As a Vancouverite I agree with pretty much all of this. I will say that as a woman who's not 6'5'', I used to work in the DTES and have never been accosted by the homeless folks there. I've even walked alone in a mini skirt at night and not been so much as cat-called. Ironically I've had way more trouble with regular dudes harassing me or following me from the train. It makes me really sad that we price people out of housing in Vancouver, then criminalize their homelessness. I'm hoping the city takes a turn for compassion, since it's kinder (and cheaper!!) to help people with housing and addiction support than it is to constantly harry them or trash their belongings.
Homeless people now includes many uprooted from their apartments by money grabbing evictions by the influx of overseas investors buying up older buildings with low rent. Rubber stamping the evictions by the Residential Tenancy Branch, a BC government agency puts the blame on the NDP government.

@@trav4oilers I'm a great fan of the stories of the grand railway hotels and will look forward to that. I hope to visit all of them at least once and have a few checked off so far, particularly the CP hotels - I'm named after a CP ship!
I am one of the few people born in and around Vancouver who loves snow, even when it falls in the city. It’s so pretty. And unlike a lot of people here, I have snow tires. I also know how to drive in it. My dad is from the Maritimes, he insisted on both.
Yeah same here. Born and raised in Vancouver and I love when it snows, shoveling it doesn’t bother me, I love driving in it, all of it. Contemplating moving to Calgary as I’m sick of this damn city. Pay so much money for what? Beautiful scenery? Yeah f that.
I worked outside as a groundskeeper for years in Vancouver and never found the rain to be all that bad. Beats the many feet of snow you have to deal with every day in winter everywhere else.
You got a good year weather-wise, there are some summers where it still rains 10-15 days a month & the winter was real, with more snow than the city typically gets (where it is usually rain).
The Couver needs to build an HSR underwater to Naniamo on Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island is big enough to develop and still have plenty of wild wilderness left.
I would love to see that, would be an incredibly long project away but def great idea. thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)

Nice video. I remember when River District was nothing and it seemed to have propped up overnight. At the moment many people there seem to own cars, but I wished that they ran more bus schedules for the area! Used to work nearby and the bus was very rare

You did a great job accurately depicting this city. I have been lucky enough to call this home for almost 40 years now. We do have problems, but all cities do. With the mild climate here, a lot of marganalized people come from across the country to survive in our winters without frostbite or freezing to death living on the streets. That helps give us a higher than average population of impoverished and entrenched people. I would also like to comment on the building as you had mentioned them not being too tall. There is an aspect of not cutting off views , but it is also noteworthy to mention we are on the pacific rim, and lo0ng over due for a major earthquake as we are frequently reminded. That is a more prevalent reason for the lack of towers... which is also changing. A lot fo the newer buildings are coming in around the 50 to 60 floors as the engineering is making safer structures. (Still to be put to the test.)
I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
Awesome video. Thanks! Lived here for a summer back in 2007. Visited again for a week in 2014. Still have more to explore. Beautiful city. A nice chill vibe. Very pricey but really - the rest of the country is quickly catching up. I’m in Ontario, not much better here. Also in London ontario - the violence, homeless, drugs, etc - EXTREMELY bad here. Over the past 5 years it’s been steadily getting out of control. Anyways, great points you make about the quality of life in van . great job trav! Useless sidebar - Stanley park and coal harbour - can’t say enough. By far my fav area.
Great video , love the way you tell a story. Keep up the good work. PS Surrey is not that bad and its more affordable than Vancouver but still close enough to enjoy its fruit.

Simplest is what you have said, "Try living somewhere else". Then you realize how amazing this city is. And learning how to live without a car is a key for me, but I live close to frequent transit. A very nice summary of the city. Luckily I have lived here mosy of my life. Montreal and area is so flat. Lived there for six years. Always glad to return to Vancouver, my favourite city.

I'm curious as a working class gentleman, in these crazy times of insane rentals, is Vancouver a good idea for a single person looking to live alone? I'm hoping to get some personal perspectives on how "tight" living situations are with medial income and high rent? Do Vancouverites feel that pressure has caused them to think about other places in BC?
i've lived in vancouver since 1990, i think you've summarized the city pretty well. there's pros and cons to every place. p.s. when will you be signing with the canucks? 😉
Vancity is One of the best places to live in San Fran being one of the Worst # No5 Orange!! Its Sunny now..Hasnt rained in a month lol I wish we had a little more Snow in Nov and December I have Snow tires and was born and raised here lol
DTES danger is (somewhat) overrated. I'm a 5'8 disabled guy with zero fighting ability who's walked in the DTES very late at night, alone. If you don't bug them, they typically won't bug you. Obviously, it's recommended to keep your head on a swivel, don't listen to music, yadda yadda. And obviously, I'm still a guy - I assume my experience would be different if I was a woman or in an even worse mobility situation. Still, I think the whole violent crime BS is just the news media having a shitty day and reporting stuff that would've been ignored pre-2020.
Vancouver is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world and I’m happy that you found your happy place. I always enjoy myself when I visit but my friends who live there are often comment that the city is very unfriendly. Obviously, they have a terrible homeless problem which seems to be more and more common in all big cities in North America these days.
So beautiful. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
lol some honeymoon periods last longer than others, but depends where you're moving from I guess.. if it's anywhere else in Canada, you're living the dream for sure (small shoes to fill)
It can also come down to preferences and one's personal situation. You need money to live there. A working person will struggle there. And it used to be a very British place, as the native-settler population for English Canada is English and Scottish. But now it's very Chinese, especially in the younger demographics. So if you're young and want to find a partner who is Chinese, or you love that culture and that scene, then it's for you. Otherwise, you may feel quite isolated and experience cultural clashes. We live among other people, not as individuals, and so it's a very significant aspect of life there.
One reason why Vancouver is expensive is a lot of investors bought real estate. I know of people who bought 3 -6 houses or an entire floor of a new condo complex for investment about 10 years ago. It was expensive then, but now, it is unaffordably expensive. At best, one can hope to buy a crappy 700 sq ft condo that will need fixing after your collective tenants pour congealed fat to clog the main plumbing stacks.
Thanks for the great video, My company has recently approached and asked if I would consider moving here, I work in cyber security. I love biking and hiking, currently reside in Ireland. Any other advice would be much appreciated. 🙂
Good video. Can't say I share your enthusiasm for Vancouver though, it's just way too expensive and full of social problems. I lived there for about 9 years well before it got into the deep affordability crisis it now enjoys - I liked it for a while... I can see why tourists would like it for a visit.
happy we share it! I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)

great video - made me appreciate Vancouver more Moved here in 2007 from US never ever looked back. Here is how I see it differently: food is AMAZING and so reasonable to literally eat out every day, THERE IS NO CRIME !!! Have no idea what you are talking about as far as some "scary violent crime" it is the safest place in maybe the entire world - Of course I came from gun happy murder and weapon capital Virginia where school shootings are a normal part of life. Vancouver has been the absolutely best place to raise kids and I am so grateful to live here. PS it is really complicated and hard to immigrate here so very very happy to be past all that hard work and just enjoy now being a citizen. Street addicts are not dangerous here like in the US there are no weapons on the street. This is all from a privileged white lady - if I was Indigenous the story would be very different. But that would take another big comment
Random stabbings weekly downtown Vancouver, where have you been? Shootings in Surrey all the time to the point they rarely even make the news anymore. I’ve been here for 30 years and looking to either move to Calgary or the US ideally, could I take your citizenship over in the states? 😂😂
@@KeatonDee WOW sure.I don't think you have an idea of what it is like to live in many parts of he US where 70 - 80 % of your neighbours have multiple guns, 150 gun related crimes in a two week period in close vicinity to your home in a small city (Virginia) and, as in my case, a neighbourhood school shooting happens the year your kid is ready for kindergarten. etc. Open carry. anyone ? Vancouver is a great place but i disagree it’s where you’ll have the best quality of life. The rain really gets you down and even if you tolerate it, I find I was much happier living in Calgary where it’s sunny every day and people tend to be much nicer in places that get more sun. Not to mention the cost of living in Van being so high that really brings down your quality of life easily by needing to live in a crappy apartment or having to commute from far outside of the city for your job. I personally feel at the moment, vancouver is not worth the hype.

Given the housing purchase costs here how do residents keep paying rent after they retire? Is there government assistance toward rent after retirement?
Of all the Vancouver vlogs, this one is at least somewhat honest. Kudos for mentioning the DTES and the rising crime. It's just as much a part of the city as its natural beauty. I lived in Vancity for 13 years. It's the Rolls Royce of cities. Is it nice? Of course it is. BUT it better be when you're forced to pay the asking price. For the average working class citizen, it's a raw deal no matter how you spin it.

@@trav4oilers just over a year, but if you drive more you’ll save some money. If you drive about 20k a year you’ll break even because the actual collision insurance is about 2000 more than a regular vehicle
In few words: If you are ok living in a 500 sq/ft shoe box and ready to give up the freedom of owning your own transportation, Vancouver is the city for you. If you are Canadian and your choice is either Vancouver or shoveling snow in winter in the rest of the country and you do not mind a very lousy job market, the city may look like paradise on earth. About the author describing Vancouver as "the best city in Northamerica" evidently he did not travel that much in the continent outside of Canada (the fact he considers Vancouver beaches "great" is a strong hint). Vancouver is definitely a nice city and the best that Canada can offer but I would use the superlatives more sparingly...if you can legally live in the US there are overall much better choices.

Everything was spot on and all your footage was awesome but tbh i moved here last year and only spend $1500 and live right near you.. and I’m not that scared when I’m having to go to east van even at night but wouldn’t suggest going and hanging out around there.
youre lucky living at that price! Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
Great vid bud. Visited Vancouver many times and hoping to move there one day
What a place to be :)
Vancouver is great city to tour around! I love Stanley park! And Squamish and Whistler is breath taking! North Vancouver got real nice housing that way! Great video! Best of luck this season! 👊🏼
Unaffordable housing but hella nice housing
I've lived in and around Vancouver pretty much my entire life, and honestly I agree with just about everything in this video.
You must be RICH
Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
Excellent video. I happened to be born in Vancouver and I'm also "in constant gratitude and appreciation" for being able to live here.
It's a great mindset to have. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)
I kinda love the snow though
You got a good year weather-wise, there are some summers where it still rains 10-15 days a month & the winter was real, with more snow than the city typically gets (where it is usually rain).
it absolutely was a great weather year. thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
I love Vancouver! Seems like a really cool city! Hope you enjoy living there! I bet the Richmond Olympic Oval is super awesome!
It's a beautiful facility! thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
What A VIDEO ✅ A beautiful place and one that I love to call home,, but nothing is perfect. FACTS
Great visuals and shots my man 🤙
You're my fav vancouver youtuber, let's go!
Vancouver is the nicest place I’ve ever been to.
It's truly a stunning place
The Couver needs to build an HSR underwater to Naniamo on Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island is big enough to develop and still have plenty of wild wilderness left.
I would love to see that, would be an incredibly long project away but def great idea. thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
I made it out to Vancouver last fall for my first time and it was breathe taking! definitely just a place for me to visit, but I can see why living there would be great!
Living is def awesome, just expensive as all hell
Big like, thank you. Moving there soon, just finalising the visa. Had some doubts still should I move or just stay in London and you convinced me. 🙏

9:57 Second and Third beach in Stanley Park, but the sea line is covered in rock that you can't swim, but still relax on the beach with park behind you.
I found that out the hard way haha thanks for watching, have you seen my 2 year video?
Nice video. I remember when River District was nothing and it seemed to have propped up overnight. At the moment many people there seem to own cars, but I wished that they ran more bus schedules for the area! Used to work nearby and the bus was very rare
I don't live there anymore but it's crazy to see old photos of it. I love Vancouver so much, and I'll have a 2 year recap at some point but I'm doing a series on the grand railway hotels of Canada starting next month, including the Hotel Vancouver here, you'll love them. Thanks for watching :)
Just an incredible place, it truly is awesome :)
Great video , love the way you tell a story. Keep up the good work. PS Surrey is not that bad and its more affordable than Vancouver but still close enough to enjoy its fruit.
Story is key! Thank you so much for the comment and watching :)

@@trav4oilers @trav4oilers Have you done the walk that starts behind Park Royal Mall. going West? The path goes through a tunnel of trees and opens to Lions Gate bridge view. The path forks , going right is for cyclists and left for pedestrians to the open ocean view. Walk past the area open for dogs and come to the main parking area for cars looking to enjoy the view. The path goes all the way to Dundarave. It is my favourite walking path in the whole city, and beats the nice UBC, 10th, 8th ave walk towards the city, and down towards Kitsilano,,staying close to the ocean view side (Point Grey Rd to Cornwall).
I wish videos like this would specify CAD or USD when giving prices. There’s a big difference.
If you got money yes, if not then no. It's expensive

Probably never but you never know ;)

Electricity in BC is produced by Hydro, 100% renewable. That's why charging is cheaper than gas.
i was incorrect! in manitoba it is
11:00 our power comes from hydro not gas. Natural gas might be used in some cases just to make up small surges as it’s ash to ramp up.

The sun is a beautiful thing. Thanks for watching Amber. You may be the only conservative woman in the entire city!
I have been there at night many times. There is a concert venue right there on Hastings and Main. Not really dangerous from what I’ve seen.

Vancouver is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in the world and I’m happy that you found your happy place. I always enjoy myself when I visit but my friends who live there are often comment that the city is very unfriendly.
I agree, vancouver is for the elites

One reason why Vancouver is expensive is a lot of investors bought real estate. I know of people who bought 3 -6 houses or an entire floor of a new condo complex for investment about 10 years ago. It was expensive then, but now, it is unaffordably expensive. At best, one can hope to buy a crappy 700 sq ft condo that will need fixing after your collective tenants pour congealed fat to clog the main plumbing stacks.
I'll have to do a follow part 2 video this in the next month or so for you :)

Def vancouver, thanks for watching the travel vlog man and hope you enjoy my other videos :)
great video - made me appreciate Vancouver more Moved here in 2007 from US never ever looked back.
@@KeatonDee WOW sure.I don't think you have an idea of what it is like to live in many parts of he US where 70 - 80 % of your neighbours have multiple guns, 150 gun related crimes in a two week period in close vicinity to your home in a small city (Virginia) and, as in my case, a neighbourhood school shooting happens the year your kid is ready for kindergarten. etc. Open carry. anyone

I didn’t realize that if you move somewhere in January that by August you have lived there for a year
I figured with all the months travelling and living here, plus moving here full time, just round up to the 1 year mark, whoops
@@trav4oilers hey man, carry the one, round up, give or take plus with the time zone change she's been a year. Rooting for you this upcoming season brother
I was planning on doing a Seattle/Vancouver trip in late September. Would you recommend I still do it? I’ve just been seeing a lot of videos on homelessness and drug problems in the city which is got me worried about enjoying the trip
Honestly the homeless/drug problem shouldn’t be what makes you stay away from Vancouver. As long as you avoid East Hastings street you’ll be quite fine. It’s a beautiful city/province with lots going on.
@@aidanjohnston2488 sweet ok that’s good to know. Do you know if it’s difficult to cross the border between Seattle and Vancouver? I have to fly into Seattle then I was going to cross the border and spend a couple nights in Vancouver and Victoria
@@tristanc5937 I’m Canadian so I’ve never been stopped/put into secondary coming from the Washington border going back into BC. Don’t be a dick and just be honest I guess?
Both of those are brutal here but hope it changes
@@tristanc5937 I live in Seattle and yes the homelessness is pretty substantial in both cities with Seattle probably being worse. As for crossing the border, going into Canada is a breeze, their border crossing is nice and considerably quicker than going back to the United States.
Given the housing purchase costs here how do residents keep paying rent after they retire? Is there government assistance toward rent after retirement?
they don't lol
Of all the Vancouver vlogs, this one is at least somewhat honest. Kudos for mentioning the DTES and the rising crime. It's just as much a part of the city as its natural beauty. I lived in Vancity for 13 years. It's the Rolls Royce of cities. Is it nice? Of course it is. BUT it better be when you're forced to pay the asking price. For the average working class citizen, it's a raw deal no matter how you spin it.

I drive a tesla in vancouver, unfortunately with our outrageous insurance prices we just about break even on the electricity savings :)
So it's all a wash, how long you had the tesla?

Well Done! Welcome to the Lower Mainland. Just so everyone knows, all electricity in B.C. is generated by Hydroelectric power. So, no greenhouse gas emissions.
