    The words "canon" and "non-canon" in ST has been carelessly used by so many people.
    ST:D was was an *alternate* reality -- which s05e10 of _Lower Decks_ used the gateway as part of their Multiverse exposition. Being part of an alternate reality in ST does *not* make an entire series non-canon.
    Note that _ST:TOS_ originally placed the Eugenics Wars in 1992. *_That_* was canon. Later series tried to stay away from the subject up until _ST:Ent,_ which showed Archer a certain IRL event in 2001 -- which logically separate _their_ reality from the TOS continuity -- which we'll call the "Prime" universe in this situation.
    The final episode of _ST:Ent_ gave more proof that they're separate from the Prime universe with the Paraagan colony explosion in the episode _'Shockwave',_ which Agent Daniels himself stated that it wasn't supposed to happen.
    The Bell Riots in DS9's "Past Tense" episodes might place the _DS9_ continuity in a separate one as well. And if so, there's also a chance that _TNG_ is separate from the Prime -- especially if ST:Picard's part of the TNG continuity. The Khan Project in _ST:Picard_ never happened before 2024 -- so yeah, that's another loose end.
    _ST:SNW_ cleverly inserted a deep cover Romulan agent in S02's "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" -- an attempt to retcon everything. Her confusion as to _why_ she had to wait a few extra decades undercover in order to find Khan Noonien Singh gives more credence to this unspoken theory that _might_ be multiple realities in which they're a part of -- which obviously is a consequence of trying to write for a franchise, with multiple shows spanning more than a millenium's worth of events (including real ones).
    tldr: Everything is canon -- unless we're excluding _ST: The Animated Series._ Which would *then* put the _Lower Decks_ universe in question with its Caitians, Kzinti, Aurelians, and Spock 2's skeleton. Which would *_then_* put LD's gateway in question...
    Janeway hated time travel. Imagine how irate she'd be if she was thrust into this multiversal mess. lol

    The star exploded in the prime timeline, which is what Spock was attempting to stop in the prime timeline before they were sent back in time, which altered the timeline creating an alternate timeline. Discovery isn't part of the alternate timeline created in the 2009 movie. Season 2 of Discovery takes place at the same time in universe when the 2009 Star Trek movie does.

    I mostly agree with people who say that it doesn't really matter whether New Trek is canon or not, what matters is that it's garbage.
    My main problem with New Trek is that it is anti-Trek. It mocks Old Trek's heroes and the values that they represent - - it corrupts their characters, and it sneers at their decency and strength.
    New Trek didn't need to do that. If they wanted to make Game of Thrones in Space, they could have done that without spitting on Old Trek. New Trek is a mean-spirited, empty, depressing attempt to kick older generations in the groin.

I enjoyed it far more than Amy of the other content over beginning with the film JJ was a part of. I think it is a shame we never got to see Captain Sulu get a full season at least on the Excelsior and the same for Riker on his own ship. What is so funny is that my ultra lib "friends" in the nerd community would constantly defend STD as if it were a religion. STD was angry, bitter, gritty, dumb and bitter in stark contrast to anything OG Trek. Now that the show is over it is as if it never existed. Nobody I know that was fans of the show can name the entire cast of STD nor do they have any favorite episodes they can name, and most never even watched the final season.
    Much like Star Wars and NU Doctor Who, they could erase and write off everything post 2015 and start fresh and only five people on Twitter and Tiktok would be "outraged."

      @MarkRyan-u3u Месяц назад

      Thank you for pointing this out. I never knew anybody who defended STD, so I was curious to know how anybody could defend a show that asked us to like the main characters who were mass murderers, mutineers, war-starters, and betrayers of friends. Evidently STD's "fans" were not truly invested in the show: it was just a momentary entertainment with no lasting value, a mindless flash-bang for the rave generation.
      Live long and prosper, and Season's Greetings.

      To be honest, I didn't know the entire cast of any of the series after only a couple of watchthroughs lmao And being able to name all the characters really is irrelevant. I can't name every single character to ever appear in any of the series, because I don't memorize them. I watch for the content of the episode/movie, not the cast list, etc. Discovery is no different. In time, the more I watch it again and again, the more the cast names will stick in my head. I mean, I've watched the entirety of CSI (original and spinoffs) more than once, and there's only a handful of cast names I can recall off the top of my head.

  • @NerdWorldEmpire
    @NerdWorldEmpire Месяц назад +8

    It isn't erased from Canon, this is coming from a joke scene in Lower Decks to troll people. Sorry to the people who want it to be erased but it's canon the lower decks scene doesn't decanonise (not a word but we will use it) the events of Discovery. For a start there's a crossover between the Lower Decks and the characters that spun off from Discovery and appear in that series. They just have a Klingon turn in to another version of a Klingon and it looked like a Discovery Klingon. I will admit I disliked the Klingons in Discovery but me not liking it doesn't make it not part of the universe. Second opinion the only real position is, is it the prime timeline (it is) if not then it's still canon just in the same way the Terran Empire is. That said if people don't like it, that's fine it happens to be one of my least favourite and least re-watchable Trek series and I'm a huge Trekkie! It's ok to not like something.

    • @The_Zilli
      @The_Zilli Месяц назад +2

      you're right, you not liking it doesnt make it not canon however what also makes it not canon despite what the "producers" and company like or think is when it doesn't jive at all with the original content whatsoever and it becomes a disjointed mess between the original and the "continuation". It would be akin to Disney Star Wars introducing a Super Death Star before a New Hope and then trying to claim it was cannon despite all actions in a New Hope illustrate that a device like the Death Star is/was something never before seen by the galaxy. STD nonse of "spore drives" comes before even the Trek Constitution class ship which is akin to that Super Death Star, nevermind the other oddities and cannon breaking crap that they tried to introduce. So much so that they had no choice but to shove this in an alternative "reality" despite all the fanfare when all started that this would be canon and in the same Universe as Kirk, Spock and McCoy when legally and storywise, it never could be.

      @@The_Zilli People think just because a studio owns a franchise that is the only requirement for something to belong in the same conceptual universe. In other words, because it is labeled Star Trek, that means it is Star Trek. As you pointed out betraying the principle of non-contradiction is sufficient to remove it from continuity. This is a basic concept in modal logic and related possible world theory. In narratives, the example most referred to is that the "King of France is both bald and has a full set of hair." France does not have a king, but it is logically acceptable as a counterfactual (a possible world), but the law of non-contrition is violated in the second part. it is the same as a married bachelor. For Star Trek, Klingons can't be both inherently covered with hair and free of hair at the same time. The showrunners realized this and then proceeded to try to attempt to repair that but the damage was done and their convoluted answer didn't' work. The thing is, the attitude many have is, "who cares? I'm entertained." In other words, they both want to justify the shows they like as part of Star Trek and at the same time, hand wave away arguments that clearly show that Nu-Trek is incoherent nonsense and has separated itself from actual Star Trek by is consistent violation of the three principles of logic, contradiction, excluded middle. and identity, and by the ridiculous amount of contrivances.

    • @The_Zilli
      @The_Zilli Месяц назад +1

      @@Rabbithole8 Long post but I did read it! You're right a lot of people are under the impression that Nu-Trek is just "retconning" the franchise when in reality it always was it's seperate thing because legally, it had to be.
      Not many are aware of the business/contract/legalities between CBS, Paramount, Viacom and Star Trek. When they split in 2006, they agreed to make Trek movies visually and tonally different from each other. STD comes out in 2017. Paramount and CBS merge again in 2019 however the rights of Trek are all messed up between ownership between CBS, Paramount and JJ/Kurtzman.
      SkyDance bought out CBS/Paramount, they want to streamline the property again and are currently figuring out how to divest itself from Kurtzman/JJ (last I've heard).
      So no matter what Lower Decks said or STD fans hope for, it ALWAYS was non-canon.

    Ultimately, the only canon that is indisputable is HEAD canon. If any old science fiction show like Sliders, Stargate Universe, or some other show that for some reason never really appealed to you decided to slap the name Star Trek in front of it ("Star Trek: Sliders", for example), we all know damn well that doesn't make it canonically Star Trek in our minds and hearts.
    I like how someone once compared Star Trek to a buffet; you're not supposed to like everything in it, you just pick out what you want and enjoy it.
    That being said... no, Star Trek: Discovery is NOT Star Trek IMHO. 🖖

Mine is the original series and the original series films Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home. TNG and the TNG film First Contact. And DS9 and Voyager. To me they embody the true spirit of Star Trek. Everything else that calls itself "Star Trek" either is a poor imitation or a cheap mockery.

      In fact, there are some that wouldn't consider TWOK "real" Star Trek because of the revenge plot, etc. In fact, I know someone who considers real Star Trek to be TOS, TMP, and the first 2 seasons of TNG... his view is that anything made after Gene was out of the picture isn't real Star Trek as Gene envisioned it.

    I think people are upset on both sides for no reason. Alternate reality stuff in Star Trek IS canon just in their own alternate reality. So these events occurred, just not in the main Prime Star Trek timeline. All the mirror universe stuff is canon just not in OUR Prime universe. So the people who hate discovery can be happy its not set in prime universe and people who liked it can still like it and it actually happened in THAT timeline which CAN later be explored so why is everyone mad, its fine.

  • @ruhafla8326
    @ruhafla8326 Месяц назад

    Why couldn't the Klingons shown in Discovery simply be another race on the Klingon home world? Earth had Neanderthal and Homo Sapiens living side by side. Both were human. Andoria had the Andorians and the Aenar. Couldn't the same have happened on Qo'noS? That's been my head canon for the variations of the same species we've seen in Star Trek. Tellarites anyone? How many different looks have they had?
    Also, Lower Decks just showed a Klingon with the Discovery look, but Klingons may have that look in multiple dimensions. Lower Decks just showed the different possibilities, it did not remove Discovery from Canon.

    The fiends that be tried to pass of their garbage trek creation as canon(complementary to the original/TNG) from the get go. Only later when they realized the fandom isn’t quite buying it they decided to say it’s an alternate reality. Like somehow if it’s an alternate reality it automatically becomes more palatable. In no way is the new stuff compatible with the original/TNG. Trek Ended with Star Trek Nemesis(unfortunately). Star Trek Continues is the last of decent trek.

TATV was a horrible episode but season 4 of Enterprise was one of the best seasons of Star Trek ever written, it respected what came before it and still had the spirit of Star Trek in it.

    SNW is not cannon but the versions we see in SNW does look different than the Disco versions- uniforms, sets, ship. So it may be a different universe or timeline again.

    • @leosklein7118
      @leosklein7118 Месяц назад

      Or there's this thing called the linear progression of time in relation to television production, so ships, sets, costumes and props are going to look different over time by default. Wrath of Khan looks and feels nothing like any given episode of TOS, are the movies in an alternate timeline too? Does any of Star Trek actually take place in the same universe? I bet not under your logic(?).

    • @ChaswellQuint
      @ChaswellQuint Месяц назад

      @@leosklein7118 Okay so when they do a time travel scene should they just make it look like its not from the past? That doesn't make any sense. The framing matters. I get what what you are saying and I think that SNW tries to strke a balance on the retro aesthetic . In the TOS movies there was normally an in-universe reason for the bridge to look a little different, or it was in a tolerance that we are willing to suspend disbelief for. These kinds of things matter when you have fans who are invested in the show, the story and the characters.
