Whats the difference between horse boat and a butty boat ?

That's a good question. A horse boat obviously was built to be pulled by a horse. When motored narrowboats came along it was better to use them to pull them instead of using a horse. The the horse boats could carry more than a motor boat. Travelling in a pair, either with another horse boat(as done with large families on wide waters) or a motor, you were buddied up (which is the likely source of the term butty). When new boats were built they were built in pairs with an unpowered boat, however it was never built to be towed by a horse boat, so we're.always called a butty.

@@mykaskin so basically just depends on when they was built so early 19 century was most likely a butty boat anythin before motor boat or steam horse boat
