Uploading the 18yo Johnnie Walker review and the 18yo Dewars review back-to-back was a clever move. I was certainly going to watch the Johnnie Walker review, and being able to compare it to another highly available brand's blend with the same age statement virtually guarantees that I'll watch this one too. The 'double matured' aside is a very nice bonus!
In my opinion the 18 yo is the best Dewars taste wise...i am happy that Ralfy has given it such high recognition...means i have decent taste...i am in a self congratulatory mood😂😂 thanks again for the details Ralfy, you Malt Maven
Got a miniature of this in with a bottle of the 15 I bought. It’s composed and well made and has the grace that comes with age. But the volume is turned WAY down low, so it’s hard to taste the complexity that also should come with age. If this were $49 USD it would be well worth it, but around $65 where I am it’s not intense enough to warrant the money.
i was sipping on a famous grous 16 year old blended. Its in a vic lee special box/bottle. I think it was intended for selling abroad/airports/luxury but a good friend who gets discount got me 2 bottles for £16 each. it is finnished in an additional cask too. Very good sipping whisky and well worth the price i paid. Wouldnt pay £65 as qouted on master of malt though! Its very sweet sherried white peppery toffee. slightest hint of highland park at the end.
Surprised a Dewars received such a good review. There are other good reviews for it too. Fair price also. Thanks, Ralfy, for putting this on my radar.
Excellent review Ralfy. Dewars is an old stand by in New York and Texas...All the Best...
Last blended review for a while? Hmmm. Have you tried Rock Oyster? Thought long and hard about getting it. I feel it may come closest to representing the Islands region. Too bad Islay is included too....
Whyte & Mackay replaced their's entry level Special with Triple Matured NAS blend with just that, explaining into the details on the back label what has been done and why about that triple maturation. And considering its price point and all- decent cheapo blend without any roughness and some nice sherry influence. And hefty dose of caramel to look real nice in the glass with ice 😁
I had a bottle a few years ago. It had a blue box & label. It was nice, a little woody.
Hi Ralfy,I am interested in the taste of sulphur which creeps into some whisky and, in my opinion, spoils the experience. My understanding is that it comes from the use of sulphur candles used to prepare sherry casks - can you please say something about this at some point. I've had very disappointing experiences with a Bowmore 15 YO and a Linkwood 15 YO from G&M. I don't like the taste of burnt rubber!Glad you will be reviewing a Deanston and I hope it's the 18 YO - which I think is delightful. All the best and keep up the good work......it must be hard.
In Ontario, it seems that blends jump high in price after 15 years. That could change with a election coming and the LCBO going on strike. Here hoping is blows up in the LCBO face.
Personally I find the 12 the best "warm up" dram going, plus I managed to pick up a couple of bottles for 15 quid each.
I've always used Black Label, maybe I should branch out a bit and try the Dewar's 12. What do you find to be the main difference?
It's just a very different whisky, it's a very gentle dram much like the Whyte and Mackay 13 year old, it just kinda tastes of pleasant whisky without having loads going on.
Some pals and I just paid a visit to a truly unique local distillery with a great product. Richland Rum in Richland GA USA makes single estate rum from sugar cane syrup, distilled once with tails added to the next batch, and aged for at least three years in new charred oak barrels. The result is a sweet buttery spirit with lots of oak character and a unique caramel, chocolate, and figs finish. I'm not sure if it's available in the UK yet, but if it is you should find it and try it for a taste of something different. I'd love to hear your impression of it if you do.
Thanks for the review Ralfy. I would like to try a dram of this one, I will look out for it.
i had a glen livit that was kept in a laphroig cask at cask strength once. It was in the plymouth gin distillery. My brother and I were right into the whisky and the bar man told us about it(what a guy!)
Here is a fun game to play. Try to guess what the malt mark will be based on what Ralfy says overall up to giving the malt mark. I guessed an 87 so I guess I'm getting fairly good at this. Anyways, keep up the good work!
Thanks ralphy, only a review of yours would have me venture back to dewers, had the 12 yo and was in the top (or should i say bottom) worst whisky experiences.....but will roll the dice
Somewhat random questions, Ralfy, but I was wondering about your opinion on corks. I opened up a bourbon that I have been keeping stashed away in the dark basement for about 10 years. Unsurprisingly, despite my careful hands, the cork utterly tore apart when I tried to open it. It is also extra difficult, because I live about 6,500ft above sea level in Colorado. It is very dry. Long story short, I would be completely satisfied if all producers used synthetic corks (and for wine, too). Any compelling reason they should stay with natural cork? Is it more environmentally sustainable (synthetic corks must stay in the landfill for ages)?
. . . always good to keep spare corks from finished bottles as replacements for broken ones !
agreed. I have a few synthetic ones of various sizes that I've saved and gotten multiple uses out of. Very handy.
Sean Galloway It seems like that happens more often now. Don't know if quality of corks have changed. Problem is if bits of cork drop in. Mighty be okay if cork was intact originally, but I use a fine mesh tea strainer and funnel to pour into clean container and back into bottle. Hopefully you then have a spare cork that fits. Aberlour needs a big cork.
Ralfy,
First of all, thank you for all you do. Ralfy, there is a quiet storm brewing, or rather distilling.....your countless American viewers want - no, they need, they YEARN - for you to turn your malty musings to the epic Eagle Rare 10 year bourbon by Buffalo Trace. 45%. Age statement. Gorgeous packaging. And most importantly, gorgeous, delicious bourbon at an affordable price. Ralfy, this is the single most prominent whiskey you have never turned your eye to. It warms our hearts and cockles, and we in America think it will warm yours as well. The time is now, we need your thoughts!
- Eagle Rare Man
. . . I have been looking at this one for a while now !
Another one "done and dusted." Thanks Ralfy. I find it interesting that you marked this one higher than your previous review of Johnny Walker 18-year-old platinum. Only because you seem to enjoy that one just as much as this one. I know, I know, a malt mark is only a snapshot. Thanks for putting them in back to back reviews for better comparison though.
PS. If I (Peter Tonos) may add my own malt mention, "Monsters of the Midway." It is a nickname for the Chicago Bears football (American) team. Although, it was originally applied to the University of Chicago "Maroons" college football team in the 1930's. "Midway" is a reference to the Midway Plaisance, a long, green swath of boulevard space bordering the southern end of the campus. So now you know. Keep up the great work!
. . . your MM is now on the M-mention list, thanks !
Thank you!
Deaston it is then. Love your reviews Ralfy.
$90 USD in the liquor store I work in.
hahahaha thanks Ralfy!! great to get a malt mention and for someone to pronounce my name correctly too! great vids, great info, great learnings. sipping uigedail (sp?) right now. Would love to see a reveiw...just sayin'. i know the NAS rule, but maybe an exception could be made and all that? maybe? thanks again sir and take care
...the next malt will be...I got it! *Daphroaigston*!
I'm sorry to hear that you will not be doing blends for a while. While I understand the cost argument, I really do think that blends can bring some taste experiences to the table that, while different, are as VALUEable as single-malts. Besides, while YOU might be seeing these price behaviors there on the other side of the pond, at least here in the Midwest of the US, blends remain, generally, cheaper.
I won't stop watching your videos, but I am disappointed that the breadth of content is shrinking.
Interesting that about doubled aged, thanks Ralfy
Ralfy, love your videos they have such passion and your enthusiasm always makes me smile. I have one question, have you ever gone out to eat and ordered a whisky and the bartender tried to bait and switch. If so, how did you handle it?
. . . I make things easy and never order a malt in any bar except from a couple of Glasgow venues which I trust !
Very elegant whisky.
Good review.
Ty for sharing :)
Nice review, Ralfy - any guess as to how much malt vs. how much grain spirit involved here?
. . . it's hard to say, the grain meshes so well with at least one of the malts, but 60/40 in favour of malts. IMO
hi ralfy, any chance for you to review a millstone whisky? it's a dutch brand and i would be very interested in your opinion
ralfy, i did not check, but did you ever suggest to mix a whisky with apple cider. because i am just trying, and it seems to work out fine.
. . . I have never tried that option.
Did they change the packaging
ralfy can i ask you something? I want to buy a whiskey for my dad, he is a beginning whiskey drinker. I would like your opion for what you think is the best whiskey under 50 euro's. I would love to hear it from you. Greetings from the Netherlands.
This was my first "expensive" bottle, might have been bias because of that but I really enjoyed it. I also have the Dewars 18 Founders Reserve, have you tried this one? Is it similar or totally different?
. . . similar but different !
ralfystuff that review is the definition of concise yet descriptive haha
or is there a way to request a review of a whiskey I don't know? I apologise I'm rather new to this, lol
Also, while on the subject of blends and knowing you're an admirer of things Springbank.....what's your opinion on Campbeltown Loch?
. . . the 21yo had a good reputation, but I don't look out for them now-a-days !
Thanks. Any particular reason?
hey Ralfy, would there be any chance of you reviewing any of the mcclelland's single malts? possibly highland or islay?
. . . no palns at the moment as I can't find these whiskies where I am.
ahh ok, the only other question I have would be this then, a friend from work gave me two bottles of whiskey, Canadian club and Seagram's VO (both cheap cocktail type ones I know, lol) but they're both from 1971...they still have the paper labeling on them and are unopened, I remember your whiskey review for Johnny walker red label where it was one bottle from the 80s and one now, does your theory about older cheap whiskies being better than their present day counterparts apply to the two I've mentioned or would you say that really only applies to scotches?
review #145 it was I believe
I was actually surprised, didn't even know about this blend. The more you know!
hey Ralfy!

Radio Laboratory Yes, this is interesting, I know Asyla is 40 percent un-chill filtered, but this could be because column still grain.
Ty Hargett
hi Ty yea that makes sense, but CB"Oak Cross" is a vatted malt...w/no grain involvd.
@43% unchilld natural color...could b it has 2b n the wood 10yr or more! hmmm..intristin!!
hello ralfy
can u please tell the preferable amount of water in 30ml glenfarclas 15year(2015-16 release)as per your palate??? can i rosk putting 22.5ml (4.5teaspoons like u did in 2011 or it can drown?
please give me your minimum to maximum range considering 46% and sherry 15years old
. . . can't do that, you need to find this for yourself due to your specific taste perceptions, good luck, it's easy with practice.
ralfystuff
i started serious malt apprecoation with your videos n palate of my whiskyclub of 3 persons has developed with your water measures
..so ill be highly obliged if u can tell ur preference with experience...
Sehraj Singh Virk There are no fixed rules, nobody's palate is measure of perfection, including Ralfys. Only correct answer is - experiment. Experience of taste and smell is a very subjective thing
See whisky brazil below and patreon, this guy is worthy of a boxsetesque contribution , the maestro of the malt
Love your videos!
As always great vid..
