- No need for pulleys, cables or bungie cords, this retractable, kick up rudder can be operated with one hand in one simple movement! As work progresses on the sailing tender, for Steve Denette's Arabella, Bob comes up with a simple kick up rudder. Using a re-salvaged tiller and recycled material you won't believe how well it works. In addition to the White Oak cheeks and the Mahogany blade boat builder Bob Emser cast some custom bronze Pintle and Gudgeons and other bronze fitting for the Dinghy Victoria.
“If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.”

This literally is the art of boat building!
I saw diagrams that felt a little like the science of boatbuilding but I’m giving him a pass this one time
@@MikeWest_W indeed it is. Hope he made a spare too. Rudders have a tendency to break at the most inappropriate time. And sure it might be unlikely. Yet the blade...
My heart broke a little bit when the mahogany was painted white.
The perfect marriage of form and function. True genius.
I am absolutely stunned by the beauty of this craftsmanship! ❤❤❤
Totally an artist!
Wow Bob! Another well thought out project with spectacular beautifully crafted parts that works magnificently. Well done again and thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Looks pretty AND works!….perfect.
Beautiful
Bob that rudder is a piece of art! Just asking: do you need to grease or oil the moving parts? I am thinking along the lines of corrosion protection. It is a lovely piece of work. Skills my friend skills.
👍
What an elegant piece of work. I am thinking how perfectly this little jewel of a tender will enhance Arabella. Top level video pedagogy, as well.
This episode could have easily been an hour longer. So much fun to watch!
Ingenious design and well built 👏
An elegant rudder for the elegant Victoria.
So true. I too was so engaged that I check the episode length, hoping it was longer than usual.
An episode full of so many skills; casting, machining and metal work, and wood working. All coming together with a big dose of Bob Emser ingenuity. Well done and bravo!
Excellent comment, Drop_D Tuned. Nice to see a fellow guitarist following this channel. Cheers!
Thank you @Todd Brown! Keep on pick’n and grin’ng🎸
Also 3D modelling and 3D printing. What a great episode.
Well this episode was one of my favorites. A true example of The Art of Boat Building and a fine example of a combination of trades.
Well Done!
It amazes me. . . an idea in your head, designed onto paper, made into parts, assembled on the boat, and have it actually work! Beautifully done.
That's lovely. But I think a bit of threadlock on the pivot screws might be called for. (Also maybe make a couple of spare screws to keep in the boat, as losing one would leave you with a rudder that keeps floating up)
I was going to suggest the same. Last thing Steve will want to do is source one-off fasteners in some distant port.
Yes!
Hi Bob, did you make spare fasteners for the rudder? Those custom parts would be a challenge to make when Arabella is out and about.
You've gone from fine engineering to pure art! You are a master! That rudder is a superb piece of craftsmanship. We are NOT yet doomed! Thank you!
Hmmm Silver solder tension connrction> Would be stronger if thraded connection
That's what I thought too, but I looked it up and apparently silver soldering is actually almost as strong as welding when it comes to tensile strength.
Ok , I’m well and truly impressed ! Excellent craftsmanship, and a wonderful rudder 😃😃🍻
Excellent workmanship. Engineering and artistic concepts merge in perfection. It is beautiful!
Nice! Mixed medium precision. Wood, brass, epoxy, each designed and brought together for a nifty solution to a real world need.
The flip action of the rudder looks so smooth, efficient, and effective. Bob certainly put his signature on this one.
Thanks for sharing.
Lovely work, Bob! It looks beautiful and works amazingly! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I feel like I’m watching the boat version of New Yankee workshop with Norm! Great stuff.
Phenomenal Bob. Excellent work. Thank you for this presentation.
Absolutely beautiful work Bob, Victoria will outlive all of us.
That is a brilliant bit of innovation Bob. Food for though for my next build for sure.
A true masterclass of concept, design and execution. Is there anything you cannot turn your hand to? A real pleasure to watch.
That is a brilliant piece of engineering. Would love to have these on my boat.
You know, there's people that do what they can. And then there's people that do what they want...
You do beautiful work Robert. Your video’s are most enjoyable to watch.
Thank you from Missouri.
Excellent solution. Very classy and functional.
Amazing skills…beautiful work of art, called a rudder.
Excellent work! Construction seems to be simple, but reliable and very convenient to use!
Such wonderful craftsmanship. Just beautiful work. Many thanks for sharing this with us all.
Damn Bob, beautiful work on this one. The tender is really coming together!
Truly, I've raced Lasers and 470's with retracting rudders, yet have never seen one so elegant. Bob, your a joy to watch, simply magnificent piece of quality furniture.
What a joy to see someone using feet, inches, fractional inches, thou, letter drills, TPI, etc. People who only use metric units don't realise how intuitive, flexible and useful imperial units can be. Some of them think we are idiots stuck in the past. I was lucky to have been raised with both. One of my most useful little books gives a table comparing mm with fractional inches, number and letter drills, etc. As you say, you can move stepwise up the diameters only a few thou at a time using all these different series. My machine tools have leadscrews of 8 TPI, so why would I want to junk them for expensive new machines with metric leadscrews? Or junk my imperial micrometers? Or my BA/ME/Whit/BSF taps and dies? Or my toolroom 6" ruler - by far the clearest ruler I've ever owned.
Your attention to detail is fantastic, so impressed
What a life man! Big ass shed, all the tools, working with bronze, mahogany, oak, adapting, inventing, one-offs...jeez, i bet you dont want to go home. Very nice work btw, top notch.
That is one beautiful piece of workmanship. Congratulations!!
Great work! Ingeneous and well executed!
You accidentally uploaded it in 360p. Please re-upload it in 1080p.
Was just about to comment on that too.
This was one of my favorite episode's. If this type of rudder accidentally hits an unmovable underwater obstruction will the impact automatically retract the rudder or is human intervention necessary?
Amazing and enjoying to watch. This is art and all done using the Imperial Measurement system.
A really piece of art, great desing and awesome buil execution
Wow, that’s a lesson in true craftsmanship. Very impressive indeed and a pleasure to watch
Very interesting and intriguing how you solved the problem… Must see TV😂😂👍😎
What a good idea, thank you!
Now that's one very cool retractable rudder! Nice work on that.
Very nice job. Beautiful. A lot of time spent. You are very good builder.
i'm 5 and a half minutes in and this is easily my favorite video from the channel. had to stop and comment. nice work! i wish you would post the geometry of the rudder so i can build one for my pram
I've never built a boat. However, I own land on an isolated lake and desire to build a beautiful sailing dory from local wood. I find your "Art of Boat Building" channel very inspiring. Thank you
16:20 I can see why they call them cheeks. 😊
F****** Brilliant! Thanks for sharing...and teaching?!
I have learned alot watching you work. I am impressed.
Loctite on some those pins & screws
I would use it on the threaded pins, I would not use it on the screws though. The screws will need to be removed periodically, and bronze screws tend to get gunked with corrosion anyway. If anything I would put wax or some other anti-seize to keep them usable. If those threads get too tight you'll end up spinning that inner nut, and then you'll have to drill them out to get it apart.
very hight class work all my respect and admiration guillaume paris
That rudder not only looks great but it also is functional! Great job bob!
Absolutely the best episode yet of all your builds!
You shot yourself in the foot a bit there. You set out to make something that can be disassembled then made it so pretty that anyone would weep at the idea of disassembling it!
Bob, this rudder is amazing! The bronze work looks like jewelry!
Wow this is such a beautiful piece of work. This is going to one stunning tender.
beautiful build. Very satisfying functionality ;-)
If you're going to make it make it Beautiful and that you've done Bob
SWEET!!!!!!!! Magic! I did one similar to this to replicate a kickup for a Vagabond 14. I did the same process with templates
It did work but you added some ART with the old tiller too. BRILLIANT! Nice nice work!
Nice to see a fellow San Luis Yacht Club Staff Commodore following this channel. Beautiful work. I picked up on this channel after following Acorn to Arabella for the last several years!!!
Did anyone else move their head to the side to try to see around the hammer when Bob drove the pin in the pintle?
16:40 Great job designing it to be taken apart. Not only will that mechanism need to be accessed, the inner faces will need to be cleaned periodically if it's in the water for extended time as Steve plans to do.
Tis a privilege to watch you work. Thank you,
It’s a real joy to watch a true craftsman ply their trade with the quality of work that you do in every video. This was a very enjoyable video to watch and to see the rudder go from a thought to a finished product. Just curious, after getting everything just right, do you add any thread lock to the threaded connections?
fantastic craftmanship. thanks for the great viewing
Great idea and perfect execution. I've been waiting for this episode. Thank you and best regards
Thanks you for all your episodes. This one particulary is full of amazing skils, and didactics teachings. I really admire your work!!!
Absolutely awesome. I may make one for my PT-11.
Excellent work sir! Congratulations
You designed a clever four bar linkage for the tiller.
Wow, more beautiful, functional artwork!
Fascinating and absolutely wonderful craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing your methods.
Mr. Emser,
You are simply the best. I'm really impressed. You are a true professional.
Greetings from The Netherlands
Very beautiful
Great craftsmanship
👍👍👍 from France
Another cracking episode! I did find I had to keep adjusting the volume on this one tho. Keep up the amazing work dude.
Bob has so many talents! Working with metal may just be his best tho. He really knows how to work with pretty much anything he puts his mind too tho.
Nice engineering combined with outstanding craftsmanship created the marvelous rudder..
My goodness, you are an excellent craftmans
Just amazing as always Bob. Great work!
What an elegant solution.
Would it perhaps be worth drilling the pins that hold the rudder in position for cotter pins whilst it is in use?
The “d” shaped ones are easy to insert/remove.
I was thinking that too, not least because the wooden rudder probably wants to float.
Excellent quality, Sir! :-)
This will be the first time a boat's tender is better looking and better built than the boat.
So elegant, Bob. Beautiful work.
Genius. So many skills at play here.
Thar looks great Bob! You are a true craftsman.
Wow....what a combination of skills.
Very nicely done Bob
Great video Bob. What a nice little piece of craftsmanship.
potassium dichromate.... I'm guessing that made Gustav Stickley a bit of money. you are an artist. thanks.
Gustav mostly fumed his oak with ammonia. I don't think he ever used dichromates, but I suppose it is possible he did.
Well, it is beautiful! Thanks Bob!
Very interesting video 🇬🇧 👍
You are amazing. A good watch.
Amazing!! Love the channel
Fantastic job on that rudder. Beautiful job.
Well, it works pretty good, I’m very pleased with that.
YOU SHOULD BE, Bob! This was wonderful to watch
