I'm sure you won't feel any difference with a weaker device. But if you want to really see RTX 4090 power you should check out 3d rendering. The RTX will eat your m2 Mac just like an apple😅.

Don’t do 3D right now and don’t care about it. Just resolve and Final Cut.

His machine would obviously wreck mine in both gaming and 3D

Really cool video! I'm about to update my editing rig and am of course struggling with the age old Mac vs. PC question. Just one note: Apparently your cousins PC is rocking a AMD CPU? I'm pointing this out because I believe Intel is the only CPU brand capable of decoding H.264 and H.265 in the background, like Apple Silicon also does. This makes video editing much smoother and is the reason why I'm looking to update my setup.

Wish we got some H265 rendering comparisons. S5ii 6k clips in H265 really break editing flows up harsher than BRAW by a lot for obvious reasons. Good tests all around.

Same here! My main device is also an M2 Max MBP that I bought officially refurbished. Just couldn't justify paying full price for it. And for the 1 year or so that I've daily driven it's absolutely fantastic when it comes to editing on resolve and general web browsing. And the biggest advantage I think the MBP trumps anything else is obviously the efficiency. However, the 32G ram sometimes do run out and can be very annoying and I couldn't play games on it. I mean, with playcover and whiskey you could play SOME games SOME of the time, but it's been really unreliable and the raw horsepower of M2 Max still isn't enough to handle higher graphic settings.
So I bought a PC, not with a 4090 but a 4080. But I do think this will be better off for me on both ends. Still keeping the MBP tho, for traveling.

32 GB. If you’re doing 4K video, photo editing, and either Final Cut or DaVinci I would recommend 32 at least.
In DaVinci you can get away with less (did a 16GB Mac mini for a long time)
But it isn’t ideal for longer lifetime usage.

Was there lots of 10bit 422 footage used in the tests? AMD cpus have no ASIC/s media engines, and both nvidia and amd gpus do not accelerate 10bit 422, only intel cpus do. So generally intel is the pick for video editors.

You are getting your creative work done on only 32gb? I had the m3 pro base spec and it only has 18gb of ram, which is like student laptop from 7 years ago grade. I Couldn't bget my video or photo work done on it and I constantly felt the slow down from the ram starvation. I was wondering if the 36gb max would be enough but I kinda doubted it. But if you're saying you're getting simmilar performacne to a good desktop pc with only 32gb then maybe it would work for me.

No doubt Resolve is more optimized for macs. BM def has bias for apple and even they've released Resolve for macos first decades ago but Fusion on the other hand was first developed on DOS and then ported to windows and has been a windows exclusive until BM bought them and then ported it to macos and linux so if you were using Fusion studio, you would've noticed some huge differences.
But other than that, apple silicons have media engine inside to boost/accelerate certain workflows with encoding and decoding which is why it's being praised by video editors so much but for any pro 3d work it's an absolute dodo water. So if you get a PC, the intel ones have ipgu in it which helps with intel quick sync and that helps with video encoding and decoding. And make sure you get Nvidia GPU. DO NO GET AMD GPU for any creative work, NVIDIA with its studio drivers has optimized most creator-related programs and will fly with most GPU accelerated programs.

I am a 4090 editor. Things it does at about 2xs the speed of apple. Noise reduction, magic mask, and depth mapping. Also, others, but this is off the top of my head. If those are common things you use, consider a 4090.
We bought pre built dell Xps with 4090s for around $3400. That's not a horrible price imo.
Also, you didn't say what CPU you used. If you're doing video editing, you want an Intel cpu. One with the integrated gpu. Intel offer their chips with and without the gpu. You want there gpu for like 20 extra bucks. This gives you more hardware decoders. If you are editing h.265 10bit 4.2.2 footage without the intel gpu, you don't have hardware decoders, and it tanks performance.

This is good to know, he was rocking an AMD CPU which could have been a big reason for what we were seeing.
But yeah, like you said there are definitely wins for a 4090 build.
But my point and story was if you like apple, you can go Apple Silicon these days and not feel like you are missing out on much at all in terms of video editing :)
(obviously 3d and gaming aren't part of this video for a reason)

I guess there's a big difference, since now I actually see that from the Color page Magic Mask runs very fast. Is Fusion more CPU dependent and my i9-9900K is simply slow for it?
