The doilies were so pretty as well; my grandmother made doilies putting together with what she called yo-yos. A yo-yo is made from a small circle of cloth with a running stitch around the edge; when you pull the thread it puckers in the middle then the edges can be tatted together with one another, creating a sort of fabric. ❤❤Judy❤❤

I used to spend every Saturday going around the charity shops in Petts Wood, Orpington, not so much now days, not so many bargains to be found anywhere really, bring back jumble sales!! You got some real treasures. I’m from Arkansas, USA. Many years ago I had the opportunity to visit London with my employer, a needlework designer. We were with a group of high class ladies but I hoped to slip away and do some second hand shopping. I didn’t realize your thrift stores were called charity shops so when I looked in the phone book I couldn’t find any thrift stores. I did stumble across one shop while walking around our last day there and brought home a few treasures. I would love to be able to go back to the UK alone & visit all the charity shops. The museums, tower & changing of the guards were great to see but I think the charity shops would be more fun. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.💕
Yes! Thrift is definitely an American word but I have seen more UK creators use it to talk about charity shops! Ohh definitely come back, there’s some fab shops in and around London for secondhand!🙌☺️

Aww amazing! If you do come to the UK and plan on visiting Kent, maybe do Orington/Petts Wood on a day visit because it’s a little underwhelming without the charity shops in my opinion 😂 but Kent has some gorgeous walking/hiking trails!
Great finds! Do you have a Scrapstore near you? The one I go to has lots of donations of fabric, notions, craft books etc. Businesses donate to Scrapstores to save things going to landfill. Lush donates to ours, I've had some lovely tins to use as storage. :)

But then I realized you were saying "applique!" Haha! In the U.S. we pronounce it with the emphasis on the first syllable. The "a" sounds like the "a" in "app", and the "i" in "pli" sounds like the "i" in "if", instead of an "eeee" sound, so it's "AAA- pli-kay." I love England! I wish I could visit often (only been to London one time), but it's so expensive to visit from the U.S., and the exchange rate with the dollar is brutal. Hopefully, I will get rich soon and then I will visit many times a year! lol

I think it's just one of those words that British and American people pronounce differently (like "garage" and "laboratory.") I think it's fun to learn about the language differences :)
Just finished sorting my piles of fabric scraps by colour and felt the same delight of seeing your thrift finds. I agree its feels much better than having whole racks of the same design. I'm not making clothing but I love seeing how you match colour and pattern. 🎉 ❤
I LOVE vintage fabric and love what you create with it! Those red pieces @ 17:00 are called Yo Yo puffs. They are fun to make and those that you found are amazing! You cut out a circle of fabric - fold over the edges and then run a thread around the edge when pull tight and you have a puff. Really fun to make but do take a bit to make.
They are antimacassars,those crocheted things. My grandmother used to make them. They are hardy! Still have a few! People used to use them on the arms of chairs.
I am in envy of your purchases. I have used a cicular tablecloth to make a skirt. I cannot get enough of charity shops. Watching your videos have taught me so much about colour combining and to think outside the box. Thank you.
The 2 heads you got are textile /sewing related. You are supposed to make a cloth body for the head and glue or sew them on. I can see you have one with little holes in that’s for sewing it to the cloth body. German I think ❤

I love fabrics. They make me smile. I have just decided to have a huge clear out. As I only want things I truly love.i have BPD, ADHD and I go through phases. So my boss had a field day going though my clothes. Next time you visit you Japan go to Osaka we have just returned and I found a mom and pop shop you would have been in your element. Clothes were between 2-7 pounds! I am flying to visit my family on Friday as my mum is unwell . So I am going shopping lol

My local one in Egletons has a sewing and textiles section. Came out the other day with a haul of 4 1960's teatowels, some coordinating vintage fabric, several embroidered pieces and lots of sewing and embroidery thread all for 8 euros. If you ever wanted to visit you would be an honoured guest.... Just bring an extra suitcase!

I believe on the backs of chairs was to stop the ‘brill cream’ the men wore in their hair in those days , marking/staining the chair. The arms of the chairs were also covered as they would get the most wear. So they would help to stop it happening so quickly.

Okay…first thing is you have to make a corset top -they are so fun to make. And secondly, you can use Dollie’s & crocheted trim for your clothing too! Just add onto bodices for texture n dimension-will make your pieces very pretty and unique ❤
I know exactly the feeling you get going through all those fabrics! What bargains! I’m a regular visitor to the thrift shops in my area, but there are only two nearby. My sweet daughter bought me some lovilyness on her holiday as a gift, but I’ve just seen them on photos yet. I wish we were closer (I live in Sweden) then I would love to meet up and gladly let go and give you of a load of my stash as I have way to much ❤️ My latest project aimed to use lots of my scraps, I made patchwork covers to six of our dining chairs! Turned out gorgeous and eclectic and no one has the same! I also painted the chairs.

Found a unique shop in a small town called Paris (Southern Ontario Canada) that have some absolutely gorgeous tea towels! ( new) I brought one the back of a young girl in a lavender fieldMuted colours of blue lilac pale pale brownish/cream . Am planning to make a midi skirt with the tea towel as the front panel am however having some difficulty finding material for the rest of the skirt! Scoured a couple of thrift stores yesterday but to no avail! Will go to a fabric store next! Thanks once again for you inspiration and creativity!🙏

I haven't been to Canterbury in years. I used to love going to charity shops but they seem to be quite expensive these days and where I live there's nothing really and no craft sections anymore. I used to love the car boot sales. I used to come out with trolley loads of stuff. I went to one carboot last year and it was okay but the prices have climbed. I used to get hold of loads of vintage curtains but there aren't so many around these days. These days I try to keep my spending in check and I think if I had a lot of carboots around me I'd probably drown in hauls!!! :D :D :D For that red round table cloth I would cut a hole in the middle and turn it into a circle skirt. :)
I think charity shops in general have got a lot more expensive compared to how I remember as a kid!🙈 I’m trying to cut spending and hoarding too and it seems very difficult 😂
I love car boot sales. I’ve picked up loads of clothes to cut up for sewing - usually there’s lots of stalls with a pile of clothes on the ground on a cloth and everything is 50p each! As I’m in Leicester there’s a big Asian community here so get saris sometimes for only a few pounds.
@@suesmith6679 I would imagine in Leicester you get the pick of the fabrics. I used to travel to the market in Leicester a couple of times a year. There was a chap there with a stall that would be piled high with the remnants from the factories there and I would fill the car and it would last me a year or two. I haven't anything like that where I am, and certainly the car boots I have visited have been very thin on the ground for fabrics and everything seems so much more expensive. I used to go to loads of car boots and pick up the most wonderful brocade curtains for next to nothing which I would turn into victorian and georgian dresses. I miss those days!
@ unfortunately the market isn’t what it was - it’s a very poor version of what it was in the past. The council have closed their site for renovations they’re now crammed into a tiny space. In its heyday you always went there to buy anything- people used to go there on coach day trips.
Hi, have you got at your local refuse tip a recycling shop? We have by us in the midlands and I have picked up so many wonderful fabric lots and the most I’ve paid is £1. I’ve had 2m of cotton velvet, 5M upholstery fabric and many more all over 1M in length. They also sell all their sewing patterns for 20p each!
@@afrayed_upcycling Google your local rubbish tip (recycling centre) find out if they have a shop attached to it (it’s usually a charity like age uk) you find when elderly family die that these are the places most of their belongings end up. I went last Monday and picked up a bag of sewing patterns ( which contained 33 all uncut, 10 of them hadn’t even been opened!) for £3.50, bargain! I’ve got to the stage now that I’m addicted to going there because the turnover of goods is so fast. At my branch the more you buy the cheaper it gets and they’re already cheaper than a car boot sale.

Went up mine yesterday and got two pieces of fabric. 2m of tweed and 1.5m of cotton both together cost £1. Honestly every time I find something I feel like it’s Christmas. Search out yours there’s not fabric every time but often enough to make it worth while, good luck

Charity shops where I live are all expensive, sell nothing vintage table cloths or teacloths, never find fabric anymore either. Just rails and rails of high street and modern stuff, noticed change after covid and the rummage charity shops closed and it's just the bigger charities left that are more like née shops.
Yeah I have found it’s really hard to find stuff in charity shops, a lot of them move their expensive stuff online which I understand, but it means the shops are left with fast fashion 😭

I know exactly the feeling you get going through all those fabrics! What bargains! I’m a regular visitor to the thrift shops in my area, but there are only two nearby. My sweet daughter bought me some lovilyness on her holiday as a gift, but I’ve just seen them on photos yet. I wish we were closer (I live in Sweden) then I would love to meet up and gladly let go and give you of a load of my stash as I have way to much ❤️
My latest project aimed to use lots of my scraps, I made patchwork covers to six of our dining chairs! Turned out gorgeous and eclectic and no one has the same! I also painted the chairs.

Oh you found so many pretties 😍 and yes i also dont buy new. Hate looking like everyone else and knowing I'm not adding to mass consumerism and wastage is what i strive for. I love yout dolls heads. I'm restoring a very large antique doll at the moment. That's what I collect and anything that is antique and suits the timeframe my home was built in, 1850s.

Found a unique shop in a small town called Paris (Southern Ontario Canada) that have some absolutely gorgeous tea towels! ( new) I brought one the back of a young girl in a lavender fieldMuted colours of blue lilac pale pale brownish/cream . Am planning to make a midi skirt with the tea towel as the front panel am however having some difficulty finding material for the rest of the skirt! Scoured a couple of thrift stores yesterday but to no avail! Will go to a fabric store next! Thanks once again for you inspiration and creativity!🙏

I haven't been to Canterbury in years. I used to love going to charity shops but they seem to be quite expensive these days and where I live there's nothing really and no craft sections anymore. I used to love the car boot sales. I used to come out with trolley loads of stuff. I went to one carboot last year and it was okay but the prices have climbed. I used to get hold of loads of vintage curtains but there aren't so many around these days. These days I try to keep my spending in check and I think if I had a lot of carboots around me I'd probably drown in hauls!!! :D :D :D For that red round table cloth I would cut a hole in the middle and turn it into a circle skirt. :)
I think charity shops in general have got a lot more expensive compared to how I remember as a kid!🙈 I’m trying to cut spending and hoarding too and it seems very difficult 😂
I love car boot sales. I’ve picked up loads of clothes to cut up for sewing - usually there’s lots of stalls with a pile of clothes on the ground on a cloth and everything is 50p each! As I’m in Leicester there’s a big Asian community here so get saris sometimes for only a few pounds.
@@suesmith6679 I would imagine in Leicester you get the pick of the fabrics. I used to travel to the market in Leicester a couple of times a year. There was a chap there with a stall that would be piled high with the remnants from the factories there and I would fill the car and it would last me a year or two. I haven't anything like that where I am, and certainly the car boots I have visited have been very thin on the ground for fabrics and everything seems so much more expensive. I used to go to loads of car boots and pick up the most wonderful brocade curtains for next to nothing which I would turn into victorian and georgian dresses. I miss those days!
@ unfortunately the market isn’t what it was - it’s a very poor version of what it was in the past. The council have closed their site for renovations they’re now crammed into a tiny space. In its heyday you always went there to buy anything- people used to go there on coach day trips.

Hi, have you got at your local refuse tip a recycling shop? We have by us in the midlands and I have picked up so many wonderful fabric lots and the most I’ve paid is £1. I’ve had 2m of cotton velvet, 5M upholstery fabric and many more all over 1M in length. They also sell all their sewing patterns for 20p each!

@@afrayed_upcycling Google your local rubbish tip (recycling centre) find out if they have a shop attached to it (it’s usually a charity like age uk) you find when elderly family die that these are the places most of their belongings end up. I went last Monday and picked up a bag of sewing patterns ( which contained 33 all uncut, 10 of them hadn’t even been opened!) for £3.50, bargain!
I’ve got to the stage now that I’m addicted to going there because the turnover of goods is so fast. At my branch the more you buy the cheaper it gets and they’re already cheaper than a car boot sale.
@@afrayed_upcycling look up you local recycling centre and see if they have a shop attached to it. Went up mine yesterday and got two pieces of fabric. 2m of tweed and 1.5m of cotton both together cost £1. Honestly every time I find something I feel like it’s Christmas. Search out yours there’s not fabric every time but often enough to make it worth while, good luck

I don’t usually ask because my small scrap stash is insane at the moment!🙈 but maybe I should ask for the larger pieces which help!
Charity shops where I live are all expensive, sell nothing vintage table cloths or teacloths, never find fabric anymore either. Just rails and rails of high street and modern stuff, noticed change after covid and the rummage charity shops closed and it's just the bigger charities left that are more like née shops.
Yeah I have found it’s really hard to find stuff in charity shops, a lot of them move their expensive stuff online which I understand, but it means the shops are left with fast fashion 😭
