Bad Tech Commercials: Xtra-PC - "Don't Buy a New Computer!"

- This video is a little different but should be fun anyway:)
I take a look at Xtra-PC's youtube commercial "Don't Buy a New Computer...try this" and give some commentary. It's quite the meme-fest!
I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. Remember to stay positive! - Наука
Hell ya, I was searching everywhere to find the kid telling people that the OPTICAL drive isn't a hard drive. lol, nice.
That’s an oddly specific thing to be searching everywhere for. But hey, whatever grates your cheese my friend:)
Thanks for the view and comment!
@@simple_networks If that older guy who said he cant afford a new computer isnt just an actor like the guy at the kitchen table ( where he shows the video on a vista with quicktime vs a non bloated linux on vlc ) then Id sure love to tell him that he wasted the 80$ on something he could essentially have gotten free.
@@simple_networks I saw the ad on RUclips and immediately noticed that he was holding up an optical drive too! What they're selling isn't a scam, but the commercial that they're using is definitely misleading and in a lot of instances factually incorrect. When 'Maria' exclaims how fast it was (26s! :O) it's hardly quick... but nevermind! Goodbye glacier is referring to the speed, as glaciers move incredibly slowly, so he's likening her old PC to a glacier. In a lot of instances, peoples PCs run slowly due to programs starting automatically (cloud storage solutions, overly intrusive virus guards, etc.), nothing that can't be fixed by reloading and being selective about what you install or allow to run (which I get is beyond your average PC user). The recovery partition on most computers is full of bloatware and you're better off putting a clean install of the OS on. This Xtra PC is basically a stopgap as far as I'm concerned and not worth the money they're charging.
Lol, me too! But I was actually looking for that particular part so I could use it as a teaching tool for my tech-impaired friends. If you don't know about a topic, research it before you buy a thing!
i was watching this instead of doing homework but i guess ive learned more in this video than the whole week😊 and also it is really annoying that my Chromebook doesn't have a right click button
"good-bye glacier" I think was just that man's way of simply saying "it's not slow anymore", y'know, since glaciers move slowly....
Ahhhhhh. Make sense to me! I’d never heard that before.
@@simple_networks The colloquialism is "Glacial Pace". It's more often used to portray the speed of change in policies or dogma in big old institutions like the federal government or the Catholic Church. Like, "Climatologists have been warning us about greenhouse gases for decades but since Washington moves at a glacial pace, we're just now seeing a few restrictions on industrial pollution."
The price of the thing would be the problem, I think. The profit margin is up to 50%, because it's only a flash drive and some copying work. But for up to 80 bucks, the stick isn't worth it at all. As you said, new pcs aren't expensive anymore.
Goodbye glacier is another way of saying “I like peen”
Ahhh makes sense. Thanks 👍
I wish I seen this sooner I got scammed by Xtra-pc !
Hi, i just want to say i am sorry you got scammed :/
Where you able to fix the problem with your computer? Or is linux a bit too confusing?
I can help you by sending or making a tutorial on how to install a light weight, simple open-source operating system, they are all free.
I run Linux on two ThinkPads. Both my T510 and my E585. I do run Windows on my Threadripper build and I virtualize Linux operating systems on it. I am very familiar with GNU and what they stand for. They are for free, open-source operating systems. They do not believe that we should have to pay for software to run a computer.
This company, however, is taking full advantage of consumers, especially the technology-impaired. Linux is free, unless you get Redhat server OS, and the USB sticks they are using range from $10 USD to $19.99 USD. They are ripping off customers, and I bet I can find their crap-skinned Linux distro in a torrent somewhere and install it, which I wont.
To me, this is just a scam to take advantage of those who do not understand technology and just want their computer running again. Thank God my family doesn't have to worry about this, because I will fix their computers any time.
They also made an ad for people who want to try Linux saying it’s the best option which is completely false since you can use Linux for free
good bye glacier = a morons way to say good by slow movement
Victims of this marketing scheme are fundamentally buying an overpriced bootable drive with a shitty flavor of Linux attached (where better flavors are free as they should be). I say this because Ubuntu, Redhat, CentOS, Elementary, TAILS etc. have been around for a long time and have a tried and tenured support community. In addition, I should add that Linux/Unix and the open sourced software featured in this video, were created with a mindset of "software and information should be free", which is in direct opposition of the clear intentions of this ad. Here's a question:
If this company wasn't attempting to take advantage of a knowledge gap present in an older generation, why didn't they put out a tutorial, aimed at an solder generation, on how to make a bootable drive (as that's the only actual product they're selling)?
The least they could have done is provided a factual and respectable advertisement for the product they are selling. The convenience of the product certainly has value, as not everyone wants to learn how to make their own. And I really don't have a problem with them selling that, that's how business works after all. It's just the laziness of the ad and the misleading information that really gets me.
Heck, TAILS was *made* for running live. There's no installer on it.
I'm pretty sure that's a cardioid mic your using (picks up audio in front, ignores audio from the back.
The diaphragm is at the front, 99% of the time where the logo is, so if you move the mic so your speaking into the side (front) of it and not the top, you'll get a much better sounding audio :)
Good points on the video though :)
It has multiple pickup patterns, including an Omnidirectional pattern that picks up from the top. I’m not using a quality preamp, which is probably why the audio doesn’t sound fantastic. There was also no compression or anything on that audio.
@@simple_networks Awesome mic then! Mine is cardioid only, bummer
2:55 you forgot to mention how the vista installation was already cluttered with random junk, likely tons of background ram eaters. Also, VISTA...
3:30 while I do appreciate them showing how to enter the bios, that's not how you enter the bios with EVERY computer.
8:05 while a refurbished chromebook could be picked up for ~50 USD, a full-fleged used thinkpad t400, x200, w500, t60, t61, x60, x61, etc can be picked up for ~50 too
great video, not trying to defend xtra as selling a bootable linux flash drive for 30 usd + is very scummy. subscribed
All very good points!
Actually, Windows 7 is more resource-intensive than Vista, but came in an era where Vista has already influenced hardware to the point it can run smoothly.
@@linxu9763 okay? i never stated that vista takes up more resources than win 7
@@icxcarnie I thought you mentioned that with these words:
"Also, VISTA..."
@@linxu9763 Looking back at it, I guess I can see how it means that. However, this is vista-era hardware running vista, so it's still slow as hell.
Also, Win7 and vista use about the same resources, and vista sometimes uses more.
I'd like to point out some of the people here I've seen in other commercials on the same RUclips channel even i dislike Xtra pc commercials most than others
Great review and I was thinking the same thing you said about the $50 cost vs $200 for a tablet or Chromebook.
If you look into it a bit more, they even say you need to send a letter through the post to them to get the source code. They also say that they've done "extensive testing" to find the right flash drive for their scammy Linux live USB, which I really doubt. If you look closely, they just put a sticker over regular Sandisk flash drives lol
The marketing gets even more outrageous. They call it a "15 dollar PC" when it's... it's a flash drive. They advertise this for use in schools which is possibly the dumbest use of this product possible. Kids are gonna rip that USB drive out and throw it around and snap it off. Their marketing is so scum I can't even.
Lol, that thing wouldn’t last 30 seconds in a school😂. By “extensive testing”, they must mean they went to Staples.
Thank God, I had to find a video where the optical drive was pointed out. Seeing that blatant obvious lie was driving me insane
Attention ça ne fonctionne pas sur des PC de plus de 10 ans !!! N. acheter pas ça si c'est votre cas...!!!
lmao i had the same reaction to that first one
Hey somebody doesn't actually sell the damn device talkin about the device Xtra PC must be slipping
should i buy it is it worth the price
I'm 70, I've had a heart attack and a stroke......but I'm not brain dead. This product really, really bothers me. Their advertising borders on the criminal by omitting a LOT of important details (like the fact that this thing won't run Windows programs....for one) and - worst of all - implying that this is a "fix" for a bad computer. People who know zip about computers could watch their ads and think that this damned thing will actually repair, in a sense, an old computer. If you've got a bad motherboard, power supply, RAM, etc. this thing will do nothing. If you've got a bad hard drive, you're not gonna retrieve any files. Their advertising is wildly misleading and clearly targets old folks and the technologically challenged. I've used Linux for the last 20 years and anyone - as most of us know - can download an .iso file, grab any old thumb drive, and easily make one of these for free (and have the programs be more current). And, running a Linux live "thing" has a lot of limitations. I can't believe anyone would be crazy enough to buy one of these damned things. This is like claiming you just invented the wheel - from some folks who don't know the difference between an optical drive and a hard drive!!!! Marketing this goofy thing and selling it to people is just shameless behavior. The only thing wrong with this video is when you said "It is kinda scammy" (referring to OpenOffice). This whole thing is a horrible scam - you're far too kind.
Xtra scam!
I like it:)
Big scam you open their 📦 fully empty
Ever since I pointed out to the x-tra people that the key they sent me does not do what the advert says they haven't answered my demand for a refund...
dont buy this junk
Well, I think that “Goodbye Glacier” is a metaphor. Glaciers are very slow. The computer was slow, like a glacier. Second, Linux can make slow computers fast. There’s no doubt about it. But the thing is, Linux is free. You don’t need a a special USB for it. Just load it onto any USB you have. A great Linux distro for people used to Windows is LinuxFX. There’s two versions, Cinnamon and Plasma. Plasma looks more like windows, but requires a bit more power. If the computer is pre-2010, use cinnamon. If it’s after 2010, use Plasma. Heck, it’s even compatible with windows programs. sourceforge.net/projects/warpzone/files/
This Ad ALWAYS slows down my system causing RUclips app to crash on my tablet.
It's set/fixed at the highest resolution and so, even the first 5 seconds before you can skip causes everything to slow right down.
Some ads do this... But I find the irony particularly annoying on this one.
Of Course You Gave An Orthodox Excellent Lessons. May God Bless You Sir.
Part of that ad is from a video titled "Xtra PC - Maria Brings Her Computer In
". Most of the comments there are about Maria because of her uhhhhh....chest melons! Totally aimed at the less tech-savvy from older generations!
Did you know the xtra pc is actually a san disk drive with stickers on it with a Linux on it
ACTUAL Linux is Xtra better and Xtra free
just buy only the usbkey and after all its free , use rufus and install Linux or ubuntu its free, dont buy this solution
You could do this yourself
yeah it takes a couple of clicks and maybe 20 minutes of waiting. Being "tech illiterate" is the biggest excuse of being lazy and I hate it
@@lunakittyyy its not even tech illiterate. its no common sense and laziness. only kinds would fall for that.
Thank You For Your Honest Information Service.
Well i just saw this, but i do know the some laptops have a DVD hard drive caddy.SO he really isn't lieing,JUST google DVD hard drive caddy ,they're cheap to under 10 bucks. ive got like 10 or 20 laptops and one of them had that as a part number listing.they call it a secondary hard drive.it's for a sata hard drive.I to though when i saw the promo that it's BS,But to be fair ,what he's holding COULD be one of those caddys. But if your stupid enough to pay 60 bucks for free Linux, well then that could be a hard drive.haha
That’s a good point, Im not super convinced it’s a hard rice caddy based on the overall production of the video, but I suppose we should extend them the benefit of the doubt:)
I got an extra PC because my other laptop is not working., I just received it last week, at first I regretted buying it because I thought I just wasted my money, but I'm surprised that it did really work great. and I really happy with extra PC.
Glad to hear it worked out for you!
I Was Going To Buy It, But Now Thanks To You Sir, I Will Buy Chrome Book. Thanks Again.
If you are going to buy a chromebook, make sure to find out the "End of Life" date for the chromebook you are considering purchasing. The "End of Life" date is the date that Google will stop providing security patches and updates for each specific model of chromebook .... some of these things expire in 2021 and some of them expire in 2025 and 2026. If you are going to buy a chromebook make sure you will buy one that will give you the longest possible "Supported" lifetime ...My own personal chrome OS computer is a Chromebase 24 (For Meetings) and after June, 2021 it will become entirely useless and I will have to buy another or go with my original plan of having a Linux desktop custom built for me ... which is probably the route I will go ... but in the interim, my xtrapc installed on my old HP Touchsmart 600 will get me by.
"I Will Buy Chrome Book."
Don't! Just don't. Get a real laptop, put Linux Mint on it and become a happy hippo for the rest of your life. And - most important - be free from Google and similar American capitalist data kraken.
Glaciers dissolve very slowly, that is why he used that term.
Xtra pc should rename to xtra piece of junk
If you want a fast computer, are you sure it is effectively fast?
I prefers effective-ness over quickness. Computer needs data to work.
Glaciers move very slowly. To say something is glacial is to say that it is moving extremely slowly., even more slowly than molasses in the winter.
linux is free this piece of crap is 32 dollars
Tbh I just thought selling whats is basically a Live USB that you can download for free online on to any USB stick is kinda scummy regardless of the shitty ad
you can buy a optical bay hard drive caddy.
fact they had vids on the usb already
bad reviews, on amazon.....
sorry for me coz i got one 32 G xtra pc for about 60 dollars including shipping and i am figuring out how to use it and there are plenty videos in you tube that it says dont buy it, will im not a technician and i like to make faster my pc thats why i purchase this, also when the item delivered i did not open yet because they put onli my family name they never put my first name and five of us here the same family name, and i dont want to open a package or envelop that is not mine so i waited my kids and ask them who order any thing from the internet, but my older son took the package and open it and says its a USB xtra pc, i am not sure if these really fast my pc, dont be stupid like me search on you tube first before you buy dont waste ur money, thank you also for sharing your informative and nice video
What is the difference between the 16gb, 32 gb, and 64gb versions as to speed of operation after installation on the PC?
Good-bye glacier is his way of saying whatever was in the way of your computer not working well is no longer an issue .
Glad you are pointing out that it is not a hard drive but a cd rom. It annoys the hell out of me every time it come on.
They need investigating for selling a free piece of software to the gullible. How can they live with them selves ?
I have software that uses Windows 10 will this work with these programs?
No, the XtraPC runs a distribution of linux, not Windows.
@@simple_networks thank you for a quick reply.
they always use the same 2 laptops for the commercials
"Glacier" is a slow-moving ice glow.
flow?
@@Anon-xd3cf My mistake, your fault.
Peace.
Can you link the original commercial video?
Everyone is over thinking this glacier comment, he is probably referring to her desk top photo of a glacier.
Ohhhhhh. Good thinkin’!
Cool. What is Maria's social media though?
Awesome stuff, thank you very much.
I thought it some ready boost thing
Can it run on a Pentium 3 or 4 computer?
Couldn’t even hold a old hard drive?
Your cromebook point is a little wrong you forgot about used croomebaaks for about 50$ or less
That’s very true. I was going for more along the lines of what someone who Isn’t very tech savvy would end up paying (say you were to buy on amazon). But you are correct in the fact that the more aware shoppers could get away with paying 50 bucks.
If you are going to buy a used chromebook, make sure it is one on which the "end of life" date has not been exceeded or you will be up a creek without a paddle as far as security is concerned.
grandma, mom and dad: "whats a hard drive"?
Can it run Crysis?
The idea is to remove the hard drive from the older computer first. Once you have done that you insert the xtra pc stick and the computer boots off of it and then there is a few questions to answer and before you know it, the xtra pc is working like a charm. I have it installed on an old HP desk top all in one and I would not be without it. So you can cram all your negativity about a great product.
Where, specifically, do you suggest I cram it?
@@simple_networks Just stop negativing a great little product. I have it on a big archaic desktop and it is working just fine and, by the way, is one of the most inherently secure devices out there ....Actually, I apologize for the "Cram It" remark ... it is unprofessional of me to speak in those terms and I do apologize. The problem is that people who are more or less computer ignorant might be stymied by procedures they have no familiarity at all with ... but even that is not a problem for those who would seek professional help to get their little xtra pc device up and running ... you know, a college friend who works in IT or the computer repair guy down the street ....or the tech-savvy grandma .... If people would just remove the hard drive from their junk computer and boot off the xtra pc, it is a piece of cake. By the way, I love your channel.
Thanks! The product I really don’t have a problem with, it’s the advertising method that bugs me. I do believe the product has a market and could’ve useful to a lot of people, but I just don’t like the fact that they take advantage of people’s lack of knowledge to the point where they are lazy about it you know?
@@simple_networks
If you can tell the difference between a hard drive and optical drive, and can follow the steps for booting to Xtra-PC, you can just put Linux on your own USB stick for free. _It's the same damn thing._
dude, the flash drive is worth about 5 bucks and the operating system is free, how much did you pay for it?
Worked for me! My hard drive with Window's 10 OS was corrupt. This device made retrieving my files quick and easy, which is important to me because I have a job that does not include repairing PCs! By the way, at age 65, I have over 35 years experience as an IT professional; likely more years than your age. I did not appreciate your comment about "older people".
You were wrong about the 50 Bucks. I paid 20.
Finally, all you did is complain about a product that actually works without offering an alternative solution. Lame.
With all due respect, I feel you are missing the point of the video. I’m not saying it is inherently a bad product. I’m saying that their misleading marketing is scummy in the sense that it takes advantage of an older generations lack of tech skills. As someone who has done community outreach computer work and tutoring for around 7 years now, I can tell exactly who this product is aimed at and it upsets me a little to see those people get manipulated. I do appreciate your comment but I have a word of advice: backing your argument with the fact that you are older than and have more experience than I do is very silly and childish. Everyone’s argument and opinion is welcome in my comments section, but pulling rank is not. Thanks!
clearly a representative from their company
Sure, it might work, but you still overpaid for a free operating system. You can make these with little effort yourself. And if you have "over 35 years experience as an IT professional", you should already know this.
@@simple_networks Back in the 1060s, I worked with the massive computer systems of an automated air defense sector and I can say, without a stutter, that the Xtra PC is a fascinating and extremely useful little device.
>IT "Professional"
>Doesn't have multiple LiveUSB Linux distros on his keychain in the year 2020.
So us it worth it?
yes and you should buy their entire stock
i like the way they at least attempted to draw youtube viewers attention towards, rather than away from, global warming (as is culturally the norm), by using the term 'goodbye glacier'. and of course extending the life of old hardwear IS very good for the environment, although old computers still require electricity which is bad, but then again it could be generated harmlessly by wind or solar, but then again that infrastructure is technically built and entirely dependant on fossil fuels, making 'goodbye glacier' still inevitable, and thus by extention melting of all ice on earth, resulting in a blue arctic event and the end of the gulf stream, leading to the collapse of the industrial agriculture system in europe and mass starvation of billions of humans. clever stuff
That's one heck of a comment:)
@@simple_networks thanks alot
Goodbye glacier i.e. doesnt look like its frozen (a glacier being ice and frozen)
hello they also fell to tell you it only works on 64 speed computers ,no work on 32 speed
Are you referring to 64 bit and 32 bit? Besides, 32 bit is pretty much obsolete and isn't being used in manufacturer computers anymore.
