i use this camera at work for corporate gigs etc and think it's a great bit of kit. You can easily and cheaply buy an external XLR adaptor, stick it to the bottom of the cam and there you go the main downside to this cam (no XLR input) is sorted, I'd definately recomend this as a cheap way to achieve professional standards, go for it!
The way I look at it is this. This is the best camera for $1500. The next best is about $3500, the next best after that is about $7500. The nice thing about going Prosumer though is you can also compare older used equipment to these and save a bunch of money. But if you are looking for the best new stuff, it is quite a leap to get any better than this in this price range. Only difference in this price range is if you want a smaller cam/hard drive, etc. If so, look4cams with canon lens.
Very good beginnger camera, I think. And I am aware that it is a shoulder mount version of a consumer HC-7 camera. I've been using the HD1000U for almost two years now, and I've had a lot of fun with it. It has a very good manual ringh, and plenty of space to mount the light and wireless receiver. And I highly recommend getting the GV-HD700 deck with it. It's a great combo together. This camera is simply too big to lug it everytime to transfer video to the compuer.
@ImHomeAtLast : Its not hard you just connect the camera via Firewire onto your Pc and the editing programm does the rest... Also dv-Tapes are really cheap and you can easily archive them!
I just used my new sony cam yesterday at a live orchestra concert. The professional look of the camera was a big attention getter. It may be possible that some customers who aproached me for business cards were due to the professional look of the cam.
yes I know but the problem i need a big look for the documentary and shortmovies, I mean its all about psychology people who dont know anything about editing think a small camera means bad quality, its sad but true thats why i need this pro-appearance.. thx anyway my friend Tino from Spain
Well, the camera is very small inside, it's actually a consumer camera inside of a big hollow body. But, I've had it for two years now, and I don't regret the purchase. Although the image quality is poor at low light and the mic preamps are noisy, the camera has many advantages. The nice big manual ring, space to mount wireless receiver, stability on the shoulder, I mean, what's not to like?
Ive shot both with An EX1 and with tapes both have pros and cons with Hard Drives u dont need to worry about head clogs and logging and transferring is less time consuming but tapes give you a hard copy of the raw footage incase something crash's and batch capturing isnt hard
I thin i will get this camera for christmas , but in my opinion the disadvantage is that there is no XLR... but is there any kind of XLR adapter for this camera that you can buy seperately? Please answer!
I also possess a camcorder sony hd 1000 and I am very pleased with the results and 'should be used with a camcorder but enough light' but with the light goes really well hello!!
Yeah well what I dont like with little cameras like the HG10 is that you got no stability. Its great if you want to shoot a bbq or a family reunion but if you want to make a school project or anything :S. I want to go for a full size cam. Apparently you know that much more than me so fi you have any suggestion...
My camcorder is equipped with two LED spotlights YONGNUO DYD 1509 for low light situations (they are really very good) A ZOOM H4N Stereo microphone and a tele converter lens Sony VCL 1.5 by 1558 with adapter ring works really well .
Well I tried walking with camera while holding it by the neck on several occasions but I dont really like it as it takes a lot of place, especially when you're trying to film in public places.. If I had to buy my first pro/affordable camera, what would you recommend?
@spellboundtube yea Provisual Direct only do gray imports, nearly bought a camera of them myself, but their lack of a phone number and dodgy evasive support made me shop somewhere else...
Why the camera is never seen in front of the lens? Maybe for the hilarious design of a 54mm optical? Really, I prefer to make me see with a palm FX1 (but also any SD camera with same price) with a arm support and ALL the buttons and filters, rather then have a "look" and counted functions. I also have a HC7 (identical lens and electronics) and for that I excluded it from my shoppings, I picked a FX7 and I suggest it to all PRO users; hobbyst and dreamers can build a carrer with this box anytime.
The only good thing in this camera is the 1COMS chip and the big camera which appears more professional, but its too automatic and even are not recording neither in 25fps nor in HD just HDV! But the price is not bad (1500 euros)
The only benefits i can see about buying this over the xr550v is that it looks pro and has bigger buttons and nobs etc. That's bout it, I'm gettin the 550v don't care if it's smaller.
Can you please tell me what's the optical zoom on these. The reason I'm asking is because somebody told me it has only 10X zoom but I see a 20X on the actual camera. Could you please let me know with more accurate info. Thanks a lot.
how hard is it to get the mini dv onto pc and what format is it most liekely going to be in? sucks you cant just record on to the memory stick it clearly has
Just a question, have you seen the difference in person between uncompressed tape and the same footage from an HDD recorder from the same camera? Just want to know if the difference really is that noticable.
Hi Everyone please I need more clarification about this camcorder, 1. Is the lens interchangeable and if yes, what kind of mount does it use? 2. Is the video output from the HDMI clean because I would like to use external recorder to capture uncompressed video.
+Ayoola Ekunboyejo It's a consumer camcorder in a large, mostly hollow body, and no it does not have interchangeable lens. It outputs HDMI, but you get the same quality output as from a consumer camcorder.
+Andrew Piatek Thanks for the clarification. Do you know if the HDMI signal is uncompressed? I want to use Atomos Ninja 2 to record the footage in 10bit Prores format.
+Ayoola Ekunboyejo Strangely it doesn't mention in the user's manual. On some forums I read it outputs 1920x1080 4:2:2 via HDMI. I connected it once to the TV via HDMI, but I don't recall if image quality was any better or not. I sometimes record tethered to the computer using Sony i.LINK cable, but haven't tried recording from HDMI. If the manual doesn't suggest to record from HDMI, I would assume it's probably not worth to bother with such camcorder. I believe camcorders with SDI output are designed for uncompressed output, but that would produce large files, since uncompressed output is like 3GBits/sec for HD, which is lots of data. A test to do would probably be to record from HDMI and compare file size to what's coming out if the i.LINK. My computer has HDMI port, but I'd think it's more to connect it to a TV and output image, not to input anything via it. I am a person who reads the user's manual front to back, and strictly follow that. If they don't even mention HDMI output video specification in the manual, it's probably not worth recording. They illustrate dubbing to an i.LINK equipped cassette recorder, but no mention of using HDMI for recording.
+Andrew Piatek this is noted. I got the camera as a gift so I am trying to see if it's truly useful for me. My Sony A6000 outputs uncompressed 8bit 4.2.2. as well.
+Ayoola Ekunboyejo Well, I just connected the HVR-HD1000U to the TV, and the output is surprisingly good. I don't see any compression artifacts. I clearly see compression artifacts on TV programs, but not from this camcorder. Sure, there is noise from the sensor, but I don't see any compression artifacts.
Hi i am looking for a camera that i can use to' make good music videos & short films..can any tell me which camera will be' best for what i want??? The camera gas to' be' around £500 to' £900??
Totally irrelevant observation: The couple in the wedding scenario is pretty unrealistic considering she's pretty hot and he's got a huge ponytail. That's all.
I have one of these, and it's not bad, but... you have to take a lot of ridiculing, like friends laughing at you that it's an '80s camcorder and that it use tape, bwaahhhaaahhha. I get a lot of these comments. But the video comes out good with good lighting (well, it will come good with good lighting on any camera, actually). Still, this handless quite smooth on a tripod, and has very usable manual control ring for focus, exposure, etc. And you can actually use the ring on the lens
christ theres a lot of stupid comments on here. A camera is only as good as the hands its in with few exceptions. This is a kick ass lil camera I've not used one, but from what I have read and seen this is a camera even a IDIOT can get good results. As a professional cameraman I wouldn't buy it, its single chip, exposure doesn't have a ring, and I find servo assisted focus just stupid - personal preference I guess.
HY BRO HOW ARE YOU I HAVE A SONY HDV P1000 CAMERA I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THIS CAMERA CANNOT RECORD VIDEO MY BRO PURCHASED A SONY HDV P1000 CAMERA ID HAS TO SYSTEM ONE HDV SMALL FILM AND SECOND IS MEMORY CARD SYSTEM AND I WANT TO RECORD VIDEO IN MEMORY CARD BUT MY THAT CAMERA DOES NOT RECORD VIDEO IN MEMORY CARD IT CAPTURE JUST PICTURES IN MEMORY CARD AND JUST RECORD VIDEO IN HDV FILM

you can FF to the part of the tape you need and log and capture which is why it's important to bring log sheets and record your time code
this video camera is so fucking beautiful no kidding i recommend this camera to everyone! ^^
yes you can get a beachtec audio adapter and mount it on the side
Ive shot both with An EX1 and with tapes both have pros and cons with Hard Drives u dont need to worry about head clogs and logging and transferring is less time consuming but tapes give you a hard copy of the raw footage incase something crash's and batch capturing isnt hard
man, i would love to have a nice shoulder mount camera like this!!!!
@lorddinaire Not with this model, but the mc2000u you can, same exact body, different codec.
Man, i want this camera!!!
I would maybe buy this camera.
But is it worth the money or are there better?
Where on this camera can you record with XLR lapel microphones or is it possible to do interviews on this camera.
cool I used to have one how do you transfer to the computer
I thin i will get this camera for christmas , but in my opinion the disadvantage is that there is no XLR... but is there any kind of XLR adapter for this camera that you can buy seperately?

I also possess a camcorder sony hd 1000 and I am very pleased with the results and 'should be used with a camcorder but enough light' but with the light goes really well hello!!
I see it has a hard drive accessory on it is for video recording or just for the pics etc

Does the camera have a Microphone input?
So you can have an extern microphone, usefull for a broadcast from an event.
Well I tried walking with camera while holding it by the neck on several occasions but I dont really like it as it takes a lot of place, especially when you're trying to film in public places..

how come there is no promo video in sony website?
they should make one for this camera
and they should make one who is using it

Hi, is this camera able to record dirctly to a memory card instead of tape ?
hello, 480p
also it's clear they are no Stanley Kubrick.
@PeterPW The bride is kinda cute. :)
Just a question, have you seen the difference in person between uncompressed tape and the same footage from an HDD recorder from the same camera? Just want to know if the difference really is that noticable.

Is that Röyksopp?
Kind of Ironic that the video isn't even in HD.
Totally irrelevant observation: The couple in the wedding scenario is pretty unrealistic considering she's pretty hot and he's got a huge ponytail. That's all.
what kind of HD digital file is it? mts? mov?
i'm considering obtaining this cam.
thanks!!!
What is a better camera for 2000$?
is this cam in pal or ntsc
@BrothaRollins no u will need an adapter thats one real con of this cam
what about hvr-a1u I heard thats the next step up
Transferring with tape is a PITA though, and you have to stop recording every 60 or 85 minutes.
I have one of these, and it's not bad, but... you have to take a lot of ridiculing, like friends laughing at you that it's an '80s camcorder and that it use tape, bwaahhhaaahhha. was that mystery the pick up artist?

NP

Does anybody watch Hell's Kitchen on FOX? Doesn't that bride look like that one girl? What's her name? Erica...or something.
christ theres a lot of stupid comments on here. A camera is only as good as the hands its in with few exceptions.
