I remember that match because I was at the match. In my opinion the fans were booing NOT because Peter Crouch was coming on but because Shaun Wright Philips was being taken off. He (SWP) had had very good game up to that point, making several great attacking runs down the left wing. The fans were just expressing their dismay that he was being replaced.

Crazy part is he’s more attractive and way more skilled than 99% of footballers I’ve seen from any country in the world during any year. While he may have started out a bit awkward, he grew into a damn beautiful man. If I was from England and we had the tallest player on our team and he made it to the national team even, I would have been ecstatic. I believe that Canadians have always been able to ignore physical appearance, especially when it comes to professional athletes and musicians. If you can play on a top professional sports team (forget about a national football team) I could literally not care less what your face looks like. And in almost any sport these days, if you’re tall, it’s going to be an overall advantage over the majority of your opponents. It baffles me that basically an entire country treated their young star player as though he was a monster. I’ve never respected football in general, though I always thought England fans were decent. Football is about more than scoring more goals than the opponent. It’s about status, money, fame, power, and apparently the fans show up for anatomically standard humans whose face fits their ideal standard of attractiveness. Remember too, these are mostly young and middle aged British men who all treated this poor man so badly. It’s just a messed up situation. I hope it doesn’t occur often in English football, otherwise the fans are literally not fans at all, but idealists who don’t care about winning, but rather the players’ faces and length of their extremities compared to the guy next to him. Sad game. He was an amazing player though. First time I’ve ever heard of him and I checked out his highlights. The real, legit fans seem to appreciate how underrated and undercredited he still seems to be, calling him one of England’s best goal scorers in history. Imagine if the fans could all celebrate all of their star athletes, not just the brunettes, the ones with shorter arms, or the ones they find particularly cute.
