'We Made It': Owner Harry Veruchi, Trainer Larry Demeritte Bring West Saratoga to the Kentucky Derby

One of the most heartwarming stories at the 150th Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve involved the connections of West Saratoga. Owner Harry Veruchi and trainer Larry Demeritte have a relationship that goes back decades finding good horses at low cost and developing them into winners, and Veruchi’s $11,000 purchase West Saratoga brought the pair along with colleagues, family, and friends to Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.
West Saratoga received a lot of betting support from fans rooting for Demeritte, who is battling cancer, and while the colt didn’t win the Derby, he helped set the stage for an unforgettable experience.
