@@bendegros hope that your injury is healing dude 🙏😊 I totally agree with you on the DC soles being too thin. I skated DC Spectres for ages, had countless pairs of them, because they were such a comfortable and supportive shoe and the soles were definitely a bit thicker. Hey ben, I'm from France and hear we have a new trucks brand called film, it really not expensive in France tho the quality is quite good. Could you review them ?
Ben , you should start a "try your setup" series where you go threw comments of our , the viewer setups and try the one that seems interesting to you and give your opinion . One thing I notice the most consistent about adidas (In my opinion) is the out sole grip. For me, that plays a massive part for when I choose a skate shoe. When I first started skating, I never really liked adidas, I thought that the cushion on them was horrendous and it wouldn't last for me at all. Little did I know, I'd be owning 5 pairs of adidas skate shoes including one (originally marketed as) basketball shoes the adidas top ten hi. In terms of the sneakers from the adidas skateboarding line, I'd say they are very consistent throughout the spectrum of sizing. I've skated Converse and one of the biggest reasons I'm skeptical of buying another pair is the sizing issues. I bought the Chuck taylor's (both non-skate and skateboarding specific versions) and the sizing was all sorts of wonky. That really discouraged me further from wanting to purchase of other models like, the CONS Weapon and the Break point pros. For adidas however, I've been a size nine the entire time and every shoe in the range has fit perfectly. One thing I notice that is in my terms the best part of adidas skateboarding is, the Upper (Canvas, suede, leather, ETC) would be the first thing to blow out that the traction. In other companies from what I've seen (With the exception of Etnies) that is not the case. Nike SB has a terrible track record in terms of durability and price point. Prices that sky rocket past the 80 USD range are (in some cases) unacceptable. couple that with the durable issues and it's a recipe for disaster.
Honestly I think new balance is making the best skate shoes right now. Comfortable, durable, break in easy, and look alright. I bought some Foy’s just to wear around and ended up liking them enough to skate in. Never thought I’d ever say this.
I've only recently found your channel, and honestly, I'm loving it. I use to skate a bit ago (2 years) and prior to that, I had skated for around 3 years so I have a little bit of experience skating. For some reason watching your 90-minute progression video actually inspired me to skate again. I've been skating for a little now since watching that video and I have most of my tricks back plus 2 more. Just wanted to say thanks and it actually worked well for me. Although everyone gains skill and has their own learning pace so don't take my word each to their own.
Ben, have you ever thought about opening your own skate shop (i mean who hasn't)? Given your knowledge of both skating and carpentry(hello mini-ramp?), plus your desire to share that knowledge, you could own a really rad and progressive shop. Some shops are nothing more than a retail store but then there are some that truly help skaters find what they are looking for. Honestly if the folks at the shops I went to growing up were half as helpful as you, I think I would have known SO MUCH more about the gear I was buying (and the gear I never even considered!). Plus I think there would a significantly larger skate scene in my town. Love what you are doing, keep it up! Ryan
All of the Lakai shoes I’ve had fit well because I have really wide feet but they all got soggy and were terrible after the second session. I felt that sliding feeling you described on every pair I’ve had. For some reason my Vans Old School Pros also felt like that.
I had Lakai Freemonts and I agree they were wide, which was great for my wide feet... Then they stretched a lot and were unskateable. I ran them for about 2 weeks and was over it. I'm running some Cambridges now and they're fantastic! My feet are wider so I don't get the shifting around that you talked about. Thanks for doing all these product reviews. I'm looking forward to the next one.
More of these, thank you! I thought I was a bit narrow footed, but the Nike Team shoe fits me so comfortably I even use them for workouts and long walks. No issues with the tightness of the toe area. I think they're even snugger than the Nyjahs.
I love Chukka lows. Only shoe I buy. I do agree with weird batch of shoes thing though. I remember I bought a pair from the Foot Locker in the Eaton Centre in Toronto. I actually didn't buy them to skate in. They were going to be just my casual kicks to wear and they fell apart in less then 2 months. Its really weird how they have this issue. The quality control is all over the place.
Thanks for the video! Wearing Vans at the moment (high tops) but the sole under the heel is so thin that my heel is now hurting for 2 days already, just because I landed hard on the heel. Found a pair of Airwalk 600s and will try them out tonight. They used to have good soles back in the day. Let's see...
I got a pair of higher cut HUFs from a mystery box years ago and they also caused/highlighted an achilles heel issue I still have tbh, though maybe I sort of had it prior I definitely didn't have it prominently until I wore them a lot. Your experience sounded crazily similar to my own, albeit my pair was from around 2013. It was really "hollow" on the heel & sort of recessed back almost. When you first mentioned rocking HUF I thought - yeah maybe I should dig up my pair & buy some insoles or something - then you nailed down all the reasons I never wore them.
Got the same problem as you. Bough Emerica the Romero Laced shoes and after one and a half hours of skating ( only beginner, learn ride and shuvit, not some serious stuff ) and they rubbed my achilles heel down to the meat on both legs. My legs just bleeding 4 days in a row. Can`t wear anything except flip flops for 2 weeks.
I had a pair of Fremont and couldn’t wear them either. I had to pull the laces super tight, which looked silly, and they still didn’t fit right. I really like the side profile, in fact that’s why I bought them, I’m just bummed they didn’t fit snug enough for me. My wife bought me a pair of Cambridge for Xmas this year that I’m looking forward to skating in.
Absolutely agreed with DC plaza and Nike SB team classic. DC plaza was my first pair of DC shoes and believe or not I landed my first kickflip with this pair of DC plaza. It has a good flick and board feel from my opinion, however it lasted me like 3-4 weeks maybe I rode with Mob grip at the moment. Nike SB classic team is good for some sessions. It has a good flick and board feel too. No problems with my foot because I get used the the shape of the shoes after wearing them a couple days and it broke in firmly for me. Yet it doesn’t last too long as Ben said. I blew out the toe cap at the first week but still wore them until it died. Maybe a month or less. I currently have a pair of Lakai Manchester, I wore them for a couple days and it starts blowing out on the flick area. It makes me disapointed for the new shoes that the material doesn’t last long enough until I break in a pair of new shoes, and until the second week I noticed the hole on the outer sole of my right foot. So disappointed for Lakai and I would never wear it again.
I had that issue with a pair of vans too, the Chima ones, really hurt my foot. It wore in eventually and ive bought other pairs and it has been fine. They were on sale on the website so maybe thats why but still pretty poor to have a manufacturing fault like that. I still love vans though.
i also had that same huf galaxy and i as well noticed that the shoe was super stiff compared to most but i think thats what i like about them compared to lakais or something because they were only of the only shoes i got that kept its shape and didnt stretch out and blow out all crazy
Been searching for my perfect deck and im kind of tempted to try a Blind skateboard! First off it feels very nostalgic, but they claim to do single press skateboards with mellow concave and steep kicks, which sounds really promising! I won't wait for your call before purchase, but it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on them! Thanks for the fantastic videos!
Hey Ben, would you try the FP Intercept shoe or any other shoe they sell? Would be interesting see your review on the impact absorption and other aspects.
Those lakai freemont absolutely shredded my heels too on the seam. Every session it would rub and bleed and I still have slight scars from it. Had to cut the seams out after a bit and stick plasters on it
I had the same achilles heel problem. Ended up walking and skating in high/midtops for two months but now it's pretty much back to normal and I can wear any shoe again. Mid/hightops are pretty sweaty when the wheater gets warmer tho
Please review the DC Legacy 98 slim. Lasts me forever and I skate a few hours every day. Only thing you have to do is superglue the stitching and they will NEVER go floppy
one thing about the team editions ( i had the blue ones ) they felt easy for heel tricks , but anything nollie flip to switch flip etc , just didnt work for me and what you said is true they are very snug on the toe area
Got a pair of team classics as well; I have a super super low arch in both my feet and for whatever reason the arch in the pair of mine is so high I can’t skate for longer than 15-20 minutes without getting crazy cramps
Nike team classic is one of the best vulc shoes I’ve ever skated but they lasted only 3-4 weeks and got holes everywhere. It is, as mentioned in the video tight but offers great board feel and also imo depends on everyone’s foot shape. Pros: Great board feel, Good flick tricks, Stylish with many different cool colorway. Cons: Not durable, Less support (rolled my ankle)
I loved the SB Team Classics. I skated 3 pairs in a row. The only probablem for me was the soles wore out faster than the sides for me. Now I'm trying some Vans, Chima's 2 and the Crockett's 2!
Sometimes I think it is the gauge of the rubber that makes a difference. Shoes I have skated in the winter tend to become more grippy when the temp literally jumps 100°f.
I got the exact same problem whit the Lakai that got that sole! I am glad to still be able to find old Lakai model whit the better fit. I was so bum when i got the one that feel to big!
You should try the converse one star pro. Guy Mariano wore those a bunch, and I love to skate in them. The've got a narrow-ish profile and a pinty toebox that gives an amazing flick. I personally prefer the mid tops, and if you liked the half cabs you'll probably like the mid tops too.
I own the Lakai Fremont XLKs. I love the look of them, I just dont think they are great for skating so they are just my chill shoes. They are very low cut like you said and feel like a slipper.
Haven't you tried custom insoles? I switched to FP king foam and forgot what it means to hurt feet, even when landing primo. Of course, I traded some board feel off, but I believe it really makes sense, especially when you're older skater like me.
Great video, Ben! I currently have FP Footwear Mark I DGS Elite for like a month or 2. Altho, I don't really jump big gaps so I dont know if that technology is working. Could you do a review and test them out? (even without the technology it's a pretty good and durable shoe)
Thank you Ben 🖖🏽 That explains why Mike Carroll is really prone to heel brusing. If you ever get the chance (and spare cash), review DC Lynx and Syntax. Also the Etnies Joslin 2.
The chukkas I only bought mine because they were on sale. the biggest problem I encountered with them was the toe part would shred alongside with vilcanized separation was a huge turn off.
Yes. What u said about Vans chukkas is exactly what I think of Vans in general. The quality control in their shoes is like wtf. I’ve stuck with Nike sb but ima prob go back to lakai. I’ll get thou.
Hey Ben, if you decide on another Lakai shoe in the future you should check out the Atlantic. It's the best Lakai in my opinion. It's a cupsole but super flexible.
I also got a pair of DC shoes recently after many years of not riding DC. I got the Tiago Lemos and when you first put them on, it’s feels like you’re walking on clouds, so comfortable but 5 minutes into every session I would get this horrific pain in the bottom of both my feet. Like a bad Charley horse in the sole of both feet. I had to run and take them off one time because it felt like my feet were on fire.
Ben I think your issue with the chukkas isn’t with the shoe(Althought the design of that model may have amplified the hinge point problem), but more so due to the fact that they are the pro’s. I’ve had that issue with the 2 pairs of era pro’s I had and I think they duracap just makes the panel covering that area too stiff. However, I think you would really like the slip on pros, I’ve had 4 pairs and really enjoyed them, and did not hurt the top of my feet. I think the elastic alleviates the bending at that area. Try ‘em out, or don’t! Love the videos, never stop making them! You’ve gotten me to pick up skating again at 25. Thanks!
I like the quick review of multiple shoes. The Manchester looks like a nice shoe. Looking forward to that review. I may need to try some Halfcabs after your thoughts in them. But right now I am very happy with my current shoe and already bought another pair of them. I have thought about doing something like this but as a heelfliper and not a kickfliper I feel my opinion on shoes would be invalid. However, I love skate shoes and it would be fun to talk about what I have learned about skate shoes in my 2 years of skating.
I'd love to see you skating in Slip ons. I skated a pair of them for a while and the major problem I faced was the fact that they're too low and when you skate without socks and you do an Ollie, the grip tape scrapes your ankle. I loved them though, super classy.
Yes the problem that you mentioned with Nike SB. Is even worse with Adidas Puig... It's a shame because I love the concept of the Puig. They just need to be a bit wider with more padding on the soul
the thing that happened for you on the vans also happened for me on the figgy dose's. Best shoe i've ever skated but it just hurt so bad for the first week. Only on the right foot tho.. 🤔
I feel like with any toe cap shoe you've gotta flick a few kickflips with no intention of landing them at first. Helps break in the rubber and gives you a second to recalibrate your flick.
Hey Ben a couple of things I really want to know would be the shoe friction theory on what shoes fit different to the same size. Also do you think to much rubber on the outsole can be to grippy ?
I thought HUF still made shoes? I may be wrong but they seem to have some listed on their UK website. It might be different in Canada and other regions but I'm not certain. Love your videos Ben! Always make me wanna go skate.

Dc Evan smith shoes are also really nice you should review those too
Great video, Ben!
The chukkas I only bought mine because they were on sale.
the biggest problem I encountered with them was the toe part would shred alongside with vilcanized separation was a huge turn off.
awesome video man, love the reviews
I didn’t have a problem with matchcourts especially with the toecap.
Yes. What u said about Vans chukkas is exactly what I think of Vans in general. The quality control in their shoes is like wtf. I’ve stuck with Nike sb but ima prob go back to lakai. I’ll get thou.
if you have DC/Quicksilver outlet stores near you.. they sell shoes for buy one get one 50% off (already cheap). I get all my beater DC's there.
great vid! if u love the half cabs u should definitely try the rowan pro. they are basically a better version of the half cabs
I'd like to see a review of clear weather shoes. I love the content!
Have you ever reviewed shapes boards? That’d be awesome to see.
Great review vid Ben. Do you mostly buy your shoes online or you buy/try them in stores first?
Thanks!
I’m sorry for asking you to do front side heel flips haha!
Hey Ben just wanted to say hello and hope all is good man!! Thanks for another rad video!! ☮️
Please review Vans Sk8 Hi Pro & Vans Era Pro. 😃
I would love to see a review on the Vans AVE Pro
Does anyone know what pants he was wearing for most of the clips? The grey ones? 5:16
Hey Ben! I love your reviews! Have you tried Straye? I would love to see your opinion of them! If you are ever near Seattle, let’s roll! 🔥🤘
I never said I wore halfcabs because I liked how they skate. I don't.
@@bendegros ohhh haha you just wear them around?
What do you do for work to still skate so much (and so well)?
I'd love to see you skating in Slip ons. I skated a pair of them for a while and the major problem I faced was the fact that they're too low and when you skate without socks and you do an Ollie, the grip tape scrapes your ankle. I loved them though, super classy.
what about the full review of the manchester xlk??
I would love to see you try something from Fallen now that they r back
Love the Plugs I met shirt
Yes the problem that you mentioned with Nike SB. Is even worse with Adidas Puig... It's a shame because I love the concept of the Puig. They just need to be a bit wider with more padding on the soul
hey ben! content suggestion can you review some ricta wheels! thanks!
Can you review air jordan 1 highs or mids for skateboarding? :D
Ben snag some vans rowans after those Manchesters! Best shoe out right now
you should do a ranking chart of every shoe youve skated !
the thing that happened for you on the vans also happened for me on the figgy dose's.
Can you review the etnies maranas? Imo the best skate shoe ever and super durable, I skate nothing else.
I only skate maranas anymore, surprised you havnt done those
I lied, I skated a pair of girl x lakais that I said I wouldnt (of course🤣) that were pretty good but not as durable
Hey Ben a couple of things I really want to know would be the shoe friction theory on what shoes fit different to the same size. Also do you think to much rubber on the outsole can be to grippy ?
i’ve had 3 pairs of DC infinite’s, and i really like them.
Have you tried the slip-ons?
What are good options for a wide foot?
I thought HUF still made shoes? I may be wrong but they seem to have some listed on their UK website. It might be different in Canada and other regions but I'm not certain.
Love your videos Ben! Always make me wanna go skate.
Could you review a quasi board
You are just too awesome! Thanks for the video!
Dvs Comanche, Era one, Globe Tilt... Padding is important!
