      I like Edge of Tomorrow's time system for another reason: It's biological. We don't see a lot of biologically based time travel mechanics, but when it shows up it works better than time machines being made, because making a time machine implies it always existed, since it's always had the capability to go backwards in time. I mean, you'd think people would've put up a little more resistance to mandatory unpaid leave from their jobs for a couple weeks, several months of a mandate to wear suffocating and ineffective dirty rags over their mouths and noses, most businesses being shut down temporarily and many permanently...when the government goes for something people can be _alarmingly_ eager to just roll with it no matter how stupid it may be.

    When i saw the first trailer I figured the future people weren't what they seemed and were manipulating humanity for some goal. Mainly because the idea of "come with us to the future to fight a losing war" was so ridiculous I didn't think someone would write that unironicly. That is the most nonsensical time travel contrivance ever.

    • @jazz-cat00
      @jazz-cat00 3 года назад +74

      That's what my first thought was too. It would've been better imo if the twist was that they weren't from the future but from a different dimension that was dealing with this war but was running out of -cannon fodder- soldiers, so they went around to similar universes telling everyone that their dimension hopping machine was a time machine to keep getting new recruites. Hell, the reveal of the monsters could've also been a twist that would've given away that this was not the future earth, explaining why the "future" guys didn't want to tell anyone what the aliens looked like because that would've blown their while cover.

    • @alexanderrichards239

      @@alexanderrichards239 basic paradox theory. The moment they took people to their timeline they created an alternate timeline. If they prepared the people in the past for the war their own timeline would still be fucked up since they've alternated events. Basically saving the past would only save the mcs timeline, and the timeline fighting the war would still be messed up with humans extinction.

    • @GentlemanlyPenguin
      @GentlemanlyPenguin 3 года назад +17

      @@sleepdeprived7879 That solves one plot hole, but creates another one. Perhaps it's addressed in the movie (I doubt it), but why would the mc's timeline be so willing to send everyone to die to save a completely different timeline? Do they not know this fact and think saving the future timeline will somehow save their own? Even if humans were somehow so altruistic that they'd give everything to save others, the human cost in doing so is far worse than allowing the humans in the other timeline to die out, given how massive the casualties of this war seem to be by delving into mass civilian recruitment.

    I know this isn't a serious movie but it's pretty insulting to humanity to think they would just curl into a ball and give up when confronted by big lizard beasts given the horror of the last few centuries of war.
    We have seen atom bomb ghost shapes burned into the concrete at Nagasaki and Hiroshima. We have seen mustard gas and incendiary grenades. We have seen napalm stuck to kids still burning under the water they thought would save them. We have seen heavy machine guns turn tens of thousands of men into red mist and bloody chunks - in a single day. We have seen diseased bodies hurled over castle walls and men's heads explode under the feet of elephants. Men have had to sleep with their clothes stained with the blood and brains of their best friends.
    I don't think spying some space lizards, no matter how fearsome, would have us throw in the towel and welcome our species' demise.

Basically they send soldiers to fight some alien species in a war far off in space- and because time passes differently in space by the time they come back humanity has evolved into some freakish hivemind. There's some flaws, but I believe the author was going for a scary 'what if' situation. It's part of a three part series, the aforementioned title being book one.

      issue with just prepping, is that everyone in the future who can´t travel back cause they have a younger version in 2020, would have to be left for dead, sure that´s a better plan objectively, than sacrificing god knows how many from the past, extending the lifespan of some future people for maybe a few months... especially when it´s all for nothing anyhow...
      but the future people are the ones making the plans, they´re the ones who know what is going on, (while seemingly leaving the past in the dark) and they´re bound to be somewhat selfish. so their plan isn´t to win the war at any cost, creating a future with 8 billion people and no invasion... but to win in their timeline at any cost saving their 500 thousand.
      though I doubt that´s what the directors had in mind, just the way I see it.
      their selfish plan turns out to be for nothing anyhow as the movie ends in a way in which future humanity is destroyed, and in which the toxin meant to save them, just made the mission to destroy the aliens pre-emptively more dangerous and likely to fail... they walked around setting up explosives just fine, right until they started injecting them, at which point they awoke... they could´ve seemingly just as well shot them... or just blown up the spaceship and been fine.

    Great review Mr. Possum, Sir - just one little correction 😅:
    Chris Pratt's character (don't remember the name and don't care) doesn't have PTSD. In the original timeline there was no time travel from the Tomorrow War (i mean the timeline his future daughter lived in...).
    Instead he left his family because he never got the job he wanted. Which might be worse than his dad leaving him because of his PTSD and anger problems...
    This story is a mess anyway and was probably rewritten many times, so i believe they just forgot this little detail when creating the comparison between Chris Pratt and his dad. It's funnier this way 😄

    It would make more sense if the war was a lot _further_ in the future: then there could be a civilizational collapse between now and then, so anything _we_ did would be lost in the intervening centuries. [1] You could argue that the people in the future could help us avoid said collapse, but heck, the future people could just say we're such short-sighted, self-deluded pricks that no amount of advice would save us from screwing up - and given the last few decades, I'd have trouble saying they were wrong.
    [1] Which was part of the backstory for SF writer Clifford Simak's "Our Children's Children", which has some similarities to this story, only rather than us going into the future to fight the aliens it's the future people going as one-way refugees into the past, because the invading monsters were in fact highly intelligent, the size of elephants, and resistant to anything short of heavy artillery.

The ones that make it get up and are like "ok, this keep going" and they complete their mission and get ready to leave where they have to rendezvous with troops that are already on the ground and are better trained and packing heavy weapons and transport but get wiped out because they weren't wearing plot-armour. The commander lady then spends the rest of the mission shouting "get outa there" over and over which isn't a very good way to avoid the pending bombing run. Wouldn't it be easier to just delay or re-schedule the bombs? Then when the survivors return to base there isn't a confrontation where Owen Grady gets to tell the commander lady off for fucking up the deployment, the troop rendezvous, the bombing run, the useless orders and everything else that went wrong. He just wonders through the camp and agrees to go on the next mission because the last one went so well.

    What’s the opposite of disappointment? Cause that’s basically what I felt while watching the movie. Based on the trailers, I’d already decided the movie sucked, so I found myself enjoying it more than I expected because of that. It had more emotion than I expected, but like Possum said in this video and another recent video, I am so tired of movies needing to be like Marvel and just throwing in annoying one liners and quips that undermine the entire scene. It’s like, the producers read the script, get through a scene and say, “Where’s the funny? Didn’t laugh in the last 2 minutes, fix it,” then throw it back at the writers. Same thing happened in Mortal Kombat, a scene wasn’t finished until there was a funny.

      your lowered expectations made the movie better. I don't think marvel is shaping the funny one liners. they have always existed. I think the people making movies don't understand why the line is funny or why it is important or relevant in the movie experience. "Get to the chopper" isn't funny on its own. the actor going over the top with the line made it epic but also funny. I feel the one liners can give us a social bonding moment being able to repeat a quick one line in our every day life to remind us of a enjoyable action slog or interesting movie with a good one line quote from it. A way to add relevance and connection in our lives with a fun moment and someone else that is with us. I would say the line, "get to the chopper" while having to run through the rain to get to the car parked at the far end of the parking lot with a few friends with me would make the bad moment less bad giving the moment a feeling of comradery of doing an event together with the idea of it being an action scene. The current one liners are not something we can say in our every day lives they are only good for select context of what the joke was made for.

    As of my understanding of the future traveling logic on this movie, you don't change the future by changing the past, you only create an alternative future and end up having 2 different timelines.
    That's why saving the future's past by training people there would not make them more prepared on the current future, or leaving samples around would not make it appears in the doomed future.(like Dragonball z trunks timeline)
    The thing that really bothered me was this buildup for a biological weapon against the aliens, but it was all resolved by blowing up the ship anyways. So why the hell lose so much time creating it?
    Plus, one thing I'm noticing about modern movies is that they don't seem to know how to end a climax. The female mob at the end could have been eliminated by the arms injection and would be satisfying.
    Anyways the movie is not the best shit ever, but it's not that bad too.

Now I know that there would be many versions of the future in the same time when they give them the tech but they could just go back a couple of weeks even days ahead of when they received the tech, and despite the notion that this could cause a paradox just remember that Chris Pratt has memories of a future that didn’t happen , I.e. fighting in a war that he stopped in the past.

    Haven't actually seen it, but from your review I can already identify a couple problems I'd have with the movie based on your description:
    First issue: the time travel. Sounds like relativistic wormholes, which I've heard about as an IRL time travel theory where you create a wormhole in the present, and send one end into a time dilation effect so that the two ends wind up pointing at different points in time because they apparently treat relative time as absolute somehow (in contrast, what I want to create someday is a scifi where they keep it relative, so if the two ends have different dilation then you can wind up with objects passing through getting compressed or stretched depending on which side the dilation was on, with diseases possible from smaller impacts and nuclear fusion or complete disintegration from extreme effects). Aside from the whole method of creation being incompatible with the future travelling into the past because the IRL description requires creation in the past (I'll presume they can somehow create the other end in the past to begin with from here on), even this method allows for time travel between different points if you either create more then one or apply some dilation to one end or the other, so their 1:1 constriction would only make sense if there was some sort of resource shortage where they could only pull it once, which would be a pretty damned important point to make. This doesn't even touch on the question of paradoxes, which is a _huge_ issue with any kind of time travel story, you need to address whether they are possible or if you're looking at multiple timelines or what... the only way this movie's description would make sense is if you assume multiple timelines where the daughter is from timeline B, which watched timeline A (their "future" which does not actually appear in the film) die and is now contacting timeline C (the "past" of the movie) for help and hoping to avert their own destruction, suggesting that there are probably infinite timelines where most have been failing to defeat the aliens, but this falls apart with the daughter accusing the father of abandoning her (unless there was clear dialogue where she knows he is not her father and merely a duplicate from another timeline and she's trying to pre-empt that happing in his timeline).
    Sometimes I really think we need a whole new language just for time travel... I've heard good things about Lojban, I need to get around to learning that...

    Second issue: treating civilians like idiots. Refusing to show images because they're afraid of a panic? Hell no, implement them into the culture as villains like the freaking Xenomorphs and you'll get generations who would _love_ to slaughter them wholesale. Keep them mysterious and the conspiracy theorists would come out of the woodwork (on top of your own point of increasing fear)! Even if they had a lovecraftian mindscrew effect from their visual appearance it shouldn't work in pictures (at most they'd trigger phobias in some subsect of the population, and the worst I can think of is if they were giant spiders or literal killer clowns), especially if they weren't implementing some sort of 3D holographic modelling to completely recreate their 5-dimensional structure, or whatever it was that made the human mind break down while trying to comprehend it, in the past...

    9:14 Sooooo... those survivors she talks to in the group... did they just run into a group of aliens that weren't all that hungry? Or were they in the process of being eaten when their timer went off? Lucky that an alien never grabbed one of your guys AS their timer went off and got sent back to the past with them...

    Charlie's "shitstorm" down the stairs is the most realistic part of the fight. He's a terrified civilian who's already lost his wife to the war and is a nervous talker. It's totally in keeping with character and wasn't really funny so much as a "yeah, that would probably be me." Moment.

    The thing is that there isn't a single movie about time travel where the main issue is the time travel, even The Time Machine where the protagonist jumps millions of years into the future and is regarded as one of the best of it's genre has issues with it, might as well become a Cinemasins gag. Free time travel in itself is a paradox and the rules that "govern" it are paradoxical with each other so either you pick one and forget the others, or forget it.
    That being said, "why didn't they prepare against the aliens" was poorly managed by the movie, along with plenty other movie things, because just by them traveling to the past should create a paradox where that future wouldn't exist which would not send them to past so they couldn't warn the past which makes the future exist and travel to the past to warn the past and so on, so this has to be an alternate future, or a parallel future, and the main reason the future was drafting was to create the toxin, which the world leaders didn't know for some reason.
    tl;dr Time travel is a paradox on itself, complaining about it is like saying the sky is blue or apples are red and then ignoring that they aren't all the time. There are plenty more issues with the movie that could be picked, and choosing time travel is like picking the safest choice for people to agree with you.

      Agreed. I cannot think of a single Time Travel movie that has something off. Even if that something off is that fixing the timeline would eliminate any reason for them to do so in the first place.
      I.E. Avengers Endgame. They said screwing something up in the past will create an alternate reality, so wouldn’t killing Thanos’s past self do that too? Or wouldn’t Captain America going back in time to live until he was an old man do the same?
      Or Terminator. Skynet was created from the remains of the same exact Terminator Unit that it personally sent back in time itself?

    Why does the time travel work like rafts going down a river? Why didn't the future scientists send at least some data to the past?
    ... Why did the goblin turn on the stove?

    • @mallios13
      @mallios13 3 года назад

      It works that way because the story needs it to. If you can just travel to any point in time you need to, it guts the suspense the story needs to have. They also aren't consistent with it, because the explanation cites that time is a single current, yet they play upon the idea of different timelines. There's an utter lack of temporal mechanics going on here. Their description makes it sound like time travel would be a closed loop, yet it obviously isn't, so the "raft" idea is invalid.

    Bless you kind sir. I had such a problem with all these people being drafted to fight and the future folk still not revealing, at least offscreen what the Whitespikes looked like. The logic made no sense as everyone was already forced to fight.

    He didn't Abandon them, she's from a timeline in which they didn't know about the war, after he didn't get that job from the opening he and his wife drifted apart and ended up getting a divorce, two years after the divorce while he was driving to her birthday party he died in a car accident, that's what she meant by he left them. In her timeline he never went to the war he died 23 yrs before the war started.
