Professors of all subjects have historically depended upon pens and ink to communicate their wisdom to others and to commemorate their individual contributions to the world. Surrendering one's pen is a symbol that the giver believes his own wisdom and contributions pale in comparison to the person receiving the pen. It is a symbolic homage, like laying down their swords before their intellectual superior.
Well, interestingly enough it seems this was a made up tradition for the benefit of the movie & actually doesn't exist! www.quora.com/What-is-the-history-behind-professors-giving-colleagues-pens-for-notable-lifetime-achievements-as-portrayed-in-A-Beautiful-Mind
considering that these two died together on a car accident really shows what a great and deep love was binding their souls. they should have waited some years before making the movie to see the end....i got really touched when i read on the news that not even death managed to separate them...
One of the best movies ever as what he was able to cope with and still achieve great things is remarkable, this movie opened up people's eyes to mental illnesses
the most heartbreaking thing i learn from this movie is at 1:10 he didn't want to be surrounded by people from the university in case if one of his attacks appears. All these years ignoring the fact that everyone loved him regardless of his mental problems.
and how honest and open it is with his situation. He is clear and openly his problem to someone who basically meet him 15 minutes ago who basically is the judge if he can or cannot receive his price according of his mental health, regardless of what is gonna judge.
This is probably Rusty's (Russel Crow's) best performance. There is some beauty in this challenging performance. We are blessed when actors perform at their best. No award need be sought. Professor John Nash is more important than this movie. I hope your children learn the majestic factors that he brought to humanity.
It's a verry emotional scene... It was one of the best from the movie (when they gave him the pens)! By the way, all the movie was great! It's one of the best that I've seen.
I love this movie and love Russelle Crowe for portraying John Nash. I know the real John Nash worked along side the movie makers to make sure they did. Was curious about there ages I know John was in his 90s. Then I learned how John and Alisha passed away. Was gutted they were travelling at a high speed in a car and neither were wearing seatbelts, both were flown through the windscreen and of course died instantly. Somebody so smart and a genius to not wear a seatbelt is so stupid!! RIP John and Alisha!!
The most brilliant of numbers and equations finally telling us that its in the mysterious equations of love...perhaps the life can be found...as i also believe through the experience of my life..and that of some others...that life is not in the form of p/q...a b'ful movie...b'ful act by Mr Crowe...and most importantly...the most b'ful message in the end....the beauty of love...
How does that tea end? Does he put his bag at the edge of the table and push all the pens into it? What does he do with the pens when he gets back to his office? Do they go in a frame? So many questions.

Interesting tidbit. Thanks for sharing :-)

Does it matter? It may be made up but it's a beautiful analogy nonetheless
Of course it matters. Shameful words coming from an educated individual. @drswapnil1234
In so many great films, what a wonderful medicine, music is!
"It is only in the mysterious equations of love that any real logic can be found."

Well, no one could predict the accident so it would have made no sense anyway waiting.
Yes it’s amazing how she stood by him for sooo many years and had faith in him to get better! Would love to know of their son

One of the few movies that will always bring tears to my eyes, this being one of the scenes that always tears me up a bit.
Ok, I just teared up just like the first time I saw this movie many years ago
I always cry my eyes off when they give him the pens... and his speech at the nobel prize thing, oh god...

Movies such as this are not documentaries that tell the 'truth'.They are entertainments that impart the spirit of the truth.
What a great speech!
Yes I agree with him . Both the solution and question are in the equation of love .
What an amazing movie...this brings back all the memories
You need balls to say "Yes... i am crazy..." and mean it.
only excellent actor can touch your soul like this
theres a fine line between genius and mental illness, John Nash is a genius, nicely done John......
This brought me to tears. I can SO relate.

Because it’s wrongly portraying the facts. Alicia divorced few years after their marriage and re married only after he got the nobel prize
and they died together in road accident ... true and divine love still exists

RIP Nash
I know the scene is touching, but notice how the first 3 pens are placed and that they suddenly change from the 4th one and on
Just fed information 😊
@Pakenija "You are all my reasons." I love this movie!
@JinrohDFLL in reality Nobel Laureates don't give acceptance speeches at the ceremony, so no, Nash did not really give this speech.
That is for cinematic purpose..
And it is heart-touching!!!

Thankfully, it is a good ending.
فيه مقاطع يتيوب لانجدها مترجمه ولاكن الصوره أبلغ وأوضح وفي الأخص العلوم الي تفيد البشريه وهم ضعاف افادو لأن هناك أقلام ورا العباقره
