    I have the JVC in your video and yes it is a beast of a boom box. I hook it up to our TV and sat box in our bedroom to watch movies and it sounds awesome. I do have a strong urge to get a used one and attempt to upgrade amp and speakers in it, just to make it shake more pictures off the walls. Great video comparison.

      True, the model he has isn't the best though, he should get the B-90 LTD and see what he thinks.

    glad my review helped you in your decision.. that's mainly why I made this video.. these are on sale until July 6th for $199 on Amazon and other retailers.. so if your on the fence save $50 bucks right now and grab one.. I paid full price for both of mine and do not regret it at all..

    Hi Shawn,
    Thanks for the reviews and the good information.
    I just picked up the white version of the JVC RV-NB10W at my local Goodwill store for $24.99. It was only put out earlier today and I thought I'd better pounce on this sucker, because it was not going to last long. It's missing the carrying strap and remote control. A carrying strap I can come up with, but I really need to find the remote control to because it allows me to access the extra functions.
    Regards, Tom

    I’ve had the original JVC Kaboom box since it was new. Bought it at a Montgomery Ward store in the late 90s. Didn’t need it but I just heard the sound and had to buy it. Everything including the cassette deck still work flawlessly. I did find out that the old pet peeve of the subwoofer ends becoming sticky over time if you just let it alone, it eventually quits. Most people ruined the looks by bleaching them. Just had to wait it out.

    • @kyfeam
      @kyfeam  5 месяцев назад

      yea they get sticky.. i just use rubbing alcohol to get all the stickiness off then repaint them.. looks great after.. i made a red white and blue Kaboom.. looks sweet.. might make a vid on it at some point.. glad your still enjoying your beast!

    This was a really great review, thanks for taking the time. I have the JVC B-90 LTD and I love it, but sadly the cassette deck is knackered, might need new capstan and god knows what else. It likes to snap tapes, so I avoid putting any cassette tape into it these days. Has an AUX port so I tend to use external player. That Sharp M-10 looks sweet, I'm thinking of getting another sound box so might add that to the collection. Cheers!

  • @ELP0NK0
    @ELP0NK0 10 лет назад

    Shawn, first of all a BIG thank you for this video!
    I'm the proud owner of a JVC RV-B99 for 15 years, really awesome, but since some years ago, been using mainly the AUX feature for iPod, with the disadvantage that it will not charge and will use iPod's own aplifier for sound output.
    I was really in the look for a decent successor to such a legendary boom box, and happen to find the sharp on sale (200 usd) at a local store here in Mexico.
    After watching your video I went for it without a doubt. it has been 3 days and I'm really amazed at the good quality! I would just add bluetooth support to make it a complete upgrade to this day's needs.
    Now...for the JVC, this is just a matter of tastes, but my favorite all-around setup is: ACS: ON, SOUND: CLEAR, BASS 5 (or 6)
    Now, taking that the Sharp has no ACS nor independent BASS level, in your experience and opinion, what is the best EQ. setup for this box?
    Also, if you select any give EQ. Mode (say salsa) and then turn the ex-bass on, would this enhance the bass ON TOP of the EQ mode selected, or will it change completely the EQ. Mode and add the bass?
    I hope my question is clear, in other words:
    Is it the same selecting EQ. MODE: REGGAE + EX-BASS than selecting EQ. MODE: ROCK + EX-BASS? (will the EQ mode change all over?) or will it keep the originally selected EQ. Mode and on top of it enhance the bass?
    Well, now I'm putting my 15 year old RV-B99 for sale!
    Peace, and keep up the good videos! =)

    • @kyfeam
      @kyfeam  10 лет назад

      honestly I rarely ever turn the Xbass on as the Sharp has ample bass without it.. I use the vocal setting on the Sharp.. and at low volumes I kick in the Xbass.. or if I want to impress my friends or people I work with heh glad my video helped in your decision!

    I just got a Pioneer Steez Crew from Electronic Express for $29.99.
    I love it. I don't know why people act like it doesn't have good volume or bass.
    I have never heard these other two in person, but I will take everyone's word
    that they have more bass.

    • @kyfeam
      @kyfeam  8 лет назад +1

      +synapticflow the Pioneer has decent bass.. but not even close to the JVC or the Sharp.. but the Pioneer does have excellent mids and highs due to having tweeters.. honestly you got a great deal for $30 bucks.. i paid $280 back then and i considered that a great deal lol.. enjoy your Pioneer!

    • @synapticflow
      @synapticflow 8 лет назад

      What I really wish I had was the TDK units. Their lifespan on the market was way too short and I'm not about to pay Ebay prices for them now.
      As for the Sharp, I think they are out of their minds with that orange color scheme.
      The AIWA Exos-9 is what I like more than anything now. Do you think you'll get one of those?

    • @synapticflow
      @synapticflow 8 лет назад

      And will add that Pioneer was pretty darn arrogant with the initial price of the Steez and the lack of so many features like a radio, EQ settings, bluetooth; and the dependency on that stupid Mixtrax program.
      I guess they thought they could take the same bank breaking pricing they apply to their DJ products and apply it to this boombox as well.
      I doubt we will ever see a Mark II
      I think the Steez concept was a humbling lesson and the enthusiasts won't ever get to see a new model.

    • @vahiddjalily8604
      @vahiddjalily8604 8 лет назад

      in the video he says you have to use the remote but it looks like there are buttons on the top..???

    • @synapticflow
      @synapticflow 8 лет назад

      The Steez? There are many special functions that you will need the remote for. It's kind of a pain without it but you can use it without.
      It is also a pain to be tied down to Pioneer Mixtrack software. That sucks!!!
      So I sold the Steez for about $80 and got a Sanyo for about $80 new and the Sanyo is miles better! I did like the Steez look better but forget looks with this difference in quality.

I have a sirius SUBX1 box that sounds great. It's pretty unique because the woofer is on the bottom of the unit. I did purchase the sharp boombox because of your advice. I gonna try purchasing a iphone bluetooth device to plug into the dock and connect wireless. I can also go android to iphone adapter. Lastly, what do you like about the g boom? Thanks again!

    • @kyfeam
      @kyfeam  10 лет назад

      the reason I like the G-Boom is portability.. reliability.. sound.. and it last 6 hours on a charge.. 2 way speakers is a nice touch too.. not heavy like my other boomboxes.. and you can charge your phone with the built in USB.. it's a really awesome if not ugly Bluetooth speaker.. but looks aren't everything right! $99 bucks at Wal-Mart doesn't hurt either!

    • @rubenregal4849

      Shawn Turnbull Okay the Sharp (black) is arriving Thursday. I got the G-boom and like it. Oh and I picked up the Sony RDHGTK37IP (Pretty Sick!). Got it at bestbuy for $200 + $30 for two year warranty. It doesn't take batteries but it's portable to plug in. This Milwaukee came in today. It sounds really good but not much base. I like the fact that its waterproof, bluetooth, and it can run off those tool batteries that last pretty long. Do you have the Altec Lansing IMT810? Do you recommend it? Is it pretty loud?

      well good question.. at the moment my favorite is the G-Project G-Boom Bluetooth portable speaker.. my all time favorite has to be the.. hell I have many favorites.. I love them all the same! as far as the Sony you mention.. ehh.. and the Sharp beats out the TDK 3 speaker unit.. sound wise and feature wise.. though the TDK does look much sexier/beasty!

    • @kyfeam
      @kyfeam  10 лет назад

      i owned the DP-100 which is the same minus the LED meter in the front.. i have both service manuals and they are both using the same electronics.. the good thing about the DP series is they added a 3 band BASS/MID/TREBLE control allowing better control over the sound.. both thr Sharp and JVC are good buys either way.. depends on if you want IPOD/USB versus old school cassette/CD..

    Thank you Shawn ! I picked up the Sharp GX-M10 for $199 at Bestbuy and I am loving it . The bass is great and the overall volume is super loud,much louder than Dr.Dre Beatbox,Logitech UE,or any of the many portables I listen to at Bestbuy and it also had far better bass and clarity! The Sharp also sounds great when using battery's, it does not lose any of it's deep base or power ! The Sharp is huge"size wise" and the aux input is inferior "sound wise" ! But I still love it ! It is a best buy !

But I have no doubt you know what you're talkng about. I JUST ordered the sharp on eBay. I can't wait to get it to the factory and show it off. • @SilverLPs
      @SilverLPs 6 лет назад

      Maybe im too late, but the bass reduction in age is normal for the JVC Kabooms. But there is an easy solution which will make your JVCs bass even more powerful than a new bought one was. Go and buy some silicone from your local hardware store, and then unscrew your JVCs subwoofers and their plastic cover. Then you just fill the edges of the subwoofers placement position and the edges of the placements for the plastic covers with the silicone. Then you do the same with the 2 bass reflex tubes on the back of your jvcs. This makes sure that no air is able to escape of your JVC and it will return the pressure. Did that with my 2nd hand Kaboom and now its even more powerful, than the new ones were (back in the days).

    thanks for reviewing I had the JVC for 10 years it really rocked and was very loud with great bass. It is heavy as many will admit but it was worth it I used it every week for my magic shows in and out of the trunk of my car 3-4 times a week. Ive had it fixed a few times the cd player not reading then the tape deck broke off finally the volume would not increase I fixed that on it a month ago and then last week it failed again. I will not be fixing it again at this point. So anyway Ive done alot of research, shopping around and founnd that many people really like the Sharp GX-M10 over the JVC Kaboom and so after alot of reviews I bought it on ebay today.

    Shawn i am really torn what to get for work. I work in a loud workplace, where i punch 11g ss steel all day long, so i need something that really cranks. I am worried about too much bass though. I have a sony explode, i know their not much like 20 watts, but it has good bass for what it is. Sounds great at home, but i cant here it at work. I really like Sony products, i have a shelf system that has dual 6 inch woofers in each speaker and like 220 watts and it cranks, but not portable. So i think i might really like the sony gtk33ip, but its heavy like 30 to 40 lbs. I have been looking for a long time, but i would really like something with bluetooth too. I saw your collection, how is the Lasonic i931, i really like the looks and features of that system, but reviews arent the greatest. Is it pretty loud?

    The only thing that annoys me about the Sharp is the low input on the Aux-in. It's a 47kOhm input and not made for MP3 players for what I read on some sites. But the Mic or Guitar input should be working..

    yea adding the tweeters to the JVC was an awesome move.. now it sounds excellent.. highs are great.. as far as the Sharp is concerned I would still recommend it.. the highs are there just not in full force.. I could add tweeters to it if I really wanted to.. who knows maybe I will!

    Are you familiar with jobsite radio? The Milwaukee 2792-20 m18 looks interesting. You can charge 18volt on the unit, then run the radio off the battery, plus blue tooth. What is the loudest most powerful portable boombox that runs off batteries?

    • @kyfeam
      @kyfeam  10 лет назад

      the most powerful wattage wise is the Sharp GX-88Z.. it consumes and earth shattering 150 watts! and runs on 10 D cells.. see my videos on this boombox and you will understand why..

    I finally tested the AUX IN and find that the bass is somewhat refrained.. but if you use your EQ settings it does make up for it some what.. you still get excellent full bodied sound but you do lose the thumping bass that some have reported.. it was in no means unlistenable.. I have used the AUX IN previously but I also had it at a high volume when doing so.. so I didn't hear the slight loss in bass.. still an excellent boombox period.. does not change my feelings on it at all..

    How do these boomboxes stack up to desktop alternatives? I have a Logitech AudioStation which is packing up and I want a suitable replacement, something just as loud and just as powerful with the bass.

    Is there anything out there that compares to the old JVC RV-DP 100 or 200? I still have one of those old models, but unfortunatly I dropped it a while ago and now it is cracked.... Still works fine, but I don't want to risk ruining it, so I'm looking for an alternative to take on the road.

    i got the original one, from 1998 it says on the back. it said it was made in Elmwood Park NJ!!! Amazing unit, its dark green, i bought it back in the day for only 80 bucks brand new (i guess it was clearance because the newer models came out?) but apparantley it was the best one.
    my only problem is the 2 knobs on the top broke off. is there a way to replace these knobs without having to purchase a whole new unit. i dont need mp3 or the crappy ipod one. i use aux anyway. and i love the fact that it was made in the usa.

    HI Shawn..Ok the Altec came in today, so here are my thoughts..The Sharp is really amazing on the power it puts out and the bass is the main attraction. On CD the Stereo sounds awesome but it's absolutely true the AUX connection is POOR. I don't have an Ipod so I can't test that. But I purchased an NAXA usb wireless adapter so now it works like a bluetooth with my android phone. The Altec Lansing IMT810 is the best for overall sound. The bass isn't as nice as the sharp but it's really clear and those horn tweeters are awesome! I purchased a NAXA Ipod wireless adapter so now the Altec works like a bluetooth also. Wow that Altec is amazing..If you buy the Altec make sure you unplug the AC cord when your not using it. If you want a radio that is weather proof and last more than a week portable. Look into the Milwaukee 2792-20. But buy the extended battery. Just plug the radio into the wall, charge the battery with the radio and your good for longer than a week. The sound isn't a sharp or Altec (no bass) but really loud, compact, and cool looking. The G project is really cool (thanks Shawn) otherwise wouldn't have looked into it. My first box was the SUBX1 and I think audiovox makes it, thats a nice radio too. If your a person who likes to impress people and take your own music box (but have an electric outlet) Then look into the Sony G tank but again no batteries. I'm a person who read other people reviews before I make any purchases. So, now you have more information before you make your purchase. I'm no radio electrician but I can appreciate quality. I have a question Shawn..I've been looking into the JVC rv-nb90. Is this made in China? How's the quality? This boombox stuff gets addicting. LOL

    HI! My son in Puerto Rico forwarded this video to me, as I just bought JVC boombox imported from Japan. ( I have not checked yet, if it was made in China) Im very happy with that unit, and I have to buy the cable so I can connect my Ovation guitar to it, plus I want to order some good recheargeable D cells for it. Can you kindly recommend any, if you have any experience with those D cells? I really enjoyed your video presentation, and you did an awesome job! May I ask what type of camera you used? HD? Thanks again, and I suscribed to your channel....Please keep up the excellent work!

    You should check out the Behringer iNuke JR. I loved mine, it died last night at work. I think it's because I changed the woofer, to a lower impedance woofer. The bass was great with the original woofer, I should have kept it that way. I was looking at the Steez, but I love bass, and if it has none, I'm good. I'll probably get a Kicker ipod dock.

    Got the Sharp.. WOW!!
    Unbelievable bass for a portable radio. The sound stays perfect untill volume-20. After that it gets worse.. But at volume-20 it's LOUD!! I don't even know what max. volume is at.. 30?? With X-Bass on, you get perfect sound till volume-16. After that you get al lot of resonance in the radio. But that's also loud enough.
    Negative points: EQ-presets.
    Even in the presets with less bass, the bass is sometimes to loud.
    Only tested it with the iPhone and good quality music.

    I had the Sharp boombox, but I ended up returning it because the Altec Lansing 810 just "blew it out of the water" in terms of power and depth of sound. Absolutely unexpected trumping of the Sharp, although I prefer the Sharp cooler shape.

    I heard a JVC Kaboom for the first time in my life 2 days ago, and I immediately wanted one. After searching for one, it seems they are hard to find in my area, so after reading your review, I decided to take a chance, and purchase a Sharp GXBT9, which is the successor to the GX-M10. I really hope it delivers! Have you had a chance to listen to the GXBT9? If you have, can you let me know how it compares to the GX-M10??
    I actually prefer the new format of the GXBT9, as I, like you, don't use CD's much anymore, and don't have an ipod, so I'd gladly trade those for bluetooth connectivity.

      +Adair Cousins thought about buying the new bluetooth version of the GX-M10.. but my hobbies have changed to professional photography.. i still have some of the boomboxes but gave most to my friends.. the Sharp GX-M10 will always be one of my favorites.. but my main "boombox" for the last 2 years has been the G-Project G-Boom bluetooth speaker.. after changing out the pathetic 1500 MaH battery that is inside the G-Boom to a beefier one.. it has been fantastic.. and for $99 bucks.. a no brainer.. anyways i hope the GX-BT9 is as awesome as it's older brother! let me know..

      +Shawn Turnbull Nice, thanks for replying. I am passionate about photography and videography as well, wish I could afford a full size sensor camera, but am still using aps-c sensors in my sony and canon cameras. I'll check out the g-project speaker, and I can't wait to test out my GX-BT9 when it arrives.
      I've been primarily a component stereo fanatic since my teens, and own 3 Sony SA-WX700 subs which push some amazingly loud deep bass down to 20hz, so needless to say, I love the sound, feel, and impact good bass can deliver.

    No problems. Yeah it's great, Bass is Awesome. Works great with my iPad 2 also. My Roland TD11 Drum kit doesn't sound that good through it, but I wasn't expecting it to when it's only really meant for Guitar/Bass and Vocals through the Mic. I'm also Blind ( Which explains my RUclips name) And it's simple to use with Remote. So Thanks for the Review of this, it was this Video that made me Purchase the Sharp. Keep up the great work.

    the RV-NB20 is a great box.. all parts from the RV-B90/99/NB1/NB10 are interchangeable.. that's the cool part.. so find a beater Kaboom and replace the boards until you find the bad one.. be aware though the CD deck in yours reads MP3 files.. the B90/99 do not.. good luck!

    I have a question. If you will answer properly then I can decide if I will spend money to buy the TDK 3 speaker boombox. But if you will get angry again don't mind answering my question.
    You said you sold your 3 speaker, what are the things that you didn't like about it specially to its sound and connectivity?
    How will you compare the sound including the bass to the STZ-D10Z-R and GX-M10?

    • @kyfeam
      @kyfeam  10 лет назад

      i tell everything that is needed to make an informed decision in my video.. if you scroll down in the comments i mention my thoughts on the TDK 3 speaker unit.. one major flaw i failed to mention is the handle.. the TDK was quite heavy at 30-35 pounds.. and unless you had a very strong grip on the akward handle you stood a chance of dropping it.. 35 pounds not including the 12 D cells you needed to power it on the go.. sexy as hell? yes.. easy to lug around.. nope..

    That's one of the other problems with the Aux-IN. It doesn't go as loud as the iPod dock at high volumes. I read in a forum that it has a 47kOhm input, which is delivered through pre-amps? To low for mobile phones etc. I wanted to use the Sharp for my DJ setup (on-the-go), that's why I miss the power of the Aux-IN that the iPod dock does have. Do you happen to have a bluetooth receiver to test? The Guitar-IN has more power, but still not the same bass as the iPod dock..

Is that just because of the hardware quality or also the sound?
