    Very helpful, thanks! Video summary for those who just need the quick answer: We’ve been told to soak beans overnight, but if you need them sooner, soak beans for a minimum of 4.5 hours until the skin of the bean is smooth, no wrinkles. Dump out the water the beans soaked in, and rinse before cooking 😃

    Omg,thank you so much, I actually threw a whole bag of beans away, cuz after soaking them for about three hours they were all wrinkled and busted, so I thought I'd just had a bad bag, now I know I should have just let them soak longer, which I will be doing tonight

      Hi G Bozack. Yes, these dried beans need really long time to soak, we need to allow time for them to absorb enough water until they expand double in size. So the water must also be at least 4 - 5 times more than the beans. Usually, I will soak it overnight and sometimes more than 6 hours. Hope this helps.😀

      @@HomeCookingwithSomjit yes it definitely helped, I did make red beans and rice tonight, and everyone loved it, just an FYI, I'm not sure if you mentioned it,but when I soak my beans I like to soak them in baking soda, because it takes out the gas, and for my family members that had a second helping,I'm sure they appreciated that.😁

      @nouranashraf2816. It's ok if the color just fed off a bit as it's natural and part of the cooking process. Usually cooked food color always deviates from its original color. Canned food is a factory processed food and usually, added preservatives and color to make it look as original as possible. Some added preservatives may also cause serious health issues for us consumers.

      Hi Neela Chowhan. Soak in cold water. If the beans are soak up enough water it should take just about 1.30 hours to boil until till soft. usually I will soak the red bean overnight. 😊😊i

    I never soak the bears before boiling,they turned out very well too.Takes about 45 minutes they are done,unless there’s a health theory behind soaking them .If it’s just to see how much water absorbed it’s not a problem.

    Thank you very much. But 5-6days in the fridge is just too small. The process and long time of cooking would make me want to cook a lot and leave in the freezer so I just microwave when I need to add to my family meal. Will it lose its nutritional value if it stays in the freezer and how long can it be there? Thank you for the visuals. God bless you.

    Is it natural for the beans to lose colour after soaking? Or it is some kind of colouring applied to them?

      Hi shuayb mohd, thank you for the comment 😀 Yes, it's completely natural; there's no colouring on the beans. After soaking, the beans will expand and become soft; and their colour will lighten in process. Hope it helps 😀

      Hi Twitchy Eyeone, thank you for the comment 😀 I used room temperature water from the tap. You can use cold water as well. Try to avoid using hot or warm water as it may affect pre-cook the kidney beans and affect its water absorption abilities. Hope it helps 😀

Or should I heat up the water first. I am sorry if this is a retarded question. I’m living by myself for the first time and I don’t really have a lot of experience with cooking.

      Hi Twitchy Eyeone, thank you for sharing more information with me 😀 I've never been in Antarctic temperatures before, so I'm happy to learn something new in your daily life! It is not a retarded question at all. In fact, I apologize for assuming that you have tropical weather, where it's hot and humid all year round.
      Will water at 50°C / 122°F retain its liquid form for 6 hours? If it does, then the kidney beans can be soaked in the water. After 6 hours, or once its size has doubled, it can be strained to use, or kept frozen in ice (to be thawed before use).
      If not, then may I suggest an alternative method to cook the kidney beans? It involves repeatedly boiling the kidney beans with a metal utensil, until the beans have fully expanded. Here's the link to the method if you would like it: ruclips.net/video/FUc7V1-Hpcw/видео.html

      Hi Sculpture., thank you for the question 😀 I'm not sure as I've never thought about having the kidney beans raw after soaking. I've been taught to cook them always before consuming them. As you seem to have consumed them after soaking, it does not seem to be an issue? 😀

      @@HomeCookingwithSomjit i do face discomfort in my stomach even if i eat just a handful of soaked kidney beans. So i researched and yesterday i came across an article which said that raw beans, especially red kidney beans contain lectins that are harmful and must be destroyed during the process of cooking. Different lectins have a different impact on the body and that's why beans and grains must not be eaten uncooked and raw and i guess that makes sense why i was facing the issues.       Hi pixeldot434, thanks for the question. Yes, it's safe to drink the water that the beans are boiled in as it is nutritious - as long as it's boiled in drinking water. A little sugar can be added according to taste as well 😄

    I soaked my beans for 2 days and it was still very difficult to cook. Does it mean the beans is not good?

      Hi John-Paul Chidili & Elena сд . I am not sure if it is not good. Usually, it takes around 6 - 8 hours for the beans to absorb enough water. Once absorbed enough water, it takes just about 1-2 hours to cook and become soft. Also, my mom told me not to boil the beans together with sugar, as it is hard to become soft or it won't be cooked at all. Not sure why, I have tried it and it was true. I guess old grandma has more cooking experience. 😀😀 Once the beans are soft and cooked, then we add sugar if cooking dessert 😀😀

    I read that kidney beans are toxic.. how would I be able to make sure they aren’t toxic anymore? Trying to cook new foods for myself and my 1 year old. Thanks in advance!

      Hi Crissy Young, thanks for the question. It's impressive that you're cooking new foods for you and your kid 😄 I've read on that topic as well - boiling the beans for over 30 minutes would help in extracting the toxins. If this method is followed (soaking 6 hours to overnight, and boiling the beans over medium heat for 1 hour), the kidney beans's toxins will be removed, and it will be soft and delicious to be incorporated in other meals 😄 Hope this helps!

      Crissy Young they are only toxic until cooked, just make sure they are cooked till soft. Also they ate not extremely toxic to people more so to animals chickens is what I heard, but best to be safe with children. Just cook them well.

      after soaking make sure that when cooking them they boil for at least 10 minutes before you turn the heat down to simmer. if you make sure to do that they should be safe. if you are unsure about your little one eating them stick to the tinned varieties or use a different dried bean. x

      To answer your question, kidney beans should be soaked for 4 hours minimum, or until the skin has no more wrinkles before cooking. Hope it helps 😀

    ehhh sometimes i soak the beans for two days str8, changing the water and they still wont soften up even after boiling for an hour :(

      Hi WaitingforDarkness1982, thank you for the comment 😀 For the soaking time, I find that once the kidney beans has fully absorbed the water, they won't be able to absorb any more, even if they had a longer time to soak.
      With boiling, I'm sorry to hear that 😥 I find that usually, if an hour is not enough, I would continue to let it boil beyond an hour until they become soft. No salt, sugar or any other seasonings should be added as those tend to keep the beans very firm if they have not softened. Hope it helps 😀

      If i may suggest a trick, try cooking them in rice cooker. My standard cheap ass Kmart rice cooker cooks them usually in 50 minutes. Atleast that's what my mom taught me and it works.
