In this video I show you how to replace the most common coolant leak source on a 2006-2010 Ford Explorer- The Radiator.
Fan clutch Wrench Size- 36mm
Ford Gold Coolant Part# VC-7-B Approx 2 Concentrated Gallons Required
If you want to go aftermarket Radiator go with Spectra Premium so far I have had zero problems with them.
-Other common leak sources include the water pump and thermostat housing.
Thank you so much for this video! I was quoted $900 for radiator replacement through my local Ford Dealership. Watching this video gave me the confidence to tackle the project myself. I checked my local auto parts store and found a (Spectra) replacement radiator for $239.99, and had the job complete within 4 hours. Thats a savings of $660!
$900??? On Long Island they want $ 2750 to replace a 2010 radiator at the dealership.
I'd like to add an update to my comment from a little over 3 years ago. First off, thanks again for the video. It made the replacement so much easier with the detail you provided. The Spectra Premium radiator however did not live up to my expectations. Just after 30k miles and 3 years it began to leak at the bottom where the plastic tank connects to the condenser. I did only 1 fluid flush and replace in that time, but it was all clean with no residue. I know replacement units are a crap shoot but I just wanted to relate my experience for consideration. Thanks again.
All your videos are extremely helpful, but also they make me really happy that they don't salt the roads where I live. My 27 year old car is still rust free
lucky!
seriously thank you so much for this video I'm a single mom and I successfully did it by myself wooohooooo!
+Alexandra Eccleston Wow I am impressed!!
Your Amazon recommendation shows two Spectra Premium radiators for the 2006 Explorer with 4.6L engines. CU 2952 which is the one I guess you used, and the CU 2816. What is the difference? Which one is the best?
Apparently Spectra is the best aftermarket in terms of quality and have lower failure rates than other aftermarket brands. The PSI rating on the radiator has to be 20 psi and many aftermarket radiators are only 16 or 18 PSI which means they will fail from too much pressure. I guess Spectra makes their replacement radiators to withstand 20 PSI for Ford Explorers and are as close to OEM as you can get.
DUDE - you are awesome!!! That was the most professional, perfect camera angled, clearly explained video I have ever seen in my freakin life. Better than Eric The Car Guy and Scotty K, put together.........................
Wow thanks! On this day I actually had a camera man!
Thank you for this great video. I replaced my radiator with a Spectra a few days ago in my '08 V6 SportTrac. I didn't have the 36mm wrench for the fan or transportation to get one, but was able to twist the passenger side radiator support out of the way towards the engine and remove the radiator that way without removing the fan.
This is one of the best instructional videos out there! was able to replace mine in about three hours (not including trip to advance to buy the quick release tool $7-8 :-) i thought i had already). My oem radiator was also zip-tied at the two ears that
Support it either side so need to snip those to get it out. At the very end you also mention remembering to top up the transmission fluid so its worth folks searching for a how to vid before starting this as they'll need some atf, a fluid pump, and adapter fitting to do that.
I just completed replacing the radiator in my 06 Explorer 4.6L with a Spectra radiator and have just two comments. I had the same problem with removing the transmission lines and as suggested, removed the fittings from the old transmission and installed them in the new one. The internal fittings inside the new radiator are kind of floating, so it's much easier to install the old fittings one at a time by leaving one side tight until you get the threads started on the other side. Also with checking the transmission fluid level, be careful with the yellow plastic dipstick as they are very brittle and can drop back into the transmission. Mine broke when I wiped it clean with a paper towel. Also I saw this on Ford Forum to be common. I ordered a new one but I'm not going to install it in the transmission and only use it to check fluid level. Thanks again, this is a great video as all the other ones you have posted.
Great video, big help in a replacement I just finished, thanks!! Sport Trac Job 1 early build version, until 8/7/2006, specs a different radiator than shown in the above videos. Mine was built 3/29/2006, I used Spectra CU 2816. Fit perfect and Dorman 800-621 fittings threaded right in. I did not have to remove the fan.
Very few tools are needed to complete this job. Large socket for the trans cooler fittings is 27mm. Sockets needed are 8/10/13 mm. Long extensions, magnet, and pick tool are suggested.
Thanks for this video. It got me through the job on my 2007 Sport Trac with a 6 cylinder. Ordered the Spectra Premium as you suggested. It came with both types of connecters and I used the ones with the double o-rings. Kind of a pain rebolting the ac condenser back on to the radiator bracket but a little swearing went a long way.
great step by step breakdown/refit. It is a struggle somewhat to get the radiator/condenser units slid in. The CU2816 Spectra Premium comes with two different types of transmission line couplers which are for your choice of fit. The tank threads will not accept a Dorman 800-621 which is a M18 X 1.50The CU2816 is a M20 X 1.50 tank thread or 3/4" X 1.50
Well done, the old unit in this video looked like a replacement unit to begin with. Prob why you did not have a hard time getting the condenser separated from the rad assembly. First time on this can be a PITB! Also good to note the style changed in August 06...don't know what the difference is..? FLB
Thanks for this video. You do great step-by-step and great camera work.
I have a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer Premier. I did not have to remove the fan, but everything was identical to the video (except the trans cooler line connectors were a different type/size than the old ones.
Mine is leaking. Ford wants $998 installed. I got the tools. I may just do it myself.
I just changed the radiator in my 06 Mercury Mountaineer. Thanks for this Video! Couldn't have done it without it!
The rear heater hose clamps also rust away and make for a leak behind the fuel tank that you'll never suspect without pressure tsting. Take a look if you have a difficult-to-locate leak!
Behind the fuel tank. Can you explain please? Thanks
this was so helpful!! Really appreciate you taking the time to post this video!
Great video sir, very detailed. I am about to attempt to replace the radiator in my 08 Sport Trac with the 4.6 v8. My question is, do I have to remove the fan or can I make the change with it still on? That is the only thing that spooks me about this. Again, I appreciate the work you put into the video, an excellent job.
Good video, kind of makes me think at 65 I'd have to desperate to attempt this, you make this look easy but it clearly is not. I would attempt it with some help only if I had a video of my exact year and model.
i recently changed a radiator out on an 08 explorer, I did not remove the fan and had no problem, this was a v6 model. I know the instructions tell you to in the dealer repair information and alldata. so if you do not have a special wrench for the fan, this may help you.
chris keiley thanks working on one right now, glad i dont have to take it off
well i hope this trick saves you time. most vehicle require you to remove radiator and condenser as an assembly/ service information. not at all practical for dyi.
@@chriskeiley5343 not sure if you'll see this or not since it's been a couple of years. But I'm gonna be replacing my radiator. If I don't have to remove the fan, that'd be awesome! So basically just follow the steps on here and just skip the fan removal part and all will be good?
@@nickaroni87 it did work for me, again this trick only helps on the v6 models. I wish you the best of luck.
@@chriskeiley5343 that's what I have 😎 that should save me some extra time. Thanks! Happy New Year🎉🎉🎊
Should I expect to lose enough transmission fluid that I have to add some? If so, would it make sense to drop the transmission pan and replace the fluid and filter at the same time as replacing the radiator?
Thanks.
- Joe
good job man ...thank you for this...from mexico.
Excellent, clear instructions - thank you! I have a slow leak and just ordered a spectra with the A/C line and fan removal tools. My 06 explorer has 105,000 miles and I've had it about 20,000 of those - would you look at anything else while the radiator and fan are out?
Yes check the water pump very carefully that is the second most common coolant leak on these. If you have never changed the thermostat at that mileage I would change it while the cooling system is drained. They are know to stick open and set P0128 codes like crazy.
Great, thank you!
Is this radiator change the same for a 2010 Ford Explorer V6. If so I am in.
Thanks a bunch for this fantastic video
Is it necessary to remove the fan? or does removing it make it easier to get the radiator out?
I really appreciate your videos, but I have a question about removing the radiator on my 2010 4.0 Explorer. When you pull the radiator, you have to disconnect the transmission lines that go into the bottom of it. Do you have to top off the transmission fluid afterwards? I don't know exactly how much ATF you lose or how low you can run. I had to pull my radiator less than a year ago, and I replaced the transmission filter and fluid at that time, so I don't want to drop the transmission pan again unless I have to. Thanks!
- Joe
Yes you must adjust the fluid level about a half a quart or so.
Thank you so much!
I still had to cut my transmission cooler fittings off. I bought the proper tool and it still wouldn't budge. I used a cutoff tool on my dremel tool and cut around the perimeter right by where the lock ring is. The new style is a single split lock ring that I haven't seen in any other videos.
Unfortunately for me, I had a second leak at the coolant T that splits off to the rear heater. How common is this? I found this after doing the CA grapevine. Fortunately all held up but getting new heater lines done at Ford while kids are at Disneyland. Them's the breaks I guess.
Those rear heater tees at the valve cover all leak! Every darn one of them.
@@eegg6954 Found out later that the rear heater line passes within millimeters of the exhaust manifold, so the line burned through. A year later after a "dealer" repair, it burned through again. Apparently the dealer in Anaheim didn't route the hose away from the exhaust manifold. I tried to contact them from Canada but they ignored me. That was over $1000 USD wasted. Wasn't happy.
Thanks for your clear and concise video! Perfect! Any idea how many quarts the trans cooler holds inside the radiator? (What did you add to the 6R60 to top it off?)
I would say about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart
Kind of off topic but I'm hoping you can help me. I recently noticed my 06 Eddie Bauer was drinking coolant heavily due to the fact that my heat would blow ice cold at idle and then hot under power. Anyway, there is no leak that I can tell, no coolant in the snow under the vehicle. I would say head gasket but what do you think? Also if you knew the approximate repair cost, thanks.
+1
I have a serious leak from my 98 explorer. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the radiator, but there is coolant all over down there. I'm wondering if it might be a loose hose too or something. Thoughts?
Hey I purchased a radiator and the transmission cooler lines fitting are larger then the stock ones. The new radiator came with new hardware but there was no instructions. The autopart guys said to remove the old fittings and install the ones that came with the new one. I have remove one of them and the fitting that came with the new one is different then the old ones. The new one came with both the quick connect and bolt that was on the original radiator just slightly large. ( Threads don't line up.
Need some direction I have the new radiator installed except the coolant lines.
Thanks man the Video is spectacular.
JD
JD Clements The replacement radiator should have the correct ones installed something is not right here. Is it possible to used the old ones and put them on the new radiator?
FordTechMakuloco Not that I can see. everything lines up I have everything back in place. The only difference is that the trans cooler line connections are larger. I have been to 2 different auto parts stores in the area and both of the replacement radiators have the same larger fittings. Crazy I and not sure how the quick connect fitting get attached to the metal cooler line. The fitting looks exactly like the one in your video. Do you know how if the quick connect fitting needs to be replaced how to install the new one?
Thanks man
what do you used for teke out the fan ?? please What kind of tools??
what is the name of the hose that go to the radiator at the bottom . ( i have a 2006 explorer and in fl they took it out and add a fan
Thanks for this video. Was a great help!
Mine is barley starting to leaking thanks for the video 👌🏼
Great video. I need to do this soon.
Question - I've been told my seeping radiator is a "cold weather problem" - the contracting plastic opens seals in Minnesota winters. Then, it heat seals when warm so the problem can't be found in pressure testing. Sound accurate? And is there a non plastic model you'd suggest for tougher climates? (2006 ford expl xlt)
These radiators are made to go from -40 to over 200 degrees. While true the plastic, metal and seal will contract in the cold they are made for it and will seal. We have had luck with the Spectra premium brand. They all have plastic end tanks.
Do you reprogram the fan speed control after replacing the radiator? I have replaced 2 radiators on an 06 Explorer and the radiator shop said they need to be reprogrammed and this is why so many radiator failures with Explorers. Is this true?
958kris Yes reflash them while doing the radiator repairs. The new reflash has an updated cooling strategy.
@@FordTechMakuloco would this still need a reflash on a 2009 explorer?
Thanks for the video. I need to replace my "replaced" (lol) radiator in my V6 2006 EB Explorer. Seems pretty straight forward.
Interesting was it a non oem radiator the first time?
I purchased the Explorer from a Ford dealer Service Manager. He had it replaced a few months before I bought the vehicle. It's been 3 years and about 40,000 miles and now it's leaking again around the top.
Don Teifke
Man oh man you might as well go for the 100-250 radiators from TYC or Spectra as the ford one is like $500 I believe. I personally like spectra premium for an aftermarket. In this video I am warranting a TYC for my customer.
FordTechMakuloco I'll look into those. Thanks.
does this apply for a 4.0 2007 sport trac? Does it come out the top or bottom when you remove the radiator
Elwood Anderson Yes same setup it comes out the top.
I have a 2010 Explorer I put a new Spectra premium radiator in and it came back running hot and the coolant looks like a pink milk shake! Any suggestions?
+luke tyree yeah the trans cooler inside is leaking somehow
my repair is a 06 limited 4.0l. It looks like I might have enough room with the fan left in place. Think its do-able guy?
+YessaBub1 I think you might be able to but the problem is you have to go pretty far forward to bypass the mounts and ABS module so the extra room really helps and prevents damage to the radiator.
Okay. Thanks for the advice. I also saw you had the lisle pneumatic wrench set, but would a standard fan clutch nut wrench set work? Awesome videos! Nice to see attention to detail and pride in your work. subscribed!
@@mattmachine5 Put a regular fan wrench on it, rap it hard on top with a mallet and the nut will loosen right up.
Hi, I'm from Colombia, I have a Sport trac 2007 4000 cc V6, In I am very disappointed with Ford, one year ago I had to change the radiator and now returned to leak, also three months ago I had to repair the automatic gearbox. out every day more and more damage. in your opinion should be back to buy a Ford?
I would, you just have a year that is bad for those types of failures? Was the radiator a ford oem version or aftermarket?
Good job. Thanks
What did you do about the transmission fluid line connections?

My mom just had this problem this morning we found all the the green oil looking thing in the parking lot were going to get this checked out but I'm sure its the same problem and how much would you think she'll charge us for this?

Is this kind of leak related to electrolysis, I believe I check ours a few months ago I was getting a 0.3v reading with engine running and all accessories I could put on, is this ok I thought ford said 0.4v or lower but that seemed high
This is not related to electrolysis, it is the radiator end tank crimp/ seal area that is the defective from a manufacturing standpoint. Yeah I believe 0.4v is the max they say. If there is any doubt do a flush of the cooling system.

What tool did you use to remove the fan clutch? It had an impact gun on it??
The tool I used is a Lisle- LIS443300 pneumatic fan clutch tool, it is used with an air hammer.
My radiator randomly spit out about a half cup of coolant in 15 seconds after driving around and parking it. Has not leaked since in a week. Not sure what to think about it.
Spectra ?? Motorcraft is down to $250. They've had 13 years to figure out how to make them last more than five years, so maybe they're good? Still Made in USA. I don't tempt fate, so I replaced the 20# cap with a 16# one.
OK. How do you "Reflash Them". I have no idea what this means????? I don't know how to "reprogram the fan speed". Thanks for the many great videos. I will subscribe to your channel. Take care.

i change my radiator two day ago and now i don't know where the coolant is going there is no leak on the ground, please help?????
Internal leaks are not common, so at this point make sure the system is burped before going further.
Does this work for a 2003
I have a 06 Mercury Mountaineer V8 same setup as this ford. I have a 1in crack across the upper plastic housing of my radiator (under the reservoir) and that is the source of my leak. I called Ford to see if I need to update the PCM with TSB 09-8-1 or any other when I replace the radiator and they said there wasn't any PCM update for my V8. So is it ok for me to just go through with the procedure in this vid and be done with it?
While there is likely an update to the pcm it may or may not contain a revised cooling strategy, the tsb was for the v6. I would do what is shown in the video to replace it but I would also replace the rad cap and thermostat at the same time as they are known failure points also. Spectra premium radiators is a good alternative to the outrageous Ford radiators.
Wow thanks for the insight, its much appreciated!!

Is the radiator replacement the same for an 07 Explorer 4.0L V6? The video above is for the V8. Mine does not have the special quick connect on the trans lines. Do I have to remove the fan? I have removed fans with exterior bolts but not one with one nut between the fan and engine. Should I replace the water pump since I have the radiator out of the way or does that not matter? One video showed removing the rad. to replace the water pump. E-mail me at keith.filson@att.net
They all came with those quick connects. Yes you need to remove the fan as shown since the radiator must come to the engine quite a bit to get it out. Water pumps are not too common but if you have the money sure. The radiator does not have to come out for water pump replacement there is plenty of room.
