I can totally relate to him being excited about his "moment of discovery". I had the same while working on my PhD in biotechnology while experimenting with a biopolymer. One day I did a regular procedure with some of the polymer I was working on when I observed something happening with it and I was ... WAIT A MOMENT!!! ... and had this realization. I pulled an all-nighter trying different things to confirm my assumptions and because I was so riled up I did not even remotely entertain the idea of sleeping, and also didn’t want to “break the magic”. In the end I was right and that night was basically the cornerstone of what ended up being my PhD-thesis. ...though I did not end up getting the Nobel-Prize for it ... yet
Actually no RIP Mr John Forbes Nash and his Wife Alicia Nash. The world is less without you than what it was.....we thank you for what you contributed to modern society.
This was a brilliant discovery and one many modern business owners would do well to take into account. Everyone nowadays is in a scramble to hire top tier talent and in the process, they overlook unknown talents that would not only work much cheaper, but would be grateful for the chance at success. The business world forgets that their job is to discover new resources, not just plunder the resources of their competitors. What's better? To hire one top tier talent or a dozen unknowns who have the potential to be top tier in the future?
I believe this is where lobbyists from certain industries came in the picture. Buy politicians and change the laws to reduce competition while getting around the monopoly laws.
He got shafted for the Oscar on this movie. He had won the Oscar of the previous year for a movie called gladiator, and certainly could have won one for this one.
You're right but over time and history, it doesn't matter. The English Patient won Best Picture. But now people talk more about Fargo and Jerry Magwire, two of the finalists that didn't win.
There’s a good book on this. I’ve seen even in textbooks in college “Nash equilibrium” or “Nash theory” it’s real. Videos like this makes studying math more inspiring vs boring.
The important lesson in this is: the most desired result or outcome of any situation is never the optimum. The best results come from an unwavering determination to sacrifice personal gain or satisfaction over the success and/or contentment of others.
But ... are those 'others' also sacrificing personal gain or satisfaction or are they riding the wave of one person's sacrifice of personal gain or satisfaction and enjoying their own success and/or contentment?
A young bull and an old bull were up on a hill. The young bull suggest to the old bull that the two of them run down the hill and each get themselves a heifer. The old bull say's "Let's walk down the hill and have all the heifers". Governing Dynamics!
For this to be a Nash equalibrium, all involved parties must WANT to keep their positions, because changing their positions would produce a worse result. So NONE of them can go for the blond BECAUSE the end result will be that NONE of them get laid. As Nash stated, you have to do whats best for yourself(and the group) with the end result being that everyone wins.
This is an excellent representation of the Nash equilibrium. Another great example is a stop light at a busy intersection. Everyone follows the light, everyone wins.
Even though there is an objectively better scenario: one of them gets the blond, and everyone else gets another girl. THAT'S why it's a Nash Equilibrium
The example he imagines in his head only shows the four guys competing because as the blonde was looking at him first, he believes he has won her over already, so the blonde is his to lose.
So,in business, ignore the largest govt tender, and pursue all the other less attractive deals? Walk away with something, instead of a small chance at the prize. Can't argue with that.👍
Basically what space x did. They just did their own thing, achieved a lot of things for a private aerospace corporation in such a public fashion, that NASA couldn't ignore it. Wow, she was something! Screw the maths! I'd gone for her! Hence why I an a dumb shit!! What makes it even worse? I probably wouldn't have pulled her anyway!!
I think it does and it doesn't. The beauty of this scene for me is that while John's friends are preoccupied with picking up girls, his love for mathematics supersedes everything else. It appears that numbers and patterns are more beautiful to him than pretty girls. I would even go as far as to say the opposite. Nash's passion for finding consistent truths is his true love and nothing else. This scene is the antithesis of mindless hollywood sexualisation. It's almost innocent and sweet.

An extraordinary movie about an extraordinary man. So very glad it was brought to film. John Nash deserved this. Thank you Crowe.
