Er; His ENTIRE Career average is 3.7 Yards Per Carry. These are the most ordinary stats for a 'greatest of all time' back www.pro-football-reference.com/players/A/AlstMi00.htm "Ask his peers" Yeah he was hard to tackle, it sucked, but we did it. He could crush a LB but the other 2 plus the Safeties are gonna arrive in the time it took to truck that LB. Most of the runs were 1-3 yards. But the Highlights; oh man, those highlight runs are a joy.
Off field the man was a beast as well. Charities, community service, etc... Just a great example of a man who gave back to his community and gave 1000% all the time on the field. Wow!
Mike Alstott, Daryl Johnston, Lorenzo Neal should all be in the hall of fame. Fullback position is bizarrely underrated in NFL history. also, i agree with all the 'dunn was also badass' comments. that backfield was scary. and fun to use on madden.

At the practices that were open to the public you would see Mike during breaks. Always carrying his kids around with him. You could tell from a mile away he was a good dad.
He tackled defenders before they could tackle him, man those three words "Touchdown Tampa Bay" get me every time. That team should have won at least 3 SB.
At least Dunn being on the team during our Super Bowl run would have been cool. Even though I'm more sad Hardy Nickerson wasn't on our Super Bowl team.

Trouble is that from what everyone saw, Dungy wasn't going to take his team to the Superbowl. Don't great me wrong, as a Bucs fan, Tony Dungy is highly respected by me and he is a legendary coach. However, Indianapolis was a better situation for him, which is why he won a SB with them. I'll never forget that one time that Peyton sent the punt team back off of the field to go for it on 4th down. It was a microcosm of the interplay of Dungy and Manning. Dungy was going to play it conservative and Peyton overruled him and got the first down. Dungy needed a guy like Peyton to get to the next level. But, that tampa defense was legendary though

Defense only gave up 12 points a game (1st in the NFL) and the Defense scored 9 TDs that year. So who REALLY won the SB that season?
He is definitely a Hall of Famer someday in my opinion. The only knock they had on him was the fact that he wasn't a good run blocker based on how the position "fullback" is suppose to be played. But I say the hell with all that, this guy was a playmaker, a highlight reel in his own right. You know you somebody when you are one of Chris Berman's favorite players. Chris Berman was the one that gave him the "A-Train" name and made those sounds of him breaking tackles. 11 years in the game. 6 Pro Bowls. Voted All-Pro 3x and won a Super Bowl. All this and played for one team. HALL OF FAMER no doubt about it.
A two back system doesn't require the fullback to be a blocker as first priority. The Packers have a clone of Alstott in Aaron Ripkowski, but rarely use him to his potential.
Whoa whoa whoa, I'm a packers fans and yeah ripkowski can run like a tank at times but he is not even close to being on the same level as alstott, let alone a clone. And yeah that's true about fullback's not having to be primary blockers in two back sets but it definitely helps. Look at how the packers used John Kuhn.

I’ve been a bucs fans my entire life & was lucky to be a 4th row season ticket holder for some years….on the night of John Lynch’s induction into the ring of honor, we got picked to meet Mike Alstott at the NFL network pavilion. Mike was legitimately my football hero in high school and I wasn’t afraid to tell him about it when we met. He was so polite and humbled by my statement that he gave me a hug….I’ll never forget it

I watched this guy from the time he began his career to his retirement. His talent amazed me. I had always wished my team would eventually sign him. He had heart, agility and power. This guy got it done.
Love the A-Train. My Dad gave me that nickname as during my childhood it took me a while to truly understand the power behind that nickname. Mike Alstott is and will forever be my favorite and my Dad’s favorite player. Go Bucs
You need to understand something. This guy made a career running in the A gap. The most blitzed gap in all of football. I was at so many of these games. He was the toughest runner I have ever seen. I have been watching football for 40 years. He was simply one of a kind. A great citizen, a great player. There are no controversies regarding Mike. A true character player and skill player. I Love Gruden and all; but as an Offensive Guy he's overrated he never could get a QB to read the field in 2.3 seconds as drawn up in his massive West Coast Offense Playbooks. Never could make the Tampa Offense better then 15th place. He was brilliant in the 90's in Greenbay and made the Raiders awesome with #1 Offenses and made Cast off Rich Gannon an MVP.
NFL Offenses are ALL Similar in that they All have plays that beat every coverage, man, 2 safeties or 1 safety middle of the field; on each side of the play. A Manning or Brees or Brady can diagnose and throw to the open guy; there's ALWAYS an open guy by design the guy that's one on one with his man defender trailing headed for open grass without a safety or LB waiting there....But SO Few Guys can learn to do that; AND it takes 3 years! I remember hating Eli Manning; but Rivers WAS a better student 2005-06-07 by far. It took Eli Until December 30th 2007 to FINALLY figure out how to find the open guy; at the best possible moment; Scoring 35 Points against the 15-0 Patriots in Week 17. Then I believed. He passed it all over the yard that Epic Postseason.
Walter White Bettis was a RUNNING BACK and Alstott was FULLBACK! All the other stuff means nothing. Gruden did not properly use Alstott during his tenure under the Bucs, if so Alstott would have had more Pro Bowls and even better numbers than he finished his career with.
Yeah exactly; Alstott was used more as a lead blocker for Pittman and Warrick Dunn then handling the ball himself. Jerome Bettis refused to be used this way by the Rams. He was much faster; Bettis was a complete RB...Alstott didn't gain yards per carry because of his slow speed; like most Fullbacks. The 'White Bettis' is craziness; taking highlight reel as if it's the usual; when its not...Because Bettis had his own Fullback to lead for him.
Miss those days hearing Gene say "Mike alstott up the gut!" Lol. Met Mike as a kid, went to his football camp, one of the coolest experiences of my childhood, he greeted and spoke to all the kids individually, ran drills with us, it was cool
He is a humble , quite blue collar lunch pail type guy who grinded you out on every play. Nothing but respect for the way he played. Its sad the FB position is dying out in the modern NFL.
If they ever wanted to put a fullback into the profootball Hall of fame Mike alstott should be the first. He is the most loved buccaneer we ever had. When he was drafted, he set two goals. Make the Buccaneers better and win a Super Bowl. And he did just that.
Actually there's ALOT OF Fullbacks in the hall. Back when Splitback was the main formation... Franco Harris; Larry Czonka, Jim Brown just off the top of my head are FBs in the Hall. Halfbacks would lead block for FBs back then; and vice versa. The I-Formation wasn't the main formation. Check any 80's game out; they still used the Split Back, equal distance behind QB. Either could be the 'running back' on any given play. Would a Lead Blocking FB ever get in the hall? Remember Vonta Leech? That was Hall of Fame caliber lead blocking. The Hall voters don't watch enough film; because I can't even think of a Single Offensive Guard in the hall!
Plenty of FBs in the hall. Franco Harris, Larry Czonka, Jim Brown. Just not the 1980's-2000's Blocking FBs who are now going undrafted as most teams don't use one. Just like the 3rd LB or the 3rd lineman in the 4-2 and 2-4 Base alignments. It's simple Math; the Fullback blocks one guy...the guy who is only on the field because the FB is in the game. Replace FB with a slot WR and it takes one defender out of the box; possibly 2; if he's dangerous like Edelman and needs double coverage. A FB today REALLY needs to be a passing threat; the way Kyle Shanahan used one in Atlanta in 2016 and paid too much for Kyle Juszcyk for the upcoming 2017 Niners.
Late 80s & 90s NFL was a great era!! Barry, Deion, Alstott, Aikman, Elway, Simms, Allen, Montana, Young, Marino, Sapp, Brooks, Payton, McMahon, Seau and the list of great names goes on and on...I thank God I grew up seeing these guys play

im a pats fan but mike allstott easily my favorite non pats player loved him in college and followed his whole career bought his jersey in 1997 and still wear it. wore it proudly for that superbowl in 2003. wish they made players like mike still i miss the fullback position pure power football up the gut!!!!
One of the most respected players in the game bc he put his nose to the grind, he is good hearted and gives his all. Those are unbeatable qualities in many peoples opinions.
I am 50 years old and a Tampa Bay native. I have witnessed some of the greatest backs in the history of the NFL. I watched every single game Alstott played in. He is still my favorite I have ever seen next to Barry Sanders. He was old school smash mouth football. There will never be another like him in short yardage situations. The epitome of Buc ball! Why is he not in HOF?!

Not a Bucs fan but it was great to have seen this team rise from the depths and do well. Great defense and exciting players like Alstott and Dunn on offence. Plus those new unis were fire.
Mike Alstott was the definition of a powerful running back. He could pound it on the opposition and could sometimes apply that speed. He could block and catch. He was tough to contain. He was a fun back to watch.
+Mike P Can't argue with that. I know for a fact that he is the best running back the Bucs have ever had. As a "St. Louis" Rams fan, and now full blown Packers fan, I would say Marshall Faulk is a better runner, but you could put Alstott up there with the likes of a Barry Sanders and a Emmitt Smith. All of these backs were unique in their own way.
Man I miss watching him run. He made watching the Bucs fun again. Loved listening to Gene on the radio “Alstott up the gut!” That whole era was great. Alstott, Sapp, Lynch, Brooks. Just to name a few made that team awesome to watch. Hopefully we can get it together again with the young team we have now!

I used to admire the way Alstott would run. His speed was faster than what defenses would account for. So when that 250 lbs would get into the second level, he was a unanimous mismatch. Any LB or DB was not bringing this guy down! Your only hope was get him behind the LOS or before he got his speed going. Mike was a straight up hybrid. A true FB that can block, and pass catch but amazingly has the speed and vision of a tailback! Smh....If I'm showing someone what I mean by running behind your pads, Mike is the film I'm showing. This is coming from a Texas Native Cowboy and Longhorm fan.

I watch this a few times a year. Mike Alstott is my favorite player of all time, and I'm a diehard Saints fan. I think he is the best power runner of all time. I would always create an Alstott clone in NCAA Football for my college career mode.
I'm 24 so Alstott was a bit before my time in terms of recognizing his game- but I've seen so many comments about how underrated he is. Watching this and some other highlight videos, its insane that he isn't in the hall of fame. One of the most physical half/full backs of all time. Seemed like he gave everything on every play. I can see some parallels between his style and Marshawn Lynch. Power, balance, grit, speed. He had it all. You dont need great BC vision if you can just run over people- but he still had elusiveness at that size. Insane talent
Whenever people watched Alstott, they watched the G.O.A.T. when it comes to NFL Fullbacks. I seen other teams try to get a fullback to emulate him. But the other teams failed to do that. Mike is a guy who needs to be in Canton for sure.

Walter White Bettis was a RUNNING BACK and Alstott was FULLBACK! All the other stuff means nothing. Gruden did not properly use Alstott during his tenure under the Bucs, if so Alstott would have had more Pro Bowls and even better numbers than he finished his career with.
Yeah exactly; Alstott was used more as a lead blocker for Pittman and Warrick Dunn then handling the ball himself. Jerome Bettis refused to be used this way by the Rams. He was much faster; Bettis was a complete RB...Alstott didn't gain yards per carry because of his slow speed; like most Fullbacks. The 'White Bettis' is craziness; taking highlight reel as if it's the usual; when its not...Because Bettis had his own Fullback to lead for him.
Miss those days hearing Gene say "Mike alstott up the gut!" Lol. Met Mike as a kid, went to his football camp, one of the coolest experiences of my childhood, he greeted and spoke to all the kids individually, ran drills with us, it was cool

If they ever wanted to put a fullback into the profootball Hall of fame Mike alstott should be the first. He is the most loved buccaneer we ever had. When he was drafted, he set two goals. Make the Buccaneers better and win a Super Bowl. And he did just that.

Actually there's ALOT OF Fullbacks in the hall. Back when Splitback was the main formation... Franco Harris; Larry Czonka, Jim Brown just off the top of my head are FBs in the Hall. Halfbacks would lead block for FBs back then; and vice versa.
The I-Formation wasn't the main formation. Check any 80's game out; they still used the Split Back, equal distance behind QB. Either could be the 'running back' on any given play.
Would a Lead Blocking FB ever get in the hall? Remember Vonta Leech? That was Hall of Fame caliber lead blocking. The Hall voters don't watch enough film; because I can't even think of a Single Offensive Guard in the hall!

Plenty of FBs in the hall. Franco Harris, Larry Czonka, Jim Brown. Just not the 1980's-2000's Blocking FBs who are now going undrafted as most teams don't use one. Just like the 3rd LB or the 3rd lineman in the 4-2 and 2-4 Base alignments. It's simple Math; the Fullback blocks one guy...the guy who is only on the field because the FB is in the game. Replace FB with a slot WR and it takes one defender out of the box; possibly 2; if he's dangerous like Edelman and needs double coverage.
A FB today REALLY needs to be a passing threat; the way Kyle Shanahan used one in Atlanta in 2016 and paid too much for Kyle Juszcyk for the upcoming 2017 Niners.
The Bucks had a quotaback and they never won the Superbowl.

Late 80s & 90s NFL was a great era!! Barry, Deion, Alstott, Aikman, Elway, Simms, Allen, Montana, Young, Marino, Sapp, Brooks, Payton, McMahon, Seau and the list of great names goes on and on...I thank God I grew up seeing these guys play

im a pats fan but mike allstott easily my favorite non pats player loved him in college and followed his whole career bought his jersey in 1997 and still wear it. wore it proudly for that superbowl in 2003. wish they made players like mike still i miss the fullback position pure power football up the gut!!!!

I am 50 years old and a Tampa Bay native. I have witnessed some of the greatest backs in the history of the NFL. I watched every single game Alstott played in. He is still my favorite I have ever seen next to Barry Sanders. He was old school smash mouth football. There will never be another like him in short yardage situations. The epitome of Buc ball! Why is he not in HOF?!

I have been lucky enough to spend some time with him post retirement at some charity events. The guy is a class act and a good man.
Not a Bucs fan but it was great to have seen this team rise from the depths and do well. Great defense and exciting players like Alstott and Dunn on offence. Plus those new unis were fire.

Mike Alstott was the definition of a powerful running back. He could pound it on the opposition and could sometimes apply that speed. He could block and catch. He was tough to contain. He was a fun back to watch.

As a "St. Louis" Rams fan, and now full blown Packers fan, I would say Marshall Faulk is a better runner, but you could put Alstott up there with the likes of a Barry Sanders and a Emmitt Smith. All of these backs were unique in their own way.

Man I miss watching him run. He made watching the Bucs fun again. Loved listening to Gene on the radio “Alstott up the gut!” That whole era was great. Alstott, Sapp, Lynch, Brooks. Just to name a few made that team awesome to watch. Hopefully we can get it together again with the young team we have now!

I used to admire the way Alstott would run. His speed was faster than what defenses would account for. So when that 250 lbs would get into the second level, he was a unanimous mismatch. Any LB or DB was not bringing this guy down! Your only hope was get him behind the LOS or before he got his speed going. Mike was a straight up hybrid. A true FB that can block, and pass catch but amazingly has the speed and vision of a tailback! Smh....If I'm showing someone what I mean by running behind your pads, Mike is the film I'm showing. This is coming from a Texas Native Cowboy and Longhorm fan.

I watch this a few times a year. Mike Alstott is my favorite player of all time, and I'm a diehard Saints fan. I think he is the best power runner of all time. I would always create an Alstott clone in NCAA Football for my college career mode.

I'm 24 so Alstott was a bit before my time in terms of recognizing his game- but I've seen so many comments about how underrated he is. Watching this and some other highlight videos, its insane that he isn't in the hall of fame. One of the most physical half/full backs of all time. Seemed like he gave everything on every play. I can see some parallels between his style and Marshawn Lynch. Power, balance, grit, speed. He had it all. You dont need great BC vision if you can just run over people- but he still had elusiveness at that size. Insane talent
