Wow! You are talking directly to ME! We are "helping" raise granddaughters 2 and 4 yrs. Old. No easy fete! I am bound and determined to keep quilting as time allows. I am keeping my projects as simple as possible. I know they are my priority, meaning granddaughters. I am trying hard to enjoy the quilting time I do have, and not be too hard on myself. Thank you for gentle reminder. Love your videos!
When I was that age, my mother made sewing cards from coloring book pictures, cardboard, and old boot shoelaces for me to work on while she was sewing. She told me that it was the first step to learning how to make clothes. I worked hard on those! I graduated to worsted weight yarn, then crochet cotton, then thinner and thinner thread over a few years. My first actual sewing was hemming skirts. It’s still the most relaxing, LOL.
Thanks, Amy! It took me several years to stop comparing my quilts to the ones made by others in my quilt group who have long-arm machines, whereas I "only" straight-line quilt on my domestic machine. What finally turned the corner for me was realizing that I was trying to equate apples and oranges - that and realizing that I actually love my "apple" method & results. Plus I do trust the thankful and gracious comments made by people gifted with my quilts, who resoundingly find them amazing and beautiful.
I mostly straight line and feel unapologetic. I am particular about my piecing but not OCD. But my quilts finish nicely and are well received. I have limited time so developing my Fmq skills has not been a priority. Frankly I don’t find quilting to be that enjoyable. Love everything else.
Beautifully done. My EQ8 has saved me from design and fabric errors. I have a strong I know it when I see it sense….and this program helps make avoid scraping off the bottom of my shoe. According I have had no projects that warranted a WTF was I thinking rant. I’m a big believer in embracing the current effort with one’s current skills and experience. I’m not embarrassed by any quilt that I have made….of course many of those are baby quilts and they do not complain. I love seeing my quilts in the wild in pictures with the recipient. I do not aspire to be anything but a recreational quilter. But I aspire to master the techniques for construction…..and do straight line quilting because I’m not all that into FMQ. (Feels treasonous to say!)
Thank you! I needed to hear this video. I come home so tired from a full time caregiver job for a 96 year old Dementia lady and I don’t have the energy or time to sew like I was. When I sew, I feel like it’s not very good or fancy like some I see online but it’s all I have time for at the moment.
Oh that is so hard. We have to take care of our caregivers and giving YOURSELF grace to be where you are is a big part of that. I’m so glad you are still making time for sewing and the creative outlet and rest that it brings.
I have been known to take a project apart, re-cut the pieces, and use the pieces in other quilt projects. Yes. I have fallen out of love with a quilt pattern, before I finished the quilt. I usually don't fall in love with that pattern ever again.
I do that, too. It's still lovely and useful fabric, I just don't care for what I tried to make. Perfect work to do while watching TV and at the end there is more to add to the scrap bins!
I always get it done and if someone doesn’t like it too bad , even if I don’t like it I’ll finish it.quilts are mostly one of a kind .uniqueness is part of the quilt …. Love you words of encouragement thank you ….
I totally agree! The one thing that I'm going to encourage my quilt group to do is to stop criticizing their own work and take a compliment! We all work very hard on our quilts and even if it's an easy pattern it's still took a lot of time and effort. One of the ways that our group helps one another is when we clean out our sewing drawer, shelf, or even room, and we have good stuff that needs to leave, our guild once a month has a free table. You can come and leave treasures that others will want. Helps you and help someone else! Thank you so much Amy! I look forward to your channel each time you post!
Hi Amy! You are so wonderful and encouraging! There should be a note to the world that says, "If Amy's speaking, LISTEN!!!" Hey...I just wrote that note!!! Hugs from Canada.
Thank you for sharing this video hits home for me especially # 1 I criticized my own work in my quilts I judge my work I am hard on myself and I shouldn't because I have entered my quilts in different events and won ribbons but I still don't think I am good enough but I will say girl your quilt is beautiful for now on.
I just re purposed blocks that were part of a sew along, I bailed halfway through because the colours weren't me. They have sat in my wips for about 5 years. Just made a moder baby quilt with them to gift to a friend. Guess what,I feel lighter and am starting the pivot and rethink method on all my wips. Yourcomments are already timely reminder that I am in charge of my quilting and I can do anything I want with my wips. I have finally get go of the wips guilt of not finishing as the pattern as written. Thankyou.
I always found it difficult to finish any quilt that my husband tried to input his opinions into backing choices or color choices. We had very different esthetics. I miss him terribly, but not his quilting voice.
I just gave away the first quilt I made years ago. I finally admitted I was never going to get it quilted so passed it on to someone who might. She loved it so it went to a good home. Thank you for your reality checks.
You are so right Amy, these apply to so many parts of life. Comparing my fashion choices to someone that lives fashion, the car i drive versus the person who gets a new car every year etc. If we all excelled at the same thing, how boring would the world be. We are different & that is what makes each of us so special. My choices are my choices and i am so happy you reminded me to enjoy what I have - thanks Amy!
Awesome advice from an equally Awesome person. So much relates to me. It will take practice to follow this advice but it all makes sense and makes for a less stressful quilting. Thanks so much
Oh my! I needed this pep talk today. I have a quilt on my domestic machine ready to go for several days. Keep having thoughts"what if I mess up my stitching again?" "What if my stitches become to tight again?" "What if ....again?" Now I can say so what! It's my quilting and I did it my way again! Thank you for pep talk!
You always manage to hit the nail right on the head with the things you say. I’m the worst for pointing out mistakes in my work. I am trying to stop doing it but it’s not easy. It’s the same with persevering with something I’m not enjoying. It’s like admitting defeat if I give up and don’t finish it, I’m the same with reading books. I once started a book 4 or 5 times determined to finish it. NOT anymore! If a hobby project doesn’t bring me joy then I stop doing it. I’ve given myself permission to put it aside, give it away, whatever. I’m the same with fabrics I no longer like. I have friends who sew and the local green marketplace which is a second hand or recycling type market with all proceeds going to local charities will happily take it.
Aww. Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re practicing gentleness with yourself. I love that you are letting go of what’s not serving you. Way to go. You’re awesome!
Oh yes. Sometimes comments are useful, but in the end this how I made it. I'm stubborn. I will take quilt judges comments somewhat seriously. Or my favorite RUclips people, Amy! But I figure that I surpassed that "D" as a freshman in high school, my first art class. They didn't have fiber arts! What was I getting at? I can critique my self silly, however, the more I change something on a quilt, the more frustrated I become. I put it down, come back later with an even better idea. You are wonderful! Thank you, Amy! Marion
I just told the lady at the fairgrounds I didn’t enter because I wasn’t good enough. Busted! 😄. (I also don’t tend to finish half of what I start). Time to turn that around.
This came very timely. I’ve been looking through a bunch of UFOs (really too many) and trying to decide why they are still not done. I’m finding some came as kits and I really don’t like the fabric and some were started so a group of us were doing the same quilt. I’m going through now and donated quite a few to my local guild. If I’m not going to finish them then I can use the space for something else I enjoy.
OMG Thanks for the reminders. I have a 2020 BOX quilt that I didn't like from opening, but at the time I did all the pressing all the organizing all the processes I do before cutting and piecing. After days of fidgeting, I finally put it back into the box. A year passed and I pulled it out to see if I thought better. Nope, but I messed with the pattern, I made some notes, I spent more time before putting it away yet again. Today, I will separate that box from its fabrics, my stash will be richer and I will move on. In Feb 2024 I gave away 60+ yards of older no longer loved fabrics to a charity quilt group, They used it and I no longer fretted about it sitting taking up space. YEA! Clutter of fabric is bad on our creative brains, as we might keep trying to use those fabrics because we think of the money. You are right, it's gone and cannot be retrieved, Thanks again. Time to move on
I definitely need to stop comparing myself to others. I'm 24 and going through a "what am I doing with my life" phase. I don't know how to drive, still live at home, and trying to figure out if it's worth it to keep going with my education and if I do, what do I go into so I can support myself.
Aww Sarah you are not alone. My daughter turns 24 next week. Just started college last month, can but doesn’t drive, lives at home. Sweetie it’s all ok and the biggest lie we tell our young people is that you need to know what you want to do forever RIGHT NOW - you don’t. You will redirect and reinvent yourself many times as you go and it’s an adventure everyday. Take your time and make the best decisions you can with the information you have- that’s all any of us can do! Blaze you own trail!
@@amydement. I I love how much you reply to everyone. I did go to a community college to figure out what I wanted to do for a lot less money and people always say that it’s such a good idea. My dad got a degree to teach music but wasn’t until he was student teaching that he figured out he didn’t like it. He was a machinist and now tile setter
Thank you and You see- you already knew that! Community college is a great idea and one I wish more people embraced. It’s a fantastic testing ground and maybe you find a spark of interest and maybe you find out that’s not your path. Either way- good options. Try everything and remember to fail forward - everything that doesn’t fit teaches you something of yourself.
I have donated at least one quilt top that I finished but really hated. I didn't even like the fabrics enough to cut and reuse. No idea why I tried an EPP with shapes that large. Prob was in my "use that all up right away, not stash!" phase. anyhow, I hope someone else likes it, and I am so glad it is out of my D house so I don't see it any more!

@debbyshadeck3820 I’ve been in the same boat as you since 2016. I try to remember to do what I can, as I can.
Thank you so much. You are doing amazing things working with granddaughters. Try and be as gentle with yourself as you are with them. 😊
♥️♥️♥️

Thank you!
The quilts I have struggled with are those I follow someone else’s input!
Trust yourself!
It’s easier to bug you when I’m overthinking color/fabric choices though!!! 😜
