  • We conclude our time in North Carolina and continue on through South Carolina in this video. Putting in longer days is necessary to meet up with family in Savannah for Christmas, so we keep moving as opposed to lingering at interesting places. But we hope to do that on the way back north. As we approached Southport we entered a large shipping channel at sunset to make it to a free dock behind the Provisions Restaurant there. Fortunately there were no freighters in the channel, navigating our way there using our online tools (AquaMaps & B&G) and when we arrived a nice man helped catch our lines. That night we walked to WalMart and won't do that again. The last photo in this video was taken at the tail end of that 3 mile walk. We saw parts of Southport I don't think we'll ever see again.
The next day though our radio stopped working, so we had to make some calls, find a replacement, line up an Uber from a marina with fuel and a pump out and make it back in time to anchor before dark. This would be the day we had 3 of the 11 bridges to contact (we just phoned them, that worked) - it was stressful but we worked through it.
We're noticing the current and tides playing a larger part in our journey now. At one anchorage Rand chased down a funnel paddling the dingy and had difficulty getting back to the boat (scary - this happened at night). There's fog also in the mornings, we waited a little longer this time and somehow managed to make it to the next stop before dark.
The map of where we stayed is found at this link: www.google.com...
ICW Part I: Annapolis, MD to Chesapeake, VA
    • ICW Part 1: Annapolis,...
ICW Part II: Chesapeake VA to Morehead City NC • ICW Part II: Chesapeak...
In this video we stayed at:
    Mile Hammock Bay, Onslow, NC
    Provisions Restaurant, Southport, NC
Calabash Creek, NC (lost the funnel here)
Waccanaw River, NC/SC (the day the radio broke)
    Myrtle Beach, SC
We were spared injury or damage:
strayed off course into shallow water but didn't run aground
Rand was able to paddle back to the boat in the dark after retrieving the funnel (next time he'll let it go)
managing the currents and tides (they are tricky)
    anchoring & docking at night
