  • In this video, Dr. Sanil Rege, Consultant Psychiatrist, takes you on an exhilarating journey through the shadowy realms of human desire and survival.
This episode of Psychiatry Simplified reveals the most bizarre addiction known to humankind, where the quest for the ultimate euphoria defies our very instinct for self-preservation.
Venture with us as we explore the neuroscience behind snake venom's intoxicating and lethal effects. Witness how individuals, termed Psychonauts, willingly risk their lives by allowing some of nature's deadliest snakes to bite them, all in pursuit of an extraordinary high.
Dr Rege discusses how neurotoxins and dendrotoxins from snakes like Cobras interact with human neurotransmitters, potentially leading to analgesia, altered perception, and a powerful addiction that can override the fear of death.
Discover the extreme lengths to which people will go, from provocative snake charmers in India to the clandestine black market of venom cocktails at rave parties. This gripping video sheds light on an addiction that is as compelling as it is dangerous, highlighting the paradoxical human nature of seeking pleasure on the edge of peril.
If you're captivated by the mysteries of the human mind and the lengths to which it will go for a fleeting moment of bliss, this video is a must-watch.

I am a journalist, researcher and technical writer. Before Long COVID was a thing, I was the victim of a virus -- perhaps flu or perhaps a mystery virus -- which caused incurable damage to my body. Others have had these experiences and in Europe these long term sequelae have been labelled ME/CFS. Here in the US I believe such disorders are still called mental illness. Anyway, perhaps 30% of people who survive flu, SARS-CoV2, etc. are permanently damaged.
INTERESTINGLY, recent research seems to be showing that viral proteins muck-up the acetylcholine receptors. Some relief has been achieved with low-dose nicotine transdermal patches. Nicotine has a stronger binding affinity than the biochemical trash left by the viruses.
I am a little off topic here, but many people are damaged by "common" illnesses. Indeed, I believe most people don't feel well. Here in the US, the public whines about the "mental health crisis" and the "opioid epidemic". We are supposed to shut up, go away and suffer quietly!
If snake venom cleans out places in the body that the body will not address, I get the point.
At the moment I am about 30 days into a diagnosed case of flu and my body is doing its best to imitate multiple sclerosis. My chance of full recovery is not good. I have thought, if I got bit by a poison snake, I'd see if my body would straighten up and try to fight for recovery. IN REALITY, in my part of the US, the poison snake is a small rattlesnake and it isn't where I am. So, I am not making threats of self harm. But I do believe my body needs to be shocked into surviving or giving up because it has no desire to "heal" itself.
I believe, in all addictions, medical science needs to learn how many people thus affected, are self medicating bodies that provide constant agony for the soul. Seriously! The old addage -- prior to modern medicine which can actually cure a few things -- that said the "good body" just wants to be guided into health, is, IMO a load of the rankest garbage. The body wants to fall apart, to tear itself apart if at all possible, and humans are programmed to live lives of desperate suffering. If snake venom knocks some sense into an ailing body, so be it.

Sorry to hear. We have a series of videos on Long Covid / POTS and CFS , please have a listen to those - treatment options have been covered which ofcourse need to be individualised .
Nicotine patches help because the final pathway is potentiation of dopaminergic systems. Snake venom poses risks because the neurotoxins compete against Muscarinic receptors leading to muscular paralysis and hence is dangerous. There are multiple options in the treatment of long COVID which address dopaminergic potentiation but the treatment is multipronged. Please have a listen to the videos.

Yes. Thank you! I keep studying as a journalist with a somewhat scientific background. Snake venom is fascinating. A friend was bittern by a fer de lance and the wound will never heal.... Back in the middle ages, bodies had to be brought to crisis to decide whether healing or death would occur and I am personally thinking along those lines but as I said I plan no self harm. I have written a number of pieces about the damages of viruses which, until now in the US, have been called mental illness. The good thing we will get from SARS-CoV2 is that the global spotlight of shame is now upon researchers and doctors who refused to listen to suffering people until now.
Since Long COVID has been a thing I have been writing impassioned pieces about what other viruses have been doing to people for decades. And now, suddenly, medical science is saying, 'Oh, by the way, flu and other viruses have been doing these things for a long time.' I feel justified in what I have written for so long and I am mystified that it has taken the global catastrophe of SARS-CoV2 to FORCE medical practitioners to recognize and address unbearable suffering!
I will check out your other videos. I see a great deal of knowledge coming from India, from whence I believe your channel originates.@@PsychiatrySimplified

“Spice melange is formed deep beneath the sands of Arrakis, where the fungal excretions of sandworm larva mixes with water to form a mass that eventually explodes to the surface due to the planet’s extreme heat. Collecting the melange is extremely difficult; the explosions are deadly, and the material hazardous. “

@PsychiatrySimplified I was comparing this because both drugs induced altered states of consciousness and they are produced by legless crawling creatures, one a snake and the other a fictional sandworm, both of whom are dangerous
