Eurovision 2023: Grand Final data board | Every ranking and point

  • This is a presentation of all the points and rankings from the 2023 Eurovision Grand Final from Liverpool.
This is my first build using web graphics, which means this is built entirely in a browser using JavaScript animations (and HTML and CSS, using the Vue.js. framework for those who care!). I’ve rigged the sounds too, and maps are from @maptilerofficial. This is a massive change for me and how I usually build these videos, but a great challenge. It’s a huge positive that you don’t need specialist software on particular hardware to create data visualisations and animated graphics - all you need is a browser and access to the internet to google ‘how to’ videos! In fact, I made a lot of use out of ChatGPT in order to efficiently learn and fix bugs.
You may have seen an animation concept that has a similar feel - I based the layout and look from what @erwrie built in this video: • Eurovision 2023 scoreb... . Thanks for such inspiring work! As design elements from 2023 came out, I adapted accordingly. Also thank you again to Danielle Kelly for her code in R which did an efficient pull of all the data from the eurovision.tv website.
The backing music is lifted from the actual broadcast, via @KubasEurovision - the music was composed by Michael Nekrasov, BBC, EBU (all rights to them).
After Kalush Orchestra’s win in 2022, Eurovision embarked on an unprecedented season. For the first time, the EBU denied the winners the right to host in their own country and for a few weeks, the Contest became subject of comments from politicians in the UK, who unsurprisingly failed to grasp the size and scope of ‘one night in May’. No international conferences or performers are travelling to Ukraine whilst the illegal and outrageous invasion by Russia continues. The EBU eventually offered the Contest to the BBC, and for the first time since 1998 the Contest returned to Britain. My first Contest was 1998, so to me this was other worldly - for so long it seemed like the idea of the BBC hosting once again was an unreachable target. Thanks of course, should go to Sam Ryder and his song which got the UK its highest finish since, well 1998.
After a tough host city battle, Liverpool beat Glasgow and I can say from first hand, Liverpool set a new bar on how to host the Contest. Every shop, bar, street had something going on and something referencing the Contest. To hear Ukraine’s entry for this year being piped through a shopping centre was quite surreal! I know many memories were formed on the streets and docks of that wonderful city - the strong May sunshine helped of course!
In the end, Liverpool gave us a two-song battle which will go down in Contest history alongside Céline and Scott, Sonia and Niamh and Cliff and Massiel. In 2022 we’d seen an overwhelming audience vote sweep Ukraine to victory. This year we saw a dominant jury score for Sweden battle with an even more dominant audience vote for Finland (but nothing like 2022). The crucial difference was that Sweden’s audience vote wasn’t far behind Käärijä’s and so it was more than enough to see the first woman to be crowned Eurovision champion twice. You’ll see in the data that Sweden’s victory was assured from early on - every time Finland claw some difference back with a good audience vote, Sweden also have a semi decent vote too, meaning the gap between them remains stubbornly at around the 50 point mark.
In historical terms, there must be a mention of Ireland. Sweden now equal Ireland’s impressive trophy haul, and even Johnny Logan’s record has been challenged (as a performer anyway). Ireland’s 2023 contest was somewhat of a disaster, with questionable delegation members being removed and another failure to qualify. There’s now been 8 contests without an Irish finalist since 2014. There’s absolutely no smugness from London though. The UK’s result was a bitter pill to swallow after such a success in Turin - I’m hoping this was a blip. The song was perhaps not strong enough for a this competition, although its commercial success is notable. Being hosts and performing last also perhaps dampened the points haul somewhat too. Anyway, as we always say…what’s another year?

Cheers! Interesting how close place 10 to 15 are to each other, actually. Not only points wise, but also in terms of national jury rankings. Also the power of one juror alone is quite striking. A quick example: one very German and very experienced juror voted Austria down, otherwise Austria would have made Germany's top 3 and thus the overall top 10 (+5) instead of Czechia (-1). That's just one example, I'm sure there are dozens of similar close races hidden in this fabulous scoreboard!

I decided to give the points out in the order of the juries in the programme, but I kinda wanted to see if there was a way where Finland occasionally topped the board...it all seemed a bit hard to work out...the lead of around 50 points seemed quite stubborn!!

I'm sure I commented on this on first release but as ever, such fantastic work! Of course the fluidity, animation and clear breakdown of data down to a T, all a pleasure to watch. And even more so being done in web graphics which kinda blows my mind a little bit!
I remember you did a fab breakdown of a scoreboard build in Viz in a previous video; not sure if you would but I reckon it'd be great to see a breakdown of how you did this within a browser as mentioned! I can't help thinking some parts were pre-prepared in say AE and then duplicated/replicated as per in code, but would be massively impressed if every single bit was done in JS! And, if like Viz, how it works re triggering each section working with the data - or if it was a case of scripting out how you'd like it to work then hitting 'play' and letting it do its thing.
Infact, I've seen how its like your previous GF data board of 2022, where it entry counts down from 26th to its position to equal its corresponding points which is really nice; giving an extra bit of context reminding viewers the 1-10&12 meaning.
EDIT: Loving the attn to detail - just seen how when a country is last (i.e 26th of 26), it has a flash of red over its position - honestly brilliant stuff!
Mindblowing work both visually and technically, loving geeking out over this!

@@thereorderboard interesting! Is it common for them to release the results that much later? I think if we haven't got them now, we probably won't get them at all, which sucks cause I kinda demand the transparency lol. And I wanna know if they might have been borderline qualifiers in some countries.
The official results say San Marino finished 15th and Romania 16th in the semi final, even though they got both 0 and toe breaker rules would put Romania first, since they performed earlier. But since SM is higher, i wonder if that's because their average ranking was higher than Romania's, but still not as high to get any points.

I would prefer if they switched the format of the voting sequence so that both sets of results were given by the spokespersons on TV personally , and this year's result is an excellent example - the juries didn't always like kaarija but they did Loreen - so she was always out of reach. But it would have been worth watching and the race wouldn't have been called until very late on.
Was expecting much even set of results rather than a landslide especially with the jury as there were very few poor songs and plenty of good ones - four of them in the UK Top 10 single charts says a lot to that (only one being Mae Muller the home entrant).
