, I'd like to see more of Hailey on the channel, it's awesome to have a female model to look up to. And happy birthday!
I LOVE that you took the time to do this. I’ve been timid on bigger features since always, but more so after I broke my arm at Highland a couple of years ago (my husband handed on Hellion- shockingly we still ride together haha). This video was so helpful. I can’t wait to also make the landings every time on Gronk. Thanks for making this and I’d love to see more women on bikes in your videos.
Congratulations 🎊🎉 to Haley on her B'day 🎂 and her progression on the bike 🤘😎 as always very cool video, thanks for sharing it 👍
Yay Hailey!! Nice work, and Happy Birthday . You are inspiring to watch!
Great viddy Phil! Awesome job Hailey! Wish I could clear stuff. Happy belated birthday!!
What a talent, she has the best coach in the business, such a great video to see progression at its best, Phil amnd Hailey, so proud of you. Happy Birthday too
Way to go Hailey, and Happy Birthday (for a few days ago)
After the biggest injury of my life back in July this year im still not quite ready to get back on the bike physically but mentally im even further away, Ive crashed my brains out in all sorts of sports and broken too many bones over the last 44years but this one has really put the wind up me so I can totally relate to how a serious injury can play havoc with your confidence.
I'm currently healing some broken bones after a crash and this video really got me excited to get up on the bike and make progress and have fun. Happy birthday Hailey!
Love this concept - "coaching video series" watch me help another rider go to the next level, you're on to something huge Phil! Happy Birthday Hailey!
HBD !!! The “I did it!” after the tech was pure joy ! Hailey u rock ! 👊
I found myself verbally cheering Haily on! "Go Haily Go Haily Go!!!"
Great job Hailey! Gronk IMHO is the single best trail to develop jumping skills, spend a day on Gronk and when you leave your skill set is at a new level.
Thank you for sharing your confidence, some of US need it to get over our jumps too
Hailey must have "smooth" in her DNA, rides like an effortless athlete. That never goes away. (happy birthday)
That was fantastic! Great progression and coaching/support.
Many Happy returns Hailey, enjoying watching you progress. think sessioning lower speed small steeper dirt jumps might help.
Great video and inspiration to go work on my jumping.
Happy birthday, Hailey!
Well done Hailey! & Happy birthday for yesterday (it's midday on the 18th in Australia) and massive congrats on the progression! Good Job Phil with the patient tuition! 🤘👊
You're a very patient and positive coach, Phil. Nice vid.
I know this is an old video but rock on hailey. I’m too scared to try jumps at all so I’m living vicariously through you two on these videos
