I recently decided to retire my 2015 13" MBP 3.1 GHz i7, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I went with a used 14" M2 Max 12/38, 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Perhaps I could have shopped around for a better deal or spec for my needs/wants, but I paid just under $2K which includes two more years of AppleCare+. Whatever the case, processing photos had become painfully slow on the old machine. This new-to-me laptop is ridiculously fast in comparison, so I am very happy I finally upgraded.

Thank you very much for this informative video, please help on this below: I have 1 question, there is 2 options for me to get MBP 16 M1 max 64 ram 2T SSD or MBP 16 M2 Max 32 RAM 1T SSD (at the same price for both). I’m a beginner in video editing but I plan to get one for a long term like 3 years at least, pleas advise!!
I absolutely love how you put this comparison together in such a real world practical view. As a photographer this is so helpful. One test that I selfishly would love to see is how upgrading from 30 to 38 GPU would effect the new Lightroom Denoise AI processing which I believe uses 100% GPU. When this LR feature came out it took my 2018 Mac Mini over 10 minutes to process one 48mp picture from my Nikon Z7! I just got my new Mac Studio today with the base 30 GPU configuration and the same 48mp image took 20 seconds to process which is a big improvement. What concerns me though is that while Denoise was running on my new Mac Studio my GPU was at 98% which makes me second guess my decision not to go with the $200 upgrade to the 38 GPU unit. I have a feeling the 38 GPU configuration would make a real improvement here and would tip the scale in favor of upgrading. Have you done any tests on this after you made this video? Thanks again for putting out such great content.
For now it uses 100% GPU, but once the bug with Apple NPU has been resolved it would move back there. Time wise I would look at my latest Mac Studio test and extrapolate. ruclips.net/video/f4EWI9jcnS0/видео.html I don't think that it would change the outcome much. May be a few second. I personally don't think that it is worth it
Great video, I really like the text graphics! Apple done a great job on the M1 and fine tuned it with the M2. Great shout for the refurb store, I picked up my MBP 14 M1 Pro and my mrs MBA M2 both with more memory and SSD. I admit the MBA M2 is so nice but I needed the better screen for my workflow. Do keep these coming along with any HDR related videos
Great focus on cpu cores Art! Kind of a narrow impact for now. If I go for a Max chip, I see a lot of value to also opting for 64 gb memory and 2TB storage. Unless you upgrade computer regularly I’d push one more level for longevity. Larger video files and future software bloat will be a big thing in 5-7 years.
@@ArtIsRight do you really think that software bloat over the next 5-7 years will cause 32GB of unified memory to not be enough for hobbyist video/photo editors? I'm looking at the 14" M2 Max with 30c/32gb/1tb.
what the reason to compare photographer Apps for m2 MAX, if it worth way more less power of your Mac for work VS videoWorking as PR AE Davinci and so one, with tonns of layers on timeline, online playback, and a lot of things that really needs this power of MAX chip)) for photo things you need way more less power
Run on sentence, thoughts, and type - really difficult to understand. From what I gathered, photo app does use GPU so showing the variation is important. You might not care and postulate this question but my community of pro photographers do. And the power of the MAX SoC is really just more GPU. Some video app takes advantage of this well, others not so much. And to over simply photo need for a huge swatch of creative pro is just short sighted at best.
Great video. Question ... does having 38GPU over 30GPU in a Mac Studio M2MAX improve multiple monitor use on any appreciable level? I plan on running 5 monitors. Only 2 possibly 4K, 3 lower than that.
Currently debating 10/32 m1 max 64gb vs 12/30 m2 max 32gb. Seems like m1 max is the right value for $2.7k usd? Gonna use it for unity development on the go as my desktop is used for something else on linux.
Hi Art. I am considering buying a Mac Studio M2 Max, 32GB Ram, 1TB SSD. I only plan to use it for video editing. Should I go for the 30 core GPU or 38 core GPU Mac studio?
Hey Art! I saw a video about the 14 inch 38 core GPU thermal throttling if the CPU and GPU are maxed. Did you do any test to see if the speeds are also down clocked on the 30 core 14 inch version? I would truly appreciate it and I am sure a lot more people would as well!
What is still so interesting is the speed improvements when creating 1:1’previews which for my workflow can make a huge difference when it shoot I can take up to 3k images and being able to cull faster in LRC is a big deal. Using the 14” MacBook while using LRC do you feel more cramped ?
I hear you. and yes 14" does feel a bit tight, although I want the lighter weight and more portability so 14 works well for me. I have the 16 and well and it is a beast to carry around.
Hi, I need your help to decide if I should go for 32gb or 64gb RAM on the M2 MAX. I use mainly for professional use of Lightroom and some Photoshop. I'm a wedding photographer and most work is on Lightroom.. around 1000 Raw files. Also using brushes ( local adjustments ). O casionally I doo some very basic editing in Final Cut. I've been told that 32gb would be more than enough but don't want to regret later not having 64gb...but at the same time don't want to be spending the extra 400 EUR if the results are going to be similar... any thoughts ? Thanks ;)
32 GB is the minimum but if you can budget it, 64 GB will give you more head room especially with brush usage and etc. If you keep your machine long-term then get 64GB if not then 32 GB should do. Also get the base M2 Max SoC not the one with the extra GPU.
Hi Art! Which do you think is a better deal? 2300 dollars for a new 14 inch m1 max with 24 core gpu, 32gb ram and 1tb of storage or 2800 dollars for new 14 inch m2 max with 30 core gpu, 32gb ram and 1tb storage? I'm an intermediate final cut video editor who also uses motion graphics. Any advice welcome!
Interesting, I would tell you to save your money and go with M1 Max for FCP and motion work. Use that money to buy apple care or see if you can get more RAM or storage. Hope this helps.
@@ArtIsRight cheers Art! I just realised I put dollars but meant to put pounds (I'm in the UK) but I imagine your suggestion would still be the same. I'll look into what you said! Thanks again
@artlsright great comparison I know that your channel is not about gaming but if can do the same models using ur analysis it would be outstanding I really liked the way that you think 😊

I have an intel Mac and want to upgrade and get the M2 14inch, thinking I will get the M2 Mac 1TB but not sure if I should get the 32gb ram or the 64gb ram? I mainly use it for design work, photoshop, video production and editing, animation, premiere pro, after effects. Thanks
How much RAM do you have now? Will this be your only machine? Do you tend to keep the machine long term? Do you run multiple apps at once? If the answer the to last 3 questions is yes, you might consider 64GB.
@@ArtIsRight thank you! I have the intel chip MacBook 16 with 64gb Ram 2tb hard drive, and it will be my only machine and I do run multiple apps at the same time. I guess I will go with the 64gb ram. Thank you
But if you get a 2nd-hand M1 Max and it's release date was around Oct '21 when macOS 12 (Monterey) was released, whereas M2 Max was released around Jan '23 after macOS 13 (Ventura) was released, so there's the risk that in the future Apple might say they'll stop providing updates to users with macOS 12 or earlier. For example I have a couple of old MacBook Pro's from late 2013 and Apple won't let me update to a version any later than macOS 10.15 (Catalina) from Oct '19. That's one of the reasons I'd be hesitant to buy a 2nd-hand one even from the official Apple store, plus the unlikely but still possible scenario of it been hacked through the supply chain somehow.
When it comes to M1 Max, there's just one gen regardless of release date and one can upgrade the OS on it. 7 years is about the time frame for the OS release. I hear what you are saying but MBP 2013 that gen has been capped at Catalina for sometime now. Second hard or getting it from apple or not has nothing to do with it. Sure M2 may last an OS or 2 longer, but that is just logical since it is one gen newer.
I have an option to buy either 14" M2 Max 12 core CPU 30 core GPU 64gb RAM or 16" M2 Max 12 core CPU 38 core GPU 32gb RAM. I am a photographer and hoping to dwell into videography and video editing once I buy M2 Max my current macbook pro 2019 base model cant even run Lightroom face masking feature. I use BenQ SW240 monitor with wavelink hub. I have seen that 14" is not efficient to have all CPU and GPU core utilized due to thermals making 16" more efficient. I have also heard everyone including you say that "more is more" when it comes to RAM. I am one of the people who keeps everything open at once on my mac. I want to avoid the mistake I did on 2019 purchase and make a sound decision. I intend to keep this laptop for atleast 6 years. Which one should I get for my usecase?
14" fan will kick on sooner but oveall 14 and 16 are going to be so close. It all depends. More GPU core does not do much in photo apps, I would choose more RAM
@@ArtIsRight Thank you, Art, as always for your response! Much appreciated. Just one quick question: with fans kicking in sooner and lesser GPU core, do you believe 14inch to be at lower performance than 16" considering Ill be editing 5k,6k, or even 8k video or any other gpu intensive task and would I be okay for atleast 5 years down the road for my workflow?
@@ArtIsRight thanks so much. I had almost canceled the decision in hopes to get 16" with 64gb. But now Im definitely going to buy 14" 64gb ram. I dont think Ive anything to complain and Art is always Right! Thanks a ton!
Hi I am a beginner user fpr MBP and I am a beginner for Video editing and photography, I want to purchase the MBP so my inquiry which MBP between this 2 model Apple M2 Pro 10-core CPU,16-core GPU and and 16-core Neural Engine 32 unified memory 1TB SSD storage or Apple M2 Pro 12-Core CPU,19-Core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine or 32 unified memory 1TB Ssd Storage. Or to save the money I can get the highest specifications by buying the old model as Apple MBP M1 Chip Pro or M1 Max.also my question is the 10-core CPU 16-core GPU slow speed. Hope you can recommend which model should I buy. Tks
I see, so first, I would recommend getting the base M2 Pro, the extra 3 GPU cores for $200 will do very little to justify the price increase. You are better off using that money to upgrade RAM. This said, M1 Max compared to M2 Pro, it does come really close. There are some advantages in the MAX with more GPU cores at a lower price point and it is still a solid machine today. So I would say, if you can get an M1 Max for a good price over the M2 Pro, go for it. Either of these machines, you can't go wrong.
@@ArtIsRight ok noted for the information in that case I will survey the M1 Max or if can effort getting the Latest the M2 Max.. have a great day thank you.
hello i am getting a new laptop for pentesting and programing, maybe few virtual machine at time,. what u suggest me, i am not editing video etc.. i was thinking get m2-max 32gb 1tb 14inch, some one suggest me a m2-pro 1tb 16gb.. i am not planning change machine in few years. thanks you.
Thanks for the awesome content. This is perhaps the only video that speaks specifically about 30 vs 38 GPU. I've been working from a 3.1 GHz Intel MacBook Pro 15 2TB ssd since 2017. So that means a "future-proof-lifespan" of 6 years. At the time it was almost the best machine available in the Apple lineup. Now i'm taking my time to choose my next laptop ion the hope of hit future proofing until 2030. I'm planning to do heaps of Final Cut videos, so speed and time saving means a lot. So, based on that, what do you think about this configuration: M2 MacBook 16 Pro Max 30 GPU , 32 RAM and 4TB ssd. Thanks for the awesome content.
It is a good config, however, I would audit your memory usage now. You probably have 16 right now so either way going to a 32 is an improvement. For me long-term use I would bump the memory up first and then the SSD, so I might trade 4TB for 2TB and bump the RAM up to 64GB. However, if you don't feel that you need this, what you have configured will do just fine.
@@ArtIsRight Thanks so much for taking the time to responding so thoroughly to my question. Highly appreciated! Still agonising about my purchase decision but I'll take your wisdom into account. Great channel! All the very best to you. New sub
You said that the stock M2 Max chip for the 16” MBP comes with 38Core GPU- that is not true. I bought one today from an authorized Mac Seller and it was brand new and its a 16” M2 Max with 64GB RAM and a 30 Core GPU, so your statement about that is not true.
Hi, I have a question. It’s so important because no one here on YT speak about the 14 inch MacBook Pro M2 Max 32ram 1tb with 12c CPU and 30c GPU but all speak about the 38c GPU version thermal throttling. So you have tested the 14 inch with 30c GPU, it’s better for the thermal throttling problem? I want to buy a 14 inch M2 Max 32ram 1tb 12-30 as I found it in super discount, at Apple it costs 3799€ and I found it at about 2889€. So it’s a big deal. Yeah maybe a 14 inch with M2 Pro 64 ram and 1tb could be better for keeping it for many years and for the thermal problem, as I want to use it for learning Adobe suite, video editing maybe with DaVinci Resolve and idk maybe some graphic design, UX/UI and programming, but for this specs i’m forced to configure it at the Apple website so more money than the deal I found. Idk. Thank you so much for a possible response and sorry if I’ve made some mistakes writing this but English is not my main language ;)
No worries. What others don't tell you is that it take quite a bit of work and pushing the computer hard to thermo throttle the machine and it is by design. Let me put it this way, if the size fits your needs and workflow, you can get it at a good price. Then I would jump on it. Thermo throttle or not. Don't worry about that. It might just run slightly slower for a short duration of time but in real world practical use, you probably rarely run into that issue. Other than long duration exports.
@@ArtIsRight thank you so much! You’re amazing. Yeah i think 14inch is the perfect size, as i don’t know if one day i will bring this with me, the 16inch for screen size its obv better but idk, the weight i think it’s too much. I’ve also found at the same price a 16inch M1 Pro 16ram 2tb but i think m2 max with 32ram and 1tb it’s way better, even with the compromise of the 14inch size ony.
SoC spec wise Max is better than Pro if you can use it, 32 GB is better than 16GB regardless of if you can use it or not. SSD space, you can always hook up external and expand, you can't expand RAM. And 14 or 16 just choose the size that you can travel with.
I have the option of getting the 32gpu 64gb ram 2tb Ssd 16in M1 Max for the same price as the 14in 30 gpu 32gb ram 1tb m2 max or paying extra for the 16in 38gpu m2 max 32gb ram 1tb, I think the M1 Max is a better deal but my only concern is the future, will the m1 continue to get software support? Whichever I buy I intend to stick with for the next 5 years, I’m not a pro by any means but I’m editing mainly videos for my RUclips channel in 4K with some color grading and light motion graphics titles and lower thirds etc.. 32gb ram is probably enough and more than I actually need but I want to get the better value of my money, do you have an insight on what I can get? Are the 2 efficiency’s core advantageous on top of better battery life in the long run? Or maybe the M1 Max will future proof better with those specs ?
M1 is fine, Apple probably won't drop support for those until closer to 2030, so you are good. Either way, they usually support the machine about 7 years or more once they have been released so you are good. Just look at the iPhone pros, most of them are still supported by the current os. And for the price I would go for the M1 max
@@ArtIsRight I just received an offer for a 16in 24gpu M1 Max 64gb ram 2tbSsd slightly cheaper than the the 32gpu, will maybe benefit more this configuration ?
@@ArtIsRight I’m from Brazil but I would translate I’d be something like the 24gpu 64gb would be 100 dollars less than the 30gpu m2 max and 300 dollars less than the 32gpu 64gb and about the same price as a 32gpu and 32gb ram 1tb Ssd
Ah I see, personally I would choose RAM first, based on the config that you choose, performance are going to be close to each other. So you won't see as much variation, but getting the RAM and SSD is crucial. I also give this a look, it outline what I am sharing with you now as well ruclips.net/video/aAJc0CTSUyk/видео.html

Great video! I ordered the 14" M2 Max with 30 GPU cores and 32GB RAM yesterday. I hope the maschine does not have any issues with thermal throttling. Did you test the thermal stuff, too? 🙂
This is NOT apples to apples. It just is not. The tiny 14" gets super hot so thermal throttling will absolutely affect the results. Otherwise, some good info still.
This is not accurate. Max techs testing is absolutely not indicative of real world scenarios. I push 6k timelines in a pro setting and have never ran into thermal throttling exporting 15-20 minute interviews. This is on a 12/30 14" m2 max

Great shout for the refurb store, I picked up my MBP 14 M1
Pro and my mrs MBA M2 both with more memory and SSD. I admit the MBA M2 is so nice but I needed the better screen for my workflow. Do keep these coming along with any HDR related videos
Thanks a ton!
Totally agree!
Exactly what I did.
@@ArtIsRight do you really think that software bloat over the next 5-7 years will cause 32GB of unified memory to not be enough for hobbyist video/photo editors? I'm looking at the 14" M2 Max with 30c/32gb/1tb.
GREAT VIDEO! WELL DONE!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey, thanks for the great and extensive comparison and analysis! How did you configure your machine?
What do you mean by this "How did you configure your machine?" Do you mean my configs, or why I configure it that way?
@@ArtIsRight I meant which chip did you choose for your MacBook Pro, how much SSD storage and RAM you took, whether you chose the 14" or 16"?
The specs are in the video. But if you ask for my person and non studio testing one, that would be the 14 MAX Stock config!
what the reason to compare photographer Apps for m2 MAX, if it worth way more less power of your Mac for work VS videoWorking as PR AE Davinci and so one, with tonns of layers on timeline, online playback, and a lot of things that really needs this power of MAX chip)) for photo things you need way more less power
Only 2 possibly 4K, 3 lower than that.
not much
Currently debating 10/32 m1 max 64gb vs 12/30 m2 max 32gb. Seems like m1 max is the right value for $2.7k usd? Gonna use it for unity development on the go as my desktop is used for something else on linux.
I would choose M1 Max with more RAM
today I got a m1 max 1tb / 64Gb open box ref from micro center for $1799 and it was just as a new laptop. I think I snagged a great deal.
Awesome!
Did you experienced throttle issue with the 14" max model ? How's the temps ?
temps are fine and no throttle issues. you have to pushed the laptop hard over a fairly long duration for this to happen
Thank you. You saved me $200
Nice!
Finally this comparison is made

Hi Art. I am considering buying a Mac Studio M2 Max, 32GB Ram, 1TB SSD. I only plan to use it for video editing. Should I go for the 30 core GPU or 38 core GPU Mac studio?
30 will do just fine
@@ArtIsRight thanks for the quick reply.
Hey Art! I saw a video about the 14 inch 38 core GPU thermal throttling if the CPU and GPU are maxed. Did you do any test to see if the speeds are also down clocked on the 30 core 14 inch version? I would truly appreciate it and I am sure a lot more people would as well!

@@ArtIsRight You'll do it?
Yeah it would be awesome to see if there is thermal throttling on base Max 14 inch model
Nicely done! With artificial denoise feature being out, it would be nice to test that out as well❤
You mean AI, yes that is included in my new tests
What is still so interesting is the speed improvements when creating 1:1’previews which for my workflow can make a huge difference when it shoot I can take up to 3k images and being able
to cull faster in LRC is a big deal.
@@ArtIsRight Thanks... will go for 64gb then :)
Still the same, yes!
Which one did you buy ? I’m between these two also , having trouble pulling the trigger

@artlsright great comparison I know that your channel is not about gaming but if can do the same models using ur analysis it would be outstanding I really liked the way that you think 😊
I'll keep that in mind. The issue too is that there are not many AAA games for Mac.
@@ArtIsRight This are just one of those that you could benchmark, all AAA titles:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Sid Meier's Civilization VI
Total War: WARHAMMER II
Divinity: Original Sin 2
XCOM 2
Batman: Arkham City - Game of the Year Edition
Borderlands 2
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
F1 2017
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
classic esports titles like rocket league, league of legends and cs:go. Are good to be bench cuz of how played those games are in general.
Hope this is handy info. Regards!
Thank you
Got cha, yes from the sound of it, I would choose 64 as well
At 22:00 the slide spec for m2 max has 10 cpu? Is there that option now on apples store?
probably a typo...
Why different size macbooks the cooling profiles of both are different adding more margin for error and skewing the results.
all with in margin of error and relativity. meaning that whoever buy these machines, won't be comparing the results with others and you would be fine.
Can you add a comparison for Lightrooms new Denoise feature across the apple chips? It’s per photo but takes minutes to do.

14" M2 Max 12 core CPU 30 core GPU 64gb RAM
14" fan will kick on sooner but oveall 14 and 16 are going to be so close. It all depends. More GPU core does not do much in photo apps, I would choose more RAM
@@ArtIsRight Thank you, Art, as always for your response! Much appreciated.
Just one quick question: with fans kicking in sooner and lesser GPU core, do you believe 14inch to be at lower performance than 16" considering Ill be editing 5k,6k, or even 8k video or any other gpu intensive task and would I be okay for atleast 5 years down the road for my workflow?
Performance is about the same, fan just kick in sooner because smaller thermo dissipation. GPU core is mostly irrelevant
@@ArtIsRight thanks so much. I had almost canceled the decision in hopes to get 16" with 64gb. But now Im definitely going to buy 14" 64gb ram. I dont think Ive anything to complain and Art is always Right!

30GPU is the base GPU. So sure.
I think so, depends on how much cheaper, but if I can get a deal for this config, I would go with it
@@ArtIsRight I’m from Brazil but I would translate I’d be something like the 24gpu 64gb would be 100 dollars less than the 30gpu m2 max and 300 dollars less than the 32gpu 64gb and about the same price as a 32gpu and 32gb ram 1tb Ssd
Ah I see, personally I would choose RAM first, based on the config that you choose, performance are going to be close to each other. So you won't see as much variation, but getting the RAM and SSD is crucial. I also give this a look, it outline what I am sharing with you now as well ruclips.net/video/aAJc0CTSUyk/видео.html

ok
This is not accurate. Max techs testing is absolutely not indicative of real world scenarios. I push 6k timelines in a pro setting and have never ran into thermal throttling exporting 15-20 minute interviews. This is on a 12/30 14" m2 max
