      1. Box style swing arm is there in Re Thunderbird here in India
      2. The country enforced Euro IV norms way back in April 2017
      3. The side stand sensor is offered too.
So it is technically and factually wrong to say RE doesn't provide these in India

What!! I work at Enfield (India) and I can assure you all the bikes manufactured are the same. Rarely some minor adjustments are made to fit the country's requirement - nothing significant.
RE's are expensive in western countries due to auto duties, just like Harley and Vulcan bikes in India.
Everything pretty much is exported from Chennai.

    • @mrpetit2
      @mrpetit2 4 года назад +2

Then why won't RE give an EU CoC for an indian domestic market bike?
Could also be software tuning or lighing etc.
The little changes probably aren't representative for the cost, but these bikes aren't sold in EU/USA etc in the quantities that they are sold in india, so maintaining a dealer network, advertisement costs etc is also way more expensive. And of course life is way more expensive here so profit margins have to be higher too.

The changes he pointed out are mostly universal for the Euro5 and BS6 (new Indian emission standard) models. They also include a rear disc brake and ABS. Yes export models have small differences, but that doesn’t account for the significant cost difference overseas. The new 650 Interceptor is the same in every country save for very insignificant differences like turn signal shape or sari guards. It’s $5800 in the US and $3500 in India. The Indian market also has a few more basic domestic models (usually 350cc) that are meant to be very affordable for the home market and aren’t like the more expensive models that are exported as well as sold domestically. BS6 is changing much of that now and I don’t know if those models will still be available by a “grandfather” standard, forced to be updated, or discontinued. Motorcycles have to be affordable in India because of how many are sold every year and the median annual income is about $3200. Import taxes are very high so more and more motorcycle companies are manufacturing in India to save cost for that market and then also export those models. The KTM 390 and BMW 310 are examples. That still doesn’t explain why once in the US and Europe the prices jump significantly. The truth is that because of their low production cost they can mark up the price and still be significantly less expensive than Japanese and European motorcycles. Import taxes are also part of the price increase. That said, I can’t really complain about the price of the new 650 for what you’re getting, especially compared to everything else on the market that is significantly more expensive. The Bullet/Classic 500’s are a bit overpriced but they are getting another significant redesign and that’s why they’re not available currently overseas.

I think those design differences are very minor compared to the cost difference, companies just price their products different depending on the market and how much they can get away with charging. One notorious example is textbooks, where in a western country like NZ the book would be $100 + , but the Indian edition would be a fraction of the cost. Even digital products where the marginal cost is basically zero (such as video games etc), are charged at widely different prices in different markets.

Very informative, thank you! Having recently bought a battle green Classic 500 in the US, it is interesting to see how the markets differ and require adjustments to the configurations of the bikes. The actual details don't seem to add up to the price differences but if buyers are willing to pay the premium for minimal equipment "upgrades", then that is what will happen. The market will dictate pricing and these bikes fit a lot of needs across the spectrum. It is my "novelty bike", being set up to look like a WWII Army courier bike, and not intending to do any serious long distance riding. The highway speeds here are just too high for it. That's where my BMW R1200RT really shines. Suit the bike to the mission. I do find the RE puts a grin on my face every time I ride it!

My dad had a RE 1959 model. It was always having issues, me and my dad worked cleaning carburetor, spark plugs, battery issues, i even replaced piston rings, chain adjustment...oh boy you name it, there will be some issue. But yet, he loved that bike. He sold it couple of months back before he passed away in 2018.
Not sure the new redesigned RE fixed those issues.

I have a BS4 compliant Classic 500 and it has the side stand sensor. And the REs coming out now has ABS and a few other changes and there is not a huge hike in prices. Definitely no three-fold increase. I think the biggest reason for the increased price must be import taxes and other such charges.

the RE retail price difference do not come from different specs. The importers adjust the prices to the current market value to maximize profit. In India, the METEOR and INTERCEPTOR are about 2000 € each. In Europe, the METEOR costs 4000 € retail and the Interceptor costs 7000 €. The Interceptor would be fair priced at 4500 € but the customers are ready to pay more for it. That easy.

The differences that you mentioned, at the manufacturers level, might add a $50 or $60 dollars to the cost but certainly wouldn’t result in an end product that costs two or three times as much. For instance once you’ve established a production line on a square tube swing arm compared to a round one, the difference is literally pennies if anything at all. Same thing with a different gas cap or even better quality paint. I suspect the price difference has more to do with import tariffs and most importantly, the price of the competition. There’s even a good price difference between a US bike and a Canadian bike, more so than just the duty and exchange would warrant. They are both export market machines so should have the same quality enhancements

In my home town. Royal Enfield failed to support the Dealer with needed replacement parts. And they failed to advertis , most people didn't know Royal Enfield was in production much less available for sale. I needed a new speedo drive gear , it had split on the bottom side from the end plug back. The new part was also split in the same location. We looked at all the new bikes in the store several also had broken drive gear housing. It required several attempts to get a good one.
After a couple years of frustration the Dealer sent everything he had back to Royal Enfield's distribution center. So now I have a bike with no dealer support. I have owned and repaired motorcycles since 1964 and worked in a motorcycle dealer ship. So it is not a big problem for me. Import tax, customs duty and other charges will always increase imported products 3x it's value. Most of the bicycles in abroad are designed in abroad, but manufactured in India and china for cheaper price. They are imported as spares and only assembling is done in abroad. But government will not charge taxes high, because they are spares. Government exists for corporates not for people.
