    I would argue whether the move on 1:01 makes the pawn closer to the starting point of the opposing king. It is true geometrically speaking (if you simply measure distance between cell centers with a ruler), but in the metric of the board itself the central field is closer for a pawn to its target than the one on the side: the pawn can reach the destination from the center in 3 moves, but it takes at least 4 moves (5 if you're not allowed to return to the center) from the black field on the side. So, I think it's worth mentioning in the rules that 'closer' should be understood in the purely geometrical sense here.

    I'm not actually good at chess but have a lot of fun playing around. A far easier way to use the diplomat would be: Take regular chess.
    Replace the two pawns in the middle of each player with a diplomat. A diplomat moves one step diagonally or forward and captures like a pawn. However, a capture replaces the diplomat with the captured piece of the other color, e.g. if a black diplomat captures a white knight, after capture you take the diplomat off the board and put a black knight on its place. This diplomat of course can check the king and capture en passant or be captured en passant.

    Comment about the Diplomat:
    4:25 - There may be a problem with the Suborn Power not so much from game-balance but from practicality: The actual number of chess pieces that are in a set. Aside from a Queen, which is relevant only in variants like Quadular, where there are Royal Pieces besides the King and Queen that can serve the Diplomat's function, there are multiples of each chess piece in the same color. Therefore, by said practicality, the Suborn Power should have the following limit:
    *A chess piece may only be Suborned if you do not have the maximum number of that chess piece on your side for the set that you are playing*
    If you use a standard chess piece set with this circular setup, this provides a limit of 8 Pawns for your side, but you may Suborn your opponent's Knight, Bishop, or Rook without having yours captured first.
    In most cases, the following restriction would be installed as a result of the prior rule, but should be part of the "Diplomat" ruleset in any event:
    *You may not Suborn your opponent's King or Diplomat*
    Suborning the opponent's _singular_ Diplomat would give a player a distinct advantage in that that play has a monopoly on the Suborn power until such time as a pawn may be promoted. If a game has multiple Diplomats, they may be Suborned.
    There are 2 other rules that I would like to submit that may increase the Suborn power, one of which requires Plunder Chess:
    *A Diplomat, in the process of Suborning a Pawn, may either retain the Pawn or promote the Pawn to a Knight or Bishop if there are fewer than 2 Knights/Bishops on the board in total.*
    Knights and Bishops are "Minor Pieces"; no bribing a Pawn with a promotion to Radial-and-Circumferential Rook, Queen, or Diplomat.
    *If playing under the Plunder Chess setting, a Diplomat, in the process of Suborning a chess piece, may Invest that chess piece with any available Vest. Said Vest must be legally available to the Suborned chess piece. Queen Vests allow the Queen's movement range; if playing a variant with both Rook and Bishop but no Queen, the Queen's vest allows both the Rook's and Bishop's movement ranges. The King's vest grants Diplomat powers instead of King's powers and may be used to Suborn instead of Capture. As the King's Vest grants Diplomat powers, it is available to all Suborned chess pieces. Since Diplomats may not Capture, nor may they be Suborned, they may not acquire Vests. If playing with the Pawn Promote variant, a Pawn may not be both Promoted and Vested when Suborned*
    "King's Powers" include Succession and/or Vulnerability in addition to Movement range.
    I would also allow the Diplomat to move 1 or 2 spaces in any direction on a standard or larger Chess board. A Diplomat may not capture but may "Jump" over an adjacent chess piece. Diplomats would not be subject to en passant if granted 2 spaces. The Suborning Power would still only work on adjacent chess pieces.
    If, in lieu of being able to move 2 spaces under any circumstance, a Diplomat is instead granted a Pawn's doublestep, they would then be vulnerable to en passant, regardless of their direction. The doublestep may be used to move closer to the center from the outer 2 ranks or files on each side, but may only be used orthogonally, not diagonally. A diplomat must follow a doublestep with a single move before being able to doublestep again. Aside from this restriction, a Diplomat may use the doublestep as many times as they want. Again, the Suborning Power would still only work on adjacent chess pieces.
    Conversely, a Diplomat should be able to Suborn a Pawn that took a doublestep in an _en passant_ manner, but only on the turn immediately following that doublestep. The Suborned Pawn is placed where the _en passant_ capture would normally occur.

      Yes. If you look at the diagram drawn when explaining pawn captures, one of the lines does point back towards that player's own starting side. As long as the target piece is adjacent to both your pawn AND to a space that pawn could legally move, it can capture there.

    Comment about the board:
    That center area is very large; large enough for 6 chess pieces, 3 to a side. There are 2 ways this could be addressed:
    Option 1: When the Center Space is occupied only by the Player's chess pieces, then said Player may land on or pass through that space as though it was unoccupied. When chess pieces controlled by the Opponent are in the Center Space, they block the space. A player may Capture their choice of ONE of the Opponent's chess pieces within the Center Space; likewise, a Diplomat may Suborn only one of the Opponent's chess pieces in the Center Space. The Center Space may be occupied by chess pieces of both sides. A chess piece currently in the Center Space may not Capture an Opponent's chess piece within the Center Space; they must first leave the Center Space then legally reenter on a future turn. A Diplomat in the Center Space may Suborn an Opponent's chess piece within the Center Space.
    Option 2: Break the Center into 6 Spaces, 3 on each side. Both of the spaces in-line with the center 3 files are colored Yellow; the spaces immediately clockwise form the yellow spaces are colored Red and the spaces counter-clockwise from the yellow spaces are colored Blue. Center Spaces are Orthogonally adjacent to the 2 spaces behind/outside of it (3 spaces for Yellow spaces), the same color space on the opposite side, and the center spaces immediately clockwise and counter-clockwise of it. Center Spaces are diagonally adjacent to the 2/3 spaces behind/outside of it, the 2 spaces in the inner ring immediately adjacent to those, and the 2 Center Spaces that are not orthogonally adjacent to the space in question.
    I think that I would prefer Option 2, though I'm still trying to process how it would impact the Bishop.

    Stating the pawn movement rule as 'closer to the starting space of the enemy king' kinda works intuitively, but is a bit ambiguous because there are multiple paths forward, so distance to a space is not well defined. If you take it to mean _shortest_ distance then the rule doesn't work as stated (any move not towards center at best leaves shortest distance the same, and some moves from center increase shortest distance). However, if "closer" means "reduce _maximum_ (forward) distance" then this rule may work still...

    • @quillenkai6714
      @quillenkai6714 3 года назад +3

      He specifically noted that a pawn needn’t take the shortest line to the king, just that it has to get closer to the king than it was before its move

    Couldn't diplomat chess be played in a normal board? Just keep all normal rules and substitute the queen by the diplomat

  • @MaximumBloop
    @MaximumBloop 3 года назад +1

    The diplomat piece would be kinda broken in normal chess ngl. You effectively double the value of every capture it makes at the cost of no queen. This thing could control space with pawns like it's nothing

    • @djangel3108
      @djangel3108 Год назад

      I heavilly doubt it would be broken, its movement being the same as the king would make it slow AF and just as easy (if not easier) to capture as the king, though if it did get into the range of an enamy piece it could give you an advantage by converting, you likely won't ever convert a rook or bishop to your side, maybe a knight if your lucky, and the dream of a suborned pawn promoting just makes the diplomat's mouth water at the thought although it would probably never happen.
