Hope you enjoy this no-fuss, no-talking, tune-up of a classic 1996 Ford Ranger.
The Ford Ranger had been sitting for about five years and was in need of a little TLC. We started by first checking all of the fluids, topping off the coolant and oil, and then putting in a fresh battery. It immediately started right up but threw an EVAP check engine code! It was caused by a small pinhole in the fuel filler neck above the gas tank.
The ford ranger then got a thorough wash, paint decontamination with a synthetic clay bar/pad, and then a 1-step polish with a hybrid cutting polish.
We tried a few different products on this car, including a "ceramic" wax, which is definitely not as long-lasting as a ceramic coating but still gives a nice shine to the paint.
We removed the rusty lumber rack and plastic bedliner, deep cleaned the bed, scuffed it up with Scotchbrite pads (~800 grit equivalent), and then applied a DIY bed liner. The old plastic bedliner can allow water accumulation underneath it, possibly leading to rust down the road, so it’s important to remove it, adding a rubberized coating instead. We also drilled water rain holes into the bed to allow water to drain out. The drain holes can be capped with rubber inserts when they aren't being used.
The front grill had a large crack, so we went ahead and used a 2-part JBweld epoxy to repair it, followed by Bondo, a quick pass of sandpaper, then primer, and a metallic finish spray paint.
We removed the old window tint that was falling off the rear window and tinted the sides and back to provide a slight edge of privacy and heat rejection to this tiny truck.
All in all, this simple "refurbishment" project was a great chance to get this fun little ranger back on the road, running great, and looking great too.

I bought a 94 ranger splash 4 300 bucks spent about 500 in slave cylinder pressure plate resurface the fly wheel new radiator new body mounts new fluids and runs great for the last 3 years starts up 1st try everytime great running truck you should see what I did to dash board and interior looks like a new truck best thing I ever did I'm not a mechanic but you tube videos help me fix it all up

Did almost the same damn thing to a 94 I bought for $700 back in 2018. Brake job and fresh tires and it took me 70-100 miles 5 days a week for an entire summer. I miss that truck often!

I have a 96 ranger same color but a five speed i bought for 300$ last spring and i spent the summer going through it, drive it everyday. Barely started and didnt run when i got it. Now it looks like yours

Wow what a turn around I wish more people would save these old trucks my personal favorite I would like to find one in decent shape is the old S 10 blazer 2 door I love the look of those and I used to be a pre delivery inspector when they were rolling pff the line brand new

Thanks! The grill repair was definitely a budget-minded task. A replacement grill is anywhere from $50-$100+, since we already had bondo and sand paper, a can of metallic paint was a fraction of the cost of an entire new grill.
There's nothing wrong with practical repairs sometimes... it just didn't seem to make sense to spend 5% of the total car's value on a cosmetic item that we could easily repair, and instead apply the budget for the car into more important items like bed liner or tailgate latch.

Thanks! It’s so water can drain when it rains or when you wash the bed out.
A common cause of rusted out beds on trucks like this is when water pools up in the corners with no where to go, or when water gets trapped under the plastic bedliner (which is why we removed it and used a rubberized coating instead!)
also need to put a plastic plug/cap in the new hole though, so when transporting sand or rocks, they don’t fall out. Just remove the cap when water needs to drain.
What is the name of the bed rack that's on it. Have been trying to find one for my ranger.

No new paint! Just did a thorough paint correction, which includes polishing the paint to remove oxidation, contamination, and scratches.

Keep the ladder rack , they are hard to find for the ranger.

Not bad, a lot of rigged-up cheap/fast fixes (tailgate wire, self tappers) that are good enough for flipping and the next guy can do a proper fix if they go bad I guess - but if its sold cheap, they'll probably just beat it to death anyway.
Thanks! This definitely wasn't just a quick flip - we used the truck for a long time to move stuff around and finish up random projects. The reality is just that this truck was bought for $300 and when fixing it up - it didn't justify additional extra parts or time in most cases. Being cheap or resourceful isn't necessarily a bad thing!
if you take care of those old trucks from the begining, they can go ungodly amounts of miles & years.reletively trouble free.my 90 is still going strong as the day it was built.but i took good care of it to.burns a 1/3 of a quart of oil between 4k change intervals.at over 200k+ miles.the stock water pump lasted 174k.starter around 185k.back when ford give a crap about quality & value.instead of cheapness & GREED.mines the 4.0 though.

Why the hole on the truck bed?
So that water can drain out when it rains. Truck bed rust/rot in this area is very common as trucks age because water pools up. A rubber grommet cap can be put in the whole if you want it to be sealed but removable.

Yep! You are right. That show of the dash was before we completed most of the repairs. Ranger runs great now, but does have over 300k miles on it.

The Ford Maverick is close! Definitely wish we had a new generation of small pickups and utility vehicles. It's crazy how large the modern F150 is!

Put a battery in it and started it I revived it WTF
Many 10's of hours of work went into fixing the truck up overall, but luckily all it needed to get it started was fixing evap leaks, a thorough tune-up, and a new battery!
