    It's risky what I do in this video with running Vista. It's not a risk I would advise anyone should ever take on their network, and I did it for tutorial purpose. I only did it because my backbone server is a Linux machine, and I have a current clonezilla backup image of my primary Windows 10 machine. In short, I did this test so you don't have to!

    March 9, 2021: Thank you for your 2020, up dated review...It WAS too good to be true. I have to say, non-savvy people, like me, appreciate your help. Thanks for not exploiting people with older computers...frequently they (we) are older people, too. Still not savvy, I would rather spend 40.00-50.00 to have my small, struggling local PC expert business get the job. And, you have suggested Opera, and I will try it. Thanks.

      @@LowDoughTech Ive seen videos for things like some magic thing that "greatly improves your internet speed" or some bs like that. While in reality it seems to be simply a wifi extender. In the video show a crappy internet speed. Plug it into the socket and half a second later launch a speedtest.net that shows maxed capacity. Totally legit i tell you. It simply improves your INTERNET speed. Not just gives more range to the wifi. Nope sir!..
      Because ads are legit.
      Honestly. Arent there any laws against false or misleading advertisement in USA?
      Also an ad that ive seen repeatedly which speaks of a Danish engineer who got fired for making an indstructible drone. Except when I then jump to a VPN and go incognito mode browser ill see the exact same ad only now its a Dutch engineer, Or a Moldovian and so on.

    You're right, you're not my Dad but you gave the advice a that a great Dad would, if he's a tech Dad that is, so not only did I like the video but I also subscribed to your channel! So you know, I don't go around just subscribing to just any and everyone's channel. I appreciate your total honesty here because I was just about to buy this thing based on another YT video I watched prior to this one. People were calling the guy out in the comments for giving a fake review so I figured I'd look at one more review and luckily yours popped up immediately after his. Now I really do believe the previous video was fake. I wondered why there wasn't any of the typical screens popping up on the guys computer saying he needed to install Xtra PC or accept and continue setup up, etc. He basically claimed that he plugged in the device and like lightening his computer booted up extremely fast in a matter of 5 seconds. He did a before Xtra PC video just like you did and then after Xtra PC. The whole video was about 3 minutes long. After he plugged in the device there's wasn't any of the typical set up you'd expect. I was thinking something doesn't sound right or that's almost too good to be true and guess what it was. So thank you for being completely honest and not out here just trying to earn a buck by getting folks who don't know any better to purchase a product you're recommending by clicking your referral link. For that honesty sir, you definitely earned that like and subscribe! Plus your voice is just so soothing and the way you portrayed and explained the content kept me watching because I was intrigued by your video. And for what it's worth, I've never given such a comment (review) on any RUclipsr's page. You're definitely my top IT guy to watch now when I have tech questions because I feel I can trust the content in your videos. Keep up the great work sir!! Sincerely,
    Your latest Sub and new fan!

      I'm glad you're happy with your purchase, but the point of this video was to show people who are in the same boat as you how to get a better product for the price of a USB stick. For all of your testimonial saying how great it is, you can see in the comments of this very video that there are elderly people who are not happy with it, and feel like X-Tra PC has taken advantage of them.
      Ultimately, it's your money. But it doesn't change the fact that X-Tra PC is a ripoff.

    • @LowDoughTech
      @LowDoughTech  3 года назад

      When you boot off of the USB stick, it's a temporary (or portable persistent) instance of an OS running from the thumb drive. If you don't run the installer, it won't overwrite the data on the hard drive in the PC, but you can access it to copy it, so if your installation is fudged, but the files are still there, you can back them up.

    If you just want to use the USB stick to retrieve files from your PC is there anything you need to do other than create the USB stick and boot from it? I was following the video to see how to do that and instead you installed Lubuntu onto the PC. Also, I noticed warnings that it only works with MBR not GPT so what happens if you try booting from the USB stick on a PC with a UEFI BIOS that needs GPT to boot? Is there another tool to create the USB stick that will work in that scenario?

    • @gg-gn3re
      @gg-gn3re 4 года назад +2

      To answer your first sentence, nope! That's all you need, this is how majority of places recover files from your windows machine (assuming the hard drive itself isn't broken)
      Just get a $4 usb from amazon 8gb+ and throw any linux on it, ubuntu, lubuntu, mint, etc, and boot up -> open file manager -> go to your hard drive and grab your files!
      MBR should work in either scenario, but yes GPT USB boot has been supported for about 20 years lol

      The easiest way would be to use a Linux live stick, like I show in this video, then plug in another big external USB drive, and copy the files to there. Just keep in mind if the original drive in the laptop is completely dead, there will be nothing to access. How do I run the Applicartion that was installed under Windows Vistas that I was using ..like Office Word, Excep, Power Point, Other video editing and audio cleaning software etc.. How do I run those. What about the data files that was stored under different users under the Windows Vista? Do I have access to those? Looks like your installation wiped of the entire drive and installed Lubuntu, which us strugladites have no idea how to use! (There should have been a pre-warning before I followed the instruction and installed the Lubunto! Now I have nothing except the Lubuntu. Yes, my full installation did indeed wipe the hard drive. So if you have files to back up, do that first. You could possibly be able to open office applications in LibreOffice under Linux. You should indeed have access to all user profiles that were installed on the Windows hard drive. I'm not someone who recommends a full switch to Linux, it's just an alternative option. I myself am bound to Windows because of video production.

I'm a senior on a low fixed income so this would have been a substantial expense for me. I'm disabled living with and caring for my 99-year-old mom so gaming is my one source of fun. I've been gaming since Pong. So, thank you again!
    One question is this. Can you recommend an older computer I can game on? I play 2 games on my iPhone that I've been told I can play on PC on Stacks. [Raid Shadow Legends] I have 3 Dells on life support with no brain activity. So, I'm wide open to suggestions, if you have any. So basically fast & kinda inexpensive.

Thank u n if anyone else has suggestions please comment back cuz I’m definitely clueless when it comes to computers lol

      Hi Trish, you can try what I do in this video for making your own USB stick, but, if you were going to spend money on the laptop anyway, spend money anyway, what I would do is invest that money in a solid state hard drive, and do a fresh install of Windows. I cover how to do that in this video, it sounds challenging, but I break it down step by step.

    So, to be clear, Lubuntu was initially booting off of the USB stick and running just fine, faster/better than Vista, and could have been used as the OS from there (since the computer wouldn't see a difference between the USB input or the installed HDD), correct? And if you were running the OS off of the USB stick, would you still be able to see the C: drive and all of the data there, and be able to access that data from within Lubuntu, or does running the OS off of the stick mean it ignores all of the other hardware and drives on the computer as if they weren't there?

    • @LowDoughTech
      @LowDoughTech  3 года назад +1

      Yes, using the USB stick, you can see the Windows "C:\" drive, though Linux does not call it C:, Linux uses a different naming structure, but all of the data is browse-able/accessible (Drives in Linux are called "SDA1", "SDA2", for example. You can use the USB drive as a permanent bootable solution, as long as you check the "Make Persistent" option in the Universal USB Installer, for example(Rufus and Balena Etcher may handle it a different way...I'm just suggesting what I know!)
      Anyway, that Lubuntu(or whatever other distro) USB stick can be your permanent operating system, and run from the USB stick like a normal OS from a hard drive, without running the installer to write the OS to a "real" hard drive, but I suggest against doing it that way.
      With normal OS usage, there are a lot of read and write cycles, and though read cycles aren't a big deal, write cycles are a very big deal for flash media like USB sticks and SD cards, and will considerably shorten a USB stick's lifespan.
      This is another thing that the people at X-Tra PC doesn't tell anyone, and though it's nice to have a portable OS in your pocket as a tool for troubleshooting and potentially recovering files, it's a downright terrible idea to run an OS from a USB stick as a full time solution.
      I hope that all makes sense, and feel free to ask any further questions if you need more clarifications.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @meadmaker4525
      @meadmaker4525 3 года назад +1

      @@LowDoughTech - Thanks very much for that detailed reply. I understand what you mean about the read/write cycles reducing the lifespan of the USB stick. Makes sense. Taking that a step further then, would you say this would also apply to a USB SSD? To say an SSD is just a massive USB stick might be a bit of a stretch, but it's based on the same sort of technology, to my understanding. So, it makes me wonder if it would be susceptible to the same sort of read/write fatigue as the USB stick.
      My thinking at the moment is to try to get some more life out of my wife's laptop (about 6 years old). It's in good shape, and is currently running Win10, but it doesn't like it. You could go for a meal in the time it takes to boot up or shut down. It's just a case of the software outstripping the hardware, and it's maxed out in that respect.
      If I can get something like Linux Mint running on an external USB drive (be it a stick or an SSD), at least she could give it a try without feeling like she's going to lose everything else on the laptop. At the end of the day, if she really likes it, she could do a more permanent install on her HDD. Then again, having the ability to just switch between the two when it suits her may be more convenient.
      Thanks again for all the info in your response! Helps me make a more informed decision.

    • @LowDoughTech
      @LowDoughTech  3 года назад +1

      @@meadmaker4525 An SSD is more rugged than a USB flash drive, even if it has a USB interface, the hardware is still an SSD.
      If you just want her to give it a try, a USB thumbdrive may be your quickest solution, and if she likes it, then do a more permanent install. Mint is a great choice, for all of the whistles and bells, but if you want to go for pure speed, check out Lubuntu or Manjaro. Manjaro is, I think, the most user friendly. You can see it in action here ruclips.net/video/_H3Qjzy-O48/видео.html
      On your wife's laptop, how easy is it to access the internal hard drive? If it were me, I would replace the hard drive with an internal SSD, install Linux to the new SSD (using the method detailed in this video), I would pull out the old drive, and use a sata to USB converter (amzn.to/2D41hUn) to access the windows files on that drive(Or just transfer them to the new Linux install's user folder.

      @@LowDoughTech - Thanks again for the info. I've done an SSD swap on my old laptop, but my wife isn't interested (her machine, her rules). So, that's why I'm hoping to use a USB stick or SSD to load-up a linux distribution that will be easy for her to mess around with as an alternative without getting overwhelmed. I'll have a look at the Mint/Lubuntu/Manjaro comparison you mentioned and see which one I think might suit her best. Thanks again! :-)

    In 2013 bought re-furnished iMac directly from Apple to use in video editing - it basically went into 'little colourful wheel of death routine' within my 4th video editing cycle. I 'cleaned up' my system several times with the on-line Apple help personnel who were nice and all but while the visual quality of the screen is diminished, and I hate wasting things, the hard drive ticks over so slowly now that even word editing has become a nightmare - my question is: can I install this Lubuntu OS on an iMac, or would that totally mess with all of the content that is now cloud based, thanks to their new Catalina system?

      You can install Linux on an IMac (I've even installed Windows 10 on many Macs, but that's off-topic). Depending on what you do, it will potentially break your workflow. If the programs you're using are Mac specific, they won't work in Linux.
      If the IMac is unusable at this point, installing Linux and changing your workflow could be an option, but that is a call only you can make.
      A lot of people swear by it, but I'm personally not a fan of video production on Linux.
      I would recommend upgrading the hard drive to solid state, but that is a bear of a job on an Imac, and one of the reasons I've always stayed away from all in one sealed units like that. I like to have easy access for repair/upgrades.
      You could try creating a system image with clonezilla, and installing Linux on the Imac, and see how things go, and if it doesn't work out, you can always restore the original system image. Just an idea.
